View ArticleWhat is GPS?
GPS stands for Global Positioning System. It is a space-based, satellite navigation system, owned and operated by the United States of America, which provides users with positioning, navigation, and timing services. The system consists of three segments: the space segment, the control segment, and the user segment. The space and control segments are directly operated, maintained, and developed by the US Air Force (USAF) on behalf of the Department of Defense.
Space Segment The space segment is made up of a constellation of at least 24 satellites that constantly transmit one-way signals, providing the position of each satellite and the time. Currently, there are more than 30 operational satellites, with a few decommissioned satellites held in reserve.
Control Segment The control segment is a world-wide network of monitor and control stations that maintains the satellites in their proper orbits. It also tracks the GPS satellites, uploads data and software updates, and maintains the health and status of the entire constellation. The operational hub of this network is at Schriever Air Force Base east of Colorado Springs.
User Segment The user segment of the system is your GPS receiver, which receives GPS signals and uses the received information to calculate its position and the time.
A Brief History
The United States Department of Defense (DoD) started developing GPS in 1973, for military use. Although the USAF began launching GPS satellites in 1978, the GPS receivers of the day were too bulky and heavy for a person to carry. Portable military GPS receivers called Manpacks appeared in 1988. These backpack-mounted receivers weighed 17 pounds and cost about $45,000 each. Civilian access to GPS began as early as 1983, primarily with GPS receivers that had to be transported in vehicles. Over time, the receivers became smaller and cheaper. The first commercially available, handheld GPS receiver was introduced in 1989. Although GPS was originally developed for the US military, it became a national resource and openly available to the public in 1996 when President Clinton required the DoD to turn off a feature that limited positional accuracy for public use. Today, GPS receivers are highly miniaturized and inexpensive, often found as microchips in everyday devices such as cell phones, automobiles, and laptops.
How GPS Works
GPS satellites continuously broadcast radio signals toward the Earth. Your GPS receiver "listens" for these signals and uses the information from four or more satellites to determine its own location. The GPS satellites orbit the Earth twice a day. The orbital paths of all the satellites ensure that at least five satellites are visible from any point on the globe at any time. The signal from each satellite contains data indicating its location and the current time. Each satellite contains a very precise atomic clock in order to provide accurate timing data.
With the signals from the satellites, your GPS receiver uses four-dimensional trilateration to calculate its own position in three dimensions and the correct time. To do this, your GPS receiver needs to know:
The distance between it and each satellite
The location of each satellite
Distance
To determine the distance to a satellite, the GPS receiver multiplies the amount of time it took the signal to arrive by its speed. A repeating digital code, called the pseudo-random code, in every satellites radio signal allows the GPS receiver to figure out when a portion of the signal left the satellite. The codes are unique to each satellite. Although radio signals travel at the speed of light in a vacuum, there is a miniscule reduction in speed due to propagation in the Earths atmosphere. Using atmospheric correction data, your GPS receiver knows the speed of the signal.
Location
Your GPS receiver knows the positions of every GPS satellite in the sky because it acquires almanac and ephemeris data from the satellites:
Almanac data provides coarse orbit and status information about all the satellites in the constellation. Every GPS satellite transmits the same almanac.
Ephemeris, or orbital position data, is a table of values that gives the exact position of a satellite in the sky at a specific time. Each satellite transmits its own ephemeris as a set of coefficients for published equations.
GPS Accuracy
GPS receivers are very accurate and can find a location as close as 10 feet. However, there are some conditions that can lead to inaccuracy:
Geometry The geometry of satellites refers to where the satellites are located, relative to each other and your GPS receiver. If all the located satellites are in the same area, the receivers calculated position may be slightly off. However, if all four satellites are in North, South, East, and West locations, then the calculated position will be very accurate.
Blockage/Urban Canyon Blockage occurs when a GPS signal is blocked in a vehicle or in a parking garage. Buildings and mountainous terrain can also block the satellites reception. GPS can be inaccurate when you are in an urban setting with many tall buildings, also known as an urban canyon. Dense foliage, such as in a forest with heavy tree cover, can block GPS signals. It is also difficult to use GPS from inside a building because the materials used in its construction may block or degrade GPS signals.
Multipath Multipath occurs when a radio signal reflects off an object and travels further than intended. This confusion of signals due to reflection could make GPS position inaccurate.
Weather Clouds, fog, rain, and snow do not noticeably degrade GPS signals. GPS was designed for the military as an all-weather navigation system, and it is used to guide aircraft and ocean-going vessels through bad weather and zero-visibility conditions. A common, weather-related issue that does affect the accuracy of a GPS receiver is poor weather-sealing that allows moisture and other contaminants to come in contact with wires and electronic components. It is also possible for a layer of water or ice covering the antenna to affect GPS signal reception.
Telenav and GPS
Telenav has created applications that utilize GPS technology to provide a variety of useful features for both personal and business purposes. When you make a request for directions or information based on Location Based Services (LBS), the signal goes from your handset through a cell phone tower to the Telenav servers. Telenav immediately pulls up relevant information and sends it back through the cell phone towers to your handset, delivering voice- and on-screen driving directions, maps, and business data. Telenav uses LBS for cell phone apps, in-car navigation and delivers this information with real-time GPS location, all to make life easier for customers. We encourage you to take a tour through our web page at www.telenav.com to see what Telenav and GPS can do for you.

ISSUE:
Scout GPS Link is running in the background after you exit the app and it is draining your battery.
SOLUTION:
There is a built-in feature of Androidthat lets you close any non-essential appsthat do not fully close on their own when you exit them.
3rd-party developers routinely take advantage of this Android feature toreduce the amount of internal memory their app needs.
These stepsassume that your Android phone has Google's reference specification user interface (UI) for Android. If your Android phone has a customized UI, please refer to your phone owner's manual to find out what the differences are.
On your Android home screen, tap the OVERVIEW button (in Google'sUI design, this is an outline of a square in the bottom right of the home screen).
A series of app previews will appear. These are all the apps that arepausedor that are actually running in the background. You may also find multiple instances of an app. For example, the Google Chrome web browser app will open more than one instance (think of this as a temporary copy) of itself whenever you visit a different web page and you have not closed your previous browsing session.
Swipe up or down through the app previews to find the Scout GPS Link app preview. Do not tap any app preview. Tapping an app preview now will simply bring that app back to the foreground.
When you find the app preview for Scout GPS Link, swipe it to the left or right to close the app.

View ArticleISSUE:
After updating your Android smartphone to Android 10 (aka Android Q), the Scout GPS Link app stops working with the Toyota Entune 3.0 Audio or Toyota Entune 3.0 Audio Plus infotainment system of your Toyota vehicle.
This does not affect Toyota vehicles that come equipped with the previous generation of Toyota Entune Audio Plus infotainment system.
SOLUTION:
Launch the Toyota Entune 3.0 App Suite Connect app and allow it to stay running when you turn your vehicle on and wish to use the Scout GPS Link app from your vehicle's dashboard screen.
Currently, you should also change an app setting of the Toyota Entune 3.0 App Suite Connect app on your Android 10 phone. This is a setting called "DISPLAY OVER OTHER APPS." The following steps are for a typical Android smartphone, powered by Android 10, that has Google's official UI:
On your Android 10 phone, go to device SETTINGS >> APPS & NOTIFICATIONS >> SEE ALL APPS >> TOYOTA ENTUNE (aka Toyota Entune 3.0).
Scroll down the page to ADVANCED and then tap "DISPLAY OVER OTHER APPS."
In the Settings page for "Display Over Other Apps," tap the slider for "Allow display over other apps." This will cause the slider to turn from white (off) to blue (on) and enables the setting. If it is already enabled, tap it once to turn it off and then tap it again to turn it back on.
Tap the Back button as many times as needed to exit the device Settings menu.
Android 10 on Samsung Phones
Samsung's OneUI* overlay is not identical to Google's native UI for Android 10. Follow these steps to find and enable "Allow Permission."
Go to device SETTINGS >> APPS >> TOYOTA ENTUNE.
Scroll down to "Advanced" and tap"Appear on Top."
Tap the slider to enable "Allow Permission."
Tap the Back button as many times as needed to exit the device Settings.
*Starting with Android 9, Samsung's OneUI replaces the Samsung Experience and Samsung TouchWiz.
DETAILS:
The Toyota Entune 3.0 App Suite Connect app manages the two-way data connection for Scout GPS Link between your smartphone and your vehicle's Toyota Entune 3.0 Audio/Audio Plus infotainment system. Toyota Entune 3.0 App Suite Connect app also does this for any other Toyota Entune app that has extra features enabled by a USB connection.
If you own an Android smartphone that is powered byAndroid 10 (aka Android Q) it is even more important to always launch theToyota Entune 3.0 App Suite Connect app on your Android 10 phone before you launch Scout GPS Link.
This is required for a phone powered by Android 10 even if you only use Scout GPS Link in Bluetooth-only mode (TurnStream Mode).
Previously, this requirement only applied to customers who used the MapStream Mode of Scout GPS Link (overhead moving-map w/ audio navigation guidance and optional 3D nav view).
Android 10 changed the way in which apps are allowed to draw (run in the foreground) over other apps currently running on the phone. When the Toyota Entune 3.0 system is turned on and in use, it requires the Toyota Entune 3.0 App Suite Connect app to be accessible on the phone at all times.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
If this is your first time using Toyota Entune with a USB cable or trying to use the MapStream mode of Scout GPS Link, please make sure to use an OEM USB cable, such as the one that came with your smartphone or a cable produced by the phone maker. You should also be able to use good quality aftermarket USB cable that is officially certified by the USB-IF (USB Implementor's Forum is the organization that regulates the USB standard and develops new features and specifications for this technology).
NOTE: Cheap or poor quality USB cables are often constructed with wires that are drawn from low-quality alloys or are too flimsy for their intended purpose. In other cases, parts and circuitry required by a revision of USB (For example, USB 2.0 or USB 3.0) are missing from un-certified cables.
If you are not certain which USB port in your model and year of Toyota is the right one to plug your phone into, the Toyota Customer Experience Center help you find this.

DETAILS
NOTE FOR OWNERS OF 2018 TOYOTA CAMRY & 2018 TOYOTA SIENNA
It is very important that you launch the Toyota Entune 3.0 App Suite app on your phone first before attempting to launch the Scout GPS Link mobile app.The Toyota Entune 3.0 App Suite app controls and facilitates communication of data between your phone and your vehicle's Toyota Entune Audio Plus multimedia system (also called the "head unit").
To get help for the Toyota Entune 3.0 App Suite app, please contact Toyota Entune support.
NOTE FOR iPHONES AND OTHER iOS DEVICES
If you have an iPhone (or iOS device w/ cell service) but haven't updated to iOS 11.3, please do so as soon as convenient. From iOS 11.2 to iOS 11.2.6, there are known issues that affect the ability of an iPhone or iOS device to connect through Bluetooth and USB.
Before You Begin
Quickly check that your phone has at least 50% charge remaining on its battery, that its cellular network reception is good (50% or better), and that Location is enabled and ready to provide GPS data.
Look at the in-dash screen of your multimedia system. If the Bluetooth https://www.toyota.ca/toyota/en/about/contact-us and Phone Receptionicons are missing or covered with a slash before you start Scout GPS Link, please consider contacting Toyota Entune support.
Step 1 -Launch the Scout GPS Link mobile app on your phone.
Set your phone aside for a moment after this step.
Do not launch the Scout GPS Link vehicle app on your head unit before this step.
Step 2 -Turn your vehicle on and connect your phone to the Toyota Entune Audio Plus head unit.
Always check the head unit screen. IfBluetooth and Phone Receptionare light grey OR if you see NoConnectionor No PhoneReception, try to power-cycle the multimedia system by turning your vehicle completely off for at least 30 seconds. If the status icons continue to indicate Bluetooth connection and cell phone reception issues, please contact Toyota Entune support.
Some users report that they can start Scout GPS Link while their vehicle is already running, but we prefer to launch the Scout GPS Link mobile app first.
Step 3 -Launch the Scout GPS Link vehicle app.Press the APPS button on the head unit, then find and select the "Scout" icon.
The Scout GPS Link vehicle app should now try to connect to the Scout GPS Link mobile app on your phone.
Always launch the Scout GPS Link vehicle app after the Scout GPS Link mobile app on your phone.
If all went well, then your phone will display the lock screen of Scout GPS Link and you should be able to use Scout GPS Link from your in-dash controls and screen.
If the Scout GPS Link vehicle app displays a connection error after you have followed the start-up procedure, please let us know by submitting a help request ticket or replying to your open ticket for connection and start-up issues. Please explain what happened when you performed each step.
If you experience issues with your Toyota Entune Audio Plus multimedia system OR the Toyota Entune app, please call the Toyota Customer Experience Center and ask for Toyota Entune technical support.

When you attempt to launch the Scout GPS Link head unit app, it will not open to its home screen on your head unit and one of the following error messages appears.
"Could not complete request. Please try again later." (Code 200.1.0)
"Could not complete request. Please try again later." (Code 200.2.0)
Possible Causes:
If the Scout GPS Link mobile phone app has not completed its first-time login process correctly and opened its home screen before you attempt to connect it to the Scout GPS Link head unit app, the head unit app might not be able to sync with the mobile phone app through the Bluetooth connection provided by your phone and your vehicles head unit.
The problem may also occur if certain program files or configuration data for the mobile app, stored on your phone, have somehow become corrupted.
Troubleshooting:
If you attempt the following troubleshooting steps and the problem continues, please sign in to your help center account and submit a new help request.
We ask that you perform this troubleshooting procedure while your vehicle is parked at home or work, or any location that puts your phone in range of a public WiFi network. If you feel you need hands-on assistance with this procedure, please schedule an appointment with your Toyota dealership or service center.
Before you begin these steps, verify the following:
Cellular voice/data signal is at least 50% or better.
WiFi is enabled and has a good connection to a nearby WiFi network.
Battery is at least 50% charged, but preferably fully charged.
Location/GPS is enabled and your phone can figure out where it is using its native location app. Please remember that all GPS receivers (from the most advanced units in aircraft and ships to the smallest available chipset in a wearable device) are subject to the same physical limitations - the receiver needs radio line-of-sight to 4 or more GPS satellites. Most solid materials, even heavy tree cover, block or degrade these radio signals, but clouds and bad weather should not be a problem.
Once the prerequisites are met as closely as possible, do the following:
Remove the Scout GPS Link mobile app from your mobile phone.
Sever Bluetooth (BT) pairing. Remove your vehicle from your phones BT device list and then remove your phone from your vehicles BT device list. Do not pair Bluetooth again until you reach Step 13.
Powerycle your phone and turn your vehicle off. Leave your vehicle turned off at this time. NOTE: Powercycling is important because it will help clear any temporary files, such as those opened to facilitate installation of an app, from your phone's system cache. If you are not sure how to do this, refer to your phone manufacturer for instructions on how to turn your phone completely off for 30 seconds and then turn it back on.
Once your phone is fully on and synced with your wireless carrier, install Scout GPS Link from the Apple iTunes Store or the Google Play Store. If you can do this while connected to WiFi network, it will help your phone download files with fewer errors and interruptions than those normally associated with cellular data service.
Please accept all permission requests from the Scout GPS Link mobile app. At the time of this writing, you should choose ALWAYS or ALWAYS ALLOW because the mobile app does not yet recognize permissions that only allow partial access when the app is running. Our developers are aware of this and working with Toyota Motor North America to become fully compliant with recent security features introduced by Apple and Google.
After the installation process is complete, launch Scout GPS Link on your phone. Do not turn your vehicle on yet.
The app will prompt you to connect to the vehicle or launch into mobile mode. Tap "Get started on mobile" to launch into mobile mode.
Tap "Log in" to use your existing Scout GPS Link account or tap "Continue without personalization." NOTE: If you had opted to continue without personalization the first time, please do so. Just keep in mind that features like Recents and Favorites/My Places are not backed-up on our servers when you choose this option.
After the Scout GPS Link mobile app finishes downloading audio content, map data, and other critical files, it should open to its home screen.
At this point, please try to search for a POI and start a test trip.
Once you have selected a route and the navigation session starts, end the trip.
Exit the Scout GPS Link mobile phone app. If you can still see its icon in your phones status bar, close the app using your phones built-in app switcher or app previewer. Apple and Google both provide detailed FAQs on how to do this without entering your phones Settings menu.
Turn your vehicle on.
Follow your phone and vehicle manufacturers instructions to establish Bluetooth pairing between your phone and your vehicle.
Once Bluetooth is paired, launch the Scout GPS Link mobile phone app. If mobile phone app prompts you to connect to the vehicle, please do so at this time.
(POSSIBLE EVENT) Your vehicle head unit may display a prompt instructing you to re-download the Scout GPS Link head unit app. Ensure that your phone still has a good WiFi connection and proceed. Afterward, move on to the next step.
On the vehicle head unit, press the physical APPS key.
On the head unit display, select Scout and launch it.
If this procedure is not successful, make a note of which step you were at and what happened. Update your help request ticket with those details and include any screenshots you may have captured.

Our application is only supported to work with either headsets or vehicle head units which are A2DP compliant. A2DP stands for Advanced Audio Distribution Profile, which is a Bluetooth profile that allows for the wireless transmission of stereo audio from an A2DP source (typically a phone or computer) to an A2DP receiver (a set of Bluetooth headphones or stereo system).
Scout audio navigation connecting to a BT Headset or vehicle head unit requires either the device or hardware BT to support A2DP (this means the unit must support this audio profile because its how the audio files are transmitted from our Scout app). Please review the user manual to the designated device if youre unsure whether your device is A2DP compliant.
Here is our basic trouble shooting you can try if you are not getting audio navigation from Scout to your BT Headset.
1. Uninstall Application
Android - Select settings - application manager - select Scout Select Uninstall
iPhone - select and hold till app wiggles and displays an x. select x and confirm deletion
2. Un-Pair Bluetooth From Device
Un-pair Bluetooth connection between the stereo/ or headset and device.
3. Reinstall Application
Android - select Google play, search for Scout. Once located select Scout and select Install
iPhone - select App Store, search for Scout. Once located select Scout and select Install or cloud icon
4. Re-pair Bluetooth Device
Please make sure the source on the stereo has been switched to Bluetooth Audio. Then, pair Bluetooth device to the car stereo, and test the audio.
We cannot test for every BT device available. Our basic info for supporting BT devices is to please make sure your BT headset is A2DP compliant. We can only allow the port to be available for audio distribution and do not control minimizing or controlling volume from other media sources.
If you are still having issues with Scout GPS Navigation please submit a request, Telenav support team will contact you as soon as possible.
