How employees describe working at Bloomingdale's
The experience at Bloomingdales is a nightmare. Employees bully each other and management does nothing to stop it. In fact, they encourage a sense of "competition" and they consider bullying simple competition. Management is often dismissive and lacks knowledge about policy or proceedure.
The only good thing is some of the co workers ive met at the flagship. We've had really good employees come but they rarely stay long since its so disfunctional. We have had the store hire mentally ill people and an actual convicted child predator so this made things very uncomfortable for us.

How does Bloomingdale's make decisions around promotions?
Promotions are given to a person who knows how to talk to seniors and brown nosing. It’s not given to the person with experience background. The store is desperate to fill the position, they will promote anyone who doesn’t know what they are doing. Teach them later or learn as you go. I noticed assistances of the department is not needed. Department managers don’t want to do the chore it will pass it to the assistants. Assistants will pass the work to their associates. Store makes poor choices, over paid assistants. Operation assistants not moneys worth.
Most promotions are anniversaried (meaning the same promos are repeated year to year). If a promotion is not doing well online there is a mad scramble by teams to respond.
How's the vacation policy at Bloomingdale's?
Vacations are hard to get off from Request. It is accumulated by year and hours. Every time I request in my department there is an excuse of projects needed to get done. Every month there is a sale and projects. It is hard to get a vacation when I need it. Life and work balance is hard at Bloomingdales. Employees are burned out and unhappy.
It used to be really good. New management is allowing only one week of vacation per quarter even though you get 15-25 days. Sick days are unlimited.
How much and how often do raises happen at Bloomingdale's?
Raises are annual based on the store sales. Ten cents to twenty five cents per year.
Raises have been either small (1%) or non-existent. Bonuses are also small (less than 1% of salary) or non-existent for the past 3 years.
What are you most excited about working at Bloomingdale's?
Employees discounts are great. Especially when they give us the double discount days.
What benefits does Bloomingdale's provide?
401K match up to 6%, health insurance (you have to be there 90 days to qualify) which is pretty expensive - most married employees go on their spouse's insurance because it is usually better and cheaper. Life and disability Insurance. Some positions are bonus eligible, but not all. Senior positions earn equity.
What's the best part of your job at Bloomingdale's?
Working with my team and my co-workers. They are really great people!
How secure do you feel at your job at Bloomingdale's?
Not really - with total company performance being poor, the stock price plummeting by 40% over the past year and rumors of Bloomingdale's being a bought or Macy's taking over common departments like Marketing and Technology, there is not a great feeling of job security. There have been layoffs and voluntary separation packages for the past two years.
How can I improve my chances of being hired at Bloomingdale's?
There is a personality test administered so if you can pass that (it is part cognitive and part Meyers/Briggs) and present as professional in interaction and appearance (I would suggest business formal for the interview) then you should be able to be hired. If you are in tech, then be prepared to write pseudocode, if you are in Product, you will have an assignment in addition to the above.
What kind of people succeed at Bloomingdale's?
If you are OK with decisions being made for you, do not challenge management and are looking for stability, then this is the place for you.
How's the feedback proccess at Bloomingdale's?
There is an engagement survey every year but no significant change comes from it. The 2017 survey results were the lowest in the past 10 years.
How do you feel about going to work at Bloomingdale's everyday?
Top Employee Response
I dread going to work every day and in speaking to co-workers, they feel the same way. People are actively looking for jobs.
How difficult is it to maintain a social life while in your job at Bloomingdale's?
It depends, For some roles, there is work/life balance - Marketing, Buying/Planning are examples. For others, they are working 12 hour days and are also working nights and weekends - Store Operations, Technology, Digital Operations are examples.
How challenged are you at Bloomingdale's?
Not really. There is no empowerment and you are constantly micromanaged.
What are the team outings like at Bloomingdale's?
When they happen they are really good. The holiday party is either downtown in Battery Gardens or the Copacabana and they really try to make it festive. Management usually comes out of pocket for other team events and tries their best to make it fun.
What's one thing you wish you'd known before joining Bloomingdale's?
The lack of support for Digital and the adversarial environment leadership condones between the stores and online, even though digital is growing significantly faster. It's hard to be in Digital when the management doesn't believe in it and provides no support.
How's the morale at Bloomingdale's?
Low, low, low. And that's across the board regardless of what department you work in. Almost all of the VP-level leadership across buying, creative, and tech has left over the past year. It feels like a sinking ship that Macy's will either sell or integrate into the larger brand.
How much diversity is there among employees at Bloomingdale's?
The tech and product teams are the most diverse groups at Bloomingdale's but the company has been trying to improve diversity in other departments.
What's the office layout like at Bloomingdale's?
Most floors have been remodeled with an open-concept layout and glass offices on the perimeter. The technology and creative floors have not been remodeled and look like they are from the 1970's. There is a vermin problem on those floors as well.
What unique perks and benefits does Bloomingdale's provide?
Employee-only sample sales, and 20-60% discounts on merchandise, depending on the time of year and department. You can get a good deal on a past-season Chanel bag.

You are paid 20% lower than your Macys.com counterparts and 30% lower than the industry.
What's the vibe like in the Product dept at Bloomingdale's? How many hours are you working?
New management doesn't support work/life balance. You are expected to be available at all times, even on the weekends and on vacation. Management never takes vacation and looks down on the team when we take vacation or "too many" sick days.
What's the Product team like at Bloomingdale's?
The Product Managers are honest, collaborative and have an extremely high work ethic.
How's the leadership on the Product team at Bloomingdale's?
The Product team shares resources and funding with their sister brand, Macys.com so there is a lot of tension between the brands because they compete for resources and the Bloomingdale's team frequently is the loser. The Product leadership does not empower the team to make strategic decisions and the decisions they make are constantly scrutinized by leadership - they are purely executors of the requirements handed to them by stakeholders and Product leadership. This becomes frustrating because there is no development of skillset. so there is little career growth or growth of Product skillset. Career training is non-existent.
Why do you feel undervalued and what would make you feel better about your compensation at Bloomingdale's?

Paid under market value and terrible raises
