Executive Bio

Mr. Ivan A. Schlager is a Partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, L.L.P. Mr. Schlager is the leader of the firm's Public Policy Practice. He counsels clients and devises strategies for dealing with Congress, the Executive Branch and independent regulatory agencies. He has prepared corporate executives for congressional testimony and for appearances before federal regulators. Mr. Schlager represents a diverse group of clients ranging from communications, technology and Internet companies to manufacturing companies and major transportation companies. He has assisted in the development of legislative and regulatory strategies for America OnLine in its merger with Time Warner, Chris Craft Industries in the sale of its station group to News Corporation and USAIRWAYS in its merger with United Airlines. He also advised a major studio in connection with an FTC investigation. Prior to joining Skadden, Mr. Schlager served as the Democratic Chief Counsel and Staff Director to the United States Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, where he was responsible for supervising the professional staff of seven subcommittees as well as devising the Democrat's legislative strategy for the full Committee. He worked in a bipartisan fashion on the implementation of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, legislative proposals to enhance the deployment of broadband technology, anti-slamming legislation, Internet privacy and taxation, the WTO Telecommunications Agreement, NAFTA, WTO implementing legislation, trade legislation to improve the antidumping and countervailing duty statutes, extension of Fast Track, the Carribean Basin Initiative, reauthorization of the Federal Aviation Administration, aviation competition policy, reauthorization of the Federal Trade Commission, national tobacco policy and budget appropriations issues. Mr. Schlager speaks and writes frequently on public policy issues and is active in national Democratic politics. He holds a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center and a B.A. from Northwestern University.
