Executive Bio

Dr. Steven J. Murray, Ph.D., P.E. has been Principal Engineer and Group Vice President at Materials & Corrosion Engineering at Exponent Inc since 2008 and January 2015 respectively. Dr. Murray served as Corporate Vice President at Exponent Inc. since May 2014 and served as its and Senior Managing Engineer. Dr. Murray's areas of expertise include failure analysis of electrical and mechanical systems, metallurgy and the mechanical and electrical properties of materials. Dr. Murray also specializes in the areas of shape memory alloys, magnetism and magnetic materials. He provides electrical and mechanical materials consulting services to a variety of industries. Engineering systems investigated include appliances, computers and consumer electronics, biomedical devices and medical electronics, pipelines, cranes, plumbing, heat exchangers and large electrical generators and motors. He has also conducted multiple investigations related to potential product recalls. Dr. Murray holds an appointment as a Consulting Assistant Professor in the School of Engineering at Stanford University where he teaches the course Techniques of Failure Analysis. Dr. Murray received his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering (Electronic Materials Panel) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2000, B.S. in Materials Science and Mineral Engineering in 1996 and B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1996 from the University of California, Berkeley. He is a Registered Professional Electrical Engineer in the State of Oregon and Registered Professional Mechanical Engineer in the State of California.
