Executive Bio

Ms. Debra L. Lee has been the Chairman of BET Holdings, LLC since January 2006 and has been its Chief Executive Officer since June 2, 2005. Ms. Lee has been the Chief Executive Officer of Black Entertainment Television LLC since June 2, 2005 and serves as its Chairman. She serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of BET Networks. She serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Bet Interactive, LLC. She served as the Chief Operating Officer and President of Black Entertainment Television LLC since 1996. She served as President of BET Holdings, LLC since March 1996 and an Executive Vice President since September 1992. She served as Secretary of BET Holdings, LLC from July 1991 to May 1997 and its Chief Operating Officer from March 1996 to June 2005. From September 1991 to September 1992, she served as also Vice President of Bet Holdings Inc. She joined BET Holdings, LLC in April 1986 as Vice President and General Counsel. In 1992, she was elected Executive Vice President of Legal Affairs and named Publisher of BET's magazine division. She was placed in charge of strategic business development in 1995. Prior to joining BET, she spent five years as an Attorney with Washington, D.C.-based Steptoe & Johnson. From August 1980 to September 1981, she served as a Law Clerk to the late Honorable Barrington Parker of the U. S. District Court for the District of Columbia. She served as the Chairman of The Advertising Council, Inc. from October 2013 to July 2014 and served as its Vice Chairman until October 2012. She has been a Director of The Advertising Council, Inc. since 2013. She has been a Director of Washington Gas Light Company since July 2000, Twitter, Inc. since May 16, 2016 and WGL Holdings Inc. since November 2000. She has been an Independent Director of Marriott International, Inc. since June 2004. She serves as a Trustee of The Paley Center for Media. She serves as a Director of National Cable & Telecommunications Association, Bet Holdings, LLC., Girls Inc., the Telecommunications Development Fund and the National Cable Television Association. As a recognized leader in the telecommunications industry, She was a recipient of the 2003, Vanguard Award from the National Cable & Telecommunications Association; 2003 Positively Visionary Award from Cable Positive; 2003 Quasar Award from the National Association of Minorities in Communications; 2000 Tower of Power Trumpet Award from Turner Broadcasting System; and the Silver Star Award from American Women in Radio and Television. She won the 2001 Woman of the Year Award from Women in Cable and Telecommunications, the Wonder Woman Award from Cablevision Magazine and was named one of the 100 Most Powerful Women in Washington, DC by Washingtonian Magazine and one of the cable television industry's 'Hundred Heavy Hitters' by Cable Fax Magazine. Ms. Lee holds a BA in Political Science from Brown University, an MPP from the John F. Kennedy School of Government and a J.D. and MA from Harvard University.
