Be sympathetic to your crew. Remember they have lives to and things can come up requiring days off out of the blue. Be nice to your crew and become their friend. A happy crew with a manager that is on their side will produce a crew that is willing to give 110%.

Stop trying to be a boss, a "manager", and start being supportive of those on your team. Be the water carrier that gets obstacles out of the way so your team can excel.

Know the strengths and weaknesses of your department or staff you'll be working within the first few weeks. Take that knowledge and work with it. See where improvements can be made. See if interdepartmental communication can make things more efficient or if rotating staff into different positions helps "wake" them from the normalcies of standard routine. Asking your boss or hiring manager what trends they noticed if your predecessor was let go so you may avoid their fate better. Ask your staff questions if unfamiliar with the role or how things are run. See what they tell you. Take notes at this point, because you're a student then. Learn and adapt your skills to help enrich their performances.
