Frequently Asked Questions About NUVI

  • How to Filter out Mentions in a Segment

Many different brand monitors will include their own social profiles to track overall reach and spread, but in order to view outside influence, it requires removing the social profiles.

In Segments, users can do this by using the Boolean Operation minus (-).

    Here is an example:

You can also use the same boolean operation to filter out keywords, networks, and other profiles.

Note: For social profile rules the name of the social profile is case sensitive.

  • How to Use Global Search

Once a monitor has been created and has collected enough data, users can easily filter through the mentions to find specific posts whether that is based on keywords, phrases, Twitter handle, location, or network. The elastic search is available towards the top of the page.

Click here for a full list of searchable terms.

As seen in the image above, the search is located at the top right in the monitor overview. Here users can input different search queries.

NUVI uses Boolean syntax for the search database.

    Most Common Searchable Fields

    author_username

    For example author_username:nuvi

Do not use the @ sign and do not use a space after the :

    Usernames are case sensitive

    Country_code

For example country code for US will be country_code:US

    United Kingdom = GB

    More examples: https://gist.github.com/adhipg/1600028

    Language

For example English: EN and Unknown: _u

    Language:EN

    More examples: https://github.com/Voles/MySQL-ISO-639-1-language-codes/blob/master/db.sql

    Network

For example: Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook

    network:Pinterest

When searching for a phrase, user quotations between the phrase. For example, "Utah Jazz".

The mentions will then be filtered by the search query, making it easier for the user to find particular mentions.

  • How to Use Free Form Query in Segments

Click Here to watch our recent webinar discussing free form query usage in Global Search and Segments!

The free-form query is a tool that allows advanced searches through Monitor data using syntax, available in either the Global Search bar (the upper-right hand corner of your screen within a monitor) or the Segment tool, which allows you to save your queries. Free Form Queries allow for a variety of complex and unique search commands, which you can combine and modify to meet your specific search needs.

    here

    Syntax

In Free Form Queries, you can use syntax commands to filter through your Monitors, creating a unique way to view and analyze your data. Through Syntax, you can combine commands, reverse commands, or make them dependent on one another. Syntax commands are available in both the Global Search and in Segments.

    AND, OR, and NOT

AND -The Syntax command AND (or &&) can be put between any two queries, making the two dependent. A search that uses AND will only pull mentions that align with BOTH applied rules.

"food truck" AND region_code:NY(All mentions that contain the phrase "food truck" that are sourced in New York State.)

sentiment_category:positive AND network:facebook(All mentions from Facebook with positive sentiment.)

OR -The Syntax command OR (or ||) can be put between any two queries, making the two independent. A search that uses OR will pull mentions that align with EITHER applied rule.

"food truck" OR region_code:NY(All mentions that contain the phrase "food truck"(from anywhere in the world), and all mentions from New York State(with no need to contain "food truck".))

sentiment_category:positive OR network:facebook(All positive mentions(any network) and all posts from Facebook(any sentiment))

NOT -The Syntax command NOT (or !) can be put between any two queries, making the two dependent. A search that uses NOT will pull mentions that align with one applied rule and do NOT align with the other.

"food truck" NOT region_code:NY(All mentions that contain the phrase "food truck" that are NOT from New York State.)

sentiment_category:positive NOT network:facebook(All mentions with positive sentiment that are NOT from Facebook)

    Wildcards (? and *)

Wildcard modifiers can be used to account for misspellings and uncertainty in your commands. Use?to replace one character in a word or phrase, and use* to replace 0 or more characters.

"gr?y cars for sale"(There are two common ways to spell the color gray/grey, so this modifier will bring in all posts containing "gray cars for sale" or "grey cars for sale")

skydiv*(In a monitor about skydiving, this modifier will bring in all posts containing "skydive","skydiving","skydived", etc.)

    Booleans (+ and -)

Another way to designate Syntax Commands is through Booleans, the + and - symbols. Use +to include a command or keyword/phrase, and use- to exclude a command or keyword/phrase.

    +language:en(All posts in English)

-"for sale"(All posts without the phrase "for sale")

    Grouping

By using Parentheses in your Free Form Queries, you can combine and group Syntax commands. Use parentheses when you have 3 or more commands you want to consider.

("food truck" AND region_code:NY) NOT "street tacos"(All posts from New York State that contain the phrase "food truck" and NOT the phrase "street tacos")

(sentiment_category:positive OR network:facebook) AND hashtags:pizzahut(All posts with positive sentiment containing #pizzahut and all Facebook posts containing #pizzahut)

    Global Search

Free Form query is also used in the Global Search Bar. The Global Search Bar allows you to quickly segment data without having to manually create a full segment. Learn how to use those commands HERE.

    Useful Commands

Within either Global Search or Segments, there are a variety of commands available to filter through your data, such as including/excluding reshares, only including mentions from a specific region or country, and filtering by influencer score. For a full list of commands, click here.

    Filter by Keywords / Phrases

Search your Monitor for posts containing a specific keyword or key phrase.

"cat video"(All posts containing the phrase "cat video")

party(All posts containing the keyword "party")

(No command is required for this field, just type your keyword. Capitalization does not matter in this command, but you must put quotation marks around phrases.)

    Filter by Influencer Score

Display mentions based on influencer score:

    author_klout_score:>90(greater than 90)

    author_klout_score:50(equals 50)

    author_klout_score:<40(less than 40)

    Filter by Author

Username - Search your monitor for all posts by one author via their network handle.

    author_username:NBA(all posts by @NBA)

(This field is case sensitive, so "author_username:nba" will not pull in posts from @NBA)

Real Name - Search your monitor for all posts by one author, using their profile name rather than their handle.

    author_real_name:DVDDY(all posts by @DVDDYMUSIC)

(This field is case sensitive and requires quotation marks around a multi-word name, ie. "Tom Holland")

    Filter by Country

Search your Monitor for all posts in one country using the two-digit country code (ISO 3166).

country_code:US(All posts within the US. For a list of country codes, click here.)

(The country code must be in ALL CAPS. At this time, we have no way to filter for mentions without a country code. Country Codes are only available for Twitter, Instagram, Reddit, and RSS Feeds.)

    Filter by Region

Search your Monitor for all posts in one region, using the 1-3 digit region code. (ISO 3166).

region_code:UT(All posts in Utah, USA. For a list of region codes, click here.)

(The region code must be in ALL CAPS. At this time, we have no way to filter for mentions without a region code. Region Codes are only available for Twitter and Instagram.)

NUVI Tip:Region codes are not country sensitive, ie. "region_code:B" will pull in mentions from both Barcelona and Budapest. Use a Syntax command to fix this, ie. "country_code:ES" (Spain) "AND region_code:B" (to pull in ONLY mentions from Barcelona, Spain.)

    Include / Exclude Reshares

Search your Monitor for only posts that have been reshared (retweeted), or exclude this content.

    is_reshare:true(Only look at reshared content)

    is_reshare:false(Remove all reshared content)

(The NUVI software classifies a reshare as either a Retweet on Twitter or a unique post with the exact same content.)

    Filter by Hashtag

Search your Monitor for posts that contain a specific hashtag.

    hashtags:tuesdaythoughts(All posts with #tuesdaythoughts)

(All hashtags must be in lowercase. However, this will pull all capitalizations, ie. "hashtags:nba" will pull in posts with #NBA, #nba, #Nba, etc.)

    Filter by Proximity

Search your Monitor for posts containing two or more words within a specific proximity.

"guitar sale"~5(All posts that contain "guitar" and "sale" within 5 words of each other, ie. "guitar for sale", "for sale - acoustic guitar" "my old guitar is for sale", etc.)

(The maximum proximity allowed by the software is 5 words apart.)

    Filter by Language

Search your Monitor for posts in a specific language.

language:en (All posts in English. For a list of language codes, click here.)

language:_u(All posts in an unknown language. This includes posts containing multiple languages, emojis, or computer symbols like #, @, or &.)

(All language codes must be in lowercase. 60 languages are available to search, listed.)

    Filter by Network

Search your Monitor for posts from a specific network.

    network:twitter(All twitter posts)

network:rss (All blog, news, RSS posts)

(All networks must be in lowercase. Network search is not compatible with Google+.)

    Filter by URL

Search your Monitor for posts containing a trending URL.

normalized_urls:"https://twitter.com/SamuelLJackson?lang=en" (All mentions containing a URL to Samuel L. Jackson's Twitter)

(All URL's are case sensitive to exactly how they are mentioned in the post, ie. "Twitter.com" will register as a different URL to "twitter.com". Quotation marks around the URL are essential, without them you will pull no data)

    Filter by Intention ("Intents")

Search your monitor for posts containing 1 of 4 "intents," to buy, sell, recommend, or quit.

intents:buy(Only posts looking to make a purchase.)

intents:sell(Only posts looking to sell a product or service.)

intents:recommend(Only posts looking for a recommendation.)

intents:quit(Only posts looking to leave a current product or service.)

(All intents must be in lowercase and spelled correctly to pull data)

    Filter by Sentiment

Category - Search your Monitor for posts with a specific sentiment type.

sentiment_category:positive (Only posts with positive sentiment)

sentiment_category:neutral (Only posts with neutral sentiment)

sentiment_category:negative (Only posts with negative sentiment)

(All sentiment categories must be in lowercase.)

Score- Search your Monitor for posts within a sentiment score range. Our Sentiment partner, Lexalytics, ranks all posts in your Monitor with a sentiment score between 1 and -1. Positive, Neutral, and Negative rankings are assigned based on the following:

    1 to 0.31: Positive Sentiment

    0.3 to -0.3: Neutral Sentiment

    -0.31 to -1: Negative Sentiment

Use the modifiers > and < to look at sentiment score within a specific range.

    sentiment_score:<-0.3(All posts with negative sentiment)

sentiment_score:>0(All posts from perfectly neutral to fully positive sentiment)

(Keep in mind, no posts have a sentiment score outside of -1 to 1, so if this command is not pulling mentions, make sure to check your parameters)

Overall, Free Form Queries can be used to filter Monitor data in a variety of ways. Use the Global Search bar for a one-time search, and the Free Form Query box in Segments to save commands and syntax for your entire company, permanently. Need more information? Contact your CSM.

  • This article is intended for new users to Nuvi. This article will go over the basic functions of Monitors and the tools contained within. Please feel free to reach out to [email protected] if you have any additional questions.

    Monitors:

One can view their monitors in several different ways including:

    Line Chart

    Bar Chart

    Bubble Stream

    World Deck

    Mentions Feed

    Here

Each view has their own Advantages.

Line Chart: Is the default view for monitor data. It has a cool tool called the Range Inspector. Using the Range Inspector one can view mentions from a specific timeframe. It is useful for quickly viewing spikes in mention volume and for taking a quick look into a monitor. Simply click and drag over the area to be inspected.

Bar Chart: They're Bars, nothing special.

Bubble Stream: The Bubble Stream is Nuvi's trademark data viewing setting. The Stream is limited to 1000 bubbles. Which mentions are included are determined by influencer score. When using the bubble stream one can:

    Click on each individual mention.

Determine the sentiment of a mention - Red for negative, Blue for neutral, Green for positive.

Determine the influencer score of an author - The larger the dot, the greater the influence.

View re-shares - Each re-share is connected to the original tweet by a white line. This can be seen by hovering your mouse over retweets.

Change the sentiment of a mention - Changing the sentiment of a mention will automatically change the sentiment of any re-share.

World Deck: The World Deck enables you to see where mentions are being posted from.

Note: Large portions of Social Media Users do not give their location. The World Deck will only show the mentions of authors that share that information.

Mentions Feed:Click Here for more information.

    Reach and Spread:

Reach and spread cover the potential number of people who have seen mentions that were pulled into your monitor.

Reach: The combined follower count of every author pulled into a monitor.

Spread: The combined follower count of those who re-shared any mention pulled into a monitor.

    Sentiment:

Sentiment is the attitude of a mention. An AI determines the sentiment of the post by assigning a point value to specific words in a post. If the majority of points given are negative, the post is given a negative sentiment. The AI is generally accurate, but it will sometimes get sentiment wrong. For example, Someone may use the words sick or wicked when describing a metal song, but the AI will think that is negative. One can change a mention's sentiment via the Bubble Stream or in the Mentions Feed.

    Influencers:

Influencers gives additional information regarding the Authors in a monitor. Namely:

    Most Reach

Influencer Score - This is determined by follower count, interaction, and a couple of other factors. The score is similar to a Klout Score.

    Most Spread

    Most Active

    Most Mentioned

    Most Reshares

The influencers can be clicked on to pull up more information.

Trends: Trends provide more info on trends in a monitor, including:

    Keywords

    URLs

    Hashtags

    Positive Terms

    Negative Terms

    Topic Keyword Frequency

    Networks

    Categories

The Trends functionality is very similar to Influencers. If a client has Segments activated there is a cool tool called Quick segments. Click for more information.

    Demographics:

    Demographics gives additional information on:

Country - This is under the same stipulation as the World Deck. Any Author that doesn't share their location will appear as Unspecified.

    Languages

Gender -Gender is assigned based on the Nuvi AI learning and using language trends, username commonalities, etc.

  • How to Create Segments

    Watch a tutorial video Here.

A segment is an extension of a monitor that allows users to select a smaller portion of the data to run analytics and reports on. In short, a segment is an advanced search for a monitor.

To create a segment, open a monitor and select the segment box located near the top of the monitor. An option will appear that says + Create New Segment.

For segments, there are many different options available to shorten the range of data displayed.

First, name the segment. From there, the first option is the free form query. The free-form query is a tool that allows advanced searches using syntax. (Character limit for free form box is20,480 characters)

Users can use theAND OR highlighted below to allow the segment to either allow other rules to be included or required along the free-form query box. For example, if the user has a rule in the free form and a rule under Keywords, the AND will require both rules to be included. If OR is selected, either rule is applicable.

A How-Tois available as well with examples of how to use the free-form query box.

The next option is based on Network, Location, and Language. Networks include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, Google+, Automattic, Pinterest, Reddit, Product Review, etc. Location is based solely on the Country. Segments are available for over 50 different languages.

Next, users have the option of keywords, phrases, and tags.

Keywords allow the user to add single words that must be included in the search. Keywords follow the same pattern as settings rules in the rule builder.

Phrases allow the user to add multiple strings of words within one rule. Phrases follow the same pattern as settings rules in the rule builder.

Note: When using both the keywords and phrase rules, it will look for both the phrase and keyword together. (Keywords AND Phrases)

Tags allow the user to filter messages that have manually be tagged. Users can segment based on any one or more Tags.

The following section is based on Influencers. The user can adjust the segment to only include influencers with a particular score, reach, or spread. Users can also segment based on gender.

The final option of segmenting is the Sentiment Category. Users can adjust it based on Positive, Negative, or Neutral sentiment.

Once all the changes have been made, click Save Segment. The segment will now display when selecting Segments. The user can select the new segment and see how the data changes based on the segment.

  • Reach: Is the sum of all original author's follower counts (minus duplicate authors).

Spread: Is the sum of all secondary (retweets) author's follower counts (minus duplicate authors).

    Some examples:

If I post 10 times during a time period, I am the only one that posts, and I have 100 followers, the reach would be 100. (I was the original author, and we minus duplicate authors).

If you post 10 times during a time period, I retweet one of your posts, I have 100 followers, and you have 589. The reach would be 589 (your follower count since you are the original author), and the spread would be 100 (my follower count since I am a secondary author).

  • Facebook:

Due to Facebook getting into some hot water back in 2018 in regards to data sharing, they've really started limiting the amount of data they're willing to share with social media listening apps like Nuvi. This is an industry wide issue. This article is going to show you how to maximize the amount of data being pulled into your monitor.

    1. Identify which public pages you would like to pull in data from. This can be other public pages in your industry or maybe even competitors. Really whoever you think would be talking about your product or services. Make sure to save their handles you will need them.

    2. Hop into your monitor rules by clicking Edit Monitor and click on +Add New Rule Group. Once you're there, select Social Profiles from the drop down menu, select Facebook, and type in the handle of the public page.(Be sure to leave out the @, the app will automatically be added once you click save.) Click Save.

    here

    3. Click on Add Rule and copy and paste your keyword list into the new rule. (If you're using a language rule be sure to include Unknown with your other languages, this will help pull in hashtags.) Click Save. Feel free to add any other rules at this time as well.

    4. You're done! Just repeat this process with every Facebook Public page you would like to receive data from. Depending on how many you need to add, it may be advantageous to create some monitor templates. Click here to find out more about those.

For more information on how the Facebook Lawsuits impact social listening, click here.

    Instagram:

In December of 2018, Instagram made updates to their API that could limit the amount of Instagram mentions pulling into your monitors.

Here are some things to consider when setting up your monitor to help pull in as many Instagram mentions as possible.

    1. Hashtags - Instagram now only allows the monitoring of hashtags. When setting up your rules, ensure that you include as many hashtag variations as possible.

    2. Locations - Instagram has blocked social listening platforms from seeing the location of an Instagram post. This means that if you have a location rule within your rule group, this can block Instagram mentions from being pulled in.

    3. Languages - If you are adding a language rule, be sure to include Unknown. This will pull in any languages that cannot be detected by a browser - including hashtags and emojis.

Question: What if I need to limit by location?

Answer: Our suggestion would be to set up one rule group like you regularly would using keywords, locations, etc, and a second rule group that includes only hashtags and the Instagram network:

You can refine the Instagram rule group even further by adding location hashtags as a second words rule:

    Question:

I did not authorize my Instagram account for monitors under Social Profiles. Will this prevent me from pulling in Instagram mentions?

    Answer:

No, you will still be able to see Instagram mentions as long as your rules are set up correctly. However, we do recommend that you authorize your Instagram account for monitors under Social Profiles. This helps the Nuvi app to be allotted more Instagram data overall.

  • Over the past year, Facebook has been facing several lawsuits that are directly related to potentially illegal data-sharing, data mining, and privacy scandals. As a result, they have had to implement security measures that have made it much more difficult to pull data from the platforms.

These lawsuits have repercussions that affect a variety of industries, but especially companies that specialize in social listening. This article is designed to help you understand how these changes will affect your social listening experience.

    Background

To fully understand how social listening software is affected by the Facebook lawsuits, it is important to know some of the details that lead to these repercussions.

In 2018, it was revealed that a political consulting/data mining company called Cambridge Analytica had obtained data from more than 87 million Facebook users. In turn, they used this data to help the political campaigns of both Donald Trump and Ted Cruz.

Its important to note that its not necessarily illegal or even shady to obtain information through Facebook. In fact, over 270,000 users of a Facebook app called This Is Your Digital Life authorized Global Science Research (the creators of the app) to use their information.

However, Global Science Research abused these permissions to gather the data from the millions of friends of that original 270,000 people. They then sold it to Cambridge Analytica, even when the vast majority of those people never authorized their information to be used. Because of this misappropriation of data and trust of the general public, Facebook was fined 5 billion dollars from the results of the lawsuits.

    Outcome

Even for a company valued at more than $130 billion [1], $5 billion is a lot of money. So, in an effort to correct their mistakes and double down on privacy, Facebook (and in turn Instagram) made several updates to their API (Application Programming Interface).

An API can be defined as an agreement with a client and the server, such that if the client asks for something in a specific way, the server will always respond in a specific format or launch a previously defined action. [2] This contract affects the amount of data and personal information that is shared with third-party clients.

This is a very important thing to note because social listening software is considered third-party software. These API changes use subscriptions that monitor and search for hashtag mentions. So when API endpoints are taken away and rate limits (rate limits are the number of times the API can be used in an hour) are decreased, it significantly impacts these services. [3] Social listening companies will still get some data, but significantly less than they used to.

Facebook also updated how profile links work. According to Facebook itself, these links are intended to allow people who have social interactions in your app to find and connect with each other on Facebook. [4] With the new API update, Facebook made it much more difficult to use this feature in other, unintended ways like gathering the data from millions of users through the permissions of their friends.

What This Means For Social Listening

So while you might find that you are getting much more information from Twitter than Facebook and Instagram, you are not alone. Facebook and Instagram altered these APIs across the board and all third party applications or software are only able to gather a fraction of the data that they once could.

However, it is important to note that the severity of these restrictions could lessen as the spotlight slowly moves away from Facebook. Regardless, for the time being, Facebook users and the general public are fed up with a lack of privacy on the internet, so the restrictions on Facebook and Instagram probablywon'tchange anytime soon.

  • Have you found yourself struggling when its time to make your monitor rules? Or perhaps, your monitor continues to bring in irrelevant mentions and youre not sure how to fix it? The monitor creation process can be intimidating at first, but with a few tips, you will be a professional in no time.

Keep reading to learn about the most common mistakes people make in monitor creation and tips that will help you build the best monitors possible.

The BasicsBefore you start building your monitor, you will need to understand some of the basics of monitor rules.

And vs. Or RulesRule groups can contain one or more individual rules which are separated by the word and. Consequently, we refer to these rules as and rules. For and rules, each mention has to meet every rule criterion within a rule group to be pulled into the monitor. As a result, adding and rules narrows your search.

Multiple rule groups within the same monitor rules are called or rules. Although the word OR is not visible like with the and rules, the monitor will bring in any mentions that match all the criteria in at least one of the rule groups. So a monitor could bring in a mention that matches one rule group or the other. Multiple or rule groups will broaden your search.

Primary vs. Secondary KeywordsWhen creating monitors, you will usually use two different types of keywords. Knowing the difference between the two will help you with your research as well as create the most effective rules.

Primary keywords are keywords that include the brand name. These can be any handles, hashtags, or words that have the brand name within them. Secondary keywords can include things like products associated with the brand, commonly used hashtags thatdon'tinclude brand name or campaign hashtags.

Brand, competitor, and crisis monitors usually require both primary and secondary keywords, while industry monitors usually require just secondary keywords.

Four Tips For Creating Successful MonitorsNow that you understand the fundamentals, its time to start creating your monitor rules. Below we will talk about four tips that will help you build effective monitors, optimize your search across platforms, and gain the most valuable insights.

Tip #1: Do Your ResearchThorough research is key to effective monitor builds. Here are a few places to start.

Look up handles for all social media platforms associated with the brand and research brands that post frequently about or partner with the company. Make a list of names or hashtags associated products and campaigns. Separate your primary and secondary keywords into two different lists. Making a list beforehand will help your rules be cleaner and more effective. You probablywon'tget it perfect the first time around, and you will need to tweak the rules over time but this will help you get the best start.

Tip #2: Simple is BestOne of the most common mistakes that people make is including keyword phrases that are too long. If you are trying to bring in as many mentions as possible about your brand or the subject, thisisn'tthe best approach.

Its best to keep it simple with 1-2 words in your keyword phrases max. What this does is allow room for error and variation. Heres an example of what we mean.

If we wanted to monitor the phrase Popeyes chicken sandwich it would be best to break it down. To do this, first we will identify the primary and secondary keywords. In this case, the primary keyword is Popeyes and the secondary keywords are chicken sandwich.

Instead of typing in the phrase Popeyes chicken sandwich, we will create one rule for my primary keywords and another one for my secondary keywords. This will help diversify the search by accounting for errors as well as all the different ways people could talk about Popeyes chicken sandwich in a sentence. Here are examples of what we mean:

    Help Center

Including long phrases like seen above in the Dont example, prevents you from being able to account for all the variations that people could use. It also limits your search to very specific mentions.

Instead, try layering multiple rules on each other with primary keywords in one rule group, and secondary keywords in the second rule group. This simplifies your search and will allow you to bring in more related mentions. Remember to simplify!

Tip #3: Optimize for Social PlatformsBecause of the new restrictions on Facebook and Instagrams API, it can be difficult to pull in mentions from these platforms. However, there are a few things you can do to optimize your search so that you have the best chance possible to pull posts in from them.

Optimizing your monitor search for Facebook and Instagram is especially useful for brand, crisis, or campaign monitors, and it doesnt take much. The first thing you want to do is make sure that your social profiles are connected to your account. If you havent already done this, you can learn how to do that Here.

Once your Facebook and Instagram accounts are connected, you can then include rule groups that will help optimize your search of those platforms. Here is a helpful article on how to build these rules.

Its important to remember that Facebooks API only allows you to pull information from public business pages. You can include your public business page, or any page that may post frequently about you. If you need help finding pages that post about you, you can look under the Community Tab on the Facebook business profile, and find a list of the most recent tags.

If you are including social profile handles thataren'tyour own, its important to also include primary and secondary keywords in the rule group. This will ensure that you are pulling in only their posts that are relevant to you. Here is an example:

Not including these optimization rules will almost guarantee that youwon'tpull in mentions from these platforms. Facebook wants us to be as specific as possible with searches, and is more likely to give us these mentions if we are being intentional with our search.

Tip #4: Narrow With Inclusions, Not With ExclusionsWhen creating your rules, you have the option to either include or exclude certain keywords, social profiles, locations, and more. Its common for people to try to narrow their search results by excluding information, but too many exclusions can often lead to contradicting rules and redundancies if youre not careful. Here are a few examples of commonly made mistakes with exclusion rules, and how to avoid them.

    Example 1: Redundancies

When first creating a monitor, its common to bring in unrelated mentions that have similar names to your company or product. Common practice for these exclusions is including them on every single rule group, but sometimes thatisn'tnecessary.

Below is an example of a common mistake that people make when using exclusion rules. We want to bring in any time the domain for Popeyes is mentioned but we also excluded a few specific keywords and unrelated accounts with similar names.

In this case, the exclusionsaren'tnecessary because, by default, anyone who mentions the Popeyes domain will be talking specifically about Popeyes and not an unrelated topic or account.

Instead, a single inclusion rule for the domain name is all you need. Because the domain name is specific to Popeyes Chicken, the other exclusions are redundant and unnecessary.

The same logic works for rules that include specific social profiles. As seen in the example below, youdon'tneed to create exclusions for keywords, social profiles, languages, or location because, by default, the Popeyes Twitter account is already relevant to the search without adding more rules.

    Example 2: Contradictions

The second most common mistake that people make is including so many exclusions that the rules start to contradict each other. If you ever have a difficult time saving your monitor, it may be for this reason.

Heres an example below. The highlighted green boxes shows where the @popeyeschicken handle was mentioned in both an inclusion and an exclusion rule. When adding exclusions rules, always double check to make sure youdon'thave any contradictions.

Other examples of contradictions below are seen in how weve said we only want tweets from @popeyeschicken Twitter, but we have also included a rule to specify other social platforms as well. By default, the rule group will only bring in Twitter mentions from the @popeyeschicken twitter, and not any other social platforms or profiles. Usually, you can narrow your monitor down with inclusion rules before you ever have to consider exclusions. This will keep your monitor rules simple and effective. There are times that exclusions are necessary which we will talk about below.

    When Are Exclusions Necessary?

Lets sayyou'vebeen as specific as you can with inclusion rules, yet you are still getting unrelated mentions pulled into your monitor. Then its probably time to use a few exclusion rules.

Here are a few examples of when exclusions may be necessary:

When common terms are used across different industries

When youdon'twant to see your own posts

When not safe for work terms frequently pop up

When spam accounts keep popping up even with narrowed results

Exclusions rules are a really helpful tool. However, its important to not overuse and over complicate them to avoid redundancies and contradictions within your rule groups.

    Better Monitors, Better Results

Learning how to build monitors effectively by doing your research, keeping it simple, optimizing across platforms, and avoiding redundancies and contradictions is important. These simple tips will help you create the most effective monitors and bring in the best results possible. Keeping these results as clean and accurate as possible is what will help you drive important business decisions for your team and company.

  • Creating a New Monitor

Creating a new Monitor enables you to start gathering social data. Feel free to use Control F or Command F to skip to a specific section.

    Create Monitor

To begin, click on the + Create Monitor button or the green+at the top right of the Monitors Overview page.

    Here

    Name Your Monitor

Next, we'll name our monitor. You can update the name at any time and it will be reflected on the Monitors Overview page.

NUVI Tip: Name your monitor something relative to the data or campaign.

    Monitor Rules

To set up a monitor, start by adding a new rule group.

Within each rule group, you'll create a set of rules. Your monitor will then crawl all the social media posts on the web and only show you the posts that meet your set of rules.

Rules are broken up into three parts:

Include post with or Exclude posts with

    All or Any

    Search Options

Tell the rule whether you want to include or exclude all or any posts that contain words, character sets, proximity, domains, languages, networks, social profiles, map regions, locations, custom data sources, or places.

    Let's create our first rule!

In this example, we'llInclude posts with +Any+Wordsand then enterSanta Cruz then click+Add. Voila! Our first rule has been created.

    A few things you'll notice:

    1. Capitalization doesn't matter - rules are not casesensitive.

    2. "All" Rules will require a post to contain every keyword that is in your rule in the same post.

    Rule Definitions

    Words

Words can be singularwords, phrases, or hashtags. Monitors no longer require quotations for exact matches, simply separate phrases with commas.

    Examples:

    santa cruz, bikes, #santacruzbikes

    Character Sets

Think of Character Sets as words contained in other words. These are great for acronyms that are used in handles, hashtags, etc. Or if you want to capture multiple uses of a word such as sick, sickening, sicken, sicker, sickest, etc.

    Example: NUVI would bring innuvi, @nuvi, @nuvisolutions, @nuvihelp, #nuvi, #nuviknows, #nuvisolutions, #nuvietc.

Key Note: By adding a Character Set to your query, you will not be able to get a monitor preview.

    Proximity

When editing a monitor, the user can use the proximity search rule to find relevant data within the space of another word or phrase.

Included in the Edit monitor are rules on how to use the Proximity rules.

Proximity allows you to match posts based on the proximity of 2 or more words (case insensitive).

Proximity will look at before and after 4 keywords to find matches. (Twitter only allows a 2-word look before)

For example, if the sentence isEngineering has started to show videos of new research.

You could match this sentence by adding4 engineering videos. Becauseengineeringandvideosare within4words of each other.

The maximum limit for proximity search is 5 words from each other.

    Domains

Adding domains allow you to track when URLs are shared in a mention. If you wanted to track a specific URL, enter it in and Monitors will track it everytime it gets shared. All networks can be pulled when using the Domains rule.

    Example: santacruzbicycles.com

    Social Profiles

Adding Social profiles allow you to track when a particular social profile shares or posts. If you wanted to track a specific social profile, enter it in and Monitors will track it every time the profile posts. Only public profiles are able to be tracked.

Social profiles can be tracked on these networks:

    Automattic

    Blogs, News, RSS Feeds

    Facebook

    Instagram

    Pinterest

    Reddit

    Stack Overflow

    Twitter

    Youtube

    Example: @nuvi

Note: In order to request data from Specific Facebook social profiles, one must add the social profile to a rule in one of their monitors. You can filter what mentions are received from this rule by adding a word or other rule group. Click for more information.

    Custom Data Sources

You can inject your own personal data using an API*. You can ingest data from Slack, Gmail, etc.

Custom data can be added to the ruleset. A list of the available data sources will display.

Ask your Client Success Manager about this.

*This requires development and an additional charge to enable

    Languages

In Monitors, you can select which languages to pull mentions from. By default, all are selected for the broadest search possible. We have the capability of tracking over 60 languages.

    Youtube

Key Note: Unless Twitter is a selected network, you're unable to run a monitor preview.

    Map Regions

Map Regions are geographical locations you can set to only pull mentions from. They are great to use for events in cities or to listen to what people are saying in a specific location, etc.

To create a geo-location, click the Map Regions query option.

You then can type in a location in the map search bar and select the location to add it to your list of tracked locations. By default, it will set a 25-mile radius (40-km radius) and can be resized down to 1-mile radius (1.6-km radius).

    Locations

Locations are similar to Map Regions but encompass Countries, States, and Provinces.Map regions are more of a geo-fence.

To add a Location, simple select Locations from the query options and then either select Countries or States and Provinces.Type in the location and check the box to select it, then clickAdd.

Note: Instagram no longer provides this data. Any rule group with a location will not pull IG data.

    Monitor Preview:

Previewing enables you to get a quick look at the types of mentions your monitor may pull based on the past 30-days of Twitter data.

After you've created your query rules, click Preview to get an insight into whether or not the monitor will pull data you're looking for.

    Save Monitor

Once you've created or made changes, click Save Monitor to save your changes.

This will run a preview and show you an estimation of how many mentions should be pulled.

Click Save to save your monitor or click Cancel to remain to edit.Note: The monitor will start pulling in data the moment you hit save. However, it will not pull in retroactive data by itself. You would need to do a historical job to pull in retroactive Twitter data.

    Back to Monitor:

Clicking Back to Monitor will discard any changes you've made.

  • Question: Do I need to be an admin of the Instagram account and Facebook account to authenticate?

Answer: Yes, you will need to have admin access to the Facebook or Instagram account in order to authenticate it through the Nuvi app.

Question: Will connecting my Facebook/Instagram make it so that my accounts mentions will be able to pull into a monitor?

Answer: Authorizing your Facebook or Instagram account doesnt specifically give us the data and mentions from your account. Instead, it lets Facebook and Instagram know that Nuvi has a higher amount of tokens registered and therefore should be allotted more data. This means that well be able to pull in a higher quantity of Facebook and Instagram mentions overall.

Question: How often does Nuvi pull Instagram data? How many API calls a day, and how frequently?

Answer: We continually pull instagram data. We are limited based on rates determined by Instagram. We query each hashtag in our system at least once per hour.

Question: What level (transparency) of information does Facebook or Instagram receive for accounts registered with NUVI? (i.e. does Facebook log that ABC Corporate has registered an account?)

  • Nuvi recently released a new feature that allows a user to auto-pause a monitor after a selected timeframe/Volume of mentions. Below are the steps required to enable this function.

    1. Go to the Monitors Tab in the Nuvi app, click on the ellipsis (3 dot) button on a monitor needing to be paused, and select Edit Monitor.

    [email protected]

    2. Click on Settings and scroll down to Auto-Pause.

    3. Click the toggle button, select/confirm the pause date, and click save at the top of the screen.

The selected monitor should now be primed to pause at the selected time.

In order to pause by volume simply click the slider to enable it, enter in the desired pause amount, and click save in the top right of the screen.

Note: The Monitor will not pause at that exact number of mentions. There is generally a little bit of a delay between hitting the limit and the actual pausing of the monitor.

    Watch a tutorial video here.

On the overview page of a monitor, in the upper right-hand corner of the screen, there is a Dashboard icon for viewing recent posts.

Once selected, it will display a limited number of posts dating most recently. To view the full screen of posts, select the Double Arrow icon.

Once in the full-screen view of the posts, users can adjust the sentiment for posts or delete mentions. Users can also adjust the number of posts displayed on each page. The maximum is 1000 posts.

After selecting Edit Posts, check the Select All button and then select Change Sentiment and choose the sentiment wanted. In this case, we'll change all mentions to positive sentiment. The most mentions that can be changed at once is 1000. Make sure the number of posts displayed says 1000.

First, we will begin by navigating to the Social Profiles page of your company. If you do not have access to this page you will need to ask your company admin to assist.

You will then have another dialog box that will pop up asking if you allow access for the NUVI Data Collector to your profile. You have to select 'Allow'for your profile to be correctly connected. Once it has been connected your profile will appear in the box.

**In order to monitor mentions on Instagram, youll need a Facebook User that has a role on a Page, and that Page will need to be connected to your Instagram Business Account. Click Add Profile to authorize your Facebook account and grant access to the Monitors app.

  • The Monitor Creation Wizard is a new tool created to help new Nuvi users create their first monitors.

How to find the Monitor Creation Wizard:

Once logged into the Nuvi app, click on the Monitors Tab in the top right, click on the green + button in the top right of the page, and select Get Started.

    HERE

Note: Click Advanced Setup to go to the regular monitor creation screen.

How to use the Monitor Creation Wizard:

The Wizard is divided into 5 steps:

    1. Monitor Name

Create a monitor name and click Continue.

    2. Rules

The Monitor Rules are split into 6 different categories:

Keywords - Searches all social platforms for any mention that includes your selected keywords. Keywords can be singular words or phrases and can contain symbols like @ and #. Separate keywords/phrases with a comma.

Exclude Keywords - Excludes mentions that contain these keywords. This is useful for preventing irrelevant content from entering your monitor.

Social Profiles - Limit mentions being pulled in to specific social profiles. Make sure to first select the Social Network form the drop-down list that the social profile belongs to.

Languages - Filter which Languages are pulled in to a monitor. If no language is selected the monitor will pull in mentions that match your rules using all languages by default.

Networks - Limit your monitor to pull data from specific social media networks. If no network is selected, your monitor will pull information from all the networks by default.

Locations - Limit posts to specific Countries/States/Provinces by using the drop-down menu. Note: Only about 25% of users have location services enabled. This rule will only pull in mentions from users that have location services enabled.

    3. Settings

Settings further enables a user to control what type of mentions are pulled into a monitor.

Advanced Matching-Enables a user to greater control what information is pulled into a monitor. Additional settings include:

Ignore Shared Posts - Enables the monitor to disregard any re-shares and only pull in original mentions.

Only Track Verified Accounts - Verified accounts have the little blue check mark. (This only applies to Twitter)

Only Track Posts with Media - Only allow posts with videos, pictures, etc.

Include Comments with Matching Posts - Includes comments from the following social media networks: Reddit, Facebook, Youtube, and Twitter.

    Sentiment Category:

Sentiment Category - Allows one to choose a category that provides a different language set for sentiment in the monitor based on the industry chosen. The different options are:

    Default

    Airlines

    Ecommerce

    Health Care

    Hotels

    Restaurants

    Work Place

    4. Collections

Collections allows a user to edit which collection(s) a monitor is contained in.

    5. Save Your Monitor

Before a monitor is saved, be sure to check the Monitor Preview for an estimated volume of mentions. If your company has a limit of 300,000 mentions, and your preview says 1,000,000 mentions a month, you may want to add some more exclusion keywords or add additional rules to help lower the estimate of the mentions to be used.

In the event that a monitor needs its rules changed, one can edit the rules by clicking on the monitors tab, click the ellipsis(3 Dot) button, select edit monitor, and change the rules from that screen. For more information, click HERE.

Note: Monitors do not automatically pull in mentions retroactively. When a monitor is first created it is normal for there to be no data until a mention is pulled in. Depending on the estimated volume this could take some time. In order to pull old mentions, one can pull a Historical Job. Click for more information on Historical jobs.

  • Multiple Alerts is a new feature to the Nuvi Platform. It functions very similarly to the old alert system, but with some significant improvements. Including:

The ability to set multiple alerts per monitor.

Create/edit email groups directly from the alerts page.

    Updated easy to Use interface

Any alerts created previous to this change are still active.

Note: Alerts will only be triggered by a mention that is pulled in to the monitor its created for. Meaning a mention would have to first be pulled into a monitor, then meet the requirements set for the alert.

    How To Set Up/Edit Alerts:

    1. Finding Alerts

Click on the monitors tab in the Nuvi app. Once there, click on the 3 dots button in the top right corner of any of your monitors and select Alerts.

    [email protected],

Clicking on Alerts will take you to this page. If you have any existing alerts, they will appear here. There are not currently any on this monitor, so we will need to click Add New Alert in order to create a new alert.

    2. Name and Set Rules for your alert.

Once you've named your alert, we can move onto setting the rules for the alert. Alert triggers include:

    Volume Change %

    % Increase in positive mentions

    % Decrease in positive mentions

    % Increase in negative mentions

    % Decrease in negative mentions

Positive sentiment is % more than negative

Negative sentiment is % more than positive.

A social profile with an influencer score of # or higher posts a mention in this monitor

Every mention that matches the monitor rules

    Specific keywords

    Specific authors

    Specific Usernames

Keep in mind that each rule you select is an OR rule. Meaning if you choose the keyword Jet Plane, as a rule, and also choose Increase in Volume, you will receive separate alert notifications from each of those rules.

Any Volume or percentage alerts are sent when your current average is greater/lesser then the last hour.

In order to activate a rule, click on the slide button and fill in the value you're looking for.

    3. Set Alert Options

You have the ability to not receive alerts between certain hours of the day. You can also ignore mentions older than the chosen amount of days to eliminate alerts for past mentions.

    4. Enter Recipients

Nuvi alerts can be sent via email, Slack, or SMS.

Select which group of people you would like to receive notifications, or by click + Add New Group which will allow you to create a new group. There is some additional set up required for Slack alerts, so click Here for more information on how to set that up.

Once your recipients are configured, scroll back up to the top of the page and click the Save button. Once the alert is saved you should start receiving emails/SMS/Slack messages immediately. Here is an example of an Email alert.

Feel free to reach out to if you have any questions.

  • Yelp reviews are now included in your Nuvi Monitor. Currently there is nothing you need to do to add this feature, your monitor will automatically search your keywords across Yelp as part of the normal data pull.

You will see Yelp reviews categorized into the "Product Reviews" network on the Nuvi system. You can access this by choosing the Trending Networks option in the Trends area of your monitor.

Each user can also use the query language on the Search option to pull just Yelp reviews by typing this syntax into the search "original_network: yelp". You can then create a segment on just Yelp mentions if you would like.

    Additional Information:

Yelp only gives us 160 characters, so you may have to click into the actual review to see everything.

With product reviews you may have to select a Last 7 Days time range to see any data. Its unlikely that we will show any data in the Last 24 Hours timeframe.

Product Reviews do not pull in real-time.

If you would like to exclude Yelp from your monitors you can do so by adding an exclusion rule to your monitors.

  • In this article we'll go over the functionality of the toggle mentions feed. The feed is another way to view the mentions being pulled into your monitor, mass delete mentions, and otherwise interact with your data.

In order to find this button, hop into any of monitor, the Toggle Mentions feed button is located in the top right corner of the Nuvi app.

    https://help.nuvi.com/hc/en-us/articles/360001579272-Useful-Free-Form-Queries

The mentions feed is normally a partial view, but you can change it to full screen mode by clicking on the diagonal arrows button below the toggle mentions feed button. The most functionality is available in full screen mode.

Functions of the Toggle Mentions Feed:Mass Delete Mentions:

In the event that a monitor pulls in irrelevant mentions this is the quickest way to delete them.

The mentions can be deleted by, clicking the Edit Posts button, selecting the posts needing to be deleted, and clicking on the red trash can button. In the example below I created a monitor for Sabaton's new single Bismarck. The monitor pulled in mentions about Bismarck ND. By searching North Dakota in the search bar, I isolated the mentions and used the mass delete function to delete them.

    Change Sentiment of Mentions:

A Nuvi user also has the ability to change the sentiment of mentions via the mentions feed. In the example below a specific tweet was marked as Negative. However, the mention was talking about a Thanos event which should've had a neutral sentiment. Using the search bar and the change sentiment option I cleared out a lot of negative mentions.

    Interact with Tweets:

This option is available in most other views as well, but the mentions feed provides a clear cut environment to work with.

By using the search bar query sentiment_category:positive only positive sentiment mentions should be populated. On each mention there is an option to like, retweet, quote, comment, follow, tag, note, and email. These options can be extremely convenient for engaging with customers and for damage control in negative situations.

Here is a link to useful search bar queries:

Note: One can also delete or change the sentiment of single mentions by clicking on the 3 blue dot button in the bottom right of each mention. The Mark author as spam will prevent future mentions from specific authors from being pulled into the monitor.

  • How to Run a Historical Job

    Watch a tutorial video here.

Historical Jobs are the are the only way to retroactively pull data in Nuvi. When in a monitor, click on the 3 dot icon to pull up monitor options and select Historical Jobs. Please note that users can only pull historical data from Twitter.

From the Historical job page, users can adjust the date range and then request an estimate of how many mentions it will pull. Up to 1 year of data can be pulled at a time. Please note, it will bill the account for the mention amount used so if the estimate is a large number, consider adjusting the date range or changing the monitor rules.

After requesting the data, an open request will be visible with the progress of pulling in data. Depending on the number of mentions, it will take a while to process the request. With the recent changes to the historical process you may see two historical jobs start, one for 30 days, the other for the rest of your selected timeframe. This change was made to improve the efficiently of historical jobs and to help with data gathering times.

Once the request is finished, it will show up under completed requests and the user can view the data in the overview. You can also view the data by changing the date range on your monitor to any timeframe included in the historical job pulls.

  • Our Dev team has put out a fix for Facebook publishing. In this article we'll go through the steps on how to get this set up. As a warning, doing this will delete any publishing history and scheduled posts for Facebook. It will not delete these posts from Facebook itself, but you will no longer be able to find them in the Nuvi app. Unfortunately there is no way around this. We are still planning on retiring Nuvi publishing around June in favor of our new GroundSpark publishing tool. Feel free to ask your account manager for more information on GroundSpark and how you can schedule a demo.

    Step 1.

In the Nuvi app click on your profile in the top right corner of the screen. Select "Social Profiles". Next click on the Facebook tab.

Step 2. Click the red trashcan icon by your social profile.

Step 3. Click "Delete this Profile"

Step 4. Click the green "+Add Profile" button. Make sure you're currently logged into the Facebook profile you would like to add.

    Step 5. Click continue.

Step 6. Select which pages you would like to add into the Nuvi app.

Step 7. Enable Nuvi to manage your pages and publish to the pages you manage.

    Step 8. Click Ok

Step 9. After the page loads you should be back to your social profiles. Click on the Facebook tab and make sure all your profiles/page are there.

You should be good to go from here. I would suggest going to the Publishing tab and setting up a test post to make sure it works.

Please feel free to reach out to your account manager if you have any questions or concerns.

  • This article will walk you through how to create monitor templates. Templates can be very helpful when creating new monitors or new rule sets within a monitor. They help streamline the process by giving you a quick easy way to create rules that need to be more mass produced/added to every rule group. For example choosing which languages you want your monitor to pull in, copying specific keywords, etc. The template is company wide so you can use the same template across all your monitors.

There are two main methods you can use to create monitor rule templates.

    Method 1:

1.Click on the Settings tab in the top right of your Nuvi App.

    2. Click on the company that the rule template will be for.

    3. Select Rule Templates

    4. From this page you can create new templates by clicking +New Template. You can also edit existing templates from this page.

    5. Name your Template and select what rule you want it to contain. The example below is specifically for English mentions. Click Save

    6. Go to your monitors and click create new monitor or edit monitor. Click Add Rule Group or click on any rule you want to add the template to. Follow step 3 from Method two.

    Method 2:

    Step 1:

Access your monitor rules by either selecting to create a new monitor or selecting edit monitor.

    Step 2:

Click on the 3 dots on any rule of your monitor that you would like to turn into a template and select Save Rule as Template.

A pop up will then ask you to name your Template. Click Save once everything looks good.

After you click on save your screen will go back to the rule you were working on within your monitor. Make sure to refresh your page.

    Step 3:

Click on the rule group you would like to add the template to. Click on the 3 dots button and select Add Rule Template.

Select the name of your template and click Add Rule Template.

Your template rule should now appear in your rule group.

You can now easily add this rule to any rule group on any of your monitors.

Note: Make sure you click on the first rule in a rule group when you want to add a template. The templated rule will be added as the last rule in the rule group.
