  • The queue helps keep your blog active by staggering posts over a period of hours or days. To add posts to your queue:

On the web, while creating a new post click the arrow next to "Post" and choose "Add to queue" from the menu. Then click "Queue."

On mobile, while creating a new post tap the gear wheel icon and choose "Add to queue" from the menu. Then tap "Queue."

    To access your queued posts:

On the web, click the account menu (the human icon at the top of the screen), hover over the blog whose queue you want to see, click the little dude with three lines that appears, and click "Queue."

In the iOS app, tap the account menu (the human icon), select the desired blog from the menu at the top of the screen, tap the three dots that appear at the top of the screen, and choose "Queue."

In the Android app, tap the account menu (the human icon), then tap the three dots that appear to the right of the desired blog, and choose "Queue."

Note that if there are no queued or scheduled posts at the moment, the "Queue" option won't appear in the menu.

    To edit your queue settings:

On the web, click the account menu (the human icon at the top of the screen), hover over the blog whose queue you want to see, click the little dude with three lines that appears, and click "Queue." Edit the settings you see there to specify how many posts will be published from your queue, and the time frame they'll be published in. Drag and drop the posts to reorder them.

In the Android app, tap the account menu (the human icon), then tap the three dots that appear to the right of the desired blog, and choose "Queue." Edit the settings you see there to specify how many posts will be published from your queue, and the time frame they'll be published in. Drag and drop the posts to reorder them.

The iOS app doesn't have queue settings at this time, but you can edit from a computer or a mobile browser.

Other stuff to note about the queue:

In your labs settings, turn on Queue 2.0 and get more features for your queue!

You can use the queue to publish up to 50 posts per day.

You can't pause the queue, so make sure the posts are ready to be published before adding them to the queue.

You can store 300 posts in the queue at a time. If you want to add more than that, we recommend saving posts as drafts and moving them into your queue as needed.

If your queued post fails to post for any reason, you can find it in your draft posts.

  • There are several ways to report spam on Tumblr:

Report a post: From the dashboard or in search results, tap or click the share menu (paper airplane) at the bottom of the post, and hit Report. If you're on mobile web, tap the menu at the top right of the post, and select "Report" from the dropdown. To report a post in the mobile apps, just tap the meatballs icon (the three dots) and choose Report spam.

Report a message: Tap or click "Mark as spam" under the spammer's message. Note that "Mark as spam" won't appear if it's somebody you follow, or somebody you've already had a conversation with. But on mobile, you can always tap the three dots at the top of the conversation and choose "Mark as spam."

  • Group chats are the perfect way to have better real-time discussions and make stronger connections with your mutuals, your friends, and the rest of your favorite communities on Tumblr. You need to use Tumblr version 14.5.1 or later to access group chats, which are available only on mobile devices.

    How group chats work

    Accessing group chats

Either tap the new group chat icon in the upper right-hand corner of your device, or swipe left from your dashboard to view all of the group chatsyou'vejoined or created. From there, you can tap through to additional pages to see your pending invites to peopleyou'veinvited to your owned group chats and your pending join requests to group chats you want to participate in.

Ifyou'vebeen invited to a group chat, youll see a blue indicator dot on the group chat icon. You will also see a message at the top of your inbox. Just tap through to join. Only the owner of a group chat can send invites.

Finding and joining a group chat

Group chats are shown in relevant search results based on their title, tags, and description. If you see one that looks interesting, just tap on it to preview the group chat.

If you still like what you see and want to get in on the fun, tap Request to join to request to join. Its a very aptly named button. The owner will be notified of your request, and only they will be able to approve or deny it.

    The basics

Group chats are for real-time conversation, so messages are ephemeral. Theyll disappear from view after 24 hours. Once a message is sent to the group chat, itcan'tbe edited. Keep in mind that while only people chosen by the group chat creator can participate in a group chat, all group chats, their messages, and its list of members are publicly viewable by anyone on Tumblr.

Each group chat can have up to 200 members, including the owner. If you tap on someones avatar in the chat, youll bring up a menu where you can view that person's Tumblr.

A group chat on Tumblr without GIFs would make no sense at all. Tumblrs GIF search is neatly integrated into group chats, allowing you to search and send GIFs to your hearts content. This is currently the only type of media you can send in a group chat.

If you enter a group chat that has a member whose blog you blocked on Tumblr before, youll see a message letting you know. Similarly, youll get a message if youre already in a group chat and a blogyou'veblocked enters the group chat. If you decide to participate, the person whose blog you blocked will be able to see the messages you send in the group chat, and you will be able to see theirs.

    Reporting spam and abuse

Any violation of our hate speech policy or other Community Guidelines will not be tolerated on Tumblr. If you see something against our Community Guidelines in a group chat you did not create, you have the ability to report it to our Trust & Safety team. They will review every reported header image, message, or user and remove them from the platform if found in violation of our Community Guidelines. You can also report a group chat as a whole by tapping the group chats name and then selecting Report from the meatballs menu.

    Leaving a group chat

To leave a group chat, tap into it and then tap the name of the group chat at the top of your screen, and then tap the meatballs menu on the right. From there, choose Leave group. Keep in mind that youll have to request and be approved in order to join again.

    Creating your own group chat

Ready to start your own group chat? Awesome. Just tap the + button at the top right on your group chat page, name it whatever you wish, and youre in business.

    Customizing your group chat

Tap the title of your chat at the top of the screen to open customization menu. Choose a photo from your camera roll as the background for your group chats card. This is what you see in search results and in the group chat inbox. So make it pretty. Or slimy. Or weird, funny, or cute. Make it whatever you want, basically. You can also pick a theme color, write a short description of your chat, and tag it with relevant tags so others can find it easily.

We use your group chats title, description, and tags to list it in searchso the more descriptive you are, the easier itll be for like-minded folks to find and join the group. Remember that your group chat, its messages, and its list of members are publicly visible to everyone on Tumblr.

    Adding members

Invite members to your group chat by tapping the members icon at top right (the little silhouettes), and then selecting Invite new members. Then, search for the username of the people you want to invite. Send your invites by tapping the Invite button at the bottom of your screen to notify them of their newest gift: an invite to your beautiful group chat.

    Moderating group chats

Group chat creators are the sole owners of their group chat, and it is their responsibility to keep it a friendly and welcoming space. Owners can remove any individual or a specific message by tapping the avatar of the member in question and removing them from the group chat. You can also block or report members from this view. Removing someone is a permanent action, and the removed participants will not be able to join again by an outgoing invite or incoming request.

    Deleting a group chat

To delete a group chatyou'vecreated, tap into your group chat, tap its name at the top of the screen, and find the meatballs menu on the right. Finally, gaze upon Delete group. This processcan'tbe undone! Give thanks to all your group chat has given you, and then banish it from your account forever with that small but powerful tap.

Before you go, we suggest you make sure your members are aware that the group chat is being deleted. Just send a little FYI about your intentions in a message, and give them a little time to organize elsewhere if thats what they want to do.

    Privacy and group chats

Group chats are meant for public consumption. We want to foster and build conversation in our Tumblr communities. Thats why group chats can be previewed by any member of the Tumblr community. This keeps them truly focused on the community experience.

Please also note that group chats may be moderated or monitored by Tumblr personnel. For more information on what group chat data is retained by Tumblr, please see the Tumblr Privacy Policy.

  • No matter where you see content that violates our  Community Guidelines on your dashboard, tag pages, or in search resultsyou can report it, and well investigate.

On the web, just click the share icon (that paper airplane) and choose "Report." That'll open the form and you can tell us what you're reporting from there. If you're on mobile web, tap the menu at the top right of the post, and select "Report" from the dropdown.

In the apps, tap the meatballs icon (the three dots) and choose a reporting option from there. To report an entire blog, tap the blog's username to view their blog, then tap the little human icon, and then tap "Report."

Depending on the violation you're reporting, we might need to ask you a few extra questions to help us respond quicker. Our trained experts then review the reported content in the order that we received it and take the appropriate action.

You'll know you've successfully reported a post when you see the confirmation note. Reportswon'talways result in the content being removed - sometimes our experts may determine that the reported content doesn't violate our Community Guidelines - but perhaps more importantly: you'll never see it again.

If you believe your post or blog was removed in error, please contact us here.

  • Is adult content allowed on Tumblr?

Adult content is not allowed on Tumblr, regardless of how old you are. You can read more about what kinds of content are not allowed on Tumblr in our Community Guidelines. If you spot a post that youdon'tthink belongs on Tumblr, period, you can report it: From the dashboard or in search results, tap or click the share menu (paper airplane) at the bottom of the post, and hit "Report." If you're on mobile web, tap the menu at the top right of the post, and select "Report" from the dropdown. In the apps, tap the meatballs icon (the three dots) and choose a reporting option from there.

    What is "adult content?"

Adult content primarily includes photos, videos, or GIFs that show real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples, and any contentincluding photos, videos, GIFs and illustrationsthat depicts sex acts.

    What is permitted?

Examples of exceptions that are permitted are exposed female-presenting nipples in connection with breastfeeding, birth or after-birth moments, and health-related situations, such as post-mastectomy or gender confirmation surgery. Written content such as erotica, nudity related to political or newsworthy speech, and nudity found in art, such as sculptures and illustrations, are also stuff that can be freely posted on Tumblr.

What will happen to my adult content already on Tumblr?

We will send out email notices to members of the Tumblr community whose content has been flagged as adult. If your post has been flagged as adult, it will be reverted to a private setting viewable only by you. If you want to learn more about how to see those posts, see this help article.

As always, please make sure the email associated with your Tumblr account is one you use regularly. Its how we get in touch when we need you!

My content was flagged as adult, but I don't think it should be. What should I do?

If you feel that we have categorized your post incorrectly, you can appeal this decision using the button on the post in question. Please note that this process is only possible to complete on the web or the Tumblr Android app version 12.2 or later to review your flagged content. If you are on iOS, please use the web to appeal for now.

Read more about how to review your content and appeal here.

What if my blog (not to be confused with posts) was marked as explicit before December 17, 2018?

Blogs that have been either self-flagged or flagged by us as explicit per our old policy and before December 17, 2018 will still be overlaid with a content filter when viewing these blogs directly. While some of the content on these blogs may now be in violation of our policies and will be actioned accordingly, the blog owners may choose to post content that is within our policies in the future, so wed like to provide that option. Users under 18 will still not be allowed to click through to see the content of these blogs. The avatars and headers for these blogs will also be reverted to the default settings. Additionally, posts from these blogs are kept out of search results.

You can check and see if your blog is marked as explicit per our old policy in your visibility settings. If you think your blog has been erroneously marked as explicit, learn how to appeal here.

  • Once you've tagged your posts relevantly, you can use the tags to display and organize collections of posts.

On specific posts on your blog

Tags you've added to posts will display on your blog, if your blog theme supports them. You can find themes that display tags with each post at tumblr.com/themes. Even if a theme doesnt show post tags, they will still appear in the dashboard and be searchable across Tumblr. Note that on password-protected blogs, you can add tags to keep your posts organized for yourself, but they won't be searchable on Tumblr.

    On Tumblr-wide tag pages

A tag page is a dashboard-style view of all the posts that are tagged with a given tag. Theyre a fine way to keep up with specific topics on Tumblr. The posts there appear in simple reverse-chronological order.

To get to a tag page, click the tag on your dashboard or add the tag name to the end of tumblr.com/tagged in your browser's address bar. So if you want to check out the #boba tag, youd go to tumblr.com/tagged/boba. If youre more of a #bubble tea person, visit tumblr.com/tagged/bubble-tea.

In the Tumblr mobile apps, tapping a tag from your dashboard will take you to the tagged page for that topic. In tagged pages on mobile, youll find the best and latest posts, reblogs, answer times, group chats, blogs and related tags. You can also tap Follow to follow a tag from this view.

    On blog-specific tag pages

To link to the postsyou'vegiven a specific tag, just add /tagged/tag to your blogs URL. For example:

    http://staff.tumblr.com/tagged/features http://staff.tumblr.com/tagged/events

These links will only show the 200 most recent posts with that tag in reverse chronological order (latest posts on top).

To display posts in chronological order (older posts on top), add /chrono to the end of the tag URL (i.e. http://staff.tumblr.com/tagged/features/chrono ).

To create a page on your blog that links to all your posts with a specific tag:

Click Add a page in the Pages section of your Customize menu.

Select "Link" from the dropdown menu. (If youdon'tsee this option, don'tfret to prevent spam, we unlock features over time for new accounts. Onceyou'veused Tumblr for a while to follow blogs, like posts, and customize your blog, this feature will be unlocked for you.)

In the Link to field, add the URL for the specific tagged posts you want to link to. Just add /tagged/mytag to the end of your blog URL, but replace "mytag" with the tag you want to use. For tags with multiple words, use an underscore, plus sign, or dash in between each word (i.e., /tagged/bubble_tea, /tagged/bubble+tea, /tagged/bubble-tea).

Choose a name for your new page in the "Page title" field.

    Click Save.

  • These guidelines are for law enforcement officials seeking user records from Tumblr, Inc. (Tumblr), and for Tumblr users who want to know more about our policies for dealing with law enforcement and other government requests for information. More general information about Tumblrs terms and policies is provided in our Terms of Service, Community Guidelines, and Privacy Policy.

    What is Tumblr?

Tumblr is a media network that allows users to create, post, share, and follow the digital media that they love. More information about the Tumblr platform is available here.

What are Tumblr's Principles Regarding Law Enforcement Requests?

Freedom of expression: freedom of expression is of utmost importance, and law enforcement requests should be respectful of that freedom

Compliance with law: law enforcement requests must comply with all laws, particularly those protecting user information, and must clearly establish the legal need for disclosure

Specificity: law enforcement requests must be related to specific investigations and specific accounts implicated in those investigations

Notice: whenever legally permitted, users should receive notice that their information is being requested

Security: we believe that no government should install backdoors into web security protocols, or otherwise compromise the infrastructure of the internet. We'll fight the laws that allow them to do so, and we'll work to secure our users' data against such intrusions

    Information Stored by Tumblr

Tumblr is an open platform and most Tumblr information is posted publicly, so you can usually view Tumblr blog posts, likes, and reblogs by simply visiting the appropriate Tumblr blog or tag page. You do not need a Tumblr account in order to view content posted publicly.

Tumblr collects and stores non-public user information in accordance with our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. The information we have may not be the information of a real person, for example, if the user has created a fake or anonymous profile. Tumblr does not require identity authentication.

Disclosure of Non-Public Information requires a Valid Subpoena, Search Warrant, or Other U.S. Governmental Order

Tumblr is located in New York, New York, and may disclose non-public account information only in accordance with our Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, and applicable U.S. law, including the federal Stored Communications Act, 18 U.S.C. 2701-2712.

In accordance with U.S. law, Tumblr may respond to requests for disclosure of non-public information from foreign law enforcement agencies when issued by way of a U.S. court (such as through a letter rogatory or mutual legal assistance treaty).

    Contact

Official law enforcement authorities may email requests to [email protected]. NOTE: If you are not an official law enforcement authority, do not email us at that address, as it is designated for official law enforcement requests only. We will not respond to non-law enforcement emails sent to that address. Instead, you may send your request via our abuse forms.

    Mailing address:

Tumblr, Inc. Attn: Trust & Safety 12 E. 49th Street, 11th Flr. New York, NY 10017

Receipt of correspondence by any of these means is for convenience only and does not waive any objections, including the lack of jurisdiction or proper service.

Requirements for Requests for Non-Public Information

Tumblr may disclose data that is identified with sufficient particularity through valid legal process, and that we are reasonably able to locate and retrieve.

All requests must accurately identify the specific Tumblr user account by an email address associated with the account, or an account name or URL. Tumblr will not respond to general, vague, overbroad, or imprecise requests.

Requests must also clearly identify the specific information requested, and the relationship of that information to the applicable investigation.

An order of sufficient legal scope is required for disclosure. For example, a valid subpoena issued in connection with an official criminal investigation is required to compel disclosure of basic subscriber records, as defined in 18 U.S.C. Section 2703(c)(2). Such records include length of service, registered email address(es), and IP login(s), if available. Tumblr does not collect name or address information from its users, and therefore cannot provide this information to law enforcement.

A search warrant issued under the procedures described in the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure or equivalent state warrant procedures, based on a showing of probable cause, is required to compel disclosure of the stored contents of any account, such as blog posts or messages.

Requests must come from appropriate government or law enforcement officials; Tumblr will not respond to requests from other sources.

Finally, please provide a valid law enforcement email address with your request, so that we can communicate with you upon receipt. Tumblr will not respond to any law enforcement requests sent from a non-law enforcement email address.

    User Notice

Tumblr respects its users rights and privacy. Tumblrs policy is to notify its users about requests for their information, and to provide them with copies of the legal process underlying those requests. This sort of notice is necessary so that affected users have the chance, if they wish, to challenge those requests. In some cases, Tumblr may be prohibited by law from providing notice, such as when we receive a non-disclosure order pursuant to 18 U.S.C. 2705(b). In these situations, Tumblrs policy is to notify the affected users after the non-disclosure period has elapsed.

In exceptional circumstances, such as cases involving the sexual exploitation of a child, Tumblr may elect not to provide user notice before complying with the request. If an investigation involves such an exceptional circumstance, law enforcement should provide a description of the situation for us to evaluate. In these exceptional circumstances, Tumblrs policy is to notify the affected users 90 days after the time we respond to the request.

    Preservation Requests

Tumblr will preserve account records, to the extent they are available, for 90 days upon receipt of a valid preservation request issued in accordance with applicable law. Preservation requests must comply with the general requirements for requests, above.

    Emergency Requests

If law enforcement officials believe there is an emergency involving death or serious physical injury to any person, and Tumblr may have information necessary to prevent the harm, they can submit an emergency disclosure request with the subject line EMERGENCY DISCLOSURE REQUEST. Such requests should include all of the following:

    Identity the individual in danger of death or serious physical injury;

    Nature of the emergency;

    Tumblr username/URL of the individual (e.g., http://staff.tumblr.com) of the account(s) containing information necessary to prevent the emergency;

    Links to any specific posts containing relevant information;

The specific information requested and why that information is necessary to prevent the emergency; and

Any other relevant details or context regarding the particular circumstances.

Tumblr users aware of an emergency situation should contact local law enforcement officials for assistance.

    Matters Involving Child Safety

Tumblr reports any apparent instances of child exploitation it discovers to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), including information brought to our attention by government requests. If a law enforcement request relates to a child exploitation or safety matter, those circumstances should be specified in the request (and include any NCMEC report information, if applicable), to ensure that appropriate action is taken as quickly as possible.

    Cost Reimbursement

Tumblr may seek reasonable reimbursement costs for responding to law enforcement requests for information.

If youre still having trouble verifying your email address, please contact us and well gladly assist you.

How can I get my content to appear in search?

If youre new to Tumblr, you may be wondering why youaren'tappearing in search results or tag pages. Tumblr gradually adds visibility to your blog as you use it. The more blogs you follow, the more posts you like and the more creating/reblogging of great content, the more visible you are.

Ifyou'vebeen on Tumblr for ages and are still concerned about your visibility, keep in mind that with millions of users publishing content on Tumblr every day, wecan'tguarantee that every post will appear in a given search. And thats ok! Because our search is algorithmic, it offers an incredible variety of content via tags and phrases - your content included. Even if youdon'tsee your post in search right now, that doesnt mean that other users wont.

As an aside, there are a variety of factors that may impact your contents searchability. You can read more about that in our Help Center.

Engaging with the community, gaining followers, and finding blogs to follow.

Gaining followers is all about visibility and content.

The best way to gain followers is to participate in the Tumblr community as much as possible; follow a lot of blogs, reblog and like their posts and publish great content yourself. Also don't forget to tag your posts with keywords so that other users will see them when they search Tumblr.

You can discover communities, items of interest, and blogs to follow using our search feature. On the web, click the compass icon in the top right corner of your dashboard. Using our Android or iOS mobile apps, tap the search icon. Youll find a variety of recommended topics and blogs based on your interests.

Im concerned about security on Tumblr. What security features do you have to protect my account?

Tumblr has your back when it comes to security. Tumblr is a safe way to browse, find content and interact with other users.

However, we also rely on you to take proper security precautions for your account information.

We recommend that you regularly change the passwords that you use for both your Tumblr and email accounts. You can change your password at any time on your settings page. Remember to use unique passwords for every website you log in to.

Here are some more tips to get you started with maximizing your account security:

Turn on two-factor authentication in your account settings, which will require both your password and a code from your phone when logging in. Dont forget to grab your recovery backup codes when setting it up!

Turn on the "Email me about account activity" option (also in your account settings). This will allow you to receive an email every time someone logs into your account, your password is changed, or a new app is authorized.

Make sure your computer is physically and digitally secure.

    Scan for malware or spyware.

Always log out by clicking on the account menu and selecting "Log out" at the very top of the menu, especially on public computers.

Never enter your Tumblr credentials on any site other than tumblr.com, and always look for the lock icon in your browser's address bar indicating a secure connection (e.g., https://www.tumblr.com).

Never install any software on your computer from a source youdon'tknow and trust.

If you have any questions about better security practices or have trouble setting up any of the above, pleasedon'thesitate to contact us.

How often should I change my password?

We strongly recommend changing your password often. We also recommend using a password manager to keep track of all of your passwords. Remember to use unique passwords for every website you log in to and don't re-use previous passwords.

To reset your password when youre not logged in to your account, just head over to our password reset page and request a new one. It may take up to 10 minutes to receive an email from us. If you try a few times and still aren't receiving anything, have a look at our article addressing email troubleshooting for tips on how to fix the problem.

If youd like to change your password for security purposes but youre already logged in:

Click "Settings" under the account menu at the top of the dashboard (looks like a little human). Update your password in the Password section and click "Save.

Or, using our mobile apps, tap the account icon (the person silhouette), and then the gear icon. From there, tap General settings, and then tap Password. Follow the prompts to update your password.

While youre here, take a quick look at our security tips for your account.

As always, if youre having trouble with any of this pleasedon'thesitate to contact us.

  • Here are some best practices we've put together for protecting your Tumblr account:

Choose a totally unique password for Tumblr. Its a good practice to avoid reusing passwords for any of your accounts (especially those you already chose for your email account or other social media sites), and to choose passwords that are a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. We know, its mildly annoying, but the price of freedom is eternal annoyance.

In fact we strongly recommend using a password manager to generate strong unique passwords that you don't have to remember yourselfbecause no human can do that and as far as we know the singularity hasn't happened yet.

Make your password longthe longer the better. We recommend passwords over 12 characters in length.

Always look for the reassuring lock emblem in your browser's address bar at login. And the full address should start with https://, not http://

Never enter your Tumblr credentials on any site other than tumblr.com.

Never give an application access to your Tumblr account unless it is from a source you trust.

Never share your account credentials with anyone. Not even your butler.

Set up two-factor authentication in your account settings, which makes it really difficult for impostors to log into your account.

Make sure you have Email me about account activity turned on in your account settings.

If you use Tumblr on a public computer, always log out of your session by clicking on the account menu at the top of the dashboard (looks like a little human) and then clicking Log Out at the top of the menu. In the app, tap the account icon, then the gear icon, then "General settings," then "Log out."

  • Thanks for using Tumblr, the internets foremost purveyor of your favorite content. In order to provide you with all of this content for free, we selectively run advertisements on Tumblr. We work with brands and marketers to provide you with advertising that is as relevant and useful to you as possible.

    Why you see ads

Advertising pays for the servers, electricity, and the people that run Tumblr.

The specific ads you see may be informed by various factors such as the content you are seeing, information you provide, your search history, your friends recommendations, the apps you use or based on other interests you may have. It may sound like a lot, but this information is the same stuff every website or app uses to serve ads. Read on for more information.

    How ads are selected

Ads are more effective when they are shown to people who are likely to be interested in the product or service advertised. For this reason, Tumblr and our advertising partners use the information we receive and collect to help select which ads to show you. Here are some examples:

We may select ads based on the content of the page or app on which they appear. For instance, if you are viewing a news article about a recently released album, Tumblr may show you an ad for a music store that sells albums. Similarly, ads in finance content may be related to financial services. These kinds of ads are sometimes called contextual ads.

Other ads we select may be based on information about activities and interests on websites and apps used on your device and other associated devices. These ads are sometimes called interest-based ads.

Other interest-based ads are shown based on your online activities over time and across different websites and apps used on your various devices. We may collect information about your online activities in this way in order to make predictions about what products or services might be of interest to you. Based on these predictions, we and other companies may categorize you as belonging to a segment of users to which advertisers may be interested in showing ads.

We also select ads to show you based on other information you provide or that we collect from other sources, such as your age or location, searches you conduct, apps on the device, or based on your other interests.

What data is used to provide more relevant ads to you

As explained above, Tumblr and our advertising partners use the data we collect or receive about you to help us show ads for products or services that you are likely to be interested in and make the advertising we serve more effective.

We may use the information you provide or that we receive, including information that on its own could reasonably identify you, to tailor ads when you use our services or the services of others. We may also analyze your use of our services, including your engagement with the ads we show you, to improve the effectiveness of our advertising platforms, limit the number of times you see the same ad, and measure the effectiveness of the specific ads we serve.

Some more information we thought youd like to know:

We may tailor ads based on location.

Tumblr may use information you provide, such as your age, to tailor ads when you are logged in or if you have stored this information with an Tumblr Service (even if you are logged out). Tumblr may also use this information, including personally identifiable information, to tailor ads when you are using our services.

We use a variety of tools, including, but not limited to, IP Addresses, web beacons, SDKs, cookies, and similar technologies, to support our advertising services.

We may tailor ads to you based on demonstrated or declared interests.

We may personalize ads to you based upon activities of accounts and devices associated with you.

We use data that we receive from other sources to help us provide more effective advertising. For example, we may use data that is available from public or commercial sources and combine it with other data we have collected or received about a user or the users device for these purposes.

We do not use, or allow others to use, sensitive financial account number data or other sensitive data (as defined by the self-regulatory programs listed below) to determine eligibility for health insurance, life insurance, or employment. We also do not target ads to users based on sensitive health data, including cancer, mental health-related conditions, and sexually-related areas.

Please keep in mind that if a user appears interested in non-sensitive, health-related topics (such as by visiting pages related to such a topic) an ad relevant to those interests may be displayed. We also may display non-sensitive, health-related ads to users who we or our advertisers believe may be an appropriate audience for such topics.

To learn more about how we select the ads you see, and the data we use, you can also check out Tumblrs privacy policy.

How to manage your ad settings

For those Tumblr users that live in the European Economic Area and are subject to the EUs General Data Privacy Regulations (GDPR), you can manage your ads settings by accessing your privacy settings.

For users outside of the European Economic Area, we work with the following industry groups, whose aim is to provide consumers with more choice, transparency, and control over how advertisers collect and use data:

    EDAA (EU) - http://www.youronlinechoices.com

    NAI (US) - http://www.networkadvertising.org

    DAA (US) - http://www.aboutads.info

    DDAI (Japan) - http://www.ddai.info

These organizations offer browser-based tools for opting out of the collection and use of your web viewing data for interest-based advertising and other applicable uses. Note that this only applies to the browser you use to access the tool, and only to the advertisers who participate in these industry groups.

Its also worth noting that Tumblr doesnt partner with all of these advertisers (far from it, in fact)! But since our users are informed ad consumers, we figured these tools would be useful anywhere the internet takes you. There are also browser extensions that you can look into, but just know that some extensions negatively affect the way Tumblr works. So use them at your own risk.

    How to turn off ads

Unfortunately, until we live in a post-consumerist society built on an economy of surplus instead of scarcity that would enable us to procure both labor and materials at zero marginal cost, there is no way to remove ads from your Tumblr experience.

  • As we announced a few weeks ago, Tumblr is being acquired by Automattic

As part of the acquisition, were updating our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. As of September 25, 2019, these updated terms and policies will apply to your use of Tumblr.

In advance of the transition, we put together this FAQ to answer any questions you might have:

    Wait, what exactly is Automattic?

Automattic is a web tool development company with productssuch as WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Jetpack and Simplenotethat help connect publishers to communities around the world.

Whats going to happen to my Tumblr account and blogs?

Nothing! Youll still be able to access your blog(s) the same way you do now, and your blognames and login credentials will not change.

I have a WordPress.com account. Will my accounts be merged?

Nope. Your Tumblr account and any accounts you have for WordPress.com (or any other Automattic properties) will remain separate.

I got an email saying I have until September 25, 2019 to opt-out of Tumblrs updated Terms of Service, and that after that my account will be governed by the new Terms of Service. What does that mean?

As part of the acquisition, were updating our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. As of September 25, 2019, these updated terms and policies will apply to your use of Tumblr.

If you do nothing in that time, your account will simply transition to Tumblrs new Terms of Service and Privacy Policy on September 25. If you do not want the updates to apply to you, you can delete your Tumblr account before September 25. If you want to preserve anything from your account, be sure to export your blog before you delete your account.

You'll still have the option to export your blog and delete your account after September 25, but you'll need to take those steps before that date if you don't want the updates to apply to you.

Also, you are free to export your blog contents at any time! We think its important that you have the ability to backup your content, or take it with you if you want to leave.

Will Tumblrs adult content policy change with these new Terms of Service?

No, we will not be rolling back or changing our adult content policies.

I actuallycan'tremember what my login is. Can you help me?

If youre having trouble logging in to your Tumblr account, you can find instructions for resetting your password here. Email troubleshooting tips can be found here.

How can I keep up to date on any future changes?

For most updates, well make announcements on our Staff blog and in our Help Center. For any significant changes to your Tumblr service, well send you an email, just like the one we sent about the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy changes noted above.

If you have a question thats not answered here, just drop us a line.

  • Ifyou'vebeen selected to participate in beta testing the Future of Tumblr, this is the place to find more info.

Who gets to be in the beta? How can I get in on this?

We randomly selected a small slice of people on Tumblr to try out the beta. If youre one of them, please share your feedback with us by clicking the Feedback button in the lower right corner of your dashboard.

Unfortunately, we are not opening up this beta test to applicants at this time.

    So whats different?

The beta should be smoother, faster, and more accessible. Youll also see updated design elements (like color and font tweaks), the option for grid view in your likes and tag pages, and a web implementation of Color Palettes.

Right now, all of the above will apply just to the dashboard, your likes page, and tag pages. Everything else will look familiar.

Also (and this is important), theres a new meatballs menu () located at the top right of each post. Clicking this gives you the option to copy the post link, unfollow the Tumblr who made or reblogged the post, or report a violation to our Community Guidelines.

    What features are missing?

Some parts of messaging, sharing a post (the airplane icon), most of the keyboard shortcuts, and a few other things havent yet been built for the beta. If you need these features, no problemjust click the toggle to exit the beta test.

    How do I switch back?

Theres a toggle right at the top of your dashboard that you can use to turn the beta on and off. Just flip it to go back to your usual Tumblr experience.

You can also turn it off by navigating to your account settings, clicking on the Dashboard section, and flipping the beta toggle to off.

If youre the type of person who knows what that means, then you can upload new HTTPS assets. Head to your Theme Customization page, click Edit HTML, and then click Theme assets.

Otherwise, you can fix this issue by installing a new theme for your blog.

    Single photos

On the web:First, open a new photo post form. From there, you can either:

Click the camera icon to upload images from your computer.

Drag files directly from your desktop into the post form.

Or click the globe icon to post a photo from a specific URL.

Tip:To add click-through links, hover over the photo and click the link icon that appears in the top right corner.

Another tip:Take a selfie using your webcam by clicking on the lil smiley face.

Privacy tip:When an image that contains EXIF data is uploaded and posted as a Photo, your Dashboard will automatically display that images EXIF data. If youdon'twant your images EXIF data to be shown, see if your camera lets you disable EXIF data.

You can also remove EXIF data from your images before you upload them to Tumblr. Learn more about this here.

On mobile:In the mobile apps, you can post photos in a couple of ways. You can:

Open a new photo post form. Take a photo, or upload one from your camera roll. Done. Thesearen'teven really instructions. These are just statements. Thats how easy this is.

Insert a photo when makingany type of post, simply by tapping the camera icon and then taking or selecting your photo.

You can also add one of our dynamic filters to any photo taken in the Tumblr app. Here's how:

Tap the pencil at the bottom of your screen for creating a post.

Select the GIF, photo, or video post type.

Tap the camera at the top of your screen.

See that disco ball? Tap it to view and scroll through the filters.

Once you find one you like, just tap again to capture your content.

And here's another tip:To add a sticker or text overlay to your photo, click or tap the icons that appear below the photo once you've selected it.

    Photosets

Its embarrassingly easy to post a photoset.

On the web:Just pop open a new photo post and do one of the following:

Drag more than one file into the post form.

Select more than one file when youre uploading a photo.

You can choose up to 10 images. Then just drag them around to create the layout you want.Ifyou'vealready added photos, you can add more by clicking the camera icon below them that says Add another.

Tip:If you hold down the alt/option key, the camera icon turns into a globe and you can add more photos from the web via URL instead of uploading from your computer.

Another tip:You can caption individual photos in a photoset, if you want. Just hover over the photo in question and click on the ellipsis in the corner. Alas, people will only see these captions if they happen to click on the photo in the dashboard. So...dont put anything actually important in there. • A reblog is when you see a post you enjoy on Tumblr, and by clicking the reblog button, you make the post appear on your blog too. Now all of your followers can enjoy the post, thanks to your signal boost.

You should feel free to add commentary, or pics, or a gif when you reblog something. Or not! Whatever floats your perfectly specific boat.

To reblog, firstmake sure youre logged into Tumblr. Once you are, just look in the lower right corner of that post on the dashboard (or the upper right hand corner of a blog posts permalink page) and youll see the reblog button - two arrows forming a rectangle. Hit it. From there, you can add your own caption if you want, and publish it on your blog.To upload an image or GIF, click or tap the corresponding picture icon or the little GIF icon to search for one.

You can also reblogstarting from a certain post in the reblog thread. Just click the username of whoever made the reblog you want to reblog from. It'll open up, and you can click or tap its reblog icon to reblog that post.

    Some more points about reblogs:

You can't editearlier reblogs, or the original post, in your reblog. You can choose whether or not you want to include that stuff in your own reblog, but you can't really go in and edit other people's text, you little scamp.

Toremove captions on a post you'rereblogging, just hit the reblog button and look for the X that appears next to the existing commentary. Punch it, and all those words will disappear. Keep in mind that this is an all-or-nothing thing: youcan'tdelete a single reblog caption within the thread.

Tobe sure yourposts are credited properly once others start reblogging them, use the content source field ! In fact, well automatically use it for you. No matter how many times an original post of yours gets reblogged, youll always be credited as the source. Rebloggers might add a gif, or some commentary, or take out the caption entirely, but your username will always, always be stuck to the bottom of the post. Click on that source link any time you want to see what was originally posted.

  • If you'rehaving trouble uploading an image, try the following:

For static images, make sure the file is no larger than 20MB and is either a JPEG or a PNG.

If youre posting an animated GIF, make sure it is smaller than 3MB and no more than 540 pixels wide.

Try saving a brand new version of the file using the photo/image application of your choice. This can sometimes help remove any encoding snags that may have been in the original file.

Wedon'tsupport CMYK files or other non-RGB image files, so save the image in RGB and try uploading again.

The largest image most blog themes support is 500 pixels wide by 750 pixels tall. Stay within that limit to avoid the scaling down of your image.

If you click on an image in a Photo post, you will taken to a larger version of the image if one is available. That larger version can be up to 1280 pixels wide and 1920 pixels tall.

Going to a larger version is only possible if the image on the blog does not have a click-through link that takes you to another website.

  • Editing yourcustom HTML

To edit your blog theme's HTML:

Click "Settings" under the account menu at the top of the dashboard.

Choose the blog youd like to update on the right side of the page, then click Edit theme in the Website Theme section.

Click the Edit HTML button and edit the custom HTML as desired in the source code editor. To see the changes reflected on the page, click Update Preview.

When you're finished, click the back arrow and then click "Save."

Weve also got a brilliant guide to making custom Tumblr themes right here.

Pro tip: You canrevert to an earlier version of your theme's custom HTML (you know, if youre feeling nostalgic about an old version). We store recent versions of your Custom HTML on our Theme Recovery page. If youdon'tsee the version you want, it might be too many revisions back. This means its gone forever.

    Troubleshooting

If your blog looks a little wrecked or is totally blank, its possible thatyou'veinserted incorrect code into your theme or blog description. Try the following:

Remove all code from the description box at the top of your Customize menu. Click "Save," then view your blog to see if the problem is resolved.

Save a copy of your custom HTML, then re-install the theme from www.tumblr.com/themes.

    Tips:

Clear your browser cache between changes to make sure you're seeing a current version of your blog. The easiest way is to hit Cmd+Shift+R on a Mac or Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows, which will completely refresh the page.

If you can't view the Customize button on your blog, you can still access the Customize menu in several other ways.

  • If you're having trouble with the app, first make sure your device is running iOS 12 or newer. If the app is still being slow or acting dumb, try the following:

Log out and log back in.

Switch from mobile data to wifi.

    Remove and reinstall the app.

Check your phone storage. Is it full? Try unfilling it.

Try resetting your device. Press the sleep/wake button (at the top) and the home button for approximately 10-20 seconds. After holding both buttons for about 5 seconds, the "slide to power off" button will appear. Ignore it and continue to hold the buttons for a few more seconds until the screen goes blank and the Apple logo appears. This may take longer on older devices (up to 30 seconds).

  • Tumblr and certain graphics, logos, badges, designs, page headers, button icons and scripts are trademarks, service marks and trade dress of Tumblr, Inc. (Tumblr, we or us) in the United States and other countries, (the Tumblr Marks). We support and encourage ideas, services, tools and other creative works that use and supplement the Tumblr services but were required to protect our reputation and brand identity and ask you to follow these guidelines.

If youdon'tagree to follow these guidelines, youdon'thave a right to, and shouldnt, use the Tumblr Marks. To help us address future branding concerns, we may modify these guidelines from time to time without notice to you. Youre responsible for following any modified terms, so you should review these guidelines and become familiar with any modifications we make.

Why does Tumblr have to protect its Marks?Trademark law in the U.S. and other jurisdictions requires mark-holders to protect against improper or confusingly similar use of their marks, so that end usersaren'tmisled about the origin and endorsement of products and services. In some cases, mark-holders can lose their trademarks if they don't protect them.

    General Guidelines

    Do:

Use the Tumblr Marks to refer to Tumblr, Inc., our services and websites, our apps, and anything else we offer.

Make sure the Tumblr Marks stand out in some way when you use them, and particularly make sure to at least capitalize the word "Tumblr."

Use the Tumblr Marks as adjectives (for example, Tumblr blog) and not as nouns or verbs (for example, Did you see that Tumblr? or Lets Tumblr today!), except when using them as nouns referring to our services and company.

    Don't:

Dont incorporate the Tumblr Marks, or anything confusingly similar, into domain names, screen names, website names, trademarks, trade names, company names, DBAs, etc. anddon'tuse the Tumblr Marks as part of the name for a product or service not offered by Tumblr, unless we have given express permission.

Dont modify or alter the Tumblr Marks, like by adding to, changing or abbreviating the Tumblr Marks to create new words (for example, Tumblr-ized).

Dont use the Tumblr Marks in a way that suggests incorrectly that Tumblr is affiliated with, sponsors or endorses you, your websites, your products or your services.

Dont use other trademarks, service marks, designs, trade dress or logos that might be confusingly similar to the Tumblr Marks or the look and feel of Tumblrs services. For example, using three-or-more-letter aspects of the word Tumblr as the name of your product or service may be confusing to some users, like Rumblr or Tumbroll."

    Appearance

When you use the Tumblr Marks, you should make sure your use is consistent with how Tumblr uses the Tumblr Marks in similar media. We might provide you with guidelines on size, typeface, colors and other graphic characteristics of the Tumblr Marks, and those should be considered part of these guidelines.

    Other Specific Guidelines

    Tumblr Merchandise

You shouldnt use the Tumblr Marks on any merchandise without our permission. If you have great ideas for Tumblr merchandise, let us know.

    Use of the Tumblr API

If you use our API in your application or service, we ask that you follow these guidelines and, if your application or service displays any Tumblr Marks associated with Tumblr features made available through the API, somewhere include the statement:

This [application/service] uses the Tumblr application programming interface but is not endorsed or certified by Tumblr, Inc. All of the Tumblr logos and trademarks displayed on this [application/service] are the property of Tumblr, Inc.

If youdon'tfollow these guidelines, Tumblr reserves the right to revoke your access to our API.

  • Two-factor authentication (TFA) makes it especially difficult for anyone other than you (e.g., hackers, exes, et al) to access your Tumblr account. Aside from your regular login info, you'll need a couple of extra things to log into your account:

Your phone (which you've hopefully password-protected).

A unique, single-use code (sent via text or generated by an authenticator app).

    Setting up two-factor authentication

Click "Settings" under the account menu at the top of the dashboard (the person silhouette). Or head directly to https://www.tumblr.com/settings/account.

In the Security section, enable Two-factor authentication.

Now decide whether you'd like to receive the code via text or through an authenticator app (were into Google Authenticator ).

Follow the steps laid out in the Settings page.

Logging in on the web with two-factor authentication

If you've enabled TFA, it should work like this:

    Log into your Tumblr account.

Once you've received the unique code (either via SMS or through an authenticator app), enter the code in the specified field.

    Voil! You're in!

Logging in through the iOS or Android apps with two-factor authentication

When you have two-factor authentication turned on, you'll need to generate a special one-time-use password in order to log in through your mobile apps. Using either app, you should receive the code via text or through an authenticator app, depending on which method you chose during setup. Don't worry about memorizing that password, by the way. You'll only need it once, and it's really stupid-looking anyway.

    Generating backup codes

You can generate backup codes to get back into your Tumblr account, in case youdon'thave access to your phone for some reason. Heres how to get them:

Head to your Account Settings on web.

In the Security section, click on the Generate backup codes button (note that youll need to have two-factor authentication enabled in order to see this option).

Enter your account password when prompted.

Blammo: youll see 10 backup codes.

These backup codes can be used whenever youre prompted to enter a TFA code. Store them in the safest of places. Theyre private, just like your password. Just keep in mind that each backup code can only be used once. If you use all 10, simply generate more the same way you generated this bunch.

    Troubleshooting two-factor authentication

If you havent received the code after a few minutes for SMS authentication, you can click on the refresh-arrow icon next to Enter auth code to send another one.

If you're not receiving a code for an authenticator app, check again in a minute or so.

Still no code? Check that the time on your device is accurate for your current location and that it's set to automatically update. Also, make sure that your device is not in sleep, airplane or "do not disturb" mode.

Note that if you lose your two-factor device, it may be difficult to regain access to your account. Please contact us for assistance.

    Disabling two-factor authentication

We strongly advise against this. Your account is far less likely to get compromised if you've enabled two-factor authentication. But if you must, go ahead and turn it off again in your account settings, and we'll ask you to enter your account password to make sure it's really you. You'll then be able to log in to your account without the extra verification step. If you would like to re-enable it at any point, you'll have to go through the setup process again.

    Recommended authentication apps

We recommend Google Authenticator, which you can download for iOS and Android. Or, if you really hate Google, you can also use DUO Mobile ( iOS, Android ).

In your account settings, make sure theres not a typo in the email address listed for your account.

Check your spam or junk filters.

Add [email protected] to your Address Book or Contacts.

Try changing your email address to another address you have access to, and see if you successfully receive email at that address.

For password reset emails, note that during peak use hours, it may take up to ten minutes to receive the email. If you do not receive the email after this period of time, revisit the Forgot Password page to request a new reset email.

If your registered email address is correct and you're still having issues receiving email from Tumblr, use the link at the bottom of this page to contactus.

If you're not sure which email account you signed up with, try the following:

Search your email accounts for messages that come from @tumblr.com [email protected], [email protected], or [email protected].

If you have an email address that works under multiple domains (e.g. @gmail.com/@googlemail.com, @aol.com/@aim.com, @me.com/@mac.com), try logging in with each of the domains your email address supports.

If youknow the email account you signed up with butdon'thave access to it:

And you tried everything, huh? Well, your best bet at this point is to look into any resources your email provider offers to those who have lost touch with themselves.

  • HTTPS

All of Tumblr is served over HTTPS by default.

HTTPS is used to create an encrypted link between a browser and web server. This prevents eavesdroppers from snooping on the traffic between the two. Think of it as a tasty tortilla keeping the inner ingredients of your burrito a mystery. Is it chicken or three bean? Only the chef and customer can know for sure.

    HTTPS and themes

If you're a theme developer and you'd like to ensure your themes support HTTPS, make sure that any externally hosted resources, such as Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) or Javascript files, and even images, are served using HTTPS. If these filesaren'tavailable over HTTPS, consider uploading them at the Theme Customization page (In your blog settings, click Edit HTML and then Theme assets).

    HTTPS and custom domains

We support HTTPS for blogs with custom domains. After you add a custom domain name for your blog, it will take a little while (typically less than a day) for it to activate. You'll receive an email when it's ready.

  • Recommendations are posts, blogs, or searches that Tumblr thinks you might like.

In our mobile apps, some recommendations will appear with reasons that explain why you're seeing them:

In your orbit means that some people you follow also follows the recommended Tumblr.

Like [insert username here] means the recommended Tumblr is similar to another you already follow, or is related to a blog you recently followed.

You seem interested meansyou'veliked a few posts from this Tumblr before but you're not following them yet.

Big in [insert tag here] means you like a lot of stuff with that tag, so you might like this too.

You can make each recommendation disappear forever by clicking or tapping the X at the top of the recommendation. By disappear forever, we mean that we'll never recommend that post or blog to you again.

    Tips

If youre just starting out on Tumblr, try following some more blogs to reduce the overall amount of recommendations youre seeing.

Sometimes people mistake followed searches for recommendations. If you want to stop seeing followed searches, tap the search icon (magnifying glass), tap one of the Tags you follow at the top of the screen, and tap Unfollow in the search bar. On the web, just click in the search bar to find your followed searches.

You can opt out of In your orbit recommendations. You can read about managing your dashboard preferences here.

For better, more relevant recommendations, toggle on Improved Search in your settings.

If you see something that doesnt belong on Tumblr, please report it. You can learn how to report content here: Reporting offensive content

  • Messaging is kindalike chat. You send some characters to another user, they read them, and maybe they send some characters back to you. You do this enough and its called communicating. Communicating, or messaging, has been around for centuries. This is just our take on it.

    How and what to message

To start a conversation, just look for the speech / chat bubble. In case it isn't obvious, it's that smiley face inside a speech bubble :)

    From the app:

Tap the chat bubble to open activity and messages.

    Tap the new message bubble.

    Enter a blog name.

Start a conversation. You complete me is the traditional opener but Hello is also acceptable. Feel free to experiment with your own openers and see where it goes.

    From posts:

Click or tap the paper airplane icon.

Enter the name of a Tumblr you want to send that post to.

    Discuss.

    From the web:

Click the chat bubble at the top right of your dashboard.

Type the name of the Tumblr you want to message.

Say something. But, like, be cool.

To send a picture in a message, click or tap the camera icon, choose an image (including GIFs), and send. Or you can use an existing Tumblr GIF: just click or tap the GIF icon instead, and search for that perfect GIF to say what's in your heart.

Pro tip: If youre on the web, you can just drag an image right into a conversation. No clicking required.

    Who to message

You can message pretty much anyone. Its really up to the receiverthey have all the control. If they want to accept messages from everyone on Tumblr, then you can message them. If they only accept messages from Tumblrs they follow (see next question), you have to get them to follow you first.

For example, lets say @cheezbag follows @pocketcheez, but @pocketcheezisn'tfollowing back. Its a one-way follow.

If they both accept messages from anyone, then either person can initiate a conversation with the other.

If they only accept messages from Tumblrs they follow, then only @pocketcheez can initiate the conversation because @cheezbag follows them.

A couple other caveats: Youcan'tmessage group blogs (not yet, anyway) or anyone whos blocked you (obviously).

Another thing to note is that you might receive a message fromTumblrbot.Tumblrbot is an official Tumblr bot and it might message you (just once) if it thinks it can help with something. Reply with stop to stop receiving messages from the bot. As Tumblrbot learns more about humans, it will respond in new and different ways.

To encourage communication, you can let your Tumblr friends see that you have recently been active on your blog. We indicate this with a little green dot next to your avatar. If you'd rather not show this, it's easy to turn off.

To prevent people from messaging you, just go to your blog settings and flip the Only allow messages from Tumblrs you follow switch. Now Tumblrs youdon'tfollowwon'tbe able to start conversations with you. Presumably the people you do followaren'tjerks (Note: this setting will not apply to users with whom you've previously had a conversation). You can also block users individually but that will prevent them from interacting with you or your posts in any way.

    Etc.

If you wish, you canturn off messaging sounds.

In the app: From your Account tab, tap "Settings" and then "Sounds." You can turn off those bloops, shlings, and fwips from there.

On the web: From your dashboard settings, toggle the "Messaging sounds" option off.

Disabling messaging entirelyisnot a thing. But you can block anyone whos being a tool by clicking or tapping the menu (looks like three dots) in the top right-hand corner of the conversation.

  • Asks are more of a one-off Q&A, not a two-way conversation like messaging. And unlike messages, asks can be published to a blog and reblogged by other users.

As the asker (the sender) you can choose to submit a question as yourself or as an anonymous phantom. As the askee (the receiver) you can choose to respond publicly (by publishing to your blog) or privately.

One quirk: You can only respond to anonymous asks publicly, since wedon'tknow who sent it.

    Enabling asks

Toenable the ask feature on the web:

Click "Settings" under the account menu at the top of the dashboard, then on the right side of the page, choose the blog youd like to update.

In the Ask section, enable Let people ask questions.

Fill in Ask page title with whatever youd like to name the Ask page (and the Ask link on your theme if it shows one).

If you want to allow anyone (not just Tumblr users) to ask questions, check the box that says Allow anonymous questions.

    And in the app:

Tap the account icon (the little human).

Tap the blog name at the top of the screen to select the blog youd like to update, if its not already showing.

    Tap the gear icon.

Turn the Let people ask questions option on.

Note:You can send up to 10 asks per hour, and only five of those can be anonymous.

    Sending an ask

To send an ask (assuming that the blog has itturned on):

In the app: Go to a blog, tap the person icon, and then Ask.

On the web: Hover over an avatar and click the person icon.

From the blog: Look for the ask link, or add /ask or /submit to the end of their URL.

    Accessing your asks

    To get toyour asks:

In the app: Go to the account tab (the human), then tap the gear iconand choose Inbox. Note that the "Inbox" option won't show up if you don't have any asks or submissions at the moment.

On the web: Click the envelope near the top right corner of the screen.

Making sure the ask linkshows up onyourblog

Most themes automatically detect when you turn on asks. But if you know that you turned them on and youre not seeing the link on your public-facing blog, go to tumblr.com/customize to find the right switch.

If you enable this featureand the link does not appear on your blog automatically, youll need to manually add the link to your blogs description.

Click "Settings" under the account menu at the top of the dashboard, then choose the blog youd like to update on the right side of the page.

Click Edit theme in the Website Theme section.

Edit your description to add the links. For example:<a href="/ask">Ask me Stuff!</a>

    Click Save and Exit.

    Troubleshooting

If you suspect your asks aren't getting delivered, these are the most common reasons that could happen:

The sender exceeded the ask limit. You can only send 10 asks per hour, and only five of those can be anonymous.

The ask included links, paragraph breaks, special characters, emoticons, or ellipses, or didnt have spaces between sentences.

The ask was longer than 500 characters.

The recipient blocked an entire network location. This can happen if a user blocks an anonymous ask sent from a library or other public location. When that happens, no one from that location can send that person an ask.

  • Who am I following?

You can view and manage who you follow by clicking or tapping the account menu (the little human), then clicking or tapping Following.

To toggle sharing your following list on and off in a web browser, visit your settings and look for Share the Tumblrs youre following. In the apps, tap the palette icon while viewing your blog, then tap Following and Change.

    Whos following me?

You can also see a list of the current followers of your blog. To see that list on the web, click on the account menu (the little human), then scroll down and select Followers. In the app, tap on the account icon (the little human), then tap on the gear icon to view your settings. Tap on Followers to view the full list of your blogs followers.

To see followers for a secondary blog, first select that blog, and then find the Followers option as before.

If you see someone on that list that youd rather not be following your blog (hi Mom!), you can choose to block them using these instructions.

    Your follower count

Its natural to be curious or frustrated about fluctuations in your blogs follower count. Other Tumblrs can decide to follow and unfollow based on all kinds of whims of their own, and we also sometimes take action to keep the Tumblr ecosystem safe (like removing spam accounts). Thats why youll see your blog gaining (and, yes, losing) followers at different rates.

The best approach for finding and keeping your audience is the tried-and-true, organic approach: be an active member of the Tumblr community. Here are some tips:

Post more often. You can also try posting in the morning or afternoon, after work hours, so more people see your post.

Try to find users that have similar interests as you. Users that have an interest in a particular hobby or mindset tend to follow each other.

Dont forget to tag your posts. Tagging is one of the most important parts of gaining Tumblr notoriety. Tags increase the discoverability of your content, so tag away!

Engage with the community as much as possible. Reblog and Like posts by others and follow accounts that you love.

Give credit where credit is due. Only post content that you own or have permission to use, and, credit the author with a link/mention. Not sure? Consult the Copyright or trademark infringement section of our Community Guidelines.

Send messages and ask questions to your favorite blogs.

  • Android Open Beta

What is the Android public beta?

We're always tinkering with the appbuilding new features, improving old onesand those changes need to be tested. Tested on different devices, with different settings, by people who use the app in different ways.

A public beta lets us test a pre-release version of the app with thousands of people, all doing things a little bit differently, to uncover all the little bugs hiding in the nooks and crannies.

Is the beta version of the app safe?

Yeah! It's just as secure as the normal version. It's just a little ragged around the edges. And that's the trade-off: If you want to help us squash bugs, you gotta use the buggy version of the app.

How do I register for the public beta?

If you have an Android thing with Tumblr installed go here: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.tumblr

    Then

    Click "Become a tester."

Wait. It can take a few hours for your app to update to the beta version.

    Use Tumblr as usual.

I tried to register but it said there were no more spaces.

Ah, yeah. We capped the number of testers at 5,000 people. Thanks for your interest, though. If people drop out and more spots become available we'll make an announcement.

I have the beta. How do I report a bug?

Shake your phone! Quickly! Like you're trying to scramble the bug inside your phone.

A bug report screen will pop up with a screenshot and some technical details for the developers. Press "compose email" to send them to our Engineering team, along with any extra info you want to write in the email bodylike what you were doing when the bug appeared.

How do I know if a bug is really a bug or if someone reported it already?

Don't even worry about that. If something looks off, report it. Even if it's not a bug, if it looks wonky to you it might need to be rethought.

    Where do bug reports go?

Into a ticketing system where they get routed to the right engineer for review and smooshing.

I'm sick of bugs. How do I leave the beta test?

No problem. Go back here: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.tumblr

Click "Leave the program" then delete and reinstall Tumblr. It might take a couple hours before you can download the public app after leaving the beta program. So just keep that in mind.

I have an iPhone, can I beta test the app?

Not right now. For now, the public beta is only for Android. Maybe in the future, though.

What's the biggest bug you ever did see?

The "Delete All of Tumblr" button was a pretty big mistake. If you see it, report it. Do not press.

    Android Closed Alpha

Whats the difference between alpha and beta?

Tumblr open beta is the first iteration of our testing programs for Android devices. Tumblr closed alpha is our second. With the former, your app is updated approximately every other week, while the latter is a nightly build. Thats right, baby. Automatic updates every night, flush with the newest enhancements and stability.

Is the alpha version of the app safe?

Of course! It's just as secure as the normal and the beta versions. It just has a few more bumps and lumps than the beta or regular app. That's the trade-off: If you want to get on the front lines and help us squash bugs, you gotta use the buggy version of the app.

How do I apply for the closed alpha?

Visit the Google Group and apply for membership.

    Wait for your acceptance email!

Visit the Tumblr Google Play page. Youll see a prompt to "Become a beta tester"

Wonder why it says beta and not alpha.

Feel enlightened when you find out its because Google Playwon'tlet us rename that prompt. Its all betas to those guys.

Accept prompt to "Join beta program."

    I didnt get an email.

It may take up to a few days to get accepted. If you feel its been too long, check that dreaded spam folder.

I have the alpha.

Why is the Google Group empty?

We're gathering feedback and reports through the app and email only.

What if I have questions about the alpha app?

You can include them in the rage-shake emails described above. Unfortunately, we cannot respond to every single email. Please know that each one is read and filed appropriately. Bugs, comments, suggestions, concernswe keep all of it in mind.

I'm sick of bugs. How do I leave the alpha test?

    No problem. Go here.

Select "Membership and email settings," "Leave group, then confirmyou'vemade the right decision. Youll keep this version of the app until the next production version is released.

I have an iPhone, can I help test the app?

Yep! Click here to find out how.

Note: Search engines cache content from all over the internet, including Tumblr. Sometimes the cached version of a Tumblr blog or post may remain on a search engine for some time, even after its removed from Tumblr oryou'vehidden it from search engines. Wedon'tcontrol search engine caches, so youd need to reach out directly to the search engine to have any content removed from its cache.

    Privacy and explicit blogs

If your blog was either self-flagged or flagged by us as explicit per our old policy before December 17, 2018, it will be overlaid with a content filter when viewing directly by you or anyone else and your posts will not show up in search.
