New API: Publish Logical Data Model to Project in One Step

We have introduced the API that allows you to publish a logical data model (LDM) to the project in one step. You do not need to separately generate a diff between the current and target LDMs, and then generate and execute MAQL DDLs to update the current LDM to make it equal to the target LDM. All you need to provide is the JSON representation of the target LDM, and the new API will take care of the rest.

    https://secure.gooddata.com/gdc/projects/{project_id}/model/publish

For more details about the new API, see API: Publish a logical data model to the project.

Of course, you can still use the API for generating a diff and MAQL DDLs and for executing MAQL DDLs if you need to implement more complex publishing scenarios or debug the process.

The following API updates are implemented:

The REST API resource/gdc/md/$project_id/objects/query?category=projectDashboard&limit=$limitwill serialize values ofprojectDashboard/content/filters[]/filterItemContent/{universum,default}/{from,to}alwaysas JSON stringsif present; now, those two values areserialized either as JSON integers or as JSON strings based on the value oftype.Same resource as this is/gdc/md/$project_id/obj/$obj_id.And WebApp has an advanced version of this resource in/gdc/md/$project_id/obj/$obj_id/viewwhich is affected too.In case of/gdc/md/$project_id/obj/$obj_idwill be affectedexecutionContext/content/filters[]/filterItemContent/{universum,default} too.

Each object returned by REST API resources: /gdc/md/$project_id/objects/query?category=etlFile&limit=$limit/gdc/md/$project_id/obj/$etlFile_idwill not have parseParamkey in etlFile/contentsection anymore.

No changes are needed on your side.No impact on your API configuration is expected.

    Upcoming Changes: Naming Date Filters

We are going to change the way how the date filters are named when added to a dashboard. GoodData Support

What exactly is going to change? Now, when you are adding a date filter to a dashboard, the filter is automatically named after thedate dimensionthat it is based on.When the planned change is made, the newly added date filter will be named after thedate datasetthat is it based on.

Nothing changes for existing date filters! This change willnotaffect the date filters that already exist on your dashboards. It will only be applied to the date filters that you will addafterthe change is made.

How can you get prepared for this change?Fromthe GoodData Portal, go toManage->Data->Data Sets, and check the names of thedate datasets in your project. Keeping in mind that the dataset names will be used as names for all newdate filters, decide whether you want to rename any dataset to make sense once their names are used as filter names.

NOTE:You can and will still be able to rename a date filter on your dashboard at any time.

UPCOMING:Date Filter Configuration on the Dashboard Level via API

To enhance functionality of date filtering, we are introducing an option to use API to configure filters.

The feature will be rolled out to all customers on September 5, 2019, with the next planned release.

The new feature enables the following:

Configuring the date filter component in KPI Dashboards to show only selected date filters

Workspace level configuration for all KPI dashboards

    Dashboard specific configuration

Selecting from the static filter, floating filter, and presets

Setting which date granularities (day, month, quarter, year) are available in the date filter

Changing the name of the date filter, making it read-only, and hiding it for the end-user

To enable before the final release, set the enableKPIDashboardExtendedDateFilters platform setting to true.To postpone the official release for your users, set the platform setting to false. For more information about the platform settings, see Platform Settings.

  • Generate Output Stage based on Existing Logical Data Model

You can now generate the Output Stage based on the logical data model (LDM) in your project when setting up direct data distribution from a data warehouse (for example, Snowflake or Amazon Redshift).

Generating the Output Stage based on an existing LDM can help you deploy the direct data distribution much faster in the situation when you already have a GoodData project with the LDM that meets your business requirements for data analysis and which you do not want to update. In this case, using the LDM as a basis for generating the Output Stage will help you save time and effort.

What other options are available? You can generate the Output Stage based on the Data Source and the database schema stored in it. Then, you would generate the LDM for your project based on the Output Stage. This approach works best when you do not yet have a GoodData project or want to generate/update the LDM to best fit the existing data structure in your data warehouse. For more information, see API: Generate the Output Stage based on the schema.

How can you generate the Output Stage based on the LDM? Use the following API to get SQL DDLs that you can then use to create GoodData-compatible views/tables:

    https://secure.gooddata.com/gdc/dataload/projects/{project_id}/generateOutputStage

NOTE: If you are a white-labeled customer, replace secure.gooddata.com with your white-labeled domain.

CSV Downloader: Certificate-Based Authentication for SFTP Locations

We have updated the way of how CSV Downloader authenticates to the SFTP server, from which you want to download data, when certification-based authentication mode is used.

If you use an SFTP location to store your source data and want to use certification-based authentication, set the auth_mode parameter to cert in the configuration file:

    "csv": { "type": "sftp", "options": { "username": "{[email protected]}", "host": "{sftp_hostname}", "auth_mode": "cert" }}

When scheduling a process for CSV Downloader in the Data Integration Console, provide the private key (as the csv|options|cert_key secure parameter). If the private key is encrypted, also provide the passphrase to decrypt the private key (as the csv|options|cert_passphrase secure parameter).

SQL Downloader: New Default Value for "fetch_size"

When you are usingSQL Downloader to download data from a PostgreSQL database, the fetch_size parameter now defaults to 50,000. Before, it did not have a default value (and this is still true for the other supported databases in SQL Downloader).

fetch_size is an optional parameter that allows you to customize the database connection by setting up the number of rows to fetch from the database when more rows are needed.

    "sql": { "type": "PostgreSql", "options": { "connection": { "server": "{server_address}", "database": "{database_name}", "username": "{user_name}", "fetch_size": number_of_rows // optional, defaults to 50.000 } }}

Keeping fetch_size at its default helps you prevent out-of-memory or performance issues. If you want to use a different value, avoid setting fetch_size to a small number (for example, 50).

  • API Structure for Data Sources Updated

We have updated the structure that the REST API uses for Data Sources. A Data Source is an entity that holds information how to connect from the GoodData platform to a Data Warehouse (such as Snowflake ).

The structure is used when you are working with Data Sources using the API. For example, it is returned in the API call response when you are creating a Data Source or when you are retrieving information about a Data Source.

In the structure, a new keyword, authentication, was introduced. It lists authentication methods. The credentials (username and password) are now nested under the basic method.

New Roles Introduced, Existing Roles Renamed in All Projects

As we announced earlier, we had made changes to the user roles on the GoodData platform. These changes were made to the projects that were created on February 21, 2019, or later.

Now, we have implemented these changes in all the remaining projects (that is, the projects that were created before February 21, 2019).

    What has changed?

The two existing roles have been renamed:

Embedded Only Explorer --> Explorer (embedded only)

Embedded Dashboard Only --> Viewer (embedded only)

The following new roles were introduced:

Editor + User Admin: Editor with a permission to invite users to the project, to manage relations between data permissions and users, and to manage variables

Editor + Invitations: Editor with a permission to invite users to the project

Viewer (disabled exports): Viewer with a restricted permission to export reports

  • New API - Check Project Compatibility in Different XAE Version

GoodData's XAE version 3 handles complex data relationships including many-to-many support. To enable this capability you can upgrade to XAE via GoodData's Platform Settings and in order to make the upgrade easier we've added a new API endpoint (also accessible via GrayPages) that verifies if report definitions in a given project will change after migration to the new XAE version. The returned report list splits report definitions into four groups 1) reports which will return the same result 2) reports which will return different result 3) reports which will fail with the new XAE version 4) reports which are failing with the current XAE version.

  • Create Calculated Measures using Arithmetic Functions

Analytical Designer now allows you to create new calculated measures directly in your insights.

Use items from the Measures section and basic arithmetic functions to create new measures for your current insight.

For example, you can create measures to display:

Your total revenue over the last two years (revenue this year + revenue last year)

Increase of your revenue since last year (revenue this year - revenue last year)

Your gross margin (gross profit / net sales)

  • Changes in User Roles: New Roles Introduced, Existing Roles Renamed

For the projects created on February 21, 2019, or later

We have made changes to the user roles on the GoodData platform. Currently, these changes apply to the projects that were created on February 21, 2019, or later.

For more information, see User Roles and User Roles Permissions.

Action needed:Renaming the two existing user roles may affect you in the following cases:

If you are usingthe Users brick, which is a part of Life Cycle Management

If you have implemented custom API-based user provisioning processes

In these cases, make sure that you are using the internal role identifiers and not the names of the user roles that are going to be renamed. The internal role identifiers have not changed. Using the user role names instead of the internal role identifiers will cause user provisioning processes to fail.

Use explorerOnlyRole for the 'Embedded Only Explorer' user role.

Use dashboardOnlyRole for the 'Embedded Dashboard Only' role.

What about the other projects?Currently, these changes apply only to the projects that were created on February 21, 2019, or later. The projects that were created before February 21, 2019, still use the old names (Embedded Only Explorer and Embedded Dashboard Only) and do not offer the new user roles.

We are working on propagating these changes to all the remaining projects. We will post a separate announcement when the changes in the remaining projects are implemented.

Max Amount of Data to Upload to Projects in Full Mode Increased

We have increased the maximum amount of data that you can upload to a project in a single load transaction in full mode from 25 GB to 50 GB.

Now, the limits are as follows:

    50 GB for full+incremental+delete mode

    25 GB for incremental+delete mode

  • GoodData.UI Version 6.2 Available: Arithmetic Measures, Model Helpers, and More

We have released Version 6.2 of GoodData.UI, our powerful library for building analytical applications powered by GoodData.

    What's new in GoodData.UI Version 6.2?

Arithmetic measuresYou can now create arithmetic measures that allow you to perform simple calculations with measures in a visualization (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and so on). For more information, see Arithmetic Measure.

Model helpersThe model helpers allow you to easily create various objects for your visualizations, such as measures, measure filters, attributes, and sort items. For more information, see Model Helpers.

Drilling using function predicatesYou can now implement drilling for measures (including arithmetic measures ) and attributes using predicate functions. For more information, see DrillableItems.NOTE: While the previous method of implementing drilling (using a list of drillableItems with the URI or identifier of a measure/attribute) is still supported, we do not recommend that you use this method anymore. It will be removed in one of future versions. Use the function predicates instead.

Request cachingThe Visualization component now uses cache for getting some static information from the GoodData platform to minimize the number of redundant requests.Clear the cache from time to time (for example, after logging out, or when leaving a page with visualizations using the GoodData.UI components). To clear the cache, call clearSdkCache from the sdkCache module.

  • Enable third party cookies to access embedded GoodData dashboards

    Issue Overview

Some modern browsers are now blocking third-party cookies by default. Many web services like GoodData rely on third-party cookies for authentication purposes when offerings are embedded in other sites. Disabling third party cookiesmay keep you from accessing the GoodData Portal if you or your customersare accessing GoodData through a window embedded in another application. In such cases, dashboards cannot be displayed until third-party cookies are enabled in your browser.

This issue is known to affect the following browsers:

    Firefox 22 and later

    Safari

Note:Customers using white-labeled versions of GoodData may not be impacted if the domain of the GoodData solution matches the domain of the embedding application. For example, if your white-labeled solutions domain is analytics.yourcompany.com and your web site is hosted as yourcompany.com, then you may not be impacted.

    To Fix

If you are experiencing issues accessing an embedded version of GoodData after updating your browser, the solution may be to disable blocking of third-party cookies. Follow the steps outlined below for your browser/platform:

    Safari for OS X

    Firefox for OS X

    Safari for Windows

    Firefox for Windows

Safari for OS X Disable Blocking of Third Party Cookies

Safari has moved away from their "Block Cookies" section. In order to make it work with the current version of Safari, you must have both"Prevent cross-site tracking" and "Block all cookies" checkboxes unchecked.

Firefox for OS X Disable Blocking of Third Party Cookies

    Steps:

    1. Open the Firefox menu and select Preferences.

    2. Select Privacy.

    3. Set the value of the "Firefox will" setting to: Use custom settings for history.

Data Warehouse Upgradeto Vertica 9.1.1 Started

As we, we have started upgrading the Vertica software on our Data Warehouse to Version 9.1.1.Completing the upgrade will take a few weeks.

We will be posting moreannouncementsto let you know the upgrade status.

COPY FROM S3 Temporarily Not Working

In Version 9.1.1, Vertica has changed the way how the COPY FROM S3 command works and handles credentials for S3 buckets. COPY FROM S3 is not working while the upgrade to Version 9.1.1 is in progress (see the article above).

When the upgrade is complete, COPY FROM S3 will be operational again, but the way of providing the credentials will change:

Before, you had to set the credentials via the REST API.

With Vertica Version 9.1.1 in place, you will provide the credentials directly in SQL commands.

The API resource for setting the credentials (https://secure.gooddata.com/gdc/datawarehouse/instances/{instance_id}/s3) has been removed.

    How does it affect you?

If you do not use COPY FROM S3, your work is not affected. There are no action needed.

If you need to use COPY FROM S3, copy files from the S3 bucket to a local client, and use COPY FROM LOCAL instead.

  • Time Over Time Comparison - Previous Period

In Analytical Designer, you can now compare any item in the Measures section to the previous time period.

For example, if you filter your data to a 10-day period, 21-30 of March, Analytical Designer compares it to the previous 10 days, 11-20 March. Or, if you filter data to this month (October 2018), Analytical Designer compares it to the previous month (September 2018).

As with the comparison to the same period of the previous year released earlier, you set this comparison in the date filter, and Analytical Designer creates new items in the Measures section.

Announcement: Planned Changes in User Roles

We are planning to make changes in the user roles that are available on the GoodData platform.

    What is going to change?

The two existing roles will be renamed:

'Embedded Only Explorer' will become 'Explorer (embedded only)'.

'Embedded Dashboard Only' will become 'Viewer (embedded only)'.

The following new roles will be introduced:

Editor with a permission to invite users to the project

Editor with a permission to invite users to the project, to manage relations between data permissions and users, and to manage variables

Viewer with a restricted permission to export reports

Action needed:Renaming the two existing user roles may affect you in the following cases:

If you are usingthe Users brick, which is a part of Life Cycle Management.

If you have implemented custom API-based user provisioning processes.

In these cases, make sure that you are using the internal role identifiers and not the names of the user roles that are going to be renamed. The internal role identifiers will not change. Using the user role names instead of the internal role identifiers will cause user provisioning processes to fail after the planned changes are implemented.

Use explorerOnlyRole for the 'Embedded Only Explorer' user role.

Use dashboardOnlyRole for the 'Embedded Dashboard Only' role.

We will post a separate announcement when the changes in the user roles are implemented.

New Load Mode in Automated Data Distribution

When uploading data to projects using Automated Data Distribution (ADD), you can now use UNRESTRICTED load mode in the executed data load process. UNRESTRICTED load mode allows you to customize your data loading strategy, to make it even more flexible, and to decrease data latency in your projects.UNRESTRICTED mode is available for executing ADD data load processes via the API.

When can you benefit from UNRESTRICTED mode? With UNRESTRICTED mode, you can split a data load increment into multiple tasks and upload the data in portions in a specific order so that the most relevant data is available in your projects as soon as possible. UNRESTRICTED mode lets you prioritize data to upload.

For example, you may want to first upload the data about your premium customers so that you can analyze it first, and then you can proceed with the rest of the data. Or, you may want your end users to first see the most recent data (let's say, for the last month), and you can load the older data later.

How does UNRESTRICTED mode work?In addition to specifying load mode per dataset (as CUSTOM load mode already allows), you can also specify additional parameters. For example, the condition parameter lets you define a condition to enrich the SQL fetch query and narrow down the data selected from the ADD output stage:"condition": "a__company=ACME""condition": "d__date BETWEEN '2018-12-01' AND '2018-11-01'"

Are there any access rights required? To be able to use UNRESTRICTED mode, you must have access to the Data Warehouse instance that is set in the ADD output stage for the project.

WARNING: UNRESTRICTED mode is intended only for experienced users. You should use UNRESTRICTED mode only if you are confident in executing the schedule via the API and have a deep understanding of your data. Using UNRESTRICTED mode incorrectly or with wrong parameters may result in data inconsistency in your projects. If you are not sure whether to use UNRESTRICTED mode, we recommend that you use DEFAULT or CUSTOM mode.
