Diversity and Inclusion at Ascension

As part of a sustainable and systemwide commitment to listen, pray, learn and act to help address racism and systemic injustice, Ascension has launched a new justice-focused framework called ABIDE, which is built upon the hallmarks of Appreciation – Belongingness – Inclusivity – Diversity – Equity.

ABIDE is how we at Ascension seek to live out our mission as a health ministry in a way that celebrates the inherent dignity of each and every person. This work will be ongoing and requires participation from everyone in order for changes to be lasting and transformative. We are committed to fostering a culture of inclusion across all areas of our ministry.

Appreciation - We appreciate our associates. Recognizing associates and their peers’ contributions, celebrating our unique backgrounds, and sharing gratitude for each other are ways we can show appreciation.

Belongingness - People experience belongingness when they feel they are a part of something through connections with people, groups or communities. Belongingness is expressed through welcoming behaviors and treating others with respect and dignity.

Inclusivity - Inclusivity is how people welcome and invite each other into a conversation, a team, or a community. It’s about acknowledging varying perspectives and identities and understanding how others' experiences contribute to decision-making and working together, which can lead to growth.

Diversity - Diversity is commonly defined as variety or a range of differences. Often, within the workplace, diversity is used as an umbrella term to refer to people who are not part of a majority group. Within the ABIDE framework, diversity is not only about how we appear on the outside but also the essence of who we are on the inside, including our beliefs, values, personalities, dispositions, and abilities. The intersections of all of these characteristics combined with our thoughts, talents, and experiences express the diversity that makes each of us a unique individual.

Equity - Equity is experienced when all individuals are treated fairly and barriers are eliminated so everyone can fully participate in a group or community. Equity cannot exist when equal opportunity is suppressed or access to advancement is obstructed. Equity ensures fair treatment of people through thoughtful and compassionate consideration of another’s experiences and having the courage to take steps forward to level the playing field while advocating for those who are most vulnerable.

The hallmarks of our ABIDE framework provide guidance for a process of learning and improvement that is never complete. As such, Ascension is committed to continuous improvement in service to our associates, patients, and the communities we are blessed to serve.
