Calm's Frequently Asked Questions page is a central hub where its customers can always go to with their most common questions. These are the 133 most popular questions Calm receives.
If you're not able to find an answer to your question here, please click here or use the button at the top right of the Help Center to submit a request. If you have any trouble with that form, you can also email us directly [email protected]!
View ArticleTo change the background scene, tap the "More" button in the bottom right corner of the Calm app home screen and then tap "Scenes" to access our "Scenes" menu.
In the Scenesmenu, you will see our background scene options. Simply scroll through the scene options provided and tap any that you would like to download. Once you've downloaded a new scene, swipe left or right on the home screen image to change your current scene.
You may also adjust the Play sounds outside of app option by tapping the duration selector (such '30 min') and choosing how long you'd like a scene to play. This determines how long the scene will play once you exit the app, so if you select the '0 min' option, the sounds will not play outside of the app at all after you exit. If you start a session with a duration above 0 min selected, then, when your session ends, the scene will play for the duration you choose. For example, if you choose '1 hour' and then listen to a Sleep Story, the scene sounds will continue to play for 1 hour after the story ends.
You can also adjust the volume of the background sounds in the "Scenes" menu. To do so, slide the Scene Volume bar left and right to whatever level you prefer. If you do not wish to have any scene sounds in the app, you can move the slider all the way to the left or choose one of our two scenes that do not include any sound (Silent Earth and Silent Clouds).
Please note that your selected scene will only accompany meditation sessions and does not play in the background of our Sleep Stories.

View ArticleIf possible, breathe in and out through your nose. Breathing through your nose slows the flow of the breath, allowing for a longer window of time for maximum oxygen absorption. If that’s difficult or uncomfortable because of health issues, you can breathe in and out through your mouth. This will not negatively impact your meditation experience.
With mindfulness meditation, the goal is to bring awareness to the present moment by focusing on the body's natural breathing pattern. If you find it difficult to notice the sensations of breathing, you can try putting one hand on your belly to observe the rise and fall of your abdomen. Some sessions may ask you to count your breath, take slow deep breaths, or notice the pause between your inhale and exhale. All of these techniques are tools to help you maintain focus on the breath, like training wheels when you’re learning to ride a bike. For different people, some techniques are more helpful than others, so experiment and see what works best for you. No matter the technique, the goal is the same: to center you in the present moment with relaxed and focused attention.
View ArticleApple does not allow sharing for any in-app purchases or subscriptions. As such, Calm subscriptions are not eligible for Family Sharing. You can read more about Apple's policy here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203046
Because the Calm app itself is added to the Family library of apps once it's downloaded by a family member, it is considered a 'Family Sharing' app, which is why the App Store details state that. However, in-app purchases, including subscriptions, are not shared.
If you are interested in sharing Calm with your family, please reach out to our support team here to discuss other pricing options.
