View ArticleSending a large number of transactions to a Ledger hardware wallet is troublesome. If you receive a lot of small transactions from miningplease read this article carefully.
Failing to follow these instructions may lead to your funds becoming inaccessible on a Ledger device.
Receiving many transactions is troublesome
Receiving a large number of small payments, ordust payments, on an address controlled by your hardware wallet causes:
the saturation of the synchronization of your Blockchain transactions; and
an extremely long duration of transaction construction or validation.
Therefore, hardware wallets are not directly suited for receiving a large number of small transactions, such as the proceeds of mining activities.
Imagine that you have received 1,000 payments of 0.001 BTC and that you want to spend the total of 1 BTC. The secure chip in the hardware wallet will then have to construct a transaction of 1,000 inputs and sign every single input. This might take a few hours or might not succeed at all, since the chip may overheat or make a computation error.
If you've received a lot of transactions
If you have already received a large number of transactions on your hardware wallet, Ledger Live may show the following symptoms:
Cannot add an account as the app keeps loading in the Add accountwindow.
Affected accounts never fully synchronize.
Unable to send a transaction asit takes forever to calculate the Total to debit orthe Ledger device does notshow thetransaction to verify and sign it.
Consolidate coins of affected accounts
Try to consolidate your coins by sending a few larger payments to yourself. For example, if you have received 1,000 times 0.001 BTC, consolidate these inputs by sending 0.1 BTC to yourself and repeat this 10 times.
Alternatively, import your 24-word recovery phrase into a software wallet (at your own risk), preferably an offline one, and empty your account balance into an address that is derived from a newly generated seed.
Prevent by batching transactions
Set up a software wallet that receives all mining payments;
Regularly batch these proceeds into a larger transaction to send to your Ledger hardware wallet.
View ArticleYou can receive crypto assets on accounts managed by your Ledger Nano X device by generating a receive address in the Ledger Live app. Assets not supported by Ledger Live can be managed through an external wallet.
Security tip
Always send a small amount first. Then verify that the transaction was properly received by the recipient address before proceeding to send larger amounts.
When you are not using your Ledger Nano X, please be sure to lock it to ensure that no one else can use your device.
Before you begin
Ledger Live should beready to use.
The right app should be installed on your Ledger Nano X. Ex: install the Bitcoin appto receive Bitcoin.

Choose theAccount to credit.
Choose the Ledger Nano X that manages the account to credit.
Make sure the device is turned on and unlocked.
Open the crypto asset app as instructed.
Read the on-screen instructions and tap onVerifyto display a receive address on your Ledger Nano X.
View the address and verify that it is the same as the address shown in Ledger Live.
If the addresses match: Press the right button to select Approve, thenpress both buttons to confirm the address shown in Ledger Live.
If the addresses don't match:Select Rejecton your device and do not sendto it.
Click Copyor Shareand share the address with the sender of the transaction. Carefully check that the address does not change after you copy and paste it or tap the Re-verify button to display on your device again.
Disconnecting safely
You may safely disconnect your hardware wallet once you've verified an address or approved a transaction. Crypto assets are transferred on their blockchain network to the address generated by your device, nothing gets physically sent to your device.
Don't have your device?
On the account selection screen, click on Don't have your device?to generate a receive address.
The generated receive address does not benefit from the optimal level of security because the receive address on Ledger Live is not verified on your Ledger Nano X.
Why receive addresses change
You've generated an address for the selected account, that you can share with the sender.
Blockchains based on Bitcoin are public networks. Foroptimal privacy, the addresses of those crypto assets should generally not be reused after a transaction.
Ledger Live generates new addresses for crypto assets based on Bitcoin.
For crypto assets based on Bitcoin, the previous addresses do remain valid, but they don't offer an optimal level of privacy.

Linux
On Linux you need to create a set of udev rules to allow device access. Refer to the Chrome USB API documentation for details. Please follow the instructions below.
1. Setup
Check if the plugdev group exists by entering the command:
cat /etc/group | grep plugdev
Follow the steps below if the previous command did not returna result
Create the plugdev group:
sudogroupaddplugdev
Check if you are in the groupplugdev with the command:
groups
If the output does not contain plugdev, you are not in the plugdevgroup. Enter the command:
sudo gpasswd -a <user> plugdev
Note: replace <user> by your username, e.g for user "mike", it would be:sudo gpasswd -a mike plugdev.
Logout and login for the change to take effect. To verify you are now in the plugdev group, enter:
groups
and search for a plugdev occurrence. If it's not there, you've missed a step and should restart from step 1.
2. Add the udev rules
Enter the following command to automatically add the rules and reload udev:
wget -q -O -https://raw.githubusercontent.com/LedgerHQ/udev-rules/master/add_udev_rules.sh | sudo bash
Retry connecting your Ledger Nano S with Ledger Live. If it's still not working, continue to step 3: troubleshooting.
3. Troubleshooting
Try each of the following three options.
Option 1Edit the file/etc/udev/rules.d/20-hw1.rules file by adding the OWNER="<user>" parameter to each line, where <user>is your Linux user name. Then reload the rules as follows:
udevadm triggerudevadm control --reload-rules
Retry the connection with Ledger Live. If it does not work, try the next option.
Option 2 Edit the/etc/udev/rules.d/20-hw1.rules file and add the following lines:
KERNEL=="hidraw*", SUBSYSTEM=="hidraw", MODE="0660", GROUP="plugdev", ATTRS{idVendor}=="2c97"
KERNEL=="hidraw*", SUBSYSTEM=="hidraw", MODE="0660", GROUP="plugdev", ATTRS{idVendor}=="2581"
Then reload the rules:
udevadm triggerudevadm control --reload-rules

If everything is correct, confirm the transaction by pressing the right button to sign it.
View ArticleYou can choose the amount of network fees to include when you create a transaction. The amount of fees affects the processing speed of the transaction.
The use of network fees
The security of a blockchain network generally depends on the amount of work done by miners.
The miner that proposes the next block of transactions to the network, has to provide proof of the amount of work done to create the block.
If the transactions are valid and the proof of work is sufficient, the miner may collect the fees offered in the included transactions, as a reward for the work done.
Choose your network fees
When sending crypto assets, the network fees you offer determine your priority in the queue of pending transactions. Miners will prioritize transactions that offer high fees. Choose high fees if you require fast confirmation or lower fees if you can wait a while to save on fees.
For your convenience, Ledger Live dynamically estimates three levels of fees or allows custom fees for advanced users:
High:the transaction will roughly be included in the next block (about 10 min for Bitcoin)
Standard:the transaction will roughly be included within 3 blocks (about 30 min for Bitcoin)
Low:the transaction will roughly be included within 6 blocks (about 60 min for Bitcoin)
Ethereum network fees
For Ethereum and Ethereum-based cryptocurrencies, the network fees are set by thegas priceand the gas limit. Gas is a unit of cost for computing things on the Ethereum blockchain. The more things you need to compute, for example, the more complex the smart contract is, the more computing power you require.
You decide on two things: how much you're willing to pay per unit of gas, the gas price, and how much gas you're willing to spend on a transaction, the gas limit. Your maximum transaction fee is equal to gas price x gas limit. Once the gas limit is reached, you won't spend more.

Configure public key exports
The Bitcoin app can export your extended public key (xpub) to web apps in a U2F compatible web browser (Chrome, Opera or Firefox). The xpub is privacy-sensitive information, as all public addresses can be generated from it.
Public key exports by default require manual approval on the device to prevent inadvertent sharing of your public addresses. This setting can be configured as follows:
Open the Bitcoin app.
Navigate to Settings > Public key export approval.
Choose one of two options:
Manual approval (default): public key exports require a confirmation on the device.
Auto approval: public key exports are automatically approved.
Bitcoin address formats
Bitcoin accounts have an address format that is set when the account is added in Ledger Live. The address format you choose for your coins can always be changed: bitcoin can be sent from one address format to any other. The following address formats are supported:
Native SegWit
Native SegWit addresses start with bc1. These are bech32 addresses that offer better protection against typos and are cheaper to spend from on top of the advantages of SegWit addresses.
If your exchange does not support sending to a native segwit address, you may add a regular segwit account to temporarily send to and request your exchange to support sending to native segwit addresses.
SegWit
SegWit addressesstart with a 3. The SegWit upgrade reduces network fees, speeds up transaction signing on hardware wallets, and enables second-layer solutions like Lightning Network.
Legacy
Legacy addresses start with a 1. This is an older Bitcoin address format. Legacy addresses previously generated using a Ledger hardware wallet will show up when adding an account, but new legacy accounts cannot be added.
Address privacy
Bitcoin transactions are public information. Do not re-use your addresses foroptimal privacy.Ledger Live automatically generates new addresses and keeps track of your previous ones.Previous addresses do remain valid, but they don't offer an optimal level of privacy.

View ArticleSet up a passphrase to add a layer of security to your crypto assets. This option is only recommended for advanced users. Carefully read this article before setting up a passphrase.
Security tip
The recovery phrase and passphrase functionalities enable a range of security setups. You may use them to design the security strategy that meets your personal situation. Please do not overcomplicate things, the best security setup is one that you master and can execute with confidence.
How the passphrase works
The 24-word recovery phrase saved during initial setup of your Ledger device fully backs up the private keys providing access to your accounts. You must store it in a secure place.
The passphrase is essentially a password added to your 24-word recovery phrase that provides access to a whole new set of accounts.
The passphrase protects your crypto assets if your 24-word recovery phrase were to be compromised. To access passphrase-protected accounts, an attacker will need your recovery phrase as well as your secret passphrase.
Each different passphrase unlocks a unique set of accounts. You can use as many passphrases as you like.
Before you start
Your device is set up and runs the latest firmware.
Ensure your recovery phrase is accessible, just in case.
Read this article fully before you start.
Instructions
Getting started
Connect your Ledger Nano S and enter your PIN code.
Navigate to the Settings menu.
Go to Security.
Go to Passphrase and choose either of two options:
Attach to a PIN: Creates a second PIN code to unlock passphrase-protected accounts
Set temporary: Enter the passphrase each time you wish to access passphrase-protected accounts
Continue with the section below that matches the option you've chosen
Option 1 - Attach to PIN code
How it works
Attaching a passphrase to a new PIN code creates a new set of accounts on your Ledger Nano S based on a secret passphrase of your choice. You can access the accounts protected by this passphrase by entering a secondary PIN code.
The passphrase will be stored on the device until you overwrite it with another passphrase or until the device is reset.
Store a physical backup of the secret passphrase in a secure place. The device cannot display it after you've set it.
Instructions
Choose Attach to a PIN option from the Passphrase menu in the device security settings.
Create a secondary PIN code.
Re-enter the secondary PIN code to confirm it.
Choose and confirm a secret passphrase (max 100 characters).
Enter your primary PIN code to validate.
Your device will continue managing the accounts based on your recovery phrase without passphrase. Please turn off the device and enter your secondary PIN code to access the passphrase-protected accounts.
Option 2 - Set temporary passphrase
How it works
Using a temporary passphrase provides access to a new set of accounts on your Ledger Nano S for the duration of the session. Follow the instructions below each time you wish to access the accounts protected by the passphrase.
The accounts are based on a secret passphrase of your choice.
Store a physical backup of the secret passphrase in a secure place. The device cannot display it after initial setup.
Instructions
Choose Set temporary option from the Passphrase menu in the device security settings.
Choose and confirm a secret passphrase (max 100 characters).
Enter your primary PIN code to validate.

Recover passphrase accounts
In case of loss or a reset of your Ledger Nano S, you can recover access to your crypto assets on any Ledger device as long as you have both your 24-word recovery phrase and secret passphrase.
Instructions
Take out your recovery phrase and passphrase.
Restore the Ledger device from your recovery phrase.
Follow the instructions above for a temporary passphrase or attach to PIN code while taking into account:
Temporary passphrase: Simply enter the passphrase you've set up earlier to access the accounts protected by that passphrase.
Attach to PIN code:You can choose any PIN code, but you need to enter the passphrase you've set up earlier to access the accounts protected by that passphrase.
Passphrase security in practice
Adding accounts to Ledger Live
When you add an account, its extended public key (xpub) is stored in Ledger Live's user data folder, where it is encrypted by your password if you've set up password lock.
To be sure that Ledger Live does not store information about passphrase-protected accounts, you may can simply remove these accounts after you've managing them in Ledger Live. Some users have requested the ability to automatically forget accounts.
Plausible deniability
To protect yourself in case of physical threat, make sure your primary PIN code unlocks only a minor part of your crypto assets. Then set up a passphrase attached to a PIN code and store more significant amount of crypto assets on the passphrase-protected accounts.
If you are under duress to unlock your Ledger Nano S, you can surrender your main PIN code to the attacker while hiding the PIN code that unlocks your passphrase-protected accounts.
Recovery phrase protection
Its a good security practice to keep multiple copies of your Recovery sheet and to store them in different geographic locations. To mitigate the risk of losing your crypto assets if one of the copies of your recovery phrase is compromised, you can set up a passphrase. If you do so, make sure to store paper backups of your passphrase, preferably in geographic locations that are different from the locations where you keep a backup of your recovery phrase.

View ArticleIf you cannot access your Ledger Nano S device, you forget your PIN code or you lose the recovery phrase, you immediately need to follow the steps outlined in this article to prevent losing your crypto assets.
Make sure your recovery phrase stays securely stored. Protect your confidential PIN code and 24-word recovery phrase to guarantee the highest level of security offered by your Ledger device.
Instructions
Can't access your Ledger device?
In case of loss, theft, or destruction of your device, please restore your recovery phrase on any hardware or software wallet that supports 24-word recovery phrases.
You need the Recovery sheet on which you've saved your recovery phrase during setup.
Forgot your PIN code?
After three incorrect PIN code entries, Ledger hardware wallets reset to factory settings, erasing the private keys from their secure storage.
After the reset, simply restore the device from your recovery phrase.
Choose a new PIN code during the restoration process.
Lost your recovery phrase?
Your Recovery sheet is a full backup of the private keys that provide access to your private keys. You must store it in a secure location. Anyone with access to your Recovery sheet can take your crypto assets without knowing the PIN code of your device.
If you do lose your Recovery sheet:
Immediately send all your crypto assets to temporary accounts, like an exchange service or another hardware wallet.
Enter three wrong PIN codes to reset your Ledger Nano S.
Set up your Ledger Nano S as a new device.
Then transfer back your crypto assets to your newly configured device.

View ArticleBefore sending and receiving crypto assets, educate yourself to make informed decisions. Crypto assets you manage using your Ledger device can be targeted by malicious actors. Optimize your asset security by transacting with caution.
Don't trust, verify
Assume that your computer is compromised and that an address on your screen cannot be trusted.
Sending
Always send a small amount first. Then verify that the transaction was properly received by the recipient before proceeding to send larger amounts.
Use secondary communication means when obtaining a recipient address or QR code. Example:double-check an exchange deposit address through SMS, email or a messaging app when possible.
Check recipient addresses after you copy and paste. Malware on your computer might replace addresses in your clipboard.
Verify that the recipient address, amount and fees are correct and that they are the same on both your computer and the devices screen when sending a transaction.
Receiving
Verify that each address used to receive transactions belongs to you by displaying it on your hardware wallet. Addresses shown in Ledger Live could be manipulated if your computer is compromised.
Wait for a significant amount of confirmations before accepting a payment. For Bitcoin, six confirmations are recommended.

View ArticleYour address forBitcoin and Bitcoin-based crypto assets changes every time you receive a transaction. For other crypto assets (Ethereum, XRP, Stellar, etc.) the address stays the same.
Bitcoin transactions are public information. Addresses should not be re-used forbetter privacy.Ledger Live automatically generates new addresses using standards( BIP32 / BIP39 / BIP44 ) and keeps track of your previous ones.Previous addresses do remain valid, but they don't offer an optimal level of privacy.
How it works
Each of your crypto assets accounts has an extended public key, called an xpub. From this extended public key all your public addresses for that account are generated. Thanks to the xpub you can receive transactions on a new address that belong to the same account.
You can find the xpub of an account in Ledger Live by clicking the wrench icon on the account page. In the Edit account window, check the advanced logs.

ChoseChange validator or End delegation. The Summary page will then appear, where you can either change the validator or end the delegation.
Changing validator or ending the delegation will require a new delegation operation to be verified and approved on your Ledger device.
What happens to staking rewards when changing validator?
When changing validator, there should normally not be a loss of staking rewards, if the validators both pay out normally. Let's imagine changing from validator A to validator B. An initial waiting period of about 40 days starts until validator B should start paying rewards. During this time, validator A should continue paying rewards because validator A started paying rewards with an initial delay of about 40 days too.
More about Tezos and staking
Delegation and reveal operations
Reveal
The reveal operation makes the public address of a new Tezos account known to the Tezos network. This operation is required before any other transaction is possible and costs 0.0025 XTZ. Ledger Live automatically creates the reveal operation when you first send or delegate from an account.
Delegation
The delegationgrants an account's voting rights to a third-party validator, also known as a delegate. The voting rights increase the probability that a validator can make new blocks. Validators bake new blocks and endorses blocks as part of its operations and earns rewards by doing so.
Undelegation
The undelegationreturns the voting rights to the account itself. This operation is similar to the delegation operation except that the Tofield is empty.
Sending and receiving with delegated accounts
Delegated accounts can send and receive normally like any other account.
Received coins are added to the account balance. Because the account is delegated, the additional coins are automatically being staked as long as the validator has sufficient delegation capacity.
Sent coins are deducted from the account balance. The amount that has been sent is no longer being staked.
Migrating from third-party wallets
If you've used TezBox or Galleon wallet with your Ledger device, please note the following:
Ledger Live lists KT accounts as subaccounts. Ledger Live does not support sending to KT accounts, nor creating new KT accounts because of the Babylon Amendment. Sending from your KT accounts is supported.
In order to send to KT accounts, a third-party wallet needs to be used.
Parent accounts (TZ addresses) pay for fees of subaccounts (KT addresses) and must therefore always have some remaining XTZ. If there is insufficient balance left to pay for subaccount transactions, please find another way to refill the parent account.
Sending to new accounts burns fees
Sending XTZ to a new Tezos account will incur a cost of 0.257 XTZ in burnt fees for the account to be created. This is similar to the reveal operation, but the sender pays the fees.
Known issues
If you broadcast two transactions in a row, the second may fail and you will have to try again.
A bug may occur in the number of confirmations displayed in the transaction details window, showing an excessively high confirmation number.

Add accounts from multiple devices
A Ledger device gives access to the crypto asset accounts associated with the 24-word recovery phrase it was configured with.
Devices with different recovery phrases
If you've initialized multiple devices with different recovery phrases, each device controls a different set of accounts. In that case, follow these tips:
First, add the accounts linked to the first device, and repeat for your other device(s).
Name the accounts such as to know which device it belongs to, assuming that you've labeled the devices.
Always connect the device that controls the selected account when sending or receiving.
Devices with the same recovery phrase
If you've initialized one device and restored the same recovery phrase on another, both devices control the same accounts. In that case, both hardware wallets can be used interchangeably with Ledger Live. You can freely add accounts, as well as verify and sign transactions with either of the two devices.
Share a computer with multiple people
To share a computer with multiple owners of a Ledger device:
Add a user account in your operating system for each person.

Configure public key exports
The Litecoin app can export your extended public key (xpub) to web apps in a U2F compatible web browser (Chrome, Opera or Firefox). The xpub is privacy-sensitive information, as all public addresses can be generated from it.
Public key exports by default require manual approval on the device to prevent inadvertent sharing of your public addresses. This setting can be configured as follows:
Open the Litecoin app.
Navigate to Settings > Public key export approval.
Choose one of two options:
Manual approval (default): public key exports require a confirmation on the device.
Auto approval: public key exports are automatically approved.
Litecoin address formats
Legacy addresses start with an L. This is Litecoin's original address format. The option to add legacy addresses in Ledger Live is planned.
SegWit addressesstart with anM. The SegWit upgrade reduces network fees, speeds up transaction signing on hardware wallets, and enables second-layer solutions like Lightning Network. By default, new accounts added in Ledger Live are SegWit accounts. Tip:If your exchange does not yet support the SegWit address format, you can use this address converter to send LTC to your Ledger device.
Bech32 addresses start with ltc1. Theseare native SegWit addresses that feature safety and security improvements. This address format will be implemented in Ledger Live.
Address privacy
Litecoin transactions are public information. Do not re-use your addresses foroptimal privacy.Ledger Live automatically generates new addresses and keeps track of your previous ones.Previous addresses do remain valid, but they don't offer an optimal level of privacy.

How it works
Whena transactiondoes not entirely consume the coins it is spending, the difference is known as change. The change is sent back to an automatically generatedaddress called the change address.
Ledger Live automatically generates a fresh change address for every new transaction that does not fully spend its inputs.
Ledger Live automatically takes care of change, you do not have to track the coins on your change addresses.
It is not possible to check which address is your change address in Ledger Live. You can check your Bitcoin change addresses using Electrum.

Always verify receiving addresses on your Ledger device and send a small amount first before sending larger amounts. Never assume that an address shown in the transaction details is yours!
