15 Companies Prioritizing Work-Life Balance

Work-life balance hasn’t always been a given over the history of humans working for their livelihoods, or even the last century. But enormous strides have been made over the last twenty years in making sure that such an alarmingly obvious truth – that an employee needs to be given consideration and space for tending to their personal lives – isn’t missed on leadership anywhere.

Enter 2020. Things got more complicated this year, with the COVID-19 pandemic forcing concepts of work-life balance to be intensely reworked, rethought, and reconsidered in the wake of the necessary move to largely remote workforces for many companies.

Now, making sure employees can separate work from the rest of life has become even more precious  a balance to maintain for companies and their workforces across the U.S. and the rest of the world. Here are 15 companies that hold the concept of work-life balance central to their operations, and are still doing so as we close in on the end of 2020 once and for all.

What does work-life balance mean to TaskUs and why is it important?

At TaskUs, work-life balance is not just about finding a great job; it is also about setting personal goals, integrating wellness into one’s daily routine, and making time for the things that matter––whether that’s spending quality time with loved ones or pursuing one’s passions and purpose.

How does your company promote work-life balance, and has anything changed as a result of a shift to a remote-first plan?

Work-life balance has always been part of TaskUs’s culture and commitment even prior to shifting to remote work. TaskUs offices are creatively designed to allow the integration of collaborative work, social interactions, and rest––complete with in-house facilities including gyms, daycare centers, meditation areas, gaming rooms, and sleeping pods. TaskUs sites are also strategically located near residential areas where employees live to lessen the time wasted from long commutes and spend more time actually living. As a result of the work-from-home setup, living and working in the same space has been challenging for everyone. TaskUs made the following commitments to ensure work-life balance even when working at home:

  • No meeting Fridays – TaskUs announced a policy to keep Fridays free from meetings to allow everyone to finish tasks before the weekend.
  • No Chat Weekends – Sending emails and chats over the weekend is discouraged to allow colleagues not to worry about work on their rest days. Only time-sensitive communications are allowed to be sent out.
  • Taking Time Offs – TaskUs provides paid time offs to all employees at every level of the organization. Employees are asked to respect personal time-offs, and TaskUs requires its leaders to model this behavior.

What does work-life balance mean to your company and why is it important?

Work-life balance at Vena means acknowledging the fact that our employees have rich personal lives outside of work. It’s important that our team is physically and mentally recharged so they can continue to be high performers. This balance is not always easy to achieve, but the leaders at Vena understand how critical it is to address and continue to improve on this measure.

Balance may also mean flexibility in work hours and not the traditional 9-5 or 8 hours a day work set up.

How does Vena Solutions promote work-life balance, and has anything changed as a result of the pandemic?

During the pandemic, Vena has launched initiatives to encourage mindfulness and connection amongst our employees including virtual yoga sessions and health & wellness seminars.

We’ve also encouraged people leaders to work within their team on an individual basis to address each employee’s unique needs and circumstances—there is no one-size-fits-all solution.  We’ve launched new surveys in response to COVID-19 to get a pulse on how employees are doing to ensure that we have the data needed to help those who may be struggling with work/life balance at this time.

What does work-life balance mean to your company and why is it important?

Here at PACE, we don’t want our employees to be in conflict over work and life – life should always come first. We understand that employees have priorities and responsibilities outside of work and are more than happy to make arrangements around these needs. Work-life balance is important because it ensures that our employees have the opportunity to not just take time off to relax or connect with family and friends, but take time to maintain their perspective on life and work. There is so much value when employees come back to the office after utilizing PTO or the weekend, they feel so refreshed and are much less likely to experience high levels of stress and burnout.

We know that our investment in our employees’ work-life balance is valued and reciprocated. Recently, on a Friday evening when most of our recruiters had signed off for the weekend, one of our clients had an immediate staffing need for four new employees that she would like to interview on Monday morning. Our team was quick to jump on this recruit and prioritize our client’s business needs because they know that PACE will account for these efforts in the future and allow flexibility for them when needed.

How does PACE promote work-life balance?

The concept of work-life balance is individual to every employee and ever-evolving so we encourage our employees to engage in conversations with their managers about how they are experiencing their work and schedule. Encouraging employees to utilize PTO is also a really important part of work-life balance too.

What does work-life balance mean to your company and why is it important?

At nCino, we believe companies don’t need to choose between providing a great workplace or great products; they can do both. We call that balance “hustling in comfort” and it’s one of the reasons American Banker named us the #1 Best Fintech to Work For. Striking this balance allows our employees to come to work refreshed, recharged, and ready to innovate.

How does nCino promote work-life balance, and has anything changed as a result of the pandemic?

nCino has always been a place where work-life balance is prioritized, which is clear from a generous PTO policy, including flex holidays and volunteer days, and office amenities such as standing desks, healthy snacks, weekly paddleboarding, and discounts on gym memberships.

During COVID-19, finding balance has been more important than ever, and nCino’s leadership regularly encourages employees to adjust their schedules and expectations to accommodate new challenges while still reaching their goals. During this time, nCino has also provided additional support, such as a work-from-home stipend, childcare assistance, and remote team building activities.

What does work-life balance mean to Simplus and why is it important?

Simplus has always used a remote work model for its global operations, so maintaining a routine that blends work responsibilities and obligations at home has been baked into our work culture. Showing respect for our employees’ time and sponsoring activities that encourage social interaction among employees, improves work relationships, encourages productivity, and fosters an efficient workflow.

How does your company promote work-life balance?

Fortunately, we’ve been resilient within the changing business climate. We’ve utilized technology to support remote work since our launch in 2014. But as an advisory and managing services company, the biggest shift has been adapting to what our INTERNAL customers need to feel valued. For example, we host virtual yoga and cooking classes, virtual team socials, Slack channels that attract common interests among employees, etc. Our management team realizes that reaching out to team members to talk about them rather than a project is now an important (and permanent) part of our management strategy.

What does work-life balance mean to Quick Base and why is it important?

At Quick Base, we understand that people are humans (not robots!) and have families and other obligations outside of work. Maintaining a healthy work-life balance allows our employees to bring their best to work, reduce stress, and prevent burn-out.  Work-life balance has proven to be especially important in this pandemic, and we have allowed parents unlimited PTO in order to care for their children in these trying times.

How does your company promote work-life balance, and has anything changed as a result of a shift to a remote-first plan?

Quick Base promotes work-life balance from the top down.  Our leadership team emphasizes that family is top priority and that they understand that there may be interruptions during meetings (screaming kids or barking dogs!), or the need to reschedule. The team has made that abundantly clear during the shift to a remote-first work environment that parents who are trying to balance a full-time work schedule and home-schooling/caring for children should do what is best for them in order to be successful and maintain sanity!
