Dr. Steven K. Galson, M.D., M.P.H., has been Senior Vice President of Global Regulatory Affairs & Safety at Amgen Inc. since May 19, 2014. Dr. Galson served as Vice President of Global Regulatory Affairs at Amgen Inc. from October 2010 to May 19, 2014. He served as Senior Vice President of Civilian Health Operations at SAIC, Ltd. (also known as, Science Applications International Corporation) and Leidos Holdings, Inc. (formerly known as SAIC, Inc.) since January 2010. He also served as Chief Health Scientist at SAIC, Ltd. from October 2009 to October 2010. Dr. Galson led Leidos Holdings, Inc.'s civilian health team, manages the operation's long-term growth strategy and helps develop new solutions to meet the evolving business needs of its civilian, public health and life sciences customers. He had a distinguished 23-year career in United States (U.S.) Public Health Service. He served as the Acting Surgeon General of the United States from 2007 to 2009. He served as an Acting Assistant Secretary of Health and the Director of the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research from 2001 to 2007. Prior to his arrival at the FDA, he was Director of the Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Science Coordination and Policy, Office of Prevention, Pesticides and Toxic Substances. He has also served as the Chief Medical Officer of the U.S. Department of Energy. He began his Public Health Service career as an Epidemiological Investigator at the Centers for Disease Control after completing a residency in Internal Medicine at the hospitals of the Medical College of Pennsylvania. He served as an Independent Director at Vanda Pharmaceuticals, Inc. from July 2, 2010 to June 18, 2015. He is the co-chair of the Institute of Medicine Forum on Drug Discovery, Development and Translation. A retired rear admiral from the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, he is also board certified in general preventive medicine, public health and occupational medicine. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Surgeon General's Medallion and the Secretary of Energy Gold Award. He has been a member of the National Board of Medical Examiners and a peer reviewer for medical journals. Dr. Galson is a graduate of the State University of New York at Stony Brook where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry. He earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine and a Master of Public Health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health. He also holds an Honorary Doctor of Public Service from Drexel University.
