Be a leader, not a boss. Set the example you wish to see from your crew.
Caring, compassionate, willing to take the time to assist with learning in certain areas or to help me become better at my job by showing not just telling. Demonstration is key in truly learning. She wasn’t afraid to get her hands dirty and working along side of her employees. Never screamed or embarrassed her employees.
Honesty
They genuinely cared about me and they strived to give me the tools to be successful.
The best we’re not micro managers.
Sense of APPROPRIATE humor, Punctuality, Fairness, Willingness to LISTEN (true "active listening" - not just lip-service to the ideal), and especially willingness to take "NO" for an answer if/when a client or upper management makes demands that can't be met.

Integrity
Allowed me to do new tasks, try even if it meant I failed and learn from my experience. I learned so much about the operation that way and gave me incentive to always improve and strive for excellence!

The best bosses provided the big picture goals and helped minimize interference so employees could accomplish the goals. They were clear in their expectations, and fair in their evaluations of everyone's efforts
Patience, listening, not being accusatory, providing opportunities for development, and making the workplace a safe zone to be yourself.
Left me alone to do my work. I don't do well with micromanagement. Assisted with issues I was not sure how to handle as well as help crafting the verbiage. Had my back.
Beeing disappointed when you under performed. Not mad but you felt like such a part of the team you wanted to do better. Builing trust you know you are not going to get fired over a mistake. See it fix and lets get this thing done. Admitting your part of the succes. Beeing happy you did and not afraid you would come for a raise. Because he does not fear telling you no and values honesty over easy
The best direction was through modeling the process or task.
Best bosses I ever had, treated people equally, same rules for everyone, not one or two who could do & say whatever they wanted. He appreciated those who could actually do their jobs & reprimanded or got rid of those who could not. They didn't put up with (cover or make excuses,) for racism, sexism, bigotry, hate speech & misogyny.
My boss let me think for myself and execute differently than he would. He only stepped in if he had constructive remarks or I asked for assistance.
Smart, had done my job for many years, paid attention, was fair but tough.
Support of subordinate's aspirations.
1. Did not micro manage! 2. Allowed me to be creative and implement new ideas. 3. Always presented feedback in a positive manner.
They get into the trenches with you
One that was transparent and fair.
Consistency, ability to give positive AND negative feedback in a constructive way, and always being in your employee's corner when another team (or a client) challenges their work.
A leader and a manager of people; had the discipline and honesty to make clear and concise decisions, while still inspiring loyalty and a sense of family. Rare. Usually managers are one or the other - hard decision makers with no connection to people, or team builders/people pleasers who cannot make the hard calls in a transparent manner.
