View ArticleWhat are Fantasy Games?
Have you ever dreamed of what it would be like to own your own professional sports team? Fantasy games are a way to live out that dream. And, to make things easier, all fantasy games are fundamentally the same - real athletes and their real-life performances are used to generate points for fantasy teams in fantasy leagues.
For example, in a traditional fantasy league, there is a set number of "team owners." There are a set of rules that determine everything from team roster size, to scoring method, to schedule. You and your fellow team owners hold a draft, i.e. fill your fantasy roster with real-life ball players, from A-Rod to Ben Zobrist.
Then throughout the season, you will set your line-up based on how well you think "your" players will perform. The statistics your positional players generate in their real games are collected, and fantasy points are awarded based on these numbers. The better your players perform, the more fantasy points accrue for your fantasy team.
Ultimately, these points determine a winner in seasonal leagues. The team that accumulates the most points (or points based wins) over the course of the season - or prevails in the postseason-is declared the league winner. With the league championship comes the glory to boast about it until the next season rolls around, at which point the other teams can smell sweet revenge.
What is ESPN Fantasy Baseball?
Welcome to the world of fantasy baseball - ESPN Style! ESPN Fantasy Baseball is the closest thing you can find to buying your own professional franchise and becoming the team's coach, owner and president. All decisions are yours to make. And lucky for you, baseball is a game filled with unbiased player performance statistics. By using these statistics, you have everything you need to understand which players are performing well and which ones are not.
You make all "team manager" decisions on who will help your team and who may hurt your team, all season long. So, with 162 MLB games per team and a minimum of 27 at-bats per game for every team, peppered with strikeouts, walks, home runs and then mixed with flame throwing pitchers and nasty closers (you get the idea), ESPN real-time stats are yours to plunder and uncover patterns in player performances that would make Theo Epstein proud!
Once you join a league, ESPN provides you with everything needed to build the best possible baseball team. And sure, you got your cut-throat, 11th hour wheeling and dealing between armchair LMs, fully customizable league rules and scoring, multiple draft methods, live box scores, waivers, trades, free agency, custom player updates, a commissioner, league bulletin boards, sortable stats for all players, and more. There's plenty of room to sling trash- talk throughout your league, and enough stats and weekly analysis to make you the next Bill James. We just want to make sure you know what to do with it all! So sit back as we take you through the keys to ESPN fantasy baseball. Then get crackin' on creating the next fantasy dynasty!
View ArticleThe ability to veto a trade is available in order to prevent collusion in a league. There are two ways to veto a trade, and in League MangerLeagues, this setting can be changed by the League Manager at any time during the season:
Every owner in your league has the power to cast a vote against a trade once one is accepted if they feel that it is unfair. As a team owner in the league you'll be sent an email with detailed instructions on how to cast a vote - follow those step and you'll be all set. If enough votes are cast against the trade (4 out of 10) then it will be immediately canceled. Teams with more than one owner will only receive one vote
In this scenario yourLeague Managerhas the ultimate power to veto a trade or let it go through. The individual owners still have a voice however. They can submit their comments privately to theLeagueManagerwhere the other owners can't see them. Only YourLeague Managervotes

View ArticleThe League Manager (LM) has the option of choosing the number of player acquisitions allowed
The League Manager (LM) has the option of modifying waiver settings and player acquisitions allowed during the season. Players added via trade do not count against any team acquisition limits.
NOTE: This setting cannot be changed after the league has drafted.
FAAB waiver order is determined in the same fashion as non-FAAB. If you make a waiver claim and win it, you get moved to the bottom of the waiver order list.
WAIVER OPTIONS AVAILABLE IN LM LEAGUES
No Waivers All players will immediately become free agents after the draft or after being dropped from a team’s roster. Most teams choose to use a waiver period to make player acquisitions fair, but this setting may be chosen if you prefer to allow roster additions for all player at any time.
Waivers If you choose this setting, players will be marked as `On Waiver’s` after the draft or after being dropped from a team’s roster. A player placed on waivers will remain on waivers for a period of time (1-4 days), during which al teams will have the opportunity to make waiver claims on that player. Then, the player will be awarded to the team with the highest waiver priority that made a claim, and the team will move to the end of the waiver order.
Free Agent Auction Bidding (Continuous) Teams will have a specific budget with which they can bid to make a player acquisitions an all acquisitions will be done in batches one or more times each week (as specified in settings). If a team would like to add a player, that team will bid an amount they are willing to pay. On the next waiver process day, the team with the highest bid will be awarded the player, and the bid amount will be subtracted from that team's budget. Players remain on waivers continuously and thus are always subject to bidding.
Free Agent Auction Bidding Teams will have a specific budget with which they can bid to make a player acquisition and all bids are processed after the league’s specified waiver period. If a team would like to add a player, that will secretly bid an amount they are willing to pay. On the waiver process day, the team with the highest bid will be awarded the player, and the bid amount will be subtracted from that team's budget. Players who are not claimed during bid processing become free agents available for first-come, first-serve style pickups.
NOTE: During Playoffs, if the league is set to “reset after each week”, the waiver order resets to the inverse of the regular season standings. Playoffs are not factored in.

View ArticleBefore each season begins ESPN will determine the primary position of every MLB player available in the game. The criteria will primarily be the past year's playing time. Additional positional eligibility will be determined as outlined below in the Batter and Pitcher sections. This includes rookies as well as veterans. The listed primary positions are fixed and will not change for the duration of the season.
NOTE: In custom leagues the League Manager CANNOT change the listed position of any player in the game.
Positional Eligibility for Batters
Additional positional eligibility for Batters occurs when one of the following conditions is met:
Games played at a position during last season: 20
Games played at a position during current season: 10 (The eligibility will take place on the 11th day, even if no game is played that day)
NOTE: For a batter to be considered eligible for Outfield (OF) he must play at least ten games in any outfield position (RF, CF, LF or any combo of the three, totaling 10). For example, at one point in 2009, Gary Sheffield (DH) played four games in Left Field and six games in Right Field. The total was ten, so he would be OF eligible.
Positional Eligibility for Pitchers
Additional positional eligibility for Pitchers occurs when one of the following conditions is met:
Pitching appearances last season: 5 starts / 8 relief
Pitching appearances during current season: 3 starts / 5 relief
Note: From time to time, ESPN may make the decision to assign SP or RP eligibility to a pitcher prior to their meeting the conditions stated above but whose value is dramatically affected by an anticipated role change. Unlike with hitters, who still accrue the same statistics no matter what their position, the nature of starting pitching versus relief pitching increases the impact of a role change. However, ESPN will not remove eligibility from a player who has achieved one of the above-stated milestones. Please also note that SP and RP are custom positions only; the ESPN standard game uses the generic "P" position

View ArticleFree Standard League Rules
Although Fantasy Football is extremely competitive, we emphasize that all participants exercise good sportsmanship to prevent team owners from unintentionally crossing the line, and maintain a fun environment.
A: More than one team in the same league
One person can't control more than one team in the same league.
If two or more teams in the same league are under the same account, they must be controlled by different people sharing that account, but not sharing the teams.
Violation of this will lead to cancellation of the teams and expulsion from the game.
B: Collusive transactions
Collusion occurs when one team makes moves to benefit another team, without trying to improve its own position.
One-sided trades are an example of collusive transactions.
Dropping a player so another team can pick up that player is another example of collusive transactions.
Teams found in violation of this policy will be canceled and their owners will be prohibited from participating in future ESPN Fantasy Games.
NOTE: Standard League members are expected to veto/protest any and all unfair or collusive trades throughout the season. At least 4 owner’s votes are required in protest for a trade to be denied in a Standard League.
C: Impeding Other Owners
Making certain transactions to solely impede other owners are not allowed.
Tanking games for the sole purpose of denying another player's chance to make the playoffs is against the rules.
Cycling through players in free agency to put them on waivers and make them unavailable to another team in your league is strictly prohibited, and is grounds for expulsion from the game.
D: Roster Dumping
Owners that are found to have dumped their players to the player pool in an attempt to undermine the league may be subject to expulsion from the game.
If you are giving up on the season, we ask that you maintain league strength by providing the other owners with the most competitive team you are able to field.
E: Owner Interaction
Owners should always be polite and gracious when dealing with one another.
Threats and obscenities are against the rules and illegal in many jurisdictions.
Owners that are found to have sent threatening emails to another owner will be warned and/or kicked out of the game completely.
These rules extend to message board posts as well.
F: Offensive Posts
Any posts, including league and team names, of a derogatory nature are strictly prohibited.
This includes chat room, message board or on a league's bulletin board.
Personal attacks and sexist or racist remarks also fall under this restriction.
There is a zero tolerance level.
G: Inactivity
In order to maintain the integrity of the league, the commissioner may contact owners of teams that remain inactive for extended periods of time.
The league commissioner will send a notification to the email of record.
If the team remains inactive after the league commissioner sends an email to the inactive team owner, the commissioner reserves the right to reassign ownership of the inactive team.
LEAGUE MANAGER LEAGUE RULES: ESPN Fantasy Football League Manager leagues are created to the specifications implemented by their league creators. The League Manager and other team owners are responsible for handling all conduct, communication and fair play issues that arise in these LM Leagues.

View ArticleREGULAR SEASON SCHEDULE
All Standard leagues play with a fixed 19-week regular season. To view your team's schedule click on the "Schedule" link on your main team page. To view any individual matchup period click on the main "Scoreboard" tab (it will default to the current period).
REACHING THE PLAYOFFS
The top four teams in a league make the playoffs. These four are comprised of the two division champs and two wild-card teams. Division champs are the teams that win the league divisions. The next two teams according to the tie-breaker below are the wild card teams.
PLAYOFF BRACKET SETUP
The Head-to-Head fantasy playoffs take place during the last four and half weeks of the NBA's regular season. To view your league's playoff bracket click on the "Playoff Bracket" link on the "Scoreboard" tab. The playoffs start on Week 20 and run through the end of the NBA's regular season (4 weeks). Round 1 takes place during Weeks 20 and 21 (two weeks), and Round 2 takes place during Weeks 22 and 23 (2 weeks).
PLAYOFF SEEDING AND TIEBREAKERS(Standard Leagues)
When your league converts into playoff mode the system automatically generates a seed for each team in the league based on the regular season results. The seeds determine where the system places each team in the playoffs. The primary factors which determine seeds are:
1. Division Winner(s)
2. Winning Percentage
In the event that two or more teams have the same winning percentage at the conclusion of the regular season, and have played the same number of head-to-head games between them, the following tiebreaking system determines the seed:
1 - Overall record *
2 - Head-to-head record
3 - Division record
4 - Coin Flip
* NOTE: Overall record is based on
winning percentage.
Therefore, a team that has more losses than another team might have the same winning percentage.
In the event that two or more teams have the same winning percentage at the conclusion of the regular season, and have NOT played the same number of head-to-head games between them, the following tiebreaking system determines seed:
Overall Record
Division Record
Coin Flip
SCORING DURING THE PLAYOFFS
Scoring during the playoffs works much the same way as during the regular season, with the object to win as many categories as possible. The big difference is that each playoff round lasts two weeks, not one week (as during the regular season). As such the Games Started Limits are increased and you get two full weeks to accumulate stats in each stat category. By winning 6 or more of the 10 categories during each playoff matchup you'll guarantee yourself a win. In the event that two teams have the same win-loss-tie record at the conclusion of their two-week playoff game, the following tie-breaking system is employed:
Tie Breaker for Playoff Games
Higher seeded team
Note: During the playoffs, once your matchup ends, the scoring is final and no scoring corrections will be applied.
All Standard leagues play with a fixed 19-week regular season. After that, the playoffs begin! To view your team's schedule click on the "Schedule" link on your main team page. To view any individual matchup period click on the main "Scoreboard" tab (it will default to the current period).
PLAYOFF SCHEDULE -"Who plays Who?"
In Round One of the playoffs, the division winner with the best win/loss record plays the wild-card team with the worst win/loss record; the other division winner plays the wild-card team with the better win/loss record.
In Round Two, the winners of Round One (see table below) compete for the League Championship. Each round of the playoffs spans a two-week period. The remaining teams in each league compete in the consolation bracket.
From the League Championship bracket:
1st place - Winner of game 1, round 2
2nd place - Loser of game 1, round 2
3rd place - Winner of game 2, round 2
4th place - Loser of game 2, round 2
From the Consolation Bracket
5th place - Winner of game 1, round 2
6th place - Loser of game 1, round 2
7th place - Winner of game 2, round 2
8th place - Loser of game 2, round 2
9th place - Winner of game 3, round 2
10th place - Loser of game 3, round 2
