They are a supportive and (mostly) diverse group of people. It's been great to interact with so many people with different backgrounds.
My team is really talented and motivated. They are supportive and are willing to drop everything and mentor me if the need arises.

They understand technology and value quality. Many of them went through the apprenticeship program, too, so there's a lot of humility too.
They are all skilled developers, which gives them understanding for the kinds of challenges we are facing on a regular basis.
They roll their sleeves up and deliver code along-side us every now and again to ensure they are making legit strategic decisions.
How does 8th Light make decisions around promotions?
Information is gathered from those who work most closely with each individual, and that person's PDM speaks to their thoughts about a promotion opportunity (as they are playing the role of the employee's advocate). Lots of voices are heard and opinions considered, and then the employee is brought into the conversation and information is shared with them.
There isn’t a lot of transparency into this process. It is usually a decision made by one person behind closed doors.

What's the pay like for employees at 8th Light?
Fair and based on two key things: long-term sustainability as an organization (8th Light is a profitable company that has never had to lay off a single employee in its history) and individual employee work pace sustainability (you might be offered a higher salary at Company X, but you'll also be expected to work 30% more hours).
How's the leadership on the Engineering team at 8th Light?
We don't have an "Engineering team" (since the majority of us are engineers), but the technical leadership is great.
How's the vacation policy at 8th Light?
We have a good number of PTO days, which includes vacation time and sick time. Sick days can eat into vacation time if we don’t plan carefully.
Why do you feel undervalued and what would make you feel better about your compensation at 8th Light?
I'm not sure there's a good way to improve the compensation, as it's normal for contractors to make less. Still a little disappointing.
