Borrow an eBook from your public library using OverDrive. When you borrow a library eBook, you’ll download the eBook’s license file onto your PC or Mac.

Use Adobe Digital Editions to copy the license file on to your Kobo eReader.

Open the eBook on your Kobo eReader to read.

Before you start, make sure you have:

    A valid library card

    Internet access

Step 1 of 3:Borrow an eBook from your public library

An eBook can only be borrowed by one person at a time. If a book is checked out by someone else, you'll see an option to place a hold on a book. Once you place a hold on a book, it will be added to the "Holds" section of your account. When the book becomes available, you'll get a notification email.

Go to your public library’s website.

Look for the "eBooks" section of the page.

Note: Every library website layout is a bit different. If you're having trouble finding the eBook section of your library's page, try doing a search on the page for "eBooks".

If required, select www.adobe.com/support/digitaleditions/downloads.html OverDrive as the service that you'd like to use to browse books.

Find a book that you’re interested in and clickBorrow. The sign-in page will appear. Your library's sign-in page may look different from the one below.

Sign in to your library account using your library card number and PIN (if required). The book will be added to the Bookshelf page.

Click theDownload (EPUB eBook)button beside the book that you'd like to download. The .acsm file will be downloaded on to your computer.

    Notes:

Some books may not have a download option, which means that you cannot read the book on your eReader. To read books without a download option, you'll need to use your web browser to read the book online.

By default, most web browsers download files in to the Download folder. Look for the.acsm file icon in the Download folder.

Next, you’ll need to load the .acsm file that you’ve just downloaded from your library on to your eReader using Adobe Digital Editions.

Step 2 of 3: Set up Adobe Digital Editions

Use Adobe Digital Editions to copy the .acsm file to your eReader.

To set up Adobe Digital Editions:

    Install Adobe Digital Editions

Create an Adobe Digital Editions ID

  • If you have trouble connecting your Kobo eReader to Wi Fi, try these steps to fix the problem.

The most common Wi Fi issues are finding and connecting to your network, and forgetting your Wi Fi password. Turning Wi Fi off and back on will often resolve a problem with Wi Fi.

    Password issues

You need a password to join some Wi Fi networks. You'll see a Wi Fi set up tips for your Kobo eReader lock icon next to the name of any password-protected network when a list of networks is displayed. These passwords are sometimes called keys. The network administrator should be able to give you this.

    Issues finding your network

If you're having trouble connecting over Wi Fi because you can't find the network you want, here are some things you can try:

Check that you are within range of the network.

Check that the network is available.

Verify that your router supports and is set to 2.4 GHz. Kobo eReaders can only connect to Wi Fi networks that are 2.4 GHz.

Manually add the network to your eReader if the network is hidden

    Check that you're within range

Every wireless network has a range. A range is the area in which you can connect to the network. The average range of a home network is between one hundred and three hundred feet. When you're outside of a network's range, your eReader is too far away to connect.

Check that the network is available

There are a number of reasons why a network may not be available.

If a network is provided by a business (like an internet cafe) it may only be available during certain hours.

If there is a power failure or other technical issue, the hardware running the network may stop working. If the network is unavailable, you will not be able to connect. You can use another Wi Fi device (like a smartphone or Wi Fi-enabled laptop) to see whether your network is available.

If your network is available and you are within range, but your eReader still doesn't list it as an available network, you can try adding the network to your eReader's list yourself.

Remove the network that you’re trying to connect to

If you can’t connect to a Wi Fi network, try removing it from your eReader, and then re-add the network again.

Before you start, make sure you update your eReader.

For detailed steps, follow the instructions in this article:

Remove a Wi Fi network from your eReader

Manually add the network to your eReader

Sometimes networks don't appear in the scanned list because they're hidden.

To manually add a network you can't see on your eReader, tap Add Networkat the bottom of the scanned list, then enter the network name and password to connect.

For detailed steps, follow the instructions in this article:

  • Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) is free software that lets you add eBooks to your Kobo eReader from other sources.

You can add eBooks to your Kobo eReader using ADE from:

    Public libraries

    eBooks from another store

eBooks from the Kobo Store that are protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM)

Note:If you have one of these eReaders, you can borrow books using the built-in OverDrive feature without using Adobe Digital Editions:

    Kobo Clara HD

    Kobo Aura H2O Edition 2

    Kobo Aura Edition 2

    Kobo Aura ONE

    Kobo Forma

    Kobo Libra H2O

Learn how to use the built-in OverDrive feature here.

What is Digital Rights Management (DRM)?

DRM prevents the unauthorized copying or redistribution of eBooks to protect the rights of authors and publishers. If you downloaded a book protected by DRM, you’ll get a license in the form of an .acsm file with your book. You'll then use ADE to add the DRM-protected content to your eReader.

    To get started with ADE:

    Install Adobe Digital Editions.

    Get an Adobe ID.

Authorize your computer and eReader with ADE.

You'll need to use ADE when you want to:

Read an eBook that you've borrowed from the library.

Read a protected PDF file you've purchased from the Kobo bookstore.

When you borrow an eBook from your library, your library should be able to provide you with instructions on how to download your book's .acsm file.

Some books in the Kobo bookstore may be in PDF format which requires ADE to load the PDF files onto your eReader.

If you use a Kobo eReader or Kobo’s reading apps, you may never need to use ADE. Kobo’s reading apps and eReaders can automatically download and open most books from the Kobo Store.

Step 1 of 4: Install Adobe Digital Editions

Install Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) on your PC or Mac to transfer Digital Rights Management (DRM)-protected content onto your Kobo eReader.

    Download ADE from www.adobe.com/support/digitaleditions/downloads.html.

Find the ADE installation file on your computer.

    Open the ADE installation file.

Follow the onscreen instructions to install Adobe Digital Editions.

Step 2 of 4: Create an Adobe ID

Once you’ve installed Adobe Digital Editions, you’ll need to create an Adobe ID. If you already have an Adobe ID, skip to Step 3.

With Adobe Digital Editions open, click Helpat the top of the screen.

    Click Authorize Computer.

read more about the supported file types that work with Kobo eReaders.

Click Create an Adobe IDin the Authorization window.

    Notes:

Make sure the checkbox beside I want to Authorize my computer without an IDis cleared, and not selected.

Beside the eBook Vendordropdown menu, make sure Adobe IDis selected.

Fill in the appropriate text boxes and click Create account.

    Notes:

Your Adobe ID is the email address that you used to sign up.

Your Adobe password is the password you used to create the account.

You can use your Adobe ID and Adobe password immediately after you've created it.

Step 3 of 4: Authorize your computer with Adobe Digital Editions

After you’ve installed Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) and created an Adobe ID, you’ll need to authorize your computer with ADE. You only need to do this once.

With Adobe Digital Editions open, enter your Adobe ID and password that you've just created.

    Click Authorize.

Click OKwhen Adobe finishes authorizing your computer.

Step 4 of 4: Add books to your eReader using Adobe Digital Editions

If you downloaded a book protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM), you’ll get a license with your book. The license is also known as a .acsm file. When you download a DRM-protected eBook, you'll need to download a file that has .acsm at the end of the file name. For example, if you share your eReader with another family member, you might have created two Kobo accounts.

When you buy content from Kobo, you’ll get an email receipt. The email receipt contains the email address that should be used to sign in to your Kobo eReader or Kobo Books app.

If you're having trouble signing in to your eReader with your credentials:

Make sure there are no spelling errors when entering your email address.

    Tap Accounts.

Under 'Kobo', you'll see the email address that's signed in to the eReader.

Verify that the email address that you see is the same as the email receipt.

If the email matches: You are signed in with the correct account.

If the email does not match: Sign in with the email address shown on your Kobo receipt.

Step 3: Verify the email address on your Kobo Books app
