What's the Engineering team like at Alpha Natural Resources?
Very cohesive for the most part. Remember though that there are rarely perfect situations. On average an engineering department has 7 or 8 people per site. Of the 7 or 8 typically there is no less than one and possibly 2 that are only interested in delegating and not doing even though their position really gives them no authority to delegate. It is one thing if one person is covered up, but another has finished all of their own task. In that case it's just team work to help out the one that is swamped. It is something else when you are not really doing anything. And trying to pass your own work off on someone who is very busy. That individual will do it even if you tell them if you do it you won't get your own task complete.
How's the leadership on the Engineering team at Alpha Natural Resources?
Very up and down, but ultimately a "look out for #1" atmosphere. Typically leadership will give you support as long as that support does not expose them to personal responsibility.
How long do the interviews usually take at Alpha Natural Resources?
Typically only 20 minutes or less. This is on average, but again professional positions will be longer due to the information that will be emphasized.
How do I do well in an interview at Alpha Natural Resources?
Be prompt, respectful, honest and assertive. Be clear with your desire for a long term position, and make it known that you want the position based on the long term potential af ANR.
What was the most difficult question that was asked during your interview at Alpha Natural Resources?
The same question that is hardest in any interview. What your compensation expectation is. This question is always hard for a couple of reasons. First you are fully aware that when you get ask the question, the interviewer already knows what the position pays. Second if you put out a number that is lower than they had in mind, you will get short changed. Last if your too high, you will lose consideration, because the interviewer will most likely feel that if they were to hire you that you would only stay until you found a higher paying position elsewhere. It is always a completely no win question. The interviewer should approach it as "This position has a salary between 55 and 70k annually, based on the experience of the applicant. Do you that you would be comfortable in that range, and where in the range do you feel you would fit?" This puts the facts in the open, and still allows the interviewer to obtain all of the desired information.
