What Perks & Benefits Matter Most? Not Office Snacks.

When asked what they value most besides heath care, most people chose benefits related to vacation and 401(k), according to the latest reading of an ongoing survey by Comparably. Office meals and childcare came in at the bottom.

More than 10,000 people across the tech sector responded to the survey.

The breakdown

Overall, vacation policy and flex time received the highest percentage of votes (31% and 30% respectively), followed by 401(k) contribution (29%). Office meals received 7% of the vote and childcare received 3%.

Men vs. women

Men and women had similar ratings, though men rated flex time, vacation policy and 401(k) contribution as equally valuable. For women, vacation policy and flex time rank somewhat higher than 401(k) contribution.

Age matters

The results show a distinct increase in the importance of 401(k) contribution with age. Twenty-five percent of people in the 26 to 30 age group ranked 401(k) contribution their most important benefit; that number jumped to more than 35% for anyone 46 and above, reaching a high of 41% among workers 51 to 55.
