When bosses are unhappy with your work, she will give you plenty of information through body language, nonverbal cues, and other body language. Just like outside the workplace, when aggravated by mistakes, over-stressed, or bothered by something, he will allude to the reasons if not verbally, then through some form of communication. Has your boss's demeanor changed? Does he treat you the same as you have come to expect based on habit? Does your boss smile and bid you good morning? Chances are, if she is uncordial with you, then there is something that you should address. Your best practice is to ask regularly for reviews. Find out what it is that you can do better to rectify anything you may be a misunderstanding. Your boss will be pleased that you asked and will consider it a move in the right direction. Your boss is human, he or she needs to know you are in for the long haul and that your intentions are about success for the company. Loyalty and presence mean so much to bosses now.

Depends on the boss. Usually it's little stabs at your performance or person -- could be to your face or behind your back.

They’ll complain to the office administrator who will complain to HR and you will be verbally warned.

"Best" case is when the clues are NOT subtle. Managers must work on the assumption that "subtle" is incompatible with ACCURATE and QUALITY

They would give you warnings and let you know that you need to step it up. You will not hear any praise from them about your work. They will give special assignments to other coworkers and not you. Things like that

some times they say things like: that's good but you can do it better or you can do it faster or I need you to be more independent in your work to help in other assignments. Always saying that we can improve our capacities which is true and some times is a subtle clue to say that you are not doing it so well.

My current manager doesn’t handle confrontation well so, usually there are not direct discussions. Mass team emails are the way issues are handled.

Depending on who you are, they may say something to you or attack someone completely different for no reason other than they are mad at you. Yelling, screaming, cussing, sliding chairs around, slamming stuff, nitpicking random silly or tiny stuff that makes no difference, threatening, mentioning how you should quit if you don't like it here.

When I'm unhappy with my workers, I start to spend more time reviewing their work and pointing out things that need improvement. This is very time consuming, so at some point, when I realize they are not showing (enough) improvement, I stop wasting my time. I also reduce the amount of time spent bantering and joking, in an attempt to help them understand I mean business. From the employee side, they probably would start to feel the absence of my time and attention. It's not my management style, but other managers in my company will completely ghost their employees when they are unhappy / about to fire them (cancelling meetings, being vague with answers and feedback about their work, no longer applying pressure on them to perform). If you are an employee who has had performance issues in the past, and your manager suddenly gets off your back without specifically telling you that you've improved on xyz topics, it's probably time to start looking for a new job.
