Q&A With HealthStream Employees

HealthStream employees, or HealthStreamers, are united through our company's vision statement to "improve the quality of healthcare by assessing and developing the people that deliver care." We take pride in bringing this vision to life as we work collectively to achieve business objectives and strive personally to grow as individuals.  We participate in exciting and challenging, team-driven projects that span various departments. Working here, you will find opportunity and responsibility at your fingertips.

How employees describe working at HealthStream

Customers and colleagues are great. As a public company, we must always chase higher profits, to the detriment of R&D and existing products. Product portfolio is expansive yet constantly growing/changing.

I’m frustrated by poor management and lack of respect. Also, misinformation spread instead of help given is gross.

Fair compensation and health benefits that are less like penalties.

HealthStream has been a good company to call home for many years. However the culture of the company has started to change over the last few years and it is no longer a place i can see myself staying for much longer.

Challenging, often rewarding, always hoping, and often stressful. I took a large pay cut to come to the company because I wanted a smaller company and to have my own team. I've gotten those things but was not allowed to grow my own team (I inherited a team that was not qualified). Challenging.

Lots of employees move around within HealthStream, actually! It's a company that really retains employees because of it's strong culture. The process usually happens organically by simply knowing a leader of another team, or by applying internally.

  • Meilleure réponse des employés

    Truth is, its extremely difficult.

  • I've submitted for three roles that I've held at a previous companies in my career. They are all the same title, but I was given three completely different and contradictory reasons I was not considered for the role. For some reason previous experience only matters when you're initially hired, after that it's only your HealthStream experience matters.

  • HealthStream has a really terrible internal promotion/transfer policy. It's well known that if you make a $50k salary in your current position but are promoted to an $85k salary position then HealthStream will only pay you $60k... even though they would pay $85k salary to someone from the streets.... they take advantage of good employees that are qualified to be promoted/transferred. Then when the person realizes they are being vastly underpaid, they find a new job and quit. This happens over and over again. The executive team can't seem to grasp why this is a terrible policy and refuse to fix it.

I haven't received a promotion since being here for 7 years, so in my opinion difficult, but in observing others, they make it look easy!

  • It's impossible. Someone has to leave or a new position created. Promotions are only given during restructurings, and only to senior management.

  • Extremely. There is no clear path for promotion unless you a carbon copy of one of the managers. Positions are filled before they are posted to make sure "right person" is chosen.

The Culture makes me prideful to work here. Everybody is very genuine, and everybody wants to see you succeed. People go above and beyond to help. It is not a competitive environment internally, but more of a nurturing and collaborative environment.

  • my co-workers

  • The belief that what I do truly has an impact on improving healthcare, and saving lives.

  • I truly believe the culture at HealthStream is set up for you to succeed, feel empowered and excited to come to work each day. How to cool to have options of working remote and being on the cutting edge of product in the market. Additionally having majority of the market share. That should speak volumes to your job security. Love being a part of the team and our Exec team is out of the world cool!!

HealthStream does not pay well. It's well below the market average

  • Way under market rate. High turnover due to employees constantly leaving. Lots of knowledge is lost in the process and leadership is too stubborn to raise salaries.

  • The company is not very innovative. Usually the last to make it to market and takes forever to make decisions

  • Depends what type of innovation you're asking about. The company is innovative as far as it's product offerings, however is one of the least innovative companies I've worked for as far as being an employer.

  • Healthstream has been very innovative, but most notably these innovations have been happening only recently (past 5 years).

  • Onboarding is not good. Sure there are a lot of steps and checklists, but you are expected to figure most things out on your own.

  • My onboarding process was very helpful for learning the very broad strokes of the company, and also the did a good job of acclimating me to the team, but there is a lot of knowledge about the products that we work on that I'm still just hearing about or learning about a couple of years into my tenure here.

  • Onboarding process was pretty quick for me. I got acclimated within a day.

  • I wish I knew how inexperienced their leadership team is and how little they value their employees

  • I would have checked the reviews from various review sites. It would have set more realistic expectations than just listening to all the positives they sell you during your interview.

  • That the technology used was not really new. At the time (now they have upgraded) - they were using old technology.

  • The HealthCare benefits are absolutely terrible. For a family with young children, the cost is out of this world and feels criminal. We have had to skip seeking care because the cost is out of reach, even in network. If you were hoping for a great healthcare benefit plan that is affordable, keep looking because it isn't here.

  • awful

  • could be better, for a healthcare company they are really at a high cost to the employee.

  • They just changed it and called it a benefit. However, they really took away time. Managers don't like for you to take PTO and expect you to work on your time off. They ask why you are taking PTO to determine if they will approve it or not.

  • It varies on which location you are based at. If you're in Nashville you get a generous PTO balance that is available in full for use at the beginning of the year. Outside of Nashville you'll accrue your PTO on a monthly basis and can only carry over 40 hours from year to year.

  • PTO is accrued according to your amount of time at the company. Very flexible on use of PTO.
