Soylent's Frequently Asked Questions page is a central hub where its customers can always go to with their most common questions. These are the 71 most popular questions Soylent receives.
All products are marked with either an expiration date (EXP month/year), best by date (BEST BY month/day/year) or manufacturing date (MFG month/year). Our warehouses practice a first in/first out product rotation, so shelf life of received products can vary depending on warehouse location and available stock. It is our policy that no consumer will receive product with less than a 2-month shelf-life. Please note these terms may not apply for Amazon orders.
The shelf life of Soylent products reflects the optimum nutrition they contain. A year after production, the vitamin blend begins to lose its potency. It is due to this loss in nutrition that we recommend consuming your Soylent before a year has passed.
If you notice that the flavor of your Soylent changes between packages, this is an indication that the product is beyond its shelf life and should be disposed of.
How to store your Soylent
We recommend storing Soylent in a cool, dry place:
Prepared Soylent Powder must be refrigerated (40 degrees Fahrenheit or below) and consumed within 48 hours.
Opened bottles of Soylent Drink and Coffiest must be kept refrigerated (40 degrees Fahrenheit or below) and consumed within 72 hours.
Opened Soylent Bars should be repackaged in a sealed container and stored dry.

Letter from the C.E.O.
Dear Canadian Soylent customers,
Since June 2015, Soylent has been proud to sell and locally distribute our products in Canada. We are fortunate to have so many loyal customers who have supported our brand and community, even before we were officially available in the market. Its been quite the journey weve taken together through some proud successes and startup growing pains, and today I need to share an unfortunate situation impacting our Canadian business.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) recently informed us that our products do not meet a select few of the CFIA requirements for a meal replacement. Although we feel strongly that these requirements do not reflect the current understanding of human nutritional needs, we respect the CFIAs regulations and will fully comply with any regulatory action they deem appropriate. Unfortunately, this means we are unable to ship any additional product to our Canadian warehouses or sell Soylent to our Canadian customers until this is resolved. I want to reiterate that we are absolutely committed to working with Health Canada and the CFIA to resolve this as quickly as possible, but wedon'thave enough information at this time to share any timing. In order to keep all of you fully up to speed on our progress, we will be sending out regular updates. In the meantime, we have posted a detailed FAQ to share all the information we have at our disposal. We sincerely apologize for this product disruption, and we hope to be back selling in our favorite country to the North soon. We want to hear from you, so please feel free to contact us anytime with questions, concerns and suggestions at [email protected]. Thank you for your continued support. - Rob RhinehartFounder & CEO, Rosa Foods, Inc.

We immediately worked with Canadian regulators to find a way to continue distributing Soylent in Canada. Unfortunately, it became clear that this effort would not be successful in the short term, and we notified our customers as soon as we learned that an interruption in Soylent availability was inevitable.
When do you anticipate resuming shipments to Canada? Were working to get Soylent back into Canada as quickly as possible. We have no firm timelines yet, but will be posting regular updates to this page. We understand that our products have become essential in many customers lives, and sincerely apologize for this interruption.

View ArticleQuantity of L-theanine included in one bottle of Coffiest: 75 mg
When L-theanine is combined with caffeine it enhances concentration and improves reaction times while producing a calming effect.
How it works in the body
First isolated in 1950, L-theanine is an amino acid found in the leaves of the tea plant (camellia sinensis) which has been shown to temporarily enhance concentration and improve reaction time in users. Although theanine has a negligible effect when consumed on its own, it shares space in the tea leaf with caffeine, the presence of which amplifies theanines cognition-boosting properties. In addition, theanine seems to have a calming effect which may help mitigate the less desirable side effects of caffeine consumption.
Theanine, as an analog of glutamate, can be converted into the latter in the liver or intestine. Theanine can bypass digestion and enter the brain directly, where its structural similarity allows it to bind with and act on glutamate receptors.
L-theanine is the more frequently occurring of the theanine molecules two forms and as such its properties have been more thoroughly researched. Only L-theanine is produced by tea plants, but its mirror-image version D-theanine can be synthesized as well. Although D-theanine is also in use as a theanine supplement, it has been the subject of far less study and its effects may differ from those of L-theanine.

View ArticleVitamin B12 supports a variety of critical systems in the body, including red blood cell production, DNA synthesis and neurological function. [1][2] The version of vitamin B12 we use in Soylent is Cyanocobalamin, a synthetic form of vitamin B12.
How it works in the body
When Vitamin B12 is ingested, salivary glands secrete haptocorrin (also known as transcobalamin-1), which bonds to cyanocobalamin to protect it and prevent it from being broken down before it can be absorbed in the ileum (part of the small intestine).
After passing through the stomach, the haptocorrin-B12 complex reaches the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine. In the duodenum, haptocorrin is separated from cyanocobalamin and a transport protein called the Intrinsic Factor attaches to cyanocobalamin. The compound then continues its journey through the small intestine, eventually reaching the ileum, where it is absorbed. Without the attached intrinsic factor, B12 cannot be absorbed in the small intestine.[3]

View ArticleVitamin A plays a role in the immune system by protecting cells from free radicals, but its most critical function is supporting eyesight.
How it works in the body
Rod cells, a type of photoreceptor cell in the eye, utilize a protein called rhodopsin to detect light. Rhodopsin[2] is itself composed of the protein opsin coupled with a derivative of vitamin A known as an 11-cis-retinal.[3] When rhodopsin absorbs light, the 11-cis-retinal molecule is transformed to a different type of retinoid, known as all-trans-retinal. The transformation triggers the signaling of visual neuron cells, which transmit the corresponding visual stimulus to the brain.[4]
Vitamin A plays roles in a variety of other processes in the body, including immune function, apoptosis (apoptosis is a programmed removal of unneeded cells) and cell-to-cell communication. Vitamin A's primary connection to these various processes lies in its ability to regulate which genetic instructions (which parts of a cell's DNA) are acted upon by the cell.[5],[6]
Vitamin A compounds are absorbed in the small intestine and transported, like other fat-soluble vitamins, to the liver where 80 percent of vitamin A is found.[7]

View ArticleCarbohydrates are the fuel that powers a vast number of systems in the body. In science, the term carbohydrate refers to a class of molecules composed of individual carbon rings with attached hydroxyl groups. As the world's most abundant biomolecule,[1] carbohydrates are one of the body's primary sources of fuel.
Carbohydrates are divided into two broad categories. The first is the simple carbohydrate, which includes both monosaccharides and disaccharides.
Simple Carbohydrates
The fundamental component of all carbohydrates is the monosaccharide, a class of sugars that cannot be broken down into simpler sugars.
Glucose and fructose are common monosaccharides and have rings composed of six carbon atoms.[3] Even though the two compounds share a molecular composition (C6H12O6), the different orientations in which the two molecules are structured affect how the molecules interact with the body.[4] Think of these two sugars as house keys. They may be made of the exact same type of metal, but unless the shapes of the keys are identical, they will not fit the same lock.
A disaccharide is a molecule formed when two monosaccharides are joined together. Sucrose, the compound that the FDA defines as table sugar,[5] is a common disaccharide.
Soylent contains three disaccharides:
Isomaltulose
Trehalose
A small amount of sucralose
Even though they are in the same carbohydrate subfamily, due to their unique shapes, the ways in which isomaltulose, trehalose, and sucralose interact with the body are completely different. On nutrition labels, the FDA requires that all disaccharides be labeled as sugars despite the different ways that the disaccharides function.[6]
In Soylent, a very small amount of sucralose is used to mask the flavor of the vitamin blend. Due to its shape, sucralose cannot be broken down by humans. For more information on sucralose, visit this page.
Isomaltulose, which is composed of a glucose molecule bonded to a fructose molecule, is broken down and digested by the body.
In addition to isomaltulose, Soylent contains trehalose. Trehalose is an extremely stable disaccharide that isn't reduced by hydrolysis and can't be broken down by alpha glucosidase, an enzyme involved in the breakdown of many carbohydrates. The trehalose used in Soylent is produced industrially, but the compound is also found naturally in some types of honey, fungi, and certain insects.[9]
The inclusion of isomaltulose and trehalose within the total blend of carbohydrates in Soylent is designed to provide an even energy release.
Complex Carbohydrates
Complex carbohydrates, which are also known as polysaccharides, are divided into two groups - storage polysaccharides and structural polysaccharides.
On food labeling, the term carbohydrate refers to storage polysaccharides. Historically, these are provided via whole-grain breads, starches, and other grain-derived products.
Storage polysaccharides are important because they are the source of medium to long-term energy. Subsequently, storage polysaccharides have an overall lower glycemic index, which is a measurement of the rate at which the body breaks them down into glucose.
From a human nutrition standpoint, the key difference between a structural polysaccharide[11] and a storage polysaccharide[12] is that the bond geometry of a structural polysaccharide is not in a shape which can be broken down by the human digestive system.[13]
Which Polysaccharides, if any, are in Soylent products?
Energy Production
Humans derive nearly all energy from carbohydrates, fatty acids and to a lesser extent protein.[14], [15],[16]
The process by which the body extracts energy from carbohydrates is very complex, but on a fundamental level, energy is collected by pulling hydrogen atoms off monosaccharides' carbon rings. Hydrogen atoms have a single valence electron, a minute electrical charge, which is stored in a battery-like compound known as adenosine triphosphate.
The collective electric charges of quadrillions of ATP molecules provide the energy which powers the roughly 37 trillion cells in the body.[17]
Soylent serves as an entire meal that includes this very important balance of energy. Many diets try to cut out carbohydrates completely, which is dangerous as they are vital to so many systems in the body.

View ArticleSoy protein isolate was chosen due to its bioavailability, meaning that it is easily absorbed by the digestive system. Using a protein digestibility-corrected amino acid score ( PDCAAS ), which gauges how well certain proteins can be digested, soy protein isolate was found to be the best with a score of 1.0. Additionally, soy protein isolate has a smooth, consistent texture which creates the optimal flavor profile. During our testing, we found that alternative proteins lacked both of these benefits.
Why is soy protein isolate the right choice?
Whey, casein and egg white - All three of these have a PDCAAS score equal to soy protein isolate but have other drawbacks. These options are derived from animal products, so they inherently use more resources to be produced than plant based proteins.
Hemp - Hemp has a PDCAAS score of 0.46, meaning it is less bioavailable than soy. It also has a rough texture and odd taste.
Pea - Similar to hemp, pea protein has a lower PDCAAS score of 0.69. It also has a strong flavor and is often gritty, slimy and unpleasant to drink.
Rice - Rice has a PDCAAS score of 0.47 and has a rough, silty, occasionally sandy feel due to the brown rice protein. The other major downside is the amount of heavy metals that rice naturally picks up from the ground. Lead, arsenic, cadmium and others were a major concern for a food that is designed to act as a daily meal.
Allergies
A very small population is allergic to the different types of protein available on the market today, including soy protein isolate. We recommend that you check with a doctor to make sure you are not allergic to soy before making Soylent a daily choice.
We also want to remind all of our customers that our community has a massive DIY movement behind it. They are constantly playing around with the formula to adapt it for their individual needs.
Does soy protein isolate cause hormonal issues?
All hormonal issues related to soy protein isolate have been based off clinical trials and meta-studies with results that are inconsistent at best. A simple search will pull up studies that show positive and negative results. The problem is science is an iterative process, meaning it takes many passes and studies to confirm something as fact. If you are worried about having a reaction to soy protein isolate, look through your family medical history to see if there is any sensitivity or consult your doctor.
We encourage our users to keep evaluating our products and suggesting alternatives.
View ArticleSoy protein isolate is the main source of protein in all our products. We found that soy protein isolate produced the smoothest texture while still being a sustainable protein source that doesnt strain the environment.

Simple carbohydrates- These are fast acting and give quick boosts of energy.
Complex carbohydrates- These are harder to burn and last longer.
You need a mixture of these two types of carbohydrates to achieve a healthy diet. Consuming too much of either one will result in a rush then crash or feeling sluggish. Powder has a mixture of both to give you the energy needed in a daily diet.

View ArticleNo ingredient in Soylent Powder, Drink, or Coffiest naturally contains gluten. Since none of these products contain oat flour, the likelihood of cross-contamination is very low.
The only chance of cross-contamination comes with our Soylent Bar, as it contains oat protein. Throughout the entire sourcing and production process, oats have numerous opportunities to come into contact with surfaces that have also come into contact with wheat, barley or rye.
Additionally, avenin, the storage protein found in oats, poses additional challenges. Due to the similarities between the amino acid sequences of avenin and gluten, avenin can sometimes cause gluten-like immune responses for people with Celiac Disease.
The Celiac Support Association website hosts one study and links to several others on oats and Celiac Disease:

View ArticleSoylent was created to provide all the nutrition you need from a healthy meal in an easy-to-use format. You can enjoy our full line of food products as a full meal or a snack between your meals, its entirely up to you. If you want to make Soylent a food source in your weekly diet you should ease into it. We suggest starting the use of Soylent products with a single meal per week then increasing you intake in subsequent weeks. This will allow your body to adjust to this new food source. Once you are acclimated to Soylent, you can customize your intake to your liking.
View ArticleThere is no right or wrong amount of Soylent to eat. Everyone has different needs in their diet, so we created Soylent to be modular. The serving sizes for each of our products is meant to be a point of reference on which to build a nutritional balance that works for you. The average adult requires 2,000 calories per day. Reaching this caloric goal using Soylent would require the following:
Not everyone needs 2,000 calories a day. The nutritional needs of an individual vary based on size, age, and activity levels. We recommend that you start off with smaller quantities of Soylent and increase your intake over time untilyou'vefound the amount that works for you.
How do I measure out a meal of Powder?
An exact measurement for each meal of Powder weighs 87 g, which equals one serving of formula 1.8. The scoop is a close approximation of the 87g serving amount.
View ArticleWe take our name from the novel Make Room! Make Room! by Harry Harrison. The book explores the impact of overpopulation in a world with dwindling resources, so a new food is created that is called Soylent, which is made of soy and lentils.
Soylent productsdon'tactually contain the whole soybean, but rather use the protein isolate and lecithin that is derived from soy. These two elements were chosen because they are both sustainable and allow anyone who follows a specific diet to enjoy our product without having to worry.
View ArticleSoylent is a complete meal that is enjoyable to eat and contains the vitamins and nutrients your body needs. We created Soylent to be healthy, easy and affordable:
Healthy:Soylent has plant based protein, carbohydrates, fats, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. It has all the elements of a healthy diet without excess sugars, saturated fats, or cholesterol.
Easy: Soylent comes in Drink and Powder. You either twist it open or mix it in water to enjoy a completely nutritious meal. Its that simple.
Affordable: Soylent is about $3 per meal.
Soylent provides the body with everything it needs in a meal.
View ArticleThe nutritional value of a meal, regardless of whether it is prepared in a factory, restaurant, or backyard barbecue, is a direct product of the variety of nutrients that it provides within a persons diet.
A box of instant macaroni could be unhealthy because it contains low levels of important vitamins and minerals while containing excess amounts of salt, cholesterol, and saturated fat. The macaroni is not inherently unhealthy because it was manufactured in a factory, its unhealthy because it lacks vital nutrients that the body needs.
What makes Soylent different from other processed foods is that it was engineered from the ground-up to be nutritionally-complete. It is also one of the first major products to combine the convenience of a prepackaged meal with the nutritional balance of a diet complete in vitamins, minerals, and essential nutrients.
View ArticleGenetically modified organisms (GMOs) can be a safe and economic option for food production. The benefits of GMOs currently on the market outweigh the potential hazards they can create. These crops can provide nutritious, sustainable and efficient yields that will help in maximizing the land in which they are grown.
A main concern with GMOs is that modifying the genetic structure (DNA) of a plant can produce foreign compounds not normally found in the organism, changing a good plant into a dangerous plant. Altering the genes of plantsisn'tanything new, humans have been modifying food for as long as they have been farming through the process called selective breeding.
A potato farmer uses selective breeding to create a new strain of potato. This involves placing the pollen of one potato plant onto the stigma of a different potato plant. After the resulting strain is grown, the potato farmer hopes that this new crop has the traits they wanted to achieve. If not, then they start over again.
GMOs eliminate the guessing game that comes with selective breeding by allowing us to choose the traits we want from the food were growing. This cuts down on food waste, time spent growing food, and the resources needed to grow the food in the first place. This means GMO crops are more sustainable and reliable than those that are traditionally grown.
View ArticleWhen created Soylent we took an empirical approach when it came to its construction. What this means is that everything weve done has been consistently based on findings by the scientific community. We made sure that the Soylent formula adhered to the recommendations from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM).
Our goal is to engineer nutritionally-complete food products that are optimized for modern consumers lifestyles and budgets. Above all, we want to make healthy nutrition easily attainable.
To achieve this goal, we have stringently screened and analyzed everything that goes into our products. We isolate specific ingredients from multiple sources and combine them in our products.
Every flavor, formula type, and vitamin is tested to ensure that our customers are getting the most out of our food.
View ArticleSoylents nutritional makeup is complex and comprehensive. It contains all the elements of a healthy diet while limiting the amounts of less desirable components such as sugars, saturated fats, and cholesterol.
The Soylent recipe is based on recommendations from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and is regulated as a food and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Dr. F. Xavier Pi-Sunyer, M.D., MPH, serves as Soylents nutritional advisor and oversaw its development. Pi-Sunyer is professor of medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. SOYLENT ISSUES ALLERGY ALERT ON POTENTIAL UNDECLARED MILK IN SOYLENT 1.8 POWDER
Soylent, Los Angeles, CA is voluntarily recalling 890 boxes of Soylent 1.8 Powder, because it may contain undeclared milk. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.
It has recently come to our attention that a small amount of whey powder may have been incorporated into one production lot of Soylent 1.8 powder during manufacturing at our third party facility. As a precautionary measure we have halted shipments of Soylent 1.8 powder (SKU: 1WK-V108) with Lot #: G7076PA, Expiration / Best Buy date: 02/2018. The lot information (G7076PA) is printed on the front of the pouch. We are advising our customers to immediately discard any remaining Soylent 1.8 powder in their possession from the lot referenced above.
Our shipping records indicate that we have shipped 890 boxes (containing 7 x 15oz pouches) of this lot to 610 customers. We have started shipping newer lots to customers and do not anticipate an interruption in supply at this time.
No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this issue, and this will not impact future shipments of Powder 1.8.
This voluntary recall is immediately being initiated after it was discovered that the milk-containing product was handled adjacent to the production lines for Soylent 1.8 powder. Subsequent investigation indicated that the potential cross-contact was caused by a temporary breakdown in our 3rd party manufacturers production and packaging processes.
As a customer who has purchased this lot (Lot #: G7076PA, Expiration / Best Buy date: 02/2018) of Soylent 1.8 powder, we are offering a full refund or replacement. You may request a refund/replacement at [email protected].
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. As you know, transparency is one of our core values and your health and well-being is our number one priority. If you have any questions or comments please do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected].
We thank you for your understanding and support.

National Institute of Health Recommended Dietary Allowance:400 to 420 mg daily for males 19 years and older. 310 to 320 mg daily for non-pregnant females 19 years and older. [1]
Quantity in body:Approximately 24 grams. The majority (50 to 60 percent) of magnesium in the body is stored in bones. The remaining quantity of magnesium is found in soft tissue (non-organ and non-bone tissue). Less than 1 percent of the magnesium in the body is in the blood. [2]
Nutrition role:Magnesium is a cofactor (an inorganic compound which activates an enzyme) in hundreds of enzymatic processes in the body. [3] These processes are involved in muscle function, blood glucose control, Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP, a cell's primary source of energy) production and many others. In one such process, protein synthesis, magnesium plays essential roles in 3 of the 5 major stages of protein production. [4] Magnesium's involvement in many metabolic pathways is largely related to its ability to neutralize anion (negative) charges in a compound. [5]
Normally, only 30 to 50 percent of ingested magnesium is absorbed by the body. [6] However, absorption rates can increase or decrease depending on the levels of magnesium already in the body. The Institute of Health's recommended dietary allowance takes into account the magnesium's absorption rates.
Absorption can be affected by the presence of other compounds. Phytic acid, a component of several types of dietary fiber, can decrease magnesium absorption because magnesium may bind to the acid's phosphate compounds, preventing them from being diffused through epithelial cells. [7]
Reason this form chosen:MgO is a stable form of Mg2+and has the most neutral flavor profile. Magnesium citrate was evaluated as well, but resulted in a strongly unpleasant flavor.
Production details:The magnesium oxide in the vitamin blend is produced by DSM Fortitech.
