Bitly's Frequently Asked Questions page is a central hub where its customers can always go to with their most common questions. These are the 160 most popular questions Bitly receives.
To create short links with your own brand, you'll do three things:
Get a short custom domain of 32 characters or less, including the dot.
Configure your domain's DNS settings to point to Bitly.
Add the custom domain to Bitly.
If you're adding your first domain to Bitly, you can use one for free by searching our complimentary domain list. You'll be prompted to do this when you first upgrade to a paid plan, and you can also select one in your account settings.
Selecting a free domain also means you don't have to go through all the steps below to set it up.
To add a custom domain:
Sign in to your Bitly account.
Click the Group Selector at the top right of the page.
Click Managenext to the account you'd like to add a domain to.
Click Custom Domains.
Click Add Custom Domain.
If you're purchasing your own custom domain from a provider like GoDaddy, choose a short domain with 32 characters or less, including the dot.
If you're using a free domain from Bitly. That's it! You can skip the next few steps.
Log in to your domain provider.
Configure the following in your DNS settings.
Click Next.
Enter your custom domain.
Click Next.
Click Track Domain Status on the confirmation screen.
Once the domain has been verified in the Bitly system, you're ready to create branded links with your own custom domain!
View ArticleA Custom Domain, sometimes called a vanity URL, is a way to create links that include your brand.
When a link includes yourbrand, it helps people recognize and associate your links with your product or company. When they see your brand, they trust your links, and that results in higher click-through rates.
Custom domains + Bitly
To use a custom domain in Bitly, it must be no more than 32 characters long, including the dot.
Purchasing or adding a Custom Domain in your Bitly account replaces the bit.lyin your short links with your own custom domain.
For example, when ESPN shortens a link through Bitly, instead of being branded with Bitly's domain (bit.ly/wG8qhgpn)the link displays their own custom domain (es.pn/2Qw1wd7).
By editing the end of the URL - we call that the back-half - you can further customize the link to be an even more identifiable Custom Branded Link, likees.pn/superbowl.Read more about that in What is a Custom Branded Link?
View ArticleIf you've already purchased a custom domain and would like to add your domain to your Bitly account, you will first need to configure your DNS settings.
Your Custom Domain must be 32 characters or less, including the dot.
Setting your DNS Settings to Bitlys IP
The Domain Name System (DNS) is what allows a web browser to translate a domain to a website. You will need to tell DNS that your custom domain now should point to Bitly.
The way you update DNS varies depending on your domain registrar. In general, the process goes something like this:
Log into your domain registrar's website.
Select the Custom Domain you want to modify.
Find the section for managing DNS entries. The name of this section varies, but is usually something like DNS Configuration, DNS Records, or Advanced DNS. Links to instructions for popular hosting providers can be found here.
Depending on whether you are setting up a domain or subdomain your next steps will vary.
For a domain:
Edit the existing A Records for your site and change the IP addresses to 67.199.248.12 and 67.199.248.13. If there is one or no existing A Record, add new ones.
Edit the A Records Hostname to the character @ or your base domain (both mean the same thing). If you have additional A Records pointing to other IP addresses, remove all others and leave only the ones pointing to Bitly's IP addresses.
For a subdomain (such as on.wsj.com):
Edit the existing CNAME Record for that subdomain to point to cname.bitly.com. When entering your subdomain, enter only the portion before the first dot. For example, with on.wsj.com you would just type in on.
Note: In your DNS, you can also add a www entry for your domain name, which you will point to 'cname.bitly.com'. For example, if your Custom Domain was 'fred.me' you'd point your CNAME Record for 'www.fred.me' to 'cname.bitly.com.'
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, once you've configured your DNS settings and you've ensured that the correct A records have been created, you are now ready to link your Custom Domain to your Bitly account.
Please log into your Bitly account and click on the Groups button.
Then click on "Manage" to access your Account Details page. Once there, please click on "Custom Domains".
Once you've clicked on "Custom Domains" there is an option to "Add Custom Domain", this button is located on the top right hand corner of the page.
Once you've clicked this button, you will see a pop-up appear with the options to "Add Domain" or "Purchase Domain", please click on "Add Domain".
If this is your first custom domain in Bitly, you can get a free domain--up to $30--by clicking Purchase Domain.
Once you've clicked on "Add Domain" you will see a menu panel open, there you will be able to type in your domain in step 3 - Enter Your Custom Domain. Type it in and click on "Verify Domain".
Once you've clicked on "Verify Domain", you will be directed back to the "Custom Domain" page, where it will show you the status of your custom domain.
Once your domain shows "Verified", you're good to go!
Please note it can take up to 24 hours for domain changes to propagate.

Weve compiled these questions to help customers who already had Bitly accounts understand the changes:
What is the new subscription plan?
The new Basic plan is listed on our pricing page. As you upgrade, each plan includes more features and higher link limits. Some of the premium features include:
Redirecting customized links to another destination
Exporting reports for your link data
Creating links that land in a mobile app, aka mobile deep links
Organizing links into campaigns
Importing links in bulk and adding UTM parameters
How do the changes affect existing free accounts?
The new Free and Basic plans have lower monthly limits than those of our old free account, and users with preexisting free Bitly accounts will have their link limits decreased in 2019. We will email dates and further details to accounts affected by this change.
You can check your current link usage and limits by signing in to your account, selecting your group, and clicking Manage.
Adding custom domains to brand your links will no longer be available to free users.
Why did Bitly add a new paid plan?
Many of our customers told us they would like to have advanced features at an affordable price. Up until recently, all premium features were only offered in an Enterprise plan for larger brands.
By creating the Basic subscription tier, were giving the entrepreneurs and smaller brands relying on Bitly a way to choose a plan thats right for them. This gives you access to more features, higher link limits, and room to upgrade as your business grows.
How do the new Bitly subscriptions work?
Customers with a free Bitly account now have the opportunity to upgrade to the Basic paid plan. When you upgrade to a higher subscription plan, you will have access to more features. You can see whats included with each plan on our plan page.
How do I upgrade or lower my plan?
You can upgrade your plan or downgrade to a free account at any time by logging into your account, choosing an option on the Account Details page, and entering your credit card information, if needed.
For Enterprise plans, contact us to customize a plan to fit your needs.
How do the changes affect existing customers with Enterprise accounts?
Enterprise accounts are not affected by the new plans.
How will Bitly bill for the Basic plan?
Bitly will charge your credit card once a month--or per year, for annual plans--starting on the day you upgrade your account. You can cancel at any time and continue using Bitly for the remainder of the current billing period. You cannot receive a refund for any unused portion of your subscription.
Is there a free trial?
We do not offer a free trial, but you can cancel your subscription at any time and continue using Bitly for the remainder of the current billing period. You cannot receive a refund for any unused portion of your subscription.
Will customers with free accounts lose data?
The number of links you can create each month will be reduced in 2019 unless you upgrade to a paid plan, but you will not lose any existing data when the new plan takes effect. You will receive an email from Bitly explaining how long you can continue using the old free account limits.
Can customers with a free account upgrade to the Basic plan?
The new Free and Basic plans have lower monthly limits than the old free account, so we'll be sending all free users an email explaining how long you can continue using your free account with the old limits.
You can subscribe to the Basic plan now from the subscription page in your account.
If you choose to upgrade, you can later lower your plan to the new Free plan, with the limits that are lower than those on your original free account.
Which features and limits are available with the Basic plan?
The full details are available on our plan page.
Will Bitly continue to offer a free account?

Each link will also contain a utm_campaign parameter with the name of the campaign you're working in. The utm_source will always be bitly.
Keep in mind that if the link you are shortening already contains UTM parameters, additional ones will be added according to your selections.
From your dashboard, select a campaign and click Add Links.
From the "Add links" section paste the long URL you want to make into links in the highlight box on the right-hand side. Here you'll see all the included channels you are creating links for. View ArticleCaching Bitly Links
Since Bitly links never change or expire, we recommend that publishers shorten long URLs on their back ends and cache the corresponding Bitly short URLs for repeated use. When the short URL for a given page is stored locally, it can easily be shared using a number of cut-and-paste buttons and widgets.
Note that the JavaScript wrapper for the Tweet Button and any similar solution that calls the Bitly API on page load is only recommended for smaller publishers, as larger publishers may encounter rate limiting issues. For more information on using the Bitly API to shorten links on your site, visit http://dev.Bitly.com.
Link Wrapping on Twitter
Twitters link wrapper t.co is designed to invisibly wrap all links across all Twitter clients, while still displaying the exact URL that you share. T.co wrapping does not affect Bitlys analytics, and when t.co is working properly it should not impact your branding either. If youre seeing t.co links in places where youaren'texpecting them, take a quick look at status.twitter.com or the @twitterAPI account on Twitter to see if there is a system-wide bug that is affecting the way that links are displayed on Twitter. If you are building your own tool or widget to display, for example, your companys Twitter stream on your own website, be sure to follow the display guidelines provided by Twitter.
