  • To ensure that you are correctly and continually sharing your location, there are a few permissions that Glympse requires. When you initially downloaded Glympse, the app should have requested permissions to several items on your device, but in the event that permissions were not given correctly, or if they change at any point, please check the following items to ensure they are set as listed below.

    1. On your Android device (7.0 and above), open the settings menu. Navigate to Apps, and select Glympse. The permissions section should list Calendar, Contacts, Location, Phone, SMS, and Storage.

    2. Go back to the settings Menu, find Device Maintenance, and select Battery. Scroll down to Unmonitored Apps, and if Glympse is not listed in this section, add it. • Glympse uses all the methods available on a mobile device to determine GPS coordinates. Occasionally, however, Glympse may not work as a result to the GPS losing connectivity. This can be due to weak cellular signals, inclement weather, or even physical obstructions like buildings or power lines that may obstruct GPS signals. Additionally, if Glympse detects that a phone's battery is getting low, it will disable location sharingto minimize batteryconsumption in order to avoid getting stranded without a functioning phone.

If you suspect that the Glympse app might be having difficulty for one of these reasons, here are a few things you can do to verify whether Glympse is working correctly on your phone so that your location isviewableby others.

Include yourself, either by phone number or email address, on any new Glympse you wish to verify. You can also modify an existing active Glympse to include yourself. When you get the Glympse invite link, click it to view your location in Safari or Chrome. If the webpage displays your real-time path accurately, it is also sure that others can see the same.

If you think that Glympse might not be accurately detecting your location, check your phone's Settingsto make sure that GPS or Location Services are configured properly on your device and that Glympse has the necessarypermissions to access your location.

Also try launching a different location-enabled app, such as Google Maps, to see if it is able to get an accurate location fix.

  • Glympse allows the ability to create password protected public tags. The password protected tag ensures that only users who know the designated password will be able to share their location to your map.

Properties of a Password Protected Tag:

A password protected tag is a tag that requires a password in order to share to that tag.

The password protected tag is still viewable by anybody, but only those who know the password can share their location to the tag.

You can assign a password to a tag by simply appending a password enclosed by curly brackets { } at the end of the tag name. For example, if you want to create the password protected tag "FamilyRoadTrip" with the password "SEATTLE", you would enter FamilyRoadTrip{SEATTLE} in the field where you specify the tag name. Anyone who attempted to join the tag FamilyRoadTrip would need to include the password in brackets in order to show up on the map.

There are a couple of things to know about using this feature:

The password is only enabled if you are the first person in the tag when adding the password portion to the tag name.

Currently the password cannot be changed once it's set, so be sure to keep track of the password to avoid headaches later.

To Create a password protected Tag, follow these steps:

    1. Open the navigation menu in the upper left corner.

    2. Click the + next to Public Tags.

    3. Type in the name of the tag, followed by the password in curly brackets.

  • We get frequent reports of people that have shared their location looking like they are not moving on the map, or where their location updates once every 20 or 30 minutes, or even longer. Most of the time, this is not the result of the app not working, but of a setting not set correctly in the app on the sender's phone.

If someone has shared their location with you, and it looks like they aren't moving at all or they are moving infrequently, have them take a look at the steps in the appropriate article below. Alternately, if people have complained that you don't seem to move on the map when you share your location with them, you should also follow the steps in the appropriate article. • Verizon added the Glympse feature to their messaging app last year as part of a series of significant upgrades and enhancements to the app. The G icon you see next to a "where are you?" message is a feature they included to highlight the easier way to coordinate location with someone with whom you are texting with.

It's important to note that even though the Glympse feature is a part of the Verizon Messages app, the feature is inactive unless you explicitly choose to use it. A core tenant of Glympse is that users are always in control of when their location is being shared with anyone. This means that unless you specifically choose to share a Glympse with someone, the feature is essentially disabled meaning that your location is not collected nor is it shared with anyone. Also, a Glympse has an auto-destruct feature so that when the timer on the Glympse expires, your location is no longer visible to anyone.

More info on the feature is available at the links below.

  • The Glympse app has been developed to maximize efficiency and minimize the amount of battery consumption, as best as possible. In order to provide real-time location sharing, Glympse utilizes the device's internal GPS, which uses a modest amount of battery.

Glympse utilizes a greater percentage of battery usage during an active Glympse and when the app is in the foreground. When the app is in the background, the app uses very little battery. When the app is actively sharing your location, it requires more battery usage due to the use of GPS on your device.

  • Glympse Private Groups is a feature of Glympse that creates a private, invite-only Group. Members of a Group can share their location to and request the location (within the group) of other members. Any member of the group can see the location of everyone that is actively sharing within the group.

Glympse Private Groups are perfect for sharing with family, carpool, teams, or a group of friends. The Group is private and not accessible by others, unless they are signed in to Glympse, and have received an invite from an existing member. Unlike the Glympse Public Tags feature (which is a public group that anyone can join),Private Groups give members control over who can join the group, view other group member locations, share their location to the group, or request the location of other group members.

On the other hand, as members of private groups are required to have a Glympse account,Private Groups can only be viewedon verified cellular devices and, as a privacy measure, cannot be seen in a web browser.

  • Glympse uses the GPS capability in your mobile phone to let you share your location via a Web-based map for a predetermined period of time with anyone you choose.

Sharing your location with someone is referred to as "sending a Glympse." A Glympse goes out as a link via text message, email or a series of other third party apps or sites like Facebook, Twitter or Whatsapp. When recipients click on the Glympse link they can view your location on a map in real-time using any web-enabled device for as long as you chose to share with them.

Unlike other location-based services, there is no need to create an account or log in. Once downloaded, you can send a Glympse to anyone you choose by simply selecting a contact, choosing the duration you want your location to be available, and then tapping send.

The nice thing about sharing your location via Glympse is that it is temporary. A Glympse automatically expires when its timer runs out so you don't have to worry about sharing your location when you do not want to.

With Glympse, you are in complete control with who you want to see your location and for how long they see it.

  • Most users prefer to open a Glympse received via SMS in the Glympse app, but may find the link opening in the browser by default. There is a simple way to do this! This article will show you how to change the default way your iOS device opens a received Glympse. Please follow the steps below or check out the attached video (at the bottom of the article) to change the default behavior.

For iPhone 6S and newer (See below for older versions):

When you receive an invite via text message (SMS), hard press the message and slide up.

If you hard pressed correctly, you should get the screen below.Select open in Glympse, and until/unless you change this again, each time you click on a Glympse link, it will open in the Glympse app.

A normal (or soft) press will give you different options as shown below. If you get this screen, go back and try again - press harder on the link and slide up.

    iPhones 6/6+ and older:

The above method works on phones enabled with 3D touch, which means iPhones 6S or newer. For older phones that don't support 3D touch, this method can be used to change the default behavior to open a received Glympse in the App instead of the browser.

Once you have clicked the link and have the Glympse opened in the browser, you should see the below screen. To change how your device opens the Glympse link, tap in the status bar at the top of the screen (on either side of the clock - the areas represented by the red rectangles in the screenshot below), or pull down on the the blue Glympse section right below the address bar.

Upon tapping or pulling, a bar should drop down directly under the address bar that will provide an option to open in the Glympse app along with an open button. Selecting open will open that Glympse, as well as future Glympses, in the app. Please see the attached video to see how this is done.

  • The Tagsfeature in Glympse allows you to quickly view and share your location with multiple friends on a single, shared Glympse map.

Glympse Tagsare public spaces (similar to Twitter hash tags) where anyone who knows the tagname can view the tagmap and add themselves to the map.

When you view a tagmap, what you are seeing is a map of people who have chosen to join the tagmap (ex: !family or !SeattleCyclingClub, etc.). People join a tagsimply by choosing to share a Glympse with that tag. There's no need for them to send a Glympse to everyone in the tagindividually.

Glympse Tagsstart with an exclamation point (!) or bang. Tagmaps are view-able byanyone on any web-enabled device at:

    http://glympse.com/!your_tag_name

Anyone viewing the tag'smap canadd themselves to a Tagmap by tapping the Join Tab button in the top right corner ofthe page.

Joining a tagfrom the Glympse app is simple and quick. When you create a new Glympse, select the Tagoption from the recipients screen and enter the name of the Group you want to join. Glympse Tagnames begin with a bang (!) symbol and can have any name you want. Tagsare open to anyone so there is no need for a login or password to join.

Since a Glympse is always temporary, there's no need to explicitly "leave" a tag. When the Glympse you shared on the tagmap expires, your live location will no longer be visible on the tagmap.

Create a Glympse Tagto easily to keep track of or interact with friends during common activities such as sporting events.

For example, if you and several friends plan to meet up to tailgate at a football game, you would all send a Glympse to: !GSUEaglesTailgate. The location of each tagmember will then show up on the tagmap for as long as they've chosen to share. As with a traditional Glympse, individuals can stop actively sharing their location any time they choose.

  • Glympse users have told us they most often use their home and work address as their destination point. Because of that, we have added that option in the settings of the iOS and Android app, as well as a brand new section beginning in version 3.27 to add as many custom Places as you wish.

Tap the Main Menu in the upper left-hand corner and tap Settings. You will see the section labeled My Places with Home, Work and MANAGE MY PLACES to customize any number of your favorite Places of Interest.

When you tap Home and Work in iOS, or Add in Android, you will be presented with the Destination Picker where you can either enter an address or search for an address. Tapping Select, or tapping the address will save it.

Or, tap the MANAGE MY PLACES link, then the PLUS symbol at the bottom of the page to search for and add your favorite places.

    What benefit does this add?

Your Home, Work, and other Favorite saved Places will now appear at the top of the destination picker when you are sharing location with others or when sending a Request + Destination.

  • To use Glympse, drivers need the Glympse appinstalled on an iOS or Android device and the SYNC 3-equipped car automatically recognizes the app when the phone is Bluetooth-paired or USB-connected through Ford's AppLink technology. AppLink is a standard feature of SYNC 3 that projects the smartphone app's information onto the dashboard display and provides a choice of voice recognition, touch screen or steering wheel buttons for control of the app.

In addition to using voice controls to activate a Glympse, the new touch-screen controls on SYNC 3 allow drivers to easily view their active Glympse, or re-send using their recent history. As with the previous SYNC AppLink version of the app, users have one touch access to their top four favorites or can easily send to a recent recipient.

Recipients of the Glympse can then monitor the vehicle's progress and ETA via a real-time dynamic map, on either a smartphone or desktop. After the user-defined time limit expires, the location is no longer updated.

  • Ever wonder where a friend or a loved one is? The Glympse Request feature lets you reach out to anyone with a request that they share a Glympse of their location with you.

From the Map screen in the Glympse app, simple tap on Glympse button and then choosethe Request button and enter the mobile number of the person you wish to send the request to. Just like a regular Glympse, the Glympse Request comes through as a simple link so anyone with a smart phone can respond.

When the recipient clicks on the link, they are taken to a web page where they can accept or decline the request. Once the request is accepted, the Glympse app opens on their smart phone allowing them to share their location with you with a single tap.

Okay, so you might be wondering what happens if the recipient doesn't already have Glympse on their phone. Well, we've got that scenario covered too. When the recipient taps your link agreeing to share their location, if they don't already have Glympse on their phone the link will take them to the appropriate app store to download Glympse. When they open the Glympse app for the first time, the app will recognize that they were trying to send a Glympse and will automatically prepare the Glympse for them so all they have to do is tap Send.

  • Unlike other location apps, Glympse allows you to share your live location with others updated in real time. This means that under normal circumstances, the Glympse app updates your location every 5-10 seconds forthe time period you have chosen to share your location.

The Glympse app does, however, require a data connection in order to share your location. The frequency of updates can change depending on network connectivity, battery level, speed and other environmental factors.

Also, to optimize power consumption (and help extend your battery life) Glympse decreasesthe frequency of location updates when your Glympse is not actively being viewed. When a recipient begins viewing your Glympse again, the Glympse app will begin uploading location points again so that viewers can again see your latest position on the map.
