15 Companies That Give Back To Their Communities

There is no bottom-line requirement that a company give back to its community, or to behave as a respectable citizen would, with a sense of civic responsibility. Most businesses are out to make money, lest we forget, and even the most benevolent for-profit organizations still have to keep an eye first and foremost on their bottom lines. The fact that so many companies DO give back to their communities – as exemplified by these 15 – is a reminder of how far society has come in recent decades. Now, to be considered truly successful, a company has to have a heart, plain and simple.  These companies do.

What are some of the benefits of a company giving back to its community? Why does Car Gurus do it?

At CarGurus, one of our Core Values is Integrity; we act responsibly and consider the impact of our actions on each other, our partners, and the world around us. Giving back to our communities — through charitable giving, volunteering, and more — is one of many ways we see this Value in action. Doing so by supporting the organizations that mean the most to our employees helps to target and amplify our impact and, importantly, fuels a sense of inclusion and belonging in our employees by being part of the process.

Our Charitable Giving Program encourages employees to nominate the nonprofit organizations that mean the most to them; an employee-led committee then reviews the nominations and awards grants to selected charities on a quarterly basis. In addition, CarGurus occasionally makes off-cycle corporate donations inspired by current global events. As of May, we’ve donated nearly $90K in Charitable Giving grants and another $25K in off-cycle corporate donations so far in 2021. Outside of charitable giving, our employee resource groups (ERGs) often organize drives and/or other volunteer opportunities to support local causes that are meaningful to their respective communities. Recently, our People of Color at CG and Parents at CG ERGs collaborated on a donation via AdoptAClassroom.org and were able to provide a local school teacher with much-needed school supplies, and more!

Community is the heart of Hollister. It is our compass and it is what fueled Kip’s passion for founding our organization over 30 years ago. Hollister’s community is multi-dimensional and wraps employees, job seekers, business partners, non-profits, and the City of Boston and State of MA government organizations into one so that collectively, these individual threads weave something of value. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we developed a series of virtual programs – free of charge – designed to support our community, bring leaders together, and enhance and deepen human connection. We developed over 16 program offerings offered in excess of 65 free sessions via Zoom. This included free weekly, virtual guided meditations by our CEO, Kip. Hollister’s Philanthropy Committee plans and executes the company’s organized charity and volunteer work. We host 4 main volunteer opportunities a year (one per quarter). What are some of the benefits of a company giving back to its community? Why does Chegg do it?

Chegg’s mission is to help every student achieve their best, in school and beyond, and we say externally we put our students first, and internally we put our employees first, and as such, our community giving focuses on three specific areas: the many barriers students face on their path to higher education, the communities where our physical offices are based, and our employee resource group (ERG) efforts around culture, belonging and diversity. Our company has made community giving a priority because our mission is to help students succeed on their path from learning to earning, but in order to do that we need to address the many systemic barriers that they face along the way. We support communities and causes that impact our employees because we are a company that puts our people first.

What are some of the programs you have in place at your company to give back to your communities?

We partner with our Employee Resource Groups (ERG’s) to identify nonprofits doing meaningful work around culture, belonging, and diversity, so these organizations are recommended by our ERG leads and employee members specifically. We also partner with DonorsChoose to support schools impacted by natural disasters, and Second Harvest Food Bank of Silicon Valley to support their efforts around food insecurity specifically amongst students and children in the Bay Area. We’re always proud that our employees embrace our partners, for instance back in November, Chegg employees donated almost $54,000 which equates to 107,000 meals to Second Harvest during a holiday donation drive. We exceeded many other companies in terms of donations per capita and percentage participation. Better yet, we have positively impacted the lives of many people last holiday season.
