J. Steven Baughman — Partner at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison

Mr. J. Steven Baughman has been a Partner at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP since January 18, 2017. Mr. Baughman has been a Partner at Ropes & Gray LLP since August 2007. He has experience litigating intellectual property and complex technology-based commercial disputes in a wide range of industries. Mr. Baughman has served clients in a broad array of litigation and counseling settings, from trial- and appellate-level litigation to domestic and international arbitration. He also conducts patent reexaminations arising from infringement disputes. Steve's IP practice has included patent, trade secret, trademark and copyright disputes; patent reexaminations and prosecution matters before the United States Patent and Trademark Office; technology-focused contract and insurance disputes; litigation risk assessments; and media-related matters and claims of plagiarism. His representations have involved subject matter ranging from disk drives, satellites, cell phones and GPS receivers to financial services, business methods, medical devices and pharmaceuticals. Steve has also written and spoken on various IP-related topics, including, most recently, patent reexaminations and trans-border patent infringement issues. Mr. Baughman has been recognized as a leader in his field by IAM Patent 1000 and Law360. He has been counsel of record in more than 145 Covered Business Method, Inter Partes Review and Post-Grant Review proceedings, including more than 45 proceedings that have been fully adjudicated before the PTAB and in eight of the first nine Covered Business Method trials to be argued before the PTAB. He is a member of American Bar Association, District of Columbia Bar Association and New York State Bar Association. He holds a JD from Harvard Law School and a B.S.E. (Electrical Engineering), Tau Beta Pi from Princeton University.
