How employees describe working at HealthStream
Customers and colleagues are great. As a public company, we must always chase higher profits, to the detriment of R&D and existing products. Product portfolio is expansive yet constantly growing/changing.
I’m frustrated by poor management and lack of respect. Also, misinformation spread instead of help given is gross.
Fair compensation and health benefits that are less like penalties.
HealthStream has been a good company to call home for many years. However the culture of the company has started to change over the last few years and it is no longer a place i can see myself staying for much longer.
Challenging, often rewarding, always hoping, and often stressful. I took a large pay cut to come to the company because I wanted a smaller company and to have my own team. I've gotten those things but was not allowed to grow my own team (I inherited a team that was not qualified). Challenging.

Know someone who works there
What's going wrong and how can it be improved at HealthStream?
I want to build my own company.
Executive team has not been listening to the teammates when they provide feedback. The 401k, PTO, Maternity leave, pay, and benefits across the board have been scrutinized by employees for years with no sympathy from leadership. Recently maternity leave was increased from 40 hrs of paid time (yeah you read that right) to 6 weeks, so the company had a chance to give a noteworthy maternity leave benefit and instead went with 6 weeks. PTO was recently revamped as well but only for the employees in the Nashville office.
How's the feedback process at HealthStream?
Not great
How long do the interviews usually take at HealthStream?
Can be a few weeks
If you could make changes, how would you improve the culture at HealthStream?
I would hire more programmers and shift to become a more obviously technology company. I would also dig much more deeply into DEI.
What are the differences between maternity and paternity leave at HealthStream?
None, except during my wife's pregnancy, I was expected by my manager to return without having taken my paternity leave. I used PTO for the one week during which my wife was in labor and returned to work the very next week, albeit virtually.
What's the vibe like in the Communications dept at HealthStream? How many hours are you working?
In the past, it would be a typical "nine-hour day" at work, with frequent opportunities for rest or refocusing. Now, in the work-from-home environment, it's often nine hours straight with little time for a break. When at the office, I'd often load the dishwasher for our area. Now, working from home, I barely have time to do even that in a day.
How are the career growth opportunities on the Design team at HealthStream?
The career growth paths are often unclear.
