Venmo's Frequently Asked Questions page is a central hub where its customers can always go to with their most common questions. These are the 107 most popular questions Venmo receives.
Do payments sent to me automatically show up in my bank account?
Nope - whenever you receive a payment from one of your friends, the money is put in your Venmo account. You need to initiate a bank transfer for the funds to be sent to your bank account. You can do that by tapping the "" icon at the top of the app and then "Transfer to Bank" or “Transfer Money” (Alternately: Tap “Manage Balance” and then “Transfer to Bank”). Then, choose "Instant" (1\% fee, minimum of $0.25 and maximum of $10.00) or "1-3 biz days" (no fee). Please note that transfers are reviewed which could cause a delay or for funds to be frozen or removed from your Venmo account.
Find out more about the money in your Venmo account here.
What is the limit on bank transfers?
If you’ve verified your identity with us, your weekly rolling limit for bank transfers is $19,999 ($2,999.99 per transfer). Your limit will be set at $999.99 if you haven’t verified your identity. To learn more about limits, or how to verify your identity, please see this article. As noted in Venmo’s User Agreement, these limits may change from time to time in Venmo’s sole discretion.
Can you rush my bank transfer?
If you’d like to move the money from your Venmo account into your bank account more quickly, you might consider an instant transfer. Instant transfer is a feature that allows Venmo users to transfer the money in their Venmo account to certain bank accounts or eligible Visa and Mastercard debit cards, typically within 30 minutes. A 1\% fee (with a minimum fee of $0.25 and a maximum fee of $10) is deducted from the transfer amount for each transfer.
If you’ve already initiated a standard bank transfer, there’s not a way for us to expedite that process. Once you request a transfer, the money leaves our system, and the money is sent to your bank to process. For more info about when you can expect to receive those funds, please see this article.
Where is my bank transfer?
Missing your transfer in your bank account? It’s possible your bank could have back-dated the transfer to an unexpected date. We recommend checking your bank statement within a range of two days around the expected date that you were shown when you initiated the transfer. You should see something along the lines of “VENMO-0 CASHOUT”. If you’re still not seeing the funds in your bank account, check out this article for more information and ways to contact us about it.
What is the difference between instant transfer and standard bank transfer?
There are two ways to get your money out of your Venmo account:
Instant transfer to your eligible bank account or debit card. This type of transfer incursa 1\% fee (a minimum fee of $0.25 and a maximum fee of $10 is deducted from the transfer amount for each transfer) and typically arrives within 30 minutes. Please see more information here.
Standard transfer through the ACH network to your verified checking account (which is free but typically arrives 1-3 business days after you request the transfer.)
Please note, transfers are reviewed which may result in delays or funds being frozen or removed from your Venmo account. Learn more here.
View ArticleWhat funding source is used to pay for purchases at participating businesses?
When you make a purchase from an authorized merchant using your Venmo account and there aren’t enough funds in your balance (or if you don't have access to a Venmo balance ), the entire amount of the purchase will be pulled from the backup payment method that you’ve set.
Can I use different payment methods when I’m purchasing in merchant apps and websites, and when I’m sending money to friends from the Venmo app or on Venmo.com ?
Yes, you can set different default payment methods for purchases and payments to friends. You’ll be prompted to set up these payment methods when you make a purchase for the first time.
How do I change my payment method for purchases?
To change your payment method for purchases, navigate to "Settings" in the app. Under the "Buying" heading, tap "Backup Payment." There, you can choose your preferred default or add a new bank account or card.
View ArticleWhy was my purchase declined?
You may not have had enough funds in your account, or we were worried that it was fraudulent activity. Please contact Venmo Support for more information.
I’m not satisfied with my purchase. Who do I contact?
If you’re not satisfied with a purchase you made with Venmo through an authorized partner’s app, please contact the merchant partner first. They should be able to assist further.
If you are not able to come to a solution with the business, please feel free to reach out to Venmo’s support team at [email protected]. While we don’t guarantee a refund, we’ll work with you to help you come to a solution.
You can read more about Venmo's Authorized Merchant Payment Protection policy here.
How long does a refund take?
The timing for a refund depends on the policy of the business you purchased it from.
Do you honor partial refund requests?
Generally, partial refunds are not supported by Venmo, and these types of requests should be completed with the merchant you purchased goods or services from.
Will refunds be credited to my bank account, card, or Venmo account?
In most instances, refunds will be credited to the same payment method that you used for the original purchase. Sometimes, for various reasons, your refund will be credited to your Venmo account. To check what payment method you used for the original purchase, navigate to the “Purchases” section in the Venmo app, and tap on the individual purchase.
View ArticleIf you received an email that a recent transaction you made from a bank account has failed, you’ll want to login from a computer and head to venmo.com/recover to resolve the issue. Your account will also be temporarily frozen until the funds are paid back.
Bank payments can fail for a number of reasons. While Venmo doesn’t have visibility into the specific reason your transaction failed, your bank should be able to tell you exactly why. Some common reasons for failure are: exceeding the number of ACH transfers permitted on your account, or insufficient funds at the time of the transaction.
The fastest way to get your account reinstated is to use a credit or debit card to pay back the amount. (Any fees from Venmo on negative balance payments using credit cards will be waived.)Paying with your bank is also an option, but keep in mind these payments can take a few days to process. In any case, once Venmo receives the funds, your account will be reinstated.
Please note that if you decide to pay back the amount you owe with a bank account, we’ll show you an estimated date of arrival. The funds will take 3 to 5 business days to post in your Venmo account, so thanks in advance for your patience!
Any payments you receive on your Venmo account will automatically be applied to the amount you owe to Venmo, thereby reducing the amount you owe.
Chargebacks
Chargebacks claimed against Venmo payments usually happen because the cardholder doesn’t recognize the charge, and the amount is refunded.
If there was a chargeback claimed against a payment you made in Venmo from a debit or credit card, you’ll need to visit venmo.com/addfunds to recover the amount. Your account will also be temporarily frozen/suspended until the funds are paid back. If the payment in question was not authorized, please feel free to contact us and we can look into the matter further for you.
Please note: You’ll only be able to use a bank account in this instance. Once the funds have posted in your account, please reach out to us directly and we’ll be glad to lift the frozen status from your account.
View ArticleWhat is an authorization?
When you make a purchase using your Venmo account, the merchant will authorize your account for the amount of your purchase. This is called a merchant authorization, and it allows the merchant to ensure that your Venmo account is open and working. Think of it like a pending charge on a credit card statement - you might notice an amount deducted from your available balance when an authorization is made, but it isn’t fully posted to your statement yet.
What is a merchant capture?
Funds will not be transferred to the merchant until they finalize the transaction and capture the final amount. A merchant capture is the equivalent of finalizing a pending charge on a credit card statement - it causes funds to move from you to the merchant. Once a merchant captures an authorization, you’ll see the purchase finalized in your transaction history in the Purchases tab in your app for the final amount.
Why was the final amount (capture) different than the initial authorization?
There may be a difference between the amount that you see when you initially make a purchase (authorization) and the final capture amount. Think about it this way - when you go out for dinner and receive the check - the restaurant will charge your card (authorization) for an amount that’s higher than your bill total to account for a tip, which will impact your available balance while the authorization is pending. Once you’ve signed and added a tip, the restaurant will capture the final amount a couple of days later and you’ll see that finalized amount reflected on your statement. This final amount may be different from the original authorization amount.
Why is my balance less than expected before the payment is finalized?
If you have access to a Venmo balance, here's what you can expect:
Right after you make a purchase (authorization), all or part of your Venmo balance will be held until the purchase is finalized (captured) by the merchant. If your Venmo balance exceeds the amount of your purchase, your balance will be reduced by the authorized amount to account for this hold. This is to ensure that there are enough funds to cover the purchase once it is finalized. However, if your purchase is for more than what is available in your balance, your entire balance will be held while waiting for the purchase to be captured. This means that your balance may display as $0 until the final purchase amount is captured. Any held balance amounts that exceed the final purchase amount will be made available within 30 days of completion of the transaction.
View ArticleIn order to use Venmo to the fullest, it’s best to verify your phone number and email address as soon as you sign up. Without a verified phone number, you won’t be able to transfer funds to your bank account or send/request payments.
If you’re having trouble verifying your phone number at any point in time, please reach out to your phone carrier (ATT, Verizon, Sprint, etc.) to ensure that you have messaging from short codes enabled.
Verifying your phone number
As soon as you sign up, you’ll see a screen letting you know that a verification code was sent to your phone via text message. This text/SMS will come from a five digit short code (86753), meaning the number will be shorter than a usual telephone number. There are some features (bank transfers and sending payments) that will not be available until your phone number is verified, so be sure to enter this code when prompted in the Venmo app/website to verify your phone number.
If you’re already signed up and your phone number hasn’t been verified yet, there are a couple of ways to get that done
1. If you’re on an iPhone (iOS) you can head to your Settings > Change Phone Number and enter your phone number again. The code will be resent to your phone number.
2. If you're on an Android phone or your phone is unable to receive text messages from short codes, please try logging into Venmo from a different computer with your email address and password. Successfully logging in on a computer using an SMS code will also verify your phone number automatically.
Please be sure to click “Resend Code” if your phone is unable to receive messages from short codes.
You can check out this article if you're not receiving the code to sign in. Still having trouble? Contact us directly and we’d be happy to help out.
Verifying your email address
After you sign up, we’ll send you an email with the subject “Please verify your email address on Venmo” to the email address that you entered. Just click the link in the email to verify ownership of your email address and you’re all set.
Please note that replying directly to this email will not verify your email address.
If you didn’t verify your email address when you signed up, you can head to this link from a computer. Enter your email address and click “Verify”. An email should be sent to you with the link mentioned above.
Always remember to check your spam or junk folder if you’re not seeing the email!
Note: payments sent directly to your email address or phone number will not reach your Venmo account until you’ve verified them.

Do I need to add money to Venmo to pay someone?
Nope! You don’t need to add money to Venmo to make payments.
If you have access to a Venmo balance, any payments you receive from friends will be added to your Venmo balance, and you can use those funds to make payments. If you make a payment for an amount that is equal to or less than the amount in your Venmo balance, it’ll be fully funded by your Venmo balance. If you make a payment for an amount that is greater than the amount in your Venmo balance, it’ll be fully funded by your external payment method (bank account or card). In other words: Individual payments on Venmo are never funded by more than one source. For more information about how Venmo balance works, visit this article.
If you don’t have access to your Venmo balance, you can’t use payments you receive from others to fund your own payments. Any payments you make will be funded by your external payment method (bank account or card). If you’d like to use the money in your Venmo account to make payments, visit this article.
Remember: If you're ever confused about which payment method will be used for a specific payment you're making on Venmo, you can always check the bottom of the screen where you enter all the details of the payment to see which payment method will be used.
It is worth noting, that in some rare cases, there may be a problem processing a payment. If there is a problem processing your payment, a notification will be sent to you and/or the recipient via email, and you may need to choose a different payment method outside of Venmo.
View ArticleWhat's the cash advance fee?
It's the same fee that's charged when using a credit card to withdraw money from an ATM or branch. The interest rate is usually higher than using the credit card for a purchase.
So when you send money to a friend, you may be charged an additional fee based on dollar amount or percentage ratewhichever is higher. In addition, they might charge other cash advance service fees including a higher APR.
Things could add up! Be sure to check with your card issuer on the fees they may charge.
Which credit cards does this impact?
Only cards within the Visa and Mastercard networks.
Why can’t Venmo show the exact value of these fees?
Your credit card issuer decides all of the fee details. This info isn't shared with us when you're sending money. Be sure to check with your card issuer to learn more about the fees they might charge.
How can I avoid this fee?
The easiest way is to just send money with a bank or debit card.
View ArticleWhat is instant transfer? How quickly can I get my transfer?
Instant transfer is a feature that allows Venmo users to transfer the money in their Venmo account to certain bank accounts or eligible Visa and Mastercard debit cards, typically within 30 minutes. A 1\% fee (with a minimum fee of $0.25 and a maximum fee of $10) is deducted from the transfer amount for each transfer. The standard bank transfer (typically completed within 1-3 business days) is still available for no fee.
Please note, transfers are reviewed which may result in delays or funds being frozen or removed from your Venmo account. Learn more here.
What is the difference between instant transfer and standard bank transfer?
There are two ways to get your money out of your Venmo account:
Instant transfer through your eligible bank account or debit card. This type of transfer incurs a 1\% fee (with a minimum fee of $0.25 and a maximum fee of $10) and typically arrives within 30 minutes.
Standard transfer through the ACH network to your verified checking account (which is free but typically arrives 1-3 business days after you request the transfer.)
Please note, transfers are reviewed which may result in delays or funds being frozen or removed from your Venmo account. Learn more here.
I haven’t seen my instant transfer in 30 minutes, what should I do?
When you initiate an instant transfer on Venmo, you will see a green check mark to indicate the transfer has been initiated. When the transfer successfully completes, you’ll receive a notification. If it’s still within 30 minutes and the transfer shows as “Pending” on your feed, hang tight! If you receive a notification that the transfer completed but do not see the money available in your bank account,we recommend reaching out to your bank directly to help locate the transfer.
When contacting your bank about an instant transfer sent to a debit card, it’s important to explain that the money will appear as an original credit transaction (OCT), which is a direct credit to your debit card. This isn’t a missing ACH/direct deposit.
Can I use instant transfer any time or day and still expect to receive my money within 30 minutes?
Yes, instant transfers can be made 24 hours a day, 365 days a year regardless of holiday or weekend schedules, subject to Venmo service disruptions. If you don’t see the transfer on your bank statement after 30 minutes please reach out to your bank.
Please note, transfers are reviewed which may result in delays or funds being frozen or removed from your Venmo account. Learn more here.
Why do standard transfers arrive slower than instant transfers?
Standard bank transfers utilize ACH bank processing, which typically takes 1-3 business days to reach your bank account. Instant transfers are processed through different networks so that the money can reach your bank account much more quickly (typically within 30 minutes).
Please note, transfers are reviewed which may result in delays or money being locked or removed from your Venmo account. Learn more here.
How do I know if I have an eligible card or bank account?
Currently, instant transfer only works with certain bank accounts or eligible Visa or Mastercard debit cards. The best way to determine if your bank account or card is eligible is to add it (if it has not been added). Ineligible bank accounts or debit cards that you have already added from Payment Methods will be displayed, but will be greyed out, and you will not be able to select them for instant transfer. If you have added an eligible bank account or card, then you will be able to select it after initiating a bank transfer.
Why is one of my bank accounts or cards unable to be selected (greyed out) for instant transfer?
This feature is only available for certain bank accounts or U.S. Visa or Mastercard debit cards that participate in either Visa’s Fast Funds service or in the Mastercard send platform. If you are unable to select a debit card on file when attempting to make an instant transfer, then your bank does not currently participate in either service and we would recommend reaching out to the bank that issued your debit card to request that they participate.
I used instant transfer to transfer my money. Where is my money now?
If you are looking for your transfer, it is best to check your bank account balance and/or statement. (Instant transfers sent to aneligible Visa or Mastercard debit card aredeposited to the bank account that is linked to your debit card.) You should typically see the money there within 30 minutes of initiating the instant transfer. If you don’t see the transfer on your bank statement after 30 minutes, please let us know, and we’ll be happy to help with the next steps.
Please note, transfers are reviewed which may result in delays or money being locked or removed from your Venmo account. Learn more here.
Why can’t I transfer less than $0.25?
The fee for Instant Transfer is a 1\% fee (with a minimum fee of $0.25 and a maximum fee of $10) for every transfer you make to your eligible bank account or debit card. This fee is deducted from the transfer amount, therefore you have to transfer more than that amount to account for the fee. If you need to transfer less than $0.25, our Standard Bank Transfer option is still free to use.

Click on the link, “I don’t have access to this phone”, located under the Send Code button.
An alternate way to confirm your identity will be presented on the next screen.
Option 2: There is NO “I don’t have access to this phone” link, or you no longer have the information to confirm your identity.
No worries, we can still help! (Note: it may take a 1-2 days to complete this process).
Please contact our Support team and be sure to include the following information to expedite the process.
Your full name.
Email address and old phone number associated with your Venmo account.
For a bank, the full routing number and last 4 digits of your bank account number. OR, if you’re providing a card, the first 6 digits and last 4 digits of the card number.Pleasedo notprovide the full card number or bank account number for your security.
Once you’re logged in, you can go into the Settings menu on the app or Venmo.com to update your phone number.
View ArticleTo view your complete transaction history or statement, you can log into your Venmo profile from a computer's browser. You can then click “Statement” or click here to view your transaction history. (Please note that you cannot access your statement from a mobile web browser.)
If you would like, we also provide the ability to download your transaction history as a CSV file by clicking the “Download CSV” button next to the date selection.
Note: All of your transaction history can be viewed, but you can only view or download a maximum of 90 days at one time. If you need to see longer than 90 days, you’ll need to search multiple date ranges. For example, if you wanted to download 6 months worth of history, you would select January 1st - March 31st in one file, and another file for April 1st - June 30th.
Similarly, you can also view all the payments you’ve made and received by clicking here or by choosing the personal feed within the app.

View ArticleWhere can I see my payment methods?
In the app, head to “” icon then “Settings” then "Payment Methods," where you should see a list of the bank accounts and cards that you’ve added to your Venmo account.
Can I use a prepaid card or gift card?
We allow credit, debit and prepaid, network branded (e.g. American Express, Discover, MasterCard, Visa) cards registered under your name to be added to Venmo. Cards may be declined by the card issuer or Venmo for funds availability or fraud prevention reasons. Also, some payment cards may require a zip code to be linked to your account.
Some credit card providers charge cash advance fees (possibly including an additional dollar amount or percent rate, in addition to other possible cash advance service fees, including a higher APR) if you use your credit card to make payments to friends on Venmo. For more information about whether your card provider charges these fees, contact your card provider.
Are there fees to use Venmo?
For information about our fees, please visit https://venmo.com/about/fees/
Can I change where my payment is coming from?
Actually, no. The payment method and amount of a payment cannot be changed once it’s been sent. The moment you send a payment in Venmo, the funds are authorized to be withdrawn from your payment method. Sorry about that!If you have access to a Venmo balance and have enough balance to cover the entire cost of the payment, Venmo will use your balance to pay for your payment. Otherwise, Venmo will charge the entire cost of the payment to your preferred payment method.
If you sent a payment using iMessage and it hasn’t been accepted yet, or it went to a “New User,” you will still have the option to cancel the payment. You can read more about that here.
Please see the article on how to update your payment method, so that the correct payment method is debited for next time!
Can a bank account or card be added to two separate Venmo accounts?
If you share ownership of a bank account with another Venmo user, you may both be able to use the bank account on Venmo. We are slowly rolling out a new feature to allow two Venmo users to add the same bank account to each of their Venmo accounts. (Please note that the bank account can only be linked to two Venmo accounts at a time, so any additional users who attempt to add the bank account will be declined.) For more information about joint bank accounts, visit this article.
Each (debit or credit) card can only be linked to one Venmo account at a time.
If you’re unable to add a payment method because it’s already linked to another Venmo account, feel free to contact us. We can help!
Why was my card charged $0/$1 when I added it to Venmo?
Sometimes when people add a card to Venmo, they'll see a small line item on their debit/credit card statement that looks like this:
CHECKCARD XXXX VENMO 646-863-9557 NY 000000000000 $1.00
The amount could also be $0, but it's never larger than $1. This is a temporary authorization that we run on your card to confirm that the details you entered are correct. It's important to note that this is not an actual charge to your card. After we create this authorization, we cancel it so that you can use this money again.
If you still see a $1 authorization from Venmo after 5-7 business days, please contact your bank and ask them to remove it for you. We already attempt to cancel all of these when we create them, and cannot take further action on our end once we do so.
Can I add my PayPal card or PayPal account to Venmo?
Adding your PayPal card or PayPal account to use in your Venmo account is not a feature that is availableat this time. Sorry about that!
View ArticleMoney in your Venmo account is made up of any payments that you’ve received from friends that you have neither spent, sent, nor transferred to your bank account. You can see how much money is in your account by going to your profile page, or by tapping the "" icon at the top of the app.
If you have access to a balance, you can use the money in your account to make payments to friends or mobile websites or apps that are approved to offer Venmo as a payment option.
If you don’t have access to a balance, you can still receive payments on Venmo and transfer the money to a bank account, but you cannot use the money in your account to make payments on Venmo until you verify your identity.
We never split payments between money in your account and preferred payment methods. So, when you make a payment, if you have access to a balance and it covers the entire payment, it will be pulled from your balance. Otherwise, it will be funded by your preferred payment method.
Here’s an example:
Let’s say you have $10 in your Venmo balance and want to pay a friend $12. In this case, the entire $12 would be charged to your preferred payment method.
If you don’t have access to a Venmo balance, but have $10 in your Venmo account, payments you make of any amount will be taken from your preferred payment method until you verify your identity.
How can I determine if I have access to a Venmo balance?
If you’re unsure about whether a Venmo balance is available to you to fund payments, don’t worry! Just tap the “” button, then “Settings,” then “Payment Methods.” If you see a “Venmo Balance” at the top of the screen, that means you have access to the feature. If you don’t see “Venmo Balance,” you’ll need to verify your identity in order to access the feature. In order to do so, visit this article.
View ArticleFor security reasons, Venmo places a limit on the number of cards a user can add to their account. Users can have up to 4 active or deleted cards in their account at any given time over a 6 month rolling period.
The 4 card rolling limit means that once you add a card to Venmo, it will count against your card limit for 6 months, even if you delete it. So, a card applies to this 4 card limit if it is was added fewer than 6 months ago (even if it has since been deleted).
If you are seeing an error message that you've reached the limit, you are likely hitting the rolling limit and will need to wait until it’s been 6 months since you first added a card. At this time, Venmo is not able to increase your limit above 4 cards. Additionally, we (Venmo) may change this limit at any time in our discretion.
View ArticleIn order to send payments directly from your bank account, you’ll need to verify it. We also recommend taking the time to verify your bank account before you transfer funds to avoid any complications.
If you've entered the wrong account information, a couple of things could happen:
Your bank will not be able to find your account and your bank transfer will fail. The money may be returned to us after a few days and put back into your Venmo account, but we cannot guarantee that will happen.
If the bank does not return the transfer, the funds may be lost. Venmo is not responsible for lost transfers as a result of incorrect bank credentials. Your bank will be the best point of contact in this scenario.
There are two ways you can verify your bank account in Venmo:
I. Instant Verification
One way to verify your bank account is by providing the username and password that you use for online banking. Venmo uses Plaid to verify your bank account information and, periodically, your bank account balance to check if you have enough funds to cover certain transactions. If your bank is eligible for instant verification, you will be prompted to add your online banking username and password (or other identifying information) after you have selected your bank.
If you’re having any trouble with this, the best thing to do will be to reach out to your bank. In the meantime, you can always add your bank account manually using your routing and account number combination. Simply select “Manual Verification” instead of “Instant Verification” and you’ll be all set.
II. Microtransfers
When you add your bank account to Venmo manually (with your routing and account number), we'll send microtransfers to your bank account to verify ownership (these will be less than $1 each). When we issue these microtransfers to your account, we issue two small withdrawals and to offset those withdrawals we issue two small deposits simultaneously. To avoid any overdraft or other bank fees make sure you have at least $2 in your bank account.
You'll see these deposits/debits in your bank account within 1-3 business days as separate items on your bank statement. Once you do, you can visit www.venmo.com/verifybank to verify your bank account.
If you’re not seeing the amounts after 3 business days, it’s possible the bank account information may have been entered incorrectly. Please see this article for more information about the next steps.
View ArticleThe moment you send a payment in Venmo, the funds are made available to the recipient. If you sent a payment to another user with a similar name, as a first step, send that user a charge request for the same amount of the payment so they can pay you back.

If you don’t hear back from them or need help sending a charge request, contact our support team and we’ll do our best to help. While we cannot guarantee we’ll be able to help recover the money,if you reach out to us, we can provide any available options.
When you contact us, please be sure to include the following details to expedite the process:
Username of the person that you sent the funds to
Amount of the payment

Username, phone number, and email address of the person that you meant to pay
If you sent the payment to a New User meaning you paid an email address or phone number that isn’t associated with an active Venmo account yet you can go ahead and cancel the payment to take those funds back yourself!
View ArticleWhat is the transaction history email and why am I getting it?
Venmo sends this email to remind our users to check their transaction histories on a regular basis.
If you have been active on Venmo (i.e. made or received a payment, made a purchase, transferred to bank, or received credits/refunds) in the past month, you will receive a notice at the beginning of the following month. Otherwise, you will receive this notice once per quarter at minimum.
Can I unsubscribe or opt out of these emails?
Venmo is required by federal financial regulations to send this notice to you on a regular basis (specifically 205.9.b here ), so unfortunately you cannot unsubscribe. We apologize for the inconvenience.
If you close your Venmo account, you’ll still receive one final transaction history email to the email address on file with your Venmo account.
But what about the CAN-SPAM act? Can't I unsubscribe from any email?
The CAN-SPAM Act only requires businesses to provide an unsubscribe link for commercial email, which is explicitly advertising or promotional. Some of our emails are transactional and required for Venmo to fulfill its responsibilities as a federally regulated money transmitter. You can learn more about CAN-SPAM at ftc.gov.

Can I cancel my transfer to my Venmo balance?
A transfer to your Venmo balance cannot be cancelled once it is initiated. It is important to note that the Venmo Support team is also unable to cancel transfers to your Venmo balance. If you change your mind after initiating a transfer to your Venmo balance, you can transfer it back to your bank once it completes.
What if the transfer to my Venmo balance fails?
Transfers can fail for a variety of reasons. If your transfer to your Venmo balance fails, you will be notified via email, and the funds will not move from your bank to your Venmo balance.
Why don’t I see the ability to add money in my Venmo app?
At this time, only users who have applied for and received a Venmo card have the ability to add money to their Venmo balance manually. If you’d like more information about applying for a Venmo card, click here. Keep in mind that you don’t need to add money to your Venmo balance to pay friends or businesses in the app.
*Are there any limits to how much money I can add to my Venmo balance?
There is a $1,500.00 weekly rolling limit on transferring funds into your Venmo balance. A transaction counts against your weekly rolling limit for exactly one week following the time of the transaction. So, for example, if you add money to your Venmo balance on a Monday at 11 AM, then at exactly 11:01 AM the following Monday, that transaction will no longer count against your limit. View ArticleCan you cancel my payment?
Unfortunately no - the moment you send a payment in Venmo, we send a request to your bank/card company to debit the funds and make them available to your friend. Sorry about that!
If you want your friend to pay you back, simply have them send you a payment for the same amount.
Please note: if your payment feed indicates you sent your payment to a new user, you can follow the instructions here to cancel that payment. You’ll also be able to cancel any iMessage payments that you’ve sent and have not been redeemed using the same instructions.

My payment says it went to a “New User” - what does that mean?

My friend paid me on the wrong email address, can I add it to my Venmo account?
If your friend sent you a payment to an email address that’s different from the one you signed up with, you can add and verify that email address to receive the payment here. This email address will be added in addition to the email address that you signed up with, meaning you’ll be able to receive payments sent directly to both email addresses. To login to your Venmo account, you’ll continue to use the email address that you signed up with and originally associated with your account. Please note that this can only be accomplished from a computer.
Once you’ve verified the email address, the payment (and any future payments sent there) should come through to your Venmo account successfully!

Although Venmo is a service of PayPal, Inc. we do not offer the ability to transfer funds between Venmo and PayPal accounts at this time.
Can I use Venmo to pay myself or move money between two of my own payment methods?
Venmo is intended only for payments between separate individuals rather than moving money between your own payment methods. Additionally, users are only allowed to maintain one Venmo account at a time.
Can I use Venmo to buy or sell merchandise, goods, or services?
You may only use Venmo to pay for goods or services using a Venmo card at merchants that accept the card or through mobile websites or apps that are approved to offer Venmo as a payment option. If available, the option to pay using Venmo will appear as a Venmo-branded payment button at checkout or, in some cases, may appear after you first select PayPal as your payment method.
Venmo may not otherwise be used to receive business, commercial or merchant transactions, meaning you CANNOT use Venmo to accept payment from (or send payment to) another user for a good or service.
DO NOT USE VENMO TO TRANSACT WITH PEOPLE YOU DON’T PERSONALLY KNOW, ESPECIALLY IF THE TRANSACTION INVOLVES THE PURCHASE OR SALE OF A GOOD OR SERVICE (for example, concert tickets, electronic equipment, sneakers, a watch, or other merchandise). These transactions are potentially high risk, are not allowed under Venmo’s User Agreement and Venmo does not offer a protection program for such transactions. This means:
If you send a Venmo payment to someone for a good or service, you could lose your money without ever getting what you paid for.
If you accept a Venmo payment from someone for a good or service and we later review the payment, we may reverse the payment, meaning you could lose both the payment and the item sold. This review process may not occur until after you attempt to transfer the funds out of Venmo.
If you would like to know more, please see this article here. If you want to know more about making purchases from authorized merchants with Venmo, please see this article for the details.
View ArticleWe review account and transaction activity at various times, including when you initiate a transfer of funds out of Venmo. We may use proprietary fraud and risk modeling when completing this review and assessing the risk associated with your Venmo account. This review checks for, among other things, suspicious or illegal activity, and whether your account activity and the activity of users with whom you’ve transacted comply with the Venmo User Agreement.
Review may result in:
delayed, blocked or canceled transfers;
funds being held by Venmo;
funds being applied to a negative Venmo account balance or used to offset loss incurred by Venmo;
account suspension or termination;
funds being seized to comply with a court order, warrant or other legal process; and/or
funds you previously received being reversed (i.e., sent back to the sender’s Venmo account or to the card or bank account that was used to fund the payment).
Among other reasons, we may take the above actions if you knowingly or unknowingly received a payment that was made from a stolen card, compromised bank account, or compromised Venmo account, or if you conducted a prohibited transaction, such as using Venmo to transact with another user who is not an authorized merchant and who you do not personally know for good or services (for example, concert tickets, electronic equipment, sneakers, a watch, or other merchandise).
In connection with our review process, you may be required to provide us with additional information and/or documentation to verify your identity. We may limit your account and your access to funds in it until verification is completed.
View ArticleWhy do I need to confirm my identity on sign-in?
Have you ever used the same password for Venmo and another app? Hackers can steal your Venmo password from the database of another company. Confirming your identity when signing in from a new device adds an additional layer of security.
How do I confirm my identity?
When you sign in from a device we don’t recognize as yours, a code is sent to the phone number registered with your Venmo account. Entering this code correctly confirms your identity. Never share this code with anyone else. Nobody at Venmo will ever contact you to request this code.
Alternately, you may confirm your identity by verifying financial information if you have a bank or card linked to your Venmo account. Please note that this backup option is not available for all users.
After successfully signing in, you may grant Venmo permission to remember the device. You won’t need a code to confirm your identity when signing in from that device in the future. You will still need to enter your password correctly.
Can I control what devices Venmo recognizes as mine?
Yes. In your settings, there is a list of “ Remembered Devices ” that you can edit.
If you notice a phone that isn’t yours in my Remembered Devices list, we recommend removing any devices that look suspicious. Anyone signing in from that device will need to pass the security code challenge.
We also encourage you to change your password to maximize your security.
More information about Venmo’s security can be found here.

How do I use Venmo as a payment option in the Uber Rides or Eats Apps?
First, make sure you have the most up to date version of the Uber Rides or Eats Apps as you will need to update your payment method to Venmo in those apps specifically. If you are having any trouble updating it, please see Uber’s Help Center about updating payment methods.
I heard there are custom emojis, how can I get these custom emojis? here
Just use Venmo as your payment option and then split or share your purchase in Venmo! The emojis will appear when you tap on the emoji button in the compose screen or type Uber in your payment note. If you aren’t seeing them, make sure you’ve updated to the most recent version of the Venmo app.
Why is my Uber charge different than I expected?
Once you request a ride, you will see a push notification from Venmo with the estimated cost. The charge will be pending in your Venmo feed and Purchases list. This amount is authorized and held until the final charge is complete. In some cases, your Uber fare may be adjusted for any factors that extend the distance or duration of your ride. The final price may also be adjusted due to a tip you added after your ride.
If you have any questions about the amount you were charged, please reach out to Uber for assistance. You can find more information at https://help.uber.com/ or click “Help” in the side menu of your Uber app. It’s also helpful to check your email for an updated receipt from Uber--you can find specific adjustments in the comment box.
Why did I get a push notification for a purchase when I requested an Uber ride? / I received a push notification for my Uber ride and I canceled it - was I charged?
Moments after you request a ride, you will receive a Venmo push notification showing the estimated charge from Uber. This represents an authorization: a pending charge that is used to make sure Uber will be able to charge your Venmo account.During this time, funds will be held from your payment method.
If you happen to cancel your ride, Uber will void the authorization and any held funds will be released back to your payment method. The canceled charge will no longer be displayed in your Venmo feed or Purchases list. If you have any other questions about your ride, please reach out to Uber at https://help.uber.com/ or click “Help” in the side menu of your Uber app.
“Why is there a pending $1 charge from Uber on my Venmo account?”
Uber places a temporary $1.00 authorization on any payment method added to their app to verify that the payment method is valid. The charge to your Venmo account should not be completed. You can read more about this practice .

You can earn cash back by making eligible Venmo card purchases at select merchants. Current merchant offers are shown in the Venmo Card section of your app. A pending purchase will show estimated Rewards in your feed, but the amount is not disbursed to your Venmo balance until the charge is completed by the merchant. Once the transaction is complete, any earned cash back will be applied to your Venmo account.

When will I receive my cash back?
A pending purchase will show your estimated cash back earned in your feed, but the amount is not final until the charge is completed by the merchant. Venmo Rewards is powered by Dosh. When you make a transaction with your Venmo debit card, Dosh checks to see if it is eligible for a cash back reward. If the transaction is eligible for a reward, Dosh will send cash back to your Venmo balance minutes after the merchant completes the charge.
What information do you share with Dosh?
Venmo and Dosh respect your privacy and take precautions to ensure the security of your data. Venmo shares the minimum amount of data necessary to facilitate cash back fulfillment.
For more information on Dosh’s privacy policy, view the terms of service here. You can also check out Venmo’s privacy policy here.
Why can’t I add my Venmo Card to Dosh?
Venmo debit cardholders are automatically enrolled in Venmo Rewards powered by Dosh. Because you’ll already be eligible for Rewards via Venmo, you will not be able to add any Venmo debit cards to Dosh’s platform.
Missing cash back? We can help
If you believe you are missing cash back for an offer, we can double-check it for you.
First, make sure that the transaction in question is completed, and not pending. Pending transactions will show at the top of your Purchases section in the Venmo app. If your transaction is still pending, you’ll need to wait until it is completed by the merchant before you can receive any cash back.
If the transaction in question is completed, please contact us for help.

View ArticleVenmo is designed for payments between friends and people who know and trust one another.
You may use Venmo to pay for goods or services using a Venmo card at merchants that accept the card or through mobile websites or apps that are approved to offer Venmo as a payment option. If available, the option to pay using Venmo will appear as a Venmo-branded payment button at checkout or, in some cases, may appear after you first select PayPal as your payment method. Additionally, you may use Venmo to pay for goods and services when directly given the option to do so by Venmo.
Venmo may NOT otherwise be used to receive business, commercial or merchant transactions, meaning you CANNOT use Venmo to accept payment from (or send payment to) another user for a good or service.
Unless directly given the option by Venmo, DO NOT USE VENMO TO TRANSACT WITH PEOPLE YOU DON’T PERSONALLY KNOW, ESPECIALLY IF THE TRANSACTION INVOLVES THE PURCHASE OR SALE OF A GOOD OR SERVICE (for example, concert tickets, electronic equipment, sneakers, a watch, or other merchandise). These transactions are potentially high risk, are not allowed under Venmo’s User Agreement, and Venmo does not have a protection program for such transactions unless directly offered. So:
If you send a Venmo payment to someone for a good or service, you could lose your money without ever getting what you paid for.
If you accept a Venmo payment from someone for a good or service and we later review the payment, we may reverse the payment, meaning you could lose both the payment and the item sold. This review process may not occur until after you attempt to transfer the funds out of Venmo.
Thank you for your cooperation!
View ArticleOnce you make a payment to a registered user the funds are sent to the recipient’s Venmo account. At this time, it’s not possible to cancel a payment that’s been sent to a registered user in Venmo. If your payment indicates you paid a “New User,” check out this article for info on how to cancel - otherwise:
If you want your friend to pay you back, simply have them send you a payment for the same amount.
Only in instances when the funds are still in Venmo’s system and the recipient's account is in good standing, can we reverse the funds with the recipient’s permission. If the recipient still sees the funds available in their Venmo account, please have them reach out to us directly authorizing a reversal and we would be happy to take care of the rest.
It is worth noting, that in some rare cases, there may be a problem processing a payment. If we identify an issue, funds may not be available to the recipient right away and may cause a bank transfer to be delayed or blocked or for funds to be frozen or removed from your account. If there is a problem processing your payment, a notification will be sent to you and/or the recipient via email, and you may need to choose a different payment method outside of Venmo.
If you’re looking to cancel a payment that you sent to the wrong person, please see this article for further details and instructions.

View ArticleAdding friends is an important part of the Venmo experience. While you don’t have to be friends with someone on Venmo to pay them, it helps ensure that your payments are going to the right place (and helps your friends find you)!
Phone contacts
When you sign up for Venmo (or right before you use a feature for the first time), you’ll be asked to grant Venmo permission to access the contacts on your phone. If you allow access, we’ll look for any friends that are already on Venmo and automatically add them to your friend list (and you’ll be added to theirs).
Another option for adding friends is to link Venmo to your Facebook account. If you connect your Facebook account to Venmo, we’ll access your friend list (along with your email address, profile picture and public profile) to automatically add friends as well.
You can also choose to add friends manually by searching for their username or name in your search bar, open up their profile and add them as a friend.
Venmo codes (QR codes)
If you're face to face with someone you want to add, open the Venmo code scanner in the app and point it at the code on their screen. Once their code is centered it will take you straight to their profile page- no need to click! If someone sends you a code just click on the link and it will bring you right into the Venmo app on their profile page.
Removing friends
To remove a friend on Venmo (from the app or web), all you need to do is navigate to your friend’s Venmo profile. On the web, you’ll see a “Remove friend” option on the right side of the page. In the app, simply tap the “Friends” checkmark > Unfriendand you’re all set!

You can also manually cancel the payment before it is accepted by going to Incomplete in the Venmo app menu. Canceling the payment will return the funds to your funding source (not stop the original withdrawal from happening). A payment sent in iMessage cannot be canceled once the recipient has accepted it.
If you sent the funds using your Venmo balance, the funds will be returned there the moment the payment is canceled. If you used a bank account to fund the payment, please note that it will take 3 to 5 business days for the funds to be returned. If the payment was funded by a credit or debit card, the payment will be returned to that card. It may take up to thirty (30) days for the returned payment to be applied by your card issuer. You can contact them directly for specific timeframes.

Go to Incomplete in the Venmo app menu and you should have the option to cancel any pending payments there
If you are on iOS 10 or a desktop, you can open the iMessage payment bubble in the conversation and tap Incomplete Payments (this will take you to the Venmo app to cancel the payment)

If you choose to add your bank account manually, do not enter the check number that appears after your account number. This can cause transfers to fail or be rejected by your bank.Additionally, when you add your bank account to Venmo manually, we'll send microtransfers to your bank account to verify ownership (these will each be $1 or less). To avoid any overdraft or other bank fees make sure you have at least $2 in your bank account.
