eero's Frequently Asked Questions page is a central hub where its customers can always go to with their most common questions. These are the 212 most popular questions eero receives.

Frequently Asked Questions About eero

  • Connecting your printer via Ethernet

You can connect a printer to your eero network wirelessly or via Ethernet. To connect your printervia Ethernet, simply attach an Ethernet cable from your printer directly to the Ethernet port of any eero in your network.

    Connecting your printer wirelessly

You can also connect your printer wirelessly. In order to do so, your printer must supportWPA2 AES-based CCMP encryption. eero does not support WiFi Protected Setup (WPS), as it has well-documented security issues. We also do not support older encryption standards like WEP, WPA, or WPA2 TKIP.

First, check that your printer supports WPA2 AES-based CCMP encryption. Some older printers don't support this, and may require a driver update. For most printers, you can find a driver update by searching for the make and model of the printer and downloading the suggested software update.

Next, try unlinking your printer from any old network settings it may have, and reconfiguring it for your new eero network. Some printers remember stale network settings, like your old router's MAC address, and therefore don't transition seamlessly to your eero network.

If you're still having trouble after trying the steps listed above, don't hesitate to give us a call.

  • Keeping your eeros connected is essential for keeping your mesh network running smoothly. After initial placement of your eeros, you shouldnt ever need to move them again. However, if you notice a drop-off or feel you are not getting the best performance, you can use the "Connection details" section under the individual eeros to improve wireless connectivity to your gateway eero(the eero connected directly to your modem).

To check your eeros connection quality, take the following steps:

    iOS:

    Open the eero app

Tap Online at the top of the screen

The signal strength of each eero will be displayed to the right of the name of each eero

Note: If you eero is wired it will display a <-> icon.

    Android:

    Open the eero app

From the home screen, navigate to the individual eeros at the bottom

The "Connection details" is the second section from the top

Your eero will either show a "Wireless" or "Wired" connection to the gateway

Note: if you are running a wired network, meaning all or any of your eeros are connected via Ethernet, the connection details section will only show Wired with a wired icon for that eero. Adjusting placement of these eeros may improve the connection quality to your external devices, however, such repositioning will not improve any network issues you may have. For these cases, please contact support.

The "Connection details" section will provide greater insight into the strength of the wireless connection from an eero placed in your home to the gateway eero. For more on what these strengths mean for your network, see the chart below:

    email us

If your signal strength for an eero is one bar, you will see an option appear in yellow that states Fix poor connection, tap to follow the steps provided.

If you are continuing to see a poor connection for a particular eero, you may want to contact our support if changing the placement of your eero doesnt help. Feel free to give us a call at 1-877-659-2347 or .

  • The following advanced features can be found fromwithin theNetwork Settingspage of the eero application menu:

Static IP address setup: Once you've created your eero network, you can manually set a static IP address in the eero app.

iOS: open the eero app and tap on the Settings tab. Next, tap on Advanced in the list of options, then look for Internet Connection. Tap the Static IP bubble and enter the information required.

Android: open the eero app menu and tap on Network Settings. Under the Advanced features menu, tap Internet connection. Tap the Static IP bubble, and enter the information required for your device.

DNS: Your DNS translates an address like www.eero.com to an IP address that your phone or computer can understand. Your ISP typically provides an automatic DNS server that resolves web addresses. However, if youd like to set Custom DNS, you can do so from the eero App.

iOS: tap the Settings tab, then select Advanced. Select DNS, then tap the Custom DNS bubble to enter your desired DNS server.

Android: choose DNS under Advanced settings (from the Network Settings page), and tap Custom DNS, then enter your primary and secondary DNS.

DHCP & NAT: Under the DHCP & NAT section of Advanced settings, you can configure the way your eero network assigns IP addresses to the connected devices in your home. If you choose Automatic, we will automatically choose the best settings for your network. If you have a particularly complex home network, you can set custom IP address settings for your eero network. Youll need to tap Manual, then choose your IP address prefix and specify the lease range manually. Finally, you can choose to put your eero mesh network in Bridgemode. If you choose to put your eero network in bridge mode, it will still provide WiFi access but youll need another router to provide network services.

Reservations & Port Forwarding: Under this Advanced setting, you can assign IP reservations and port forwarding rules for devices on your eero network. Port forwarding allows you to manually open an Internet port for a single client, to let traffic pass directly through to that machine. For example, if you wanted to run a FTP server on your laptop with IP address of X.X.X.X, you might create a port-forward on port 21 that directs TCP traffic to that IP address through your eero. Check out our detailed directions here on how to set up port forwarding.

UPnP: Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) allows devices like game consoles and media centers to open direct connections to other devices on the Internet. We enable this feature by default. If youd like to turn it off, toggle the slider so its no longer green.

  • Each eero has two Ethernet ports. One of the Ethernet ports is used to connect your gateway eero to the Internet via your modem. The other Ethernet port can be used to hardwire another device (such as a Sonos player) directly to your network. If youre using more than one eero, you can also use the Ethernet ports to wire eeros together. It doesnt matter which Ethernet port you use to connect to your modem since eeros configure themselves automatically.

There are a few differences between the 1st and 2nd-generation eero.

    1st-generation

The 1st-generation eero has a pin-hole style reset button, a barrel-style 12v power adapter, two Ethernet ports, and a USB 2.0 port. The USB port on the back of eero is only for diagnostic purposes, so do not plug any devices like printers into your eero's USB port.

    2nd-generation

The 2nd-generation eero has a reset button, a USB-C 12v power adapter, and two Ethernet ports.Just like the 1st-gen eero, the USB-C port on the 2nd-gen eero should only be used for its purpose, which in this case is powering your eero.

  • Yes, absolutely!

If you are looking to replace a 1st-generation eero on your network with an eero or eero pro, it is important to consider where youll be placing it within your network.

Adding an eero to your network

If the eero will be added on as an access point, meaning it will be an additional eero on your network, you can unplug the 1st-generation eero (as long as it isn't your gateway eero see below) you plan to replace and simply follow the steps in the app to add an eero. The new eero will join your network, and allow you to expand your networks overall coverage.

    Replacing your gateway

If youll be looking to replace your gateway eero, meaning the one connected directly to your modem, you will need to first add your eero or eero Pro as an additional eero on your network (see the steps below). In order for a new eero to join your network, it will need to have access to it via an internet connection, so removing your current gateway from your existing setup would not make it possible.

However, since eeros can be easily swapped, this is fairly easy. If youre using the iOS version of the eero app, just take the following steps:

    Open the eero app

    Select the Home tab

Tap on the + sign at the top right corner of the screen

In the menu that appears, select add an eero device.

Proceed by following the steps to add an eero to your network. If the app specifies a different model of eero than the one you are working with, select Set up a different type of eero

Once the eero has been added, unplug your existing gateway and the new eero or eero Pro (your network will temporarily go offline)

    Unplug your modem

Connect your eero or eero Pro to your modem via ethernet and then power on your eero and modem

Allow the eero to boot up and come online

It may take up to 10 minutes for your eero network to come back online as your network assigns the new gateway.

If youre using the Android version of the app, the steps to replace an eero are largely the same, with a few notable differences. Youll want to use the following steps in this case:

    Open the eero app

Tap the eero button (the one displaying the number of eeros on your network).

Tap the Add an eero option at the bottom the list

Go through the steps to adding your new eero to your network

Once the eero has been added, unplug your existing gateway and the new eero or eero Pro (your network will temporarily go offline)

    Unplug your modem

Connect your eero or eero Pro to your modem via Ethernet and then power on your eero and modem

Allow the eero to boot up and come online

It may take up to 10 minutes for your eeros to come back online as your network assigns the new gateway.

Once the new eero comes online, your network should be up and running! From there, you can use the swapped out gateway as another eero on your network, or if youwon'tneed it, you can reset it and give it to a friend or family member so they can get started on their own eero network.

  • eero is the worlds most flexible WiFi system, using eeros and eero Beacons to blanket your home in fast, reliable WiFi. Both play an important role in ensuring you have the best in-home WiFi experience.

The eero Pro (middle) builds off everything we accomplished with our first generation product and now includes a third radio. With tri-band, your eero has an additional 5 Ghz radio, meaning more of your devices can connect and get the fastest possible speeds. With eero Beacon (right), weve packaged all of the features of first generation eeros into a smaller form factor, while offering improved performance and stability. eero Beacons small size and built-in plug make it easier than ever to place eeros throughout your home by simply plugging them into any outlet. The eero (left) packs a big punch in a small package. This economical option still offers the same great speeds and reliability as the eero Beacon, but offers two Ethernet ports for the versatility to use it as stand alone router.

    eero Pro

eero Pro has the same elegant design and footprint as eero (1st-generation), but is more than twice as powerful. It is the first and only WiFi access point of its size that can broadcast on three wireless bands simultaneously (tri-band WiFi), doubling the speed of its predecessor. As the gateway of an eero WiFi system, eero has two auto-detecting Ethernet ports. One connects directly to the modem and the other port provides the option to hardwire devices like an Ethernet switch, printer, or video game console.

    eero

eero is the little router with a huge wireless footprint. This economical option still gives you the great speed and coverage across your home that youre used to. With the new design to raise the antennas, the little router offers up to 1500 sq ft of coverage and can be a great addition to expand a network. With the two auto-detecting Ethernet ports, it can also be used as the gateway of an eero WiFi system. One connects directly to the modem and the other port provides the option to hardwire devices like an Ethernet switch, printer, or video game console.

    eero Beacon

eero Beacon is half the size, but even more powerful than eero (1st generation). After a year and a half of collecting customer insights and feedback, eero found that more than half of customers place eeros in stairwells, kitchens, and hallways, where cords are disruptive. With eero Beacon, simply plug each unit into a wall outlet to easily expand coverage in the home. Add as many eero Beacons as needed to provide each room with WiFi coverage.

    Getting started

To start a new eero network, youll need to use an eero with ethernet ports (1st generation, eero Pro, or eero) as your networks gateway. This is the eero that connects directly to your modem to create your network. From there, you can add as many additional eeros or eero Beacons as youd like!

    How they stack up

    Placement

Proper placement is critical for optimal network performance. Get started by connecting your gateway eero directly to your modem. We recommend placing it out in the open on a hard, flat surface rather than hiding it in a cabinet, drawer, or closet.

From there you can place additional gen 1 or gen 2 eeros on any hard, flat surface throughout your home. Desks, tables, shelves, or counters are great options for eero placement!

eero Beacons offer even greater placement flexibility. This compact device is roughly as wide as a standard power outlet. And since it plugs directly into a wall outlet, there is no need to worry about finding a surface for your eero to sit on. As an added bonus, eero Beacons have built-in nightlights, making them a great fit for hallways, bedrooms, and kitchens. Really, it can go just about anywhere!

    Size

When you look at an eero and eero Beacon, you will notice that both share a similar body. That is because an eero Beacon is essentially an eero sliced in half. This smaller form factor makes eero Beacon ideal for any location in your home, and can simply be plugged into any outlet.

    Connectivity

A clear difference between eero and eero Beacon is that the latter has no ports. As we mentioned, you will need to start your network with an eero as it has two available Ethernet ports. While this is necessary for starting your network, itisn'ta requirement for adding additional eeros. If your home is completely wireless, meaning youdon'twish to connect any of your devices to your home network via Ethernet, eero Beacons are probably a great fit for you.

However, if you do wish to connect any devices back to your network over Ethernet or your home has Ethernet wiring that allows you to hardwire your network, you might prefer to use just eeros or a combination of eeros and eero Beacons.

Another key difference between eero Pro and eero Beacon relates to their radios. eero Beacon is a dual-band device, meaning it has one 2.4 Ghz and one 5.2 Ghz radio. eero Pro (2nd generation) has three radios, including a 2.4, 5.2, and 5.8 Ghz radio. This means the eero Pro offers even greater performance and stability.

    Power

eero Beacons are designed for ultimate convenience. Thanks to their built-in plug, they can easily be placed anywhere in the home. That also means they are cordless, so one less wire to worry about running throughout the home.

eero Pros and eeros use a USB-C input, with a cord-to-adapter that plugs into an outlet. First generation eeros use a barrel-style jack.

  • One of the biggest frustrations with a traditional router has to be the confusing and complex setup process, so at eero weve taken a different approach: make the entire setup experience as quick and easy as possible. So, whether youre an old hand at networking or are taking your first step into home WiFi, eero is for you.

Our app will walk you through the process and do most of the heavy lifting, but heres a quick overview of what to expect. If youre new to WiFi, or just need a refresher, we encourage you to read this article and refer back to it if you have any concerns during in-app setup.

    Before you begin:

    Setup components

    In the box:

    Ethernet cable

    eero(s)

    Power cord(s)

    What youll need:

    eero iOS or Android app

At least one 1st or 2nd-generation eero (eero Beacons cannot be used to start a network)

Mobile device with a data connection (If you don't have access to a data connection, see our workaround instructions here.)

    Internet service

Cable or DSL modem (if required)*

Dont know what a modem is? Unsure if you have one? Find out here.

Heres how to get started getting your eero network online:

STEP 1: Download the eero app for iOS or Android:

Download the free eero app you can find it on the Apple Store or Google Play. eero supports both iOS and Android (check here for details on the versions we support). Youll need the app to set up your eero network. Youwon'tbe able to set up your system on a web browser.

STEP 2: Create an eero account

Youll need to enter your phone number and email address. By default, well send a verification code to your email address, but you can opt to receive it via text message instead instead. Enter this code on the verification screen of the app to create your account.

STEP 3: Set up your eero

The eero app will guide you through setting up your gateway eero. Its three easy steps:

Unplug your modem. If you have other wireless equipment connected to your modem, please unplug it as well.

Note: if you have a modem-router combination device from your provider, you can plug the eero directly into one of the 4 Ethernet ports on the back without powering down.

Connect your eero to your modem using the Ethernet cable. You can use either of the Ethernet ports on the back of your eero.

Plug your eero in with the power adapter that came in the box, then plug your modem back into power. For placement tips, including DO's and DON'Ts, visit here.

STEP 4: Create your eero network

Now thatyou'vegot everything plugged in, its time to create your eero network.

After tapping Next, the eero app will begin to look for your eero. You will notice that your gateway eero's LED will begin to flash blue and then turn solid once found. Once your eero has been detected, you will select a name for your eero (naming the eero after its location is a common choice).

If prompted, you may need to enter your eeros serial number, which is located on a sticker attached to the bottom of your eero. Just look for a barcode with the letters SN on it its small, but its there.

Once you've selected a name for your eero, you will choose your network name (SSID) and network password. This is how devices will join your network.

If youre replacing an existing router, one easy option for choosing a network name (SSID) and password is to simply reuse your current SSID and password. This way, youwon'thave to reconnect devices that were previously on the network.

Keep in mind that running two networks with the same SSID can be problematic. If you have a modem/router combo device, as mentioned above, we strongly encourage you to enable bridge mode on that device. Need help? Give us a call and well walk you through it.

Tap Next and your eero will complete setup! here

STEP 5: Add eeros to your network

Onceyou'veset up your gateway eero, the eero app will walk you through steps to set up additional eeros or eero Beacons on your network. The first thing you'll be asked is for a general overview of your home layout. This will help the app properly judge the placement of your eeros.

eeros can be added wirelessly or by Ethernet backhaul, while eero Beacons can only be added wirelessly. If you need help with placement, weve got lots of tips . Its a great idea to familiarize yourself with these tips before getting started so that you can optimize placement throughout your home from the get-go.

Step 6: Connect devices to your eero network

One final (and important) step is to remember to connect all of your devices to your new eero network. To do this, simply find your eero network on your device, enter the network password thatyou'vecreated, and get connected. If youre using the same network name (SSID) and password as your previous router, your devices should automatically reconnect. However, you may need to toggle WiFi on these devices or power cycle for them to recognize the new eero network.

If you experience any trouble connecting specific devices to your new eero network, try disconnecting and reconnecting WiFi on the device. If that doesnt work, try rebooting the device and then reconnecting to the network once it powers back on.

If you have any questions, don'thesitate to reach out. Were here to help.

  • Every eero has two Ethernet ports (note: eero Beacons have no Ethernet ports). On your gateway eero, one of these Ethernet ports are required to be used to connect to your modem. If you'd like to add additional Ethernet ports, you will need an Ethernet switch.

All Ethernet switches work with eero, so feel free to use any to your liking. With that said, ensure you select a switch that fits the requirements of your internet service speeds. If unsure, it is always safe to go with agigabit switch, which can support speeds up to 1000 Mbpsotherwise 1Gb.

How do I add a switch to my network?

When adding an Ethernet switch, make sure it is placed after your eero in your network's topology. For most users, this means you will have a modem connected to your gateway eero, and then a switch connected to the other available port on your eero. For non-gateway eeros (leaf nodes), you can plug a switch into either port.

Can I connect my other eeros to a switch?

Yes, absolutely, but once again make sure that your Ethernet switch is connected directly to your eero and not your modem.

  • Mesh networks enable multiple routers to work in unison to deliver hyper-fast, super-stable WiFi. Each device in a mesh network connects to the other devices, rather than each device connecting to your Internet Service Provider. Unlike a typical home network which is built around a centralized hub, a mesh network consists ofmultiple routers communicating with each other.

Why does this matter? Have you ever noticed that your WiFi signal is stronger in your living room than it is in your bedroom? Or that you can stream videos in your kitchen butcan'teven load a webpage in your backyard? The challenge of traditional WiFi networks is that they rely on single routers to broadcast a WiFi signal. This means that your signal is strong when youre near your router and gets weaker as you move away.

The cool thing about mesh networks is that they enable multiple routers to work as a team. When all your routers can communicate and share information with each other, they can improve three important features of your network: range, speed, and stability.

A mesh network has a greater range and is much faster and stronger than your normal WiFi network. The range of your mesh network can be extended simply by adding nodes. Each node in a mesh network is a device that not only sends and receives data but determines the best path by which to send it. The nodes in a mesh network can automatically reconfigure themselves, using multiple routes to find the most optimal path to the Internet. Shutting down one of the nodes in a mesh networkwon'tnecessarily shut down the entire network, which means the mesh network is much stronger than the centralized architecture of the WiFi in your home today.

While this technology has been used in enterprise networks for years, it has required complicated setups, extensive hardwiring, and the help of professional installers. eero brings mesh networking technology to residential WiFi users, no IT degree required.

  • Dont worry, well have you up and running in no time. Here are a couple quick things you can try:

Check that Bluetooth is ON: Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone. Youll use Bluetooth to pair your eero with your account.

Power cycle your gateway eero: You can do this by unplugging and replugging it. Onceyou'veplugged it back into power, wait for your eero to boot back up. This should take about 2 minutes.

Power cycle your modem. Next, try power cycling your modem. If theres an on/off switch, switch it off and wait for 30 seconds before switching it back on. If there is no on/off switch, unplug the modem and wait for 30 seconds before plugging it back in. Once the lights stabilize on your modems display, you'vesuccessfully powered it back on.

Put your modem/router combo device into bridge mode: If connecting your gateway eero to your existing modem/router combo deviceisn'tworking, try putting your modem/router combo device into bridge mode. Heres how you do that.

Check your Internet connection: The easiest way to do this is to plug a computer directly into the modem. If your Internet connection is up and running, you will be able to access the Internet when connected to the modem via Ethernet.

If youre still having trouble setting up your eero, feel free to give us a call.

  • If youre having trouble with your eero or modem connection when setting up your gateway eero, here are a few things to check:

Make sure your gateway eero is connected to your modem via the Ethernet cord provided in the box.

It should clip snuggly into your gateway eero and one of the Ethernet ports on your modem. (Note:Be sure toplug the ethernet cord into the correct port on your modem. On a standardmodem, it will pluginto the "WAN" or "Internet" port. Ona modem/router combo device, it will plug into one of the "LAN" or numbered ports)

    Try power cycling your modem.

If theres an on/off switch, switch it off and wait for 30 seconds before switching it back on. If there is no on/off switch, unplug the modem and wait for 30 seconds before plugging it back in. Once the lights stabilize on your modems display, you'vesuccessfully powered it back on.

  • The Activity Center allows eero Secure customers to view the number of inspections, threat blocks, and content blocks per network for that week. Information is updated in-app regularly and refreshed every Sunday morning. In addition to the total count of blocks, subscribers can also see the categories of each block.

    iOS:

    Android:

How can I access eero Secure activity center?

When using iOS, tap on the Activity tab on the main menu. Youll be able to see an overview on each of the Secure filter categories, and you can tap on any of the graphs for a more in-depth examination. If youre using the Android app, tap on the graph icon on the top right corner of the app dashboard to access the Activity Center or swipe left on the dashboard.

Only eero Secure customers will be able to access the Activity Center.

Within each section, you can also view the total number of Inspections, Threat Blocks, and Content Filters by day, week, and month.

    What do the metrics mean?

Inspections: As you browse the web, each site you visit loads content such as ads, images, and extra code from hundreds if not thousands of sources. These transactions happen almost instantaneously and can contain harmful content. eero Secure inspects each transaction to ensure its safe before it loads.

Threat blocks: If an Inspection determines a site is harmful, it will block the site before it loads. This is called a Threat Block and is reported in the Activity Center under four different categories:

Malware blocks - Software that can harm your network and connected devices.

Spyware blocks - Commonly found in suspicious ads, spyware can be used to track your online behavior, or in more serious cases, all network activity.

Phishing blocks - When an attacker poses as a trustworthy website to get you to provide your personal information.

Botnet blocks - When you or a device inadvertently attempts to access a website that has been associated with a botnet.

Safe Filters: eero Secure automatically tags sites that contain violent, illegal, or adult content so you can choose what your kids can and cannot visit right in the eero app.

  • When you set up your eero network for the first time, it will be running the eeroOS version it received at our factory. We are constantly updating the OS for performance and security improvements, so there may be an update available to you right after setup.

To have your eero system updated to the most recent eeroOS, you can either update your system (which youll be prompted to do after initial install) or you can wait for an automatic overnight update. The preferred method is to update immediately so that your network is completely up-to-date. Updating will take roughly 15-20 minutes and will require a reboot of your network. The reboot will take roughly 90 seconds at the end of the update. During that time, your network will be down but will return to normal use once complete.

If you decide to wait, and allow your eero system to automatically update overnight, you will still be able to access your network and use the internet. However, some features that require a newer version of eeroOS may notbe available until your network is updated.

  • Under the Device details section of the connected devices on your network, there is a section that provides more insight into how that specific device is currently connected to your network and whether or not it is using the 2.4 or 5 GHz frequency.

Here is a breakdown of the different connection types:

When your devices are connected to your network wirelessly, theyll use the 2.4 or 5 GHz frequency. The big difference between these two frequencies is range vs. speed. With the 2.4 frequency, the waves are much wider and are able to provide you with greater coverage at greater distances. However, because of the wavelengths, data may travel slower. Whereas with the 5 GHz frequency, the waves are narrower andaren'tcapable of traveling as far. You will be able to achieve the highest download and upload speeds when on 5 GHz.

When on a wireless network, either the 2.4 or 5 GHz frequency, the strength of your device to the eero network is represented in five status bars.

  • If you run into any trouble during setup or when adding a new eero to your existing network, you mayneed to take additional troubleshooting steps to correct the issue.

If you encounter one of the error messages described below, simply follow the associated instructions.

    Bluetooth is off

During the setup process, if your phone's Bluetooth is off, you will beprompted to turn it on to complete setup. It is suggested to have Bluetooth on so that your eero can both pair with your existing network and complete registration of your eero. If do decided to set up manually, you can tap onSet up using serial number and you can find that number on the bottom of your eero.

    Multiple eeros found

If you are setting up a network with more than one eero, it is recommended to setup one eero at a time. Meaning, you should follow the prompts in the app to power on and set up/register each eero one-by-one.If you wish to plug all your eeros in at once, you can identify which eero is ready for setup and registration by finding the eero with a solid green LED.

    No eero found

If you see a screen that saysNo eero found, there is a chance that your eero is either unplugged, yourphone's Bluetooth is off, or your phone has moved out of range of your eero. Confirm that the eero is powered on (the LED will blink blue) and that your phone both has Bluetooth on and is within range. If you run into this issue again, you can tap onSet up using serial number and you can find that number on the bottom of your eero.

eero already registered/on a different network

If the app displays that the eero is already on another network, you can clear any past settings by performing a hard reset. To do so, make sure the eero is powered on, and proceed to hold down the reset button until the eero blinks red. From there, try adding the eero to the network.

    Poor connection

Ifyour eero is detected,we will run a test to determine whether or not it has anideal placement within your network. If the placement of your additional eero to the rest of your network isn't as strong as it should be, you will see a screen that saysPoor connection with additional steps to improve the placement of your eero. For more, please see this article.

    Still running into issues?

If you continue to run into issues with this step despite the instructions, connect your additional eero via Ethernet to the gateway eero (the one connected to your modem).

If you are able to complete setup through this process, you can disconnect theEthernet between the two eeros, and place the additional eero within 40 feet from another eero. If you would like to test the connection of this wireless eero after placing it elsewhere, open the eero application and tap on the respective eero at the bottom of the screen. You will then see the signal strength of that eero to the network. For more, see this article.

If you are still experiencing issues adding an additional eero and the recommendations above were unable to allow you to complete setup, please contact eero support. We are more than happy to resolve this matter, and ensure that all your eeros are able to join your existing network.

  • What is Amazon Wi-Fi simple setup?

Amazon Wi-Fi simple setup is a part of Amazon's Frustration-Free Setup program and enables customers to connect supported smart devices to their Wi-Fi network in a few easy steps.

How does Wi-Fi simple setup work?

For your new device to use Wi-Fi simple setup to automatically connect to your home Wi-Fi network, you need three things. 1) a new Wi-Fi simple setup enabled device, 2) an existing second generation or newer Echo, Echo Plus, Echo Dot, Echo Show, Fire TV Stick 4K, Fire TV Cube, Fire TV Stick (2nd Generation), Fire TV Stick - Basic Edition, or Fire TV (3rd Generation) device in your home that is already connected to your Wi-Fi network, and 3) a password saved to Amazon. If you have all of these things and you purchased your device from Amazon.com, the new device will try to join your Wi-Fi network automatically using Wi-Fi simple setup. If you bought your device offline, or the device did not automatically join your Wi-Fi network, you can always open the Alexa app and follow the new Wi-Fi simple setup instructions to complete the setup with fewer steps than before.

How will devices know which Wi-Fi network is my network?

If you have already connected an Amazon device like a Fire TV, Fire Tablet, Kindle, or Echo device and chosen to store your password to Amazon, Wi-Fi simple setup will recognize the account linked to your previous device and automatically connect the new Wi-Fi simple setup enabled device using the same password you have saved to Amazon. To learn more about saving your password to Amazon click here.

Do I need to purchase all devices on Amazon.com for Wi-Fi simple setup to work?

No, when you purchase Wi-Fi simple setup devices from Amazon.com using your Amazon account, the device is automatically associated to your account. This association allows the device to access Wi-Fi simple setup automatically to try to join your home Wi-Fi Network. If you purchase a Wi-Fi simple setup enabled device from a different retailer, the process is still simple. Open the Alexa app, click on add a device, and follow the Wi-Fi simple setup instructions to complete Wi-Fi setup.

    Is Wi-Fi simple setup Secure?

Yes. Wi-Fi simple setup follows industry best practices for security. All devices are authenticated before any data is sent and data is only sent in an encrypted form. Wi-Fi simple setup will only use the passwords you have saved to Amazon to connect compatible Wi-Fi simple setup enabled devices you have purchased from amazon.com or scanned with a 2D barcode.

Can I choose not to use Wi-Fi simple setup?

Yes. Disabling simple setup in the eero mobile app means your eero network will not serve to help conigure new, simple setup enabled devices. To fully disable simple setup for all Amazon devices you purchase, you may disable Wi-Fi simple setup on your Amazon account through the Manage Your Content and Devices page. This will stop all Wi-Fi simple setup enabled devices from accessing Wi-Fi simple setup. When you disable Wi-Fi simple setup you will be required to manually configure all new devices you purchase and no devices will have access to Wi-Fi simple setup on your Amazon account.

For more information on Amazon Wi-Fi simple setup, visit Amazons FAQ page.

  • The eero Pro is a continuation of the incredible workmanship and technology that went into our first generation product. Both generations of eero are designed to provide your home with best-in-class connectivity. With that said, our updated hardware comes with a few differences and advantages:

    Tri-band

The biggest difference between the first and second generation eero is the addition of a third band. The third band adds an additional 5 Ghz radio, allowing your network to deliver even more reliable fast speeds to more devices.

    Power Adapter

Weve also revamped the power adapter on the second generation eero. Instead of a barrel-style plug, the eero Pro uses a USB-C power adapter.

    Reset button

With eero, you shouldnt ever have to reset or reboot your units. However, if troubleshooting requires it, weve made it a bit easier for you to reset your eero Pro. Instead of a push-pin style hole, there is now a small button on the back of the deviceNo paperclip needed!

    Wheres the USB?

The first generation eero featured a USB 3.0 port. This was used for diagnostic purposes. With the eero Pro, weve replaced that port with USB-C.

Whether you are just getting started with eero, or even had our 1st generation product, the updated eero has a lot of great advantages including a faster tri-band configuration. Best of all, the eero Pro works with the first generation, eeros, and eero Beacons.

  • For the best experience, when wireless, eeros and eero Beacons should be no more than 50 feet apart of at least another eero.

Depending on your home, this can vary. However, eeros are flexible to be placed around the home, and the eero app will take you through bestplacement to ensure you are getting the most out of your system.

If you eeros are all wired together via Ethernet, the space between eeros is a bit more flexible, however, wireless coverage is still depending on the structure of the home.

  • If your network is offline, you will want to troubleshoot your network. Below are the preferred steps to take, but if you have already tried these, you may want to contact your ISP (see below).

    Plug it in:

Make sure your eero and modem are both plugged into a power source. The lights on your modem and your eeros LEDs should be on.

    Check the Ethernet connection:

Check to see that your gateway eero and modem are both connected via Ethernet and that the Ethernet is properly plugged into both devices. It should make a clicking sound when inserted.

Power cycle your eero and modem:

If everythings powered and connected to Ethernet, you can try power cycling your eero. Unplug it and replug it into power. Then wait until it fully boots back up this should take about 2 minutes. Next, try power cycling your modem. If theres an on/off switch, switch it off and wait for 30 seconds before switching it back on. If there is no on/off switch, unplug the modem and wait for 30 seconds before plugging it back in. Wait until the lights on your modem and the LEDs on your eero are done blinking before trying to get back online.

    Contact your ISP:

If youre still not online, it may be time to try contacting your ISP.

    Some major ISPs include:

    Comcast (Phone: 1-800-934-6489)

    Time Warner Cable(Phone: 1-800-892-4357)

    Verizon(Phone: 1-800-837-4966)

  • Strategically placing your eeros is the single most important step you can take to ensure your system provides fast, reliable WiFi to every room in your home. While thereisn'ta one-size-fits-all solution for placement, weve put together a list of some of our favorite tips to help you find the perfect spots to place your eeros.

Each home is different. Where you place your eeros will depend on the layout of your home and the materials used in its construction. For example, walls of brick, stone, and metal will be hard for your WiFi to penetrate. Placement decisions will also depend on where you want strong WiFi coverage. If you want to get the Internet on your back deck, for instance, you could place an eero inside the back door to extend the range of coverage beyond the perimeters of your home.

Placementisn'tan exact science, and you might have to experiment with the location of your eeros for optimal performance. If you need any help, feel free to give us a call, and well walk you through it.

    Setup

For a quick and easy setup experience, we recommend keeping your eeros in relatively close range to each other a good rule of thumb is less than 50 feet between them. Once your network is up and running, feel free to spread your eeros out around your home.

If your home was built with wired Ethernet in mind, hardwiring your eeros is always an option. Wireless links are typically slower than wired connections. They're also more prone to interference since they have to share the airways with other devices that are also broadcasting. eeros are designed to deliver the fastest WiFi connection possible in any configuration, so while wiringisn'tnecessary, it may help to increase the speed and strength of the signal throughout your home.

Youll also want to optimize the placement of your gateway eero. You may not have much choice here, since it has to connect to your modem which connects to your phone or cable line. But if you can move your modem and gateway eero out of your basement and into a more centralized location, youll improve the speed of your entire network with that one change.

DOs: As youre experimenting with placement, here are some tips to follow:

Place eeros where they can talk to each other. While it might be tempting to place your eero in an existing dead zone or area with poor WiFi connectivity, its much more effective to place eeros halfway between your gateway eero and your existing dead zones. This way, your eeros can get a strong WiFi signal from your gateway eero and broadcast that signal into your former dead zones. You can think of placing them like a WiFi relay each eero is a link in the chain bringing WiFi to your dead spot.

Place eeros on a hard, flat surface. Your eeros should be placed on a surface that is both stable and flat, such as tables, countertops, and nightstands.

Aim high.eeros radiate their signal more upwards than downwards, but mostly along the planetheyre placed on. Its best to place your eeros at a height halfway between the floor and the ceiling, not on the ground.

Keep your space open. eeros communicate best whenthey'renot closed in. Keep them out in the open try not to place your eero(s) inside a media console or cabinet.

The thinner the barrier, the better. The fewer the walls (and the less substantial their inner material) between your eeros, the better your performance will be. Older houses with dense materials like plaster, lath, or chicken wire in the walls are particularly hard for WiFi waves. Placing your eeros near doors may help since wood is less dense and easier for WiFi waves to penetrate. Whenever possible, aim for direct line of sight between eeros.

DONTs: Here are some things to avoid:

Heavy metal. Stream as much Motrhead as you can stand, as long as youdon'tput your eero(s) near your refrigerator or other heavy metal objects. These objects can interfere with wireless radios. If youre placing an eero in the kitchen, we suggest placing it on a counter or shelf thats as far from your major appliances as possible.

Interference. eeros work best whenthey're20-30 feet away from objects that cause interference. Avoid placing your eero on top of, or near, these objects:

    Microwave oven

Cordless phones (for your landline, not your cell phone) that use the 2.4GHz or 5GHz range. If these cause interference, try changing the channel your phone uses.

    WiMAX

    Other 802.11 networks

Power lines, power stations, or railroad tracks

Radio leakage from Direct Satellite Service (DSS)

Older coaxial cable from certain types of satellite dishes. If you have an older satellite dish, contact the device manufacturer to get newer cables

    Fluorescent lights

    Bad electrical connections

    Radar

Smothering your eeros.Keep your eeros out in the open and never put anything on top of them. When possible, also avoid having your eeros enclosed in a small space.

Soft surfaces.Your eeros work best on a stable surface, so avoid putting them on chairs, cushions, and any other surface thatdoesn't allow forspace beneath them to breathe.

  • Yes!

eero has been tested for compatibility with most major Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the United States, Canada and the EU (France, England, Germany, Italy & Spain).

To date, no U.S. or Canadian ISP has been confirmed incompatible with eero. As long as you can connect your gateway eero to a modem or upstream device with an Ethernet cord, you should be able to set up and use eero. If youdon'tcurrently have an ISP, please see this article.

Examples of ISPs in the U.S. include, but are not limited to, Comcast Xfinity, AT&T, Time Warner Cable, CenturyLink, Charter, Verizon Fios, Cox, Google Fiber, RCN, Blue Ridge, and Frontier.

Examples of ISPs in Canada include, but are not limited to, Rogers, Bell Aliant, Eastlink, Shaw, Cogeco, Bell Canada, Videotron, Telus, and TekSavvy.

To use eero, you will need to have a download speed of at least 1 Mbps this is the minimum suggested speed for eero to function properly.

Please see below for specific configurations for certain ISPs.

    Advanced configurations

Since we live in a world with a great deal of variety, some ISPs also may require particular configurations. Here are a few specifics for some common providers::

Verizon FiOS: eeros work well with Verizon FiOS Internet-only service. If you want to control your FiOS TV from within your eero network, there are some additional configuration steps you'll have to take. You can review those steps here.

AT&Ts U-verse: eeros work well with AT&T U-verse service. To set up your eero network just follow the setup instructions in the eero app. After your eero network is configured, we recommend disabling WiFi on the AT&T U-verse router. See our detailed U-verse instructions here.

DSL: Your eeros will work with DSL. If your DSL provider requires PPPoE, you should set up your eeros behind your existing router. (This configuration is called 'double NATing.' See our steps on how to do this here.) After you set up your network, you can log into your existing router and disable WiFi to prevent multiple SSIDs. If youre not sure how to do this, please contact your ISP for assistance.

Google Fiber: Google Fiber requires customers to use their Network Box as the primary network router. To use your eeros in a Double NAT configuration, please refer to Google Fibers support page for helpful tips on connecting your personal router to the Network Box.

Webpass: Some ISPs, like Webpass, don't require their users to have a modem. In these instances, users should skip the modem instructions in the eero app and instead plug their gateway eero into the Ethernet jack on their wall.

If you don't see your ISP listed above, or have more questions about specific network configurations, please feel free to contact our support team!

  • Why bridge your eeros?

By putting your eero network into bridge mode you can continue managing your network through your existing router. While wedon'tgenerally recommend this approach, as you will lose some advanced features of eero, it is necessary for customers with certain network configurations. If you have a modem/router combo device, we recommend putting that device into bridge mode.

Putting an eero in bridge mode will turn off its network services but allows the eeros to continue providing WiFi access. Please bear in mind that you will not be able to manage your networks advanced features through the eero app with your eeros in bridge mode. Additionally, bridge mode requires that one eero remain wired into the network via Ethernet.

There are a handful of scenarios when bridging your eeros is required:

Your provider is AT&T U-Verse, which provides WiFi/DHCP

    Your provider requires PPPoE

Your ISP requires a specific MAC address matching their provided equipment

    How to bridge your eeros

Create your eero network: Follow the setup flow in the eero app.

Note: If your network configuration necessitates bridge mode to function, youll have to first set up your eero network by double NATing. Read our full instructions on how to do so here.

Bridge your eeros by following the instructions below:

    iOS Users:

Open the eero app and tap Settings (bottom right corner)

    Tap Advanced

    Tap DHCP & NAT

Switch your selection from Automatic (recommended) to Bridge or Manual (for those running static IP)

Tap the Save button in the top right corner

    Android Users:

Open the eero app and tap the app menu (top left corner)

    Tap Network Settings

    Tap Advanced Settings

    Tap DHCP & NAT

Switch your selection from Automatic (recommended) to Bridge or Manual (for those running static IP)

Tap the Save button in the top right corner

  • Unlike the familiar router-to-range extender network configuration, eero is a WiFi system that uses multiple access points to provide your home with fast, reliable coverage all on a single network.

Range extenders can expand the reach of your existing wireless network. This enables you to access the Internet when youre not close enough to your router to receive a good signal. While range extenders can be effective in increasing wireless range, they reduce throughput and create performance issues. Range extenders can cut bandwidth in half because they rely on a single wireless radio to both listen for and broadcast data. This results in a slower connection when youre receiving a WiFi signal from your range extender and can also impact your connection speeds to your router.

Some range extenders may also need to broadcast an entirely separate network from the one supplied by your router. If your original home network has the SSID "Home2848" for example, and your range extender has a different SSID, "Home2848_RPT," you'll have to switch between the two networks as you move throughout your home. eero eliminates these hassles by creating a seamless mesh and linking all of your eeros under a single SSID. This lets you move freely around your home without being booted offline or stopping to switch between networks.

eeros function together as a self-sufficient WiFi system. Rather than connecting various wireless networking products to your existing router, eeros can replace all of your existing networking hardware except for your modem.

Getting started with eero is as simple asfollowing the guided instructions from the eero mobile app. Our app walks you through the process step-by-step and your eeros will automatically configure themselves behind the scenes. You can connect as many eeros as you need to eliminate dead zones, no matter how large your house may be.

Once your new system is up and running, your eeros dynamically determine how to pass traffic between your connected devices as efficiently as possible. This enables you to access a strong WiFi signal no matter where you are in your home. And since eeros have two radios for simultaneously sending and receiving information, they support multiple hops with minimal signal loss. Additionally, your eeros can communicate with the cloud to receive instructions and updates. This means your eeros are self-updating, self-fixing, and self-improving all the time.

  • eero supports VPN passthrough. This means you can use another routing device with VPN in front of your eero, and eero will be able to pass that VPN traffic. Also, if you have a VPN service set up on your device, eero can pass that traffic as well.

At this time, eero doesn't actively manage your VPN. However, with eero Secure+, members get an account for Encrypt.me included with their membership. With Encrypt.me, eero Secure+ members get up to five accounts and can install the Encrypt.me tool on an unlimited number of supported devices.

  • For many users, eero will be the sole router in the home, and the only source of WiFi signal. For many other users, however, eero is used in conjunction with an existing ISP router, usually in the form of a modem-router combination device or all-in-one box. If your home fits this description, this article is for you!

Why should I disable WiFi on my ISP equipment?

To be clear, having your eero connected to an ISP modem-router is perfectly fine, andwon'tcause any performance or functionality issues; however, having a second WiFi network in the home can be a source of numerous WiFi-related issues. To prevent these issues, disabling WiFI on your non-eero router is highly recommended.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have TV + Internet service in your home, you may need to leave WiFi enabled on your modem-router. Please consult with your service provider before attempting these steps if you use TV receiver or set-top boxes, to prevent possible interruption of the other services in your home.

    What issues can occur?

Among the potential issues that arise when multiple networks are in the same home, these are the most common:

Wireless signal interference from having two distinct networks in the immediate vicinity

Device confusion, resulting in stability issues as devices switch from one network to the other

Weak signal or coverage due to devices attempting to connect to the modem-router WiFi rather than the eero WiFi

Inability to connect or communicate with local devices such as printers, audio streaming devices (e.g. Sonos), and video streaming devices (e.g. Chromecast)

    How to disable?

Since the existing WiFi broadcast in your home comes from your ISP equipment, youwon'tbe able to edit or adjust it directly from the eero app. In most cases, this setting will need to be changed by wiring a device such as a laptop or PC directly into the modem-router; in certain cases, you may be able to edit these settings from an online portal provided by your ISP. If youaren'tsure which method applies to your router, contacting your service provider directly is always the best method for getting assistance with this change.

    Manual Adjustment Method

When disabling the WiFi on your modem-router manually, please use the following steps as a general overview. IMPORTANT NOTE: Since all service providers and routers are different, these steps are not intended to be an exact or exhaustive resource if you have difficulty making this adjustment, please contact your service provider directly.

First, connect a device directly to your modem-rtouer via a standard Ethernet cable in one of the LAN Ethernet ports in back most ISP-provided routers have 4 such ports.

Next, open a web browser on your wired device, and type the routers gateway IP address into the address bar

Common examples of gateway IPs are 192.168.0.1 and 10.0.0.1, but every router is different your router should have a sticker on the bottom or underside that will list the specific gateway IP address for your model.

Onceyou'vereached the routers configuration page, you may be asked to log in with the admin credentials these are usually printed on your routers box or on the routers info sticker on the underside.

After logging in fully, look for the wireless settings page. There can be a lot of variability in how router settings are arranged, but some common keywords to look for are Network Settings, WiFi Settings or Wireless

On the wireless settings page, all thats left is to disable the WiFi! This can also have a variety of names, but the most common option will be a toggle or a checkbox to enable or disable WiFi. You may also see this named Broadcast, Radio, or SSID regardless of what its called, the main thing is to disable this setting. Thats all there is!

    Web Portal Method

If your ISP offers a web portal to adjust your router settings, youll follow the same steps as above, with one major difference: instead of connecting a device to the router directly, all youll need to do is navigate to your ISPs web page, login using your subscriber account information, and reach the router settings page. Once youre on that page, please follow the same steps and tips mentioned above to find and disable the WiFi broadcast of your modem-router.

    Success!

Ifyou'vemanaged to successfully disable your modem-routers WiFi, then the only personal WiFi name you should see will be the eero WiFi name. Make sure all your devices are connected to the eeros WiFi for the best possible speed, coverage and stability in your home, and enjoy!

  • We know how frustrating this is. Here are several things you can try. But if all else fails, don'thesitate to give us a call!

    Check your devices:

The first thing youll want to do is figure out whether youre experiencing slow behavior on multiple devices. If its only on one device, simply turn your devices WiFi off and on again. If that doesnt work, try rebooting the device.

If youre having an issue across multiple devices, or the above stepsdon'thelp, read on!

    Check your speed:

If youre on a computer, try running a speed test from Speedtest.net. Or if youre on a mobile phone, run the Ookla speedtest.net app. Make sure you take the speed test from several different locations around your home. As a point of comparison, youll also want to try the speed test next to your gateway eero. To ensure youre connected to the nearest eero when running a speed test, turn WiFi off and then on again before each test at a new location.

How do these results compare to the results you typically get? Are the results close to the speed you pay for with your ISP? If the speeds are low (in the single digits) and if these are the typical speedsyou'veseen in the past, you should try calling your ISP to make sure youre receiving the right speed package or making surethey'renot experiencing an issue on their end.

If you see low speeds (in the single digits), but thisisn'ttypical, move on to the steps below.

    Power cycle your eeros:

Try power cycling your eeros by unplugging the power cable from the back of your eero, waiting 30 seconds, and plugging it back in. This step can sometimes fix connectivity issues.

The eeros LED will turn solid white, then be flashing white while booting up. It takes about a minute to start up and begin broadcasting. Youll know when the cycle completes because the eeros LED will go solid white again.

    Restart your modem:

Restarting your modem can sometimes fix connectivity issues and improve performance. Unplug the power cable from your modem, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Depending on the model of your modem, it can take a few minutes to restart.

If this doesnt help, don'tworry, weve got more tips below!

Check to see if youre double NATed:

Ifyou'vegot another router or a modem/router combo device double NATed to your eeros, this could be the cause of poor connectivity and performance.

If you have a modem/router combo device, you can try putting it in bridge mode, which disables the wireless function on that device. We walk you through how to put your modem/router combo device in bridge mode here.

If you have another router connected between your modem and gateway eero, you can try disconnecting the router in between and connecting your gateway eero directly to the modem.

If neither of these steps resolves the issue, its time to check with your ISP.

    Call your ISP:

If youre still with us and we havent fixed your problems yet, you should contact your ISP. Your ISP could be having an issue that affects your home or neighborhood.

As always, feel free to call us, and well do our best to help.

  • A network topology is the way everything on your network is connected. In an eero network, this includes your modem, eeros, and connected devices, as well as occasionallyEthernet switches or additional upstream routers.

    Common network topologies

    Key:

    Wireless (most common)

In a standard network with one eero and eero Beacons, most users will have their gateway eero connected to their modem, and then their eero Beacons connected wirelessly. Additional eeros can also be added wirelessly.

    Wired/Wireless

If yourhome allows you to wire some or all additional eeros, you can take advantage of doing so by connecting their eeros via Ethernet. eero Beacons cannot be wired to the network. Networks can also feature a mix of wired and wireless nodes.

    Adding an Ethernet switch

If you'd like to connect additional devices via Ethernet to your gateway eero, as well as additional eeros, you can use an Ethernet switch to expand the number of available ports on your eero network. In this scenario, a switch can be connected to the gateway eero, and additional eeros can be connected to it via Ethernet. You can also use a switch off of any other eeros.

Hardwiring your eeros means youwon'tlose any throughput because therearen'tany wireless hops.
