How employees describe working at Bloomingdale's

The Employee discount is good when we have employee appreciation

The most positive about this company is that I get to interact with the customers.

I love the support that I recieve from my supervisors and the company as a whole. There is also a great culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion at Bloomingdale's, and that is why I love working there.

The experience at Bloomingdales is a nightmare. Employees bully each other and management does nothing to stop it. In fact, they encourage a sense of "competition" and they consider bullying simple competition. Management is often dismissive and lacks knowledge about policy or proceedure.

The only good thing is some of the co workers ive met at the flagship. We've had really good employees come but they rarely stay long since its so disfunctional. We have had the store hire mentally ill people and an actual convicted child predator so this made things very uncomfortable for us.

Q&A With Bloomingdale's Employees

  • Promotions are given to a person who knows how to talk to seniors and brown nosing. It’s not given to the person with experience background. The store is desperate to fill the position, they will promote anyone who doesn’t know what they are doing. Teach them later or learn as you go. I noticed assistances of the department is not needed. Department managers don’t want to do the chore it will pass it to the assistants. Assistants will pass the work to their associates. Store makes poor choices, over paid assistants. Operation assistants not moneys worth.

  • Most promotions are anniversaried (meaning the same promos are repeated year to year). If a promotion is not doing well online there is a mad scramble by teams to respond.

  • Vacations are hard to get off from Request. It is accumulated by year and hours. Every time I request in my department there is an excuse of projects needed to get done. Every month there is a sale and projects. It is hard to get a vacation when I need it. Life and work balance is hard at Bloomingdales. Employees are burned out and unhappy.

  • It used to be really good. New management is allowing only one week of vacation per quarter even though you get 15-25 days. Sick days are unlimited.

Life and disability Insurance. Some positions are bonus eligible, but not all. Senior positions earn equity.

  • Not really - with total company performance being poor, the stock price plummeting by 40% over the past year and rumors of Bloomingdale's being a bought or Macy's taking over common departments like Marketing and Technology, there is not a great feeling of job security. There have been layoffs and voluntary separation packages for the past two years.

  • There is a personality test administered so if you can pass that (it is part cognitive and part Meyers/Briggs) and present as professional in interaction and appearance (I would suggest business formal for the interview) then you should be able to be hired. If you are in tech, then be prepared to write pseudocode, if you are in Product, you will have an assignment in addition to the above.

  • Low, low, low. And that's across the board regardless of what department you work in. Almost all of the VP-level leadership across buying, creative, and tech has left over the past year. It feels like a sinking ship that Macy's will either sell or integrate into the larger brand.

  • The Product team shares resources and funding with their sister brand, Macys.com so there is a lot of tension between the brands because they compete for resources and the Bloomingdale's team frequently is the loser. The Product leadership does not empower the team to make strategic decisions and the decisions they make are constantly scrutinized by leadership - they are purely executors of the requirements handed to them by stakeholders and Product leadership. This becomes frustrating because there is no development of skillset. so there is little career growth or growth of Product skillset. Career training is non-existent.
