Dr. David A. Shapiro, M.D., PH.D., has been the Chief Medical Officer at Intercept Pharmaceuticals, Inc. since 2008. Dr. Shapiro served as Executive Vice President of Development at Intercept Pharmaceuticals, Inc. from 2008 to November 27, 2017. Dr. Shapiro has over 25 years of clinical development experience in the pharmaceutical industry, virtually all areas of pharmaceutical medicine ranging from large pharmaceutical companies to small biotechnology companies, academic medical centers and consulting. Dr. Shapiro served as Executive Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer of Idun Pharmaceuticals from 2000 to 2005. He served as the President of the Scripps Medical Research Center from 1995 to 1998. He served as Vice President of Clinical Research at Gensia Pharmaceuticals, Inc. from 1990 to 1998. He served as a Group Leader of hypertension clinical research at Merck Research Laboratories from 1985 to 1990. From 1998 to 2001, Dr. Shapiro headed a consulting company working with numerous companies ranging from large pharmaceutical companies to biotechnology startups. Dr. Shapiro founded a consulting company, Integrated Quality Resources, that focused on development stage biopharmaceutical companies and was active in this role from 2005 to 2008. From 1985 to 1990, he held a series of positions with increasing responsibility at Merck Research Laboratories during which he led the hypertension clinical research group, working on numerous drugs including calcium antagonists, ACE-inhibitors and losartan, the first angiotensin-II receptor antagonist. He served as Director & Group Leader, Hypertension Clinical Research at Merck, Sharp and Dohme Research Laboratories. He served as a Director of Altair Therapeutics, Inc. from 2008 to 2010. He has been Director at Arcturus Therapeutics Ltd. since November 2017. He serves as Member of Advisory Board at CovX Research LLC. He serves on the Board of Trustees and as Vice President of the American Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians. He is Member of the Royal College of Physicians (U.K.) and Member of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine, Royal College of Physicians (U.K.) and the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease. Dr. Shapiro has authored or co- authored more than 20 peer-reviewed publications. He undertook postgraduate medical training in internal and respiratory medicine at the University Hospitals in Oxford and the University of Vermont, where he was awarded a Fellowship from the American Heart Association. Dr. Shapiro holds Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees from Dundee University & Medical School and MRCP Diploma from the Royal College of Physicians (UK).
