Technical know-how is important, but soft skills are just as essential.
When asked what soft skill has helped them advance most in their careers, most people chose “persistence,” according to the latest reading of an ongoing study by Comparably. More than 5,000 workers across the tech industry participated in the query.

The second most popular response was likability (27%), followed by humility and logic (nearly tied at 15% and 14%). The least popular response was empathy (12%).
A differing view between men and women
While both men and women chose persistence as their No. 1 answer, the groups differed in what they valued least. For men, it was “empathy” and for women it was “logic.”

The oldest workers know best
More workers in their older years chose persistence than any other age group. For example, among 51 to 55 year olds, 41% said they relied most on persistence compared to the overall average of 32%.

The latest reading is as of Nov. 16.
