At Elsevier, we are all on a constant path of discovery to shape our careers and are empowered to progress our unique development journey using our Signature Development Experience. Elsevier’s NetWorx mentorship program is an integral part of this journey and helps mentees and mentors continue to grow every day and further shape their careers by gaining knowledge, expertise, and support from colleagues across the organization.

Since 2019, over 1,400 employees have benefited from the power of mentorship through the NetWorx program, which includes a variety of tracks focusing on career development, advancing diverse talent in leadership roles, and reverse mentorship to build awareness and support culture change around inclusion, diversity, and equity. Everyone at Elsevier is welcome to enroll as a mentor or mentee and is supported through a guided process from finding their personalized mentoring match to working together on achieving professional or personal goals.

The NetWorx mentorship experience helps our colleagues gain the knowledge, guidance, exposure, and support to grow and develop through all stages of their careers. The programs have demonstrated how connecting our talent to one another through a state-of-the-art mentoring and networking platform can truly create positive change within organizations.

By going beyond the traditional one-on-one mentoring relationships, mentors and mentees have the opportunity to connect with individuals that are beyond their personal networks and gain new perspectives personally, professionally and culturally, that support a more inclusive and innovative workforce. Together, our employees have engaged in over 850 6-month mentoring connections to date. Impacts include increased engagement and motivation, higher confidence in career advancement and better support of diverse leadership.

We offer mentorship experiences, leveraging a digital platform with AI matching technology, helping our people to connect across boundaries and the world. Focusing on career, personal and leadership development through guided experiences, with programs ranging from 6 months to 1-year in length. Since launching the programs in 2021, we now have over 500 mentoring connections in progress.

Giving mentees the freedom and access to explore mentors across boundaries, whether divisional, functional or geography. Can you tell us a little bit about your company’s specific mentorship programs?

Hero Practice Services’ mentorship program is offered to teammates as part of their professional development plan. Participants are paired with a mentor at the company who helps the mentee to take active steps to prepare for promotion within the company, works through challenges and roadblocks and sets SMART goals. Mentors/mentees meet bi-weekly and each pair also has a quarterly check-in with Executive level leaders.

What are the main benefits of mentorship for your employees?

Mentorship offers consistent support and perspective from someone other than the teammate’s direct manager. Professional growth path is specific and mentor support enables the teammate to identify the levers that need to be pulled to prepare a mentee for promotion. Mentee is more successful at conquering challenges they encounter.

Can you tell us a little bit about your company’s specific mentorship programs?

Namely’s mentorship program is bi-directional with senior leaders paired 2-3 non-senior leaders. The program lasts 5 months. In this period, there is individual mentoring to each non-senior leader by the senior leader and group sessions where the non-senior leaders mentor the senior leader.

What are the main benefits of mentorship for your employees?

The main benefits are to promote cross-functional collaboration, to foster a transparent environment across different levels of the organization, and to provide development opportunities.
