Communication and empathy are crucial qualities in a boss. They will help the boss to connect with employees, and also be a big factor in understanding growth areas for the employee and how to help them achieve those goals. Without these qualities a boss can be very demotivating which will lead to lower productivity and lower quality work [and eventually turnover].

Empathy, discipline, and confidence. A good boss earns respect and trust from his/her employees by recognizing their needs as people and leading as an example of how they should conduct their work by maintaining discipline. A good boss also needs to have the confidence to stand up for his/her employees and make difficult decisions that will affect the company as a whole.

The best bosses I've had over the years were the ones who were accessible. Who didn't hide in their office with the door closed. They walked around and talked to people. Got ideas, feedback, suggestions. They inspired thinking, encouraged creativity. My boss today always walks into my office and says "You good? Do you need anything?"
