Executive Bio

Ms. Valoria Armstrong, PHR, has been President of Tennessee American Water at American Water Works Company, Inc. since November 2015. Ms. Armstrong reinforces and strengthens customer, regulatory and local government relationships, drives operational and financial results and is the principal external contact for American Water in Tennessee. She served as Director of Human Resources (HR) for the Central Division, where she led a team of HR professionals in seven states. Her responsibilities included employee and labor relations, workforce planning and staffing, performance management and organizational development. Ms. Armstrong joined American Water in 2011 as a human resources business partner, supporting Tennessee and Kentucky. In this role, she served as a strategic partner to the state management teams with a focus on employee and labor relations, performance management, workforce planning and operational efficiencies. Prior to joining American Water, Ms. Armstrong was employed by Food Lion as Human Resources manager and in several other key positions for 15 years. Ms. Armstrong was the first woman and youngest president elected to lead the local chapter of NAACP from 2005 to 2012. She serves on the boards of the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce and Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce. She served as chair of the Chattanooga chapter of the American Cancer Society and has been actively involved in the Chattanooga chapter of the Society of Human Resources Management, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Chancellors' Diversity Advisory Council and the Volkswagen Diversity Council. She served on the board of the Orange Grove Center in Hamilton County. Ms. Armstrong has a bachelor's degree in business administration from Georgia Southern University.
