African Americans in Tech Are Least Satisfied With Their Career Progress

Thirty-five percent of African Americans who work in tech say they are satisfied with their career progress, the lowest rate among all ethnic groups, according to the latest reading of an ongoing query by Comparably.

The most and least satisfied workers

The query, which had more than 1,000 respondents by the Aug. 22 reading, shows that Asian/Pacific Islanders were the second most dissatisfied group (42% said they approve of their career progress). Hispanic and Latino workers were most content, at 52%).

Women less satisfied than men

Fifty percent of women and 45% of men said they are content with where they are in their careers, according to the survey. From a department perspective, women in admin and legal were least satisfied (15% and 14%, respectively), as were men in admin and customer support (24% and 27%, respectively). The most satisfied workers were men and women in executive roles.

Career satisfaction does not increase with experience

Workers with the least experience seem to have the most satisfaction in their careers — 58% of entry-level workers say they’re satisfied. Workers of other experience levels seemed to be in the same general vicinity in terms of satisfaction (between 45% and 48%).

Breakdown by city

Workers in Boston showed the highest levels of being satisfied with their career status (54%), followed next by workers in Denver and Salt Lake City. Workers in D.C. demonstrated the lowest satisfaction in their careers, at 37%. Phoenix and Atlanta reported the next-lowest levels of workers with career satisfaction.
