  • A rating on OfferUp is the average number of gold stars someone has been rated. The number next to the stars shows how many people have rated them.

For example, Torrey has been rated by 20 people, with an average of 5 stars.

    Incorrect ratings or reviews

After someone buys or sells something, the app asks them to rate the other person. Each person can choose to give up to 5 stars, and can choose to include other review notes. People can only give whole numbers of stars. If you see a half star in someones rating, thats from averaging multiple different ratings.

When someone has more than one sale with the same person, that person can rate them for each sale. The number following the stars will only increase by one, and will be counted at the first time that the person rates them. The number of stars for each item will be averaged with all other stars earned.

At this time, there's no way to see which people gave which ratings or reviews.

  • Archiving helps you clean up your Offers and manage your sales. When you archive an item from either your Selling or Buying tab, the item and any messages about it will be moved to your Archive folder.

For sellers, archiving an item also automatically unlists it, which ends the sale and removes it from future search results. You'll still be able to look up the item in the future and re-list it, but buyers won't be able to see it unless they sent you a message about it.

    How to archive

    Tap Find messages Offers

Tap either the Buying or Selling tab to find the item you'd like to archive

Tap the items photo and select Archive from the menu

If you were selling the item, confirm that you want to archive the listing and end the sale

  • Recommendations to help your buying experience go smoothly.

    Shop smart

Take a good look at the photo, description, and condition of anything youre interested in. The photo should show the actual item for sale, not a catalog photo.

If anythings unclear or you want more details, tap Ask to message the seller. Tips for messaging

Read reviews of similar items online so you know what to expect.

For high-value items, get an experts feedback. For example, if you're buying a cell phone, plan to meet at a carrier store to have the phone verified as unlocked and in working order. For expensive antiques or jewelry, get a certified appraisal. Buying guides

    Connect with sellers

Read the sellers profile to get to know more about them, see the ratings and badges theyve earned, and take a look at their other listings. More about reputation

Use OfferUps messaging system to ask about items you like, or to make arrangements to buy and meet up.

If you want a closer look at something before you offer, message the seller to ask them to add an additional photo to the listing. Let them know if there are particular details youd like to see.

We strongly recommend not exchanging personal information. Communicating outside of OfferUp makes it more difficult for us to protect your information and puts you at greater risk of fraud and other security issues.

    Negotiate prices

If an items price is negotiable, the sellers listed price can be considered a rough guideline.

Be fair. If you have an idea of the item's value, don't make a lowball offer. The seller will be less likely to respond.

If the seller has set a very low price for an item clearly worth more, offer a reasonable price.

Be respectful and open to counter-offers.

    Meet and pay

We recommend meeting at a public location like a cafe or shopping mall. For high-value items, consider meeting at a police station or official Community MeetUp Spot.

If you are purchasing a large item, bring a friend to help lift.

When youre on your way, inform the seller how long it should take you to get there. If you're running late, please let the seller know so nobody is kept waiting.

Inspect the item in person when you meet. You have the option to politely decline to buy if itisn'twhat you want.

OfferUp does not recommend paying with gift cards, personal/certified checks, cashless systems outside of OfferUp, or wire transfers such as Western Union or MoneyGram, as these payment methods can be more risky.

Once money has been exchanged for an item, the sale is final. Resolve any questions or issues with the seller before you pay.

    Report problems

If you find an item on OfferUp that isn't allowed under our Posting rules, or a seller seems suspicious, tap Safety tips to report it so we can investigate.

Remember: if you ever find yourself in an emergency or feel that your personal safety is threatened, always contact local police and emergency services first.

  • Watch for red flags that might tell you to look for someone else to do business with. If you notice any of these issues, report them to us.

    For buyers

The seller asks to be paid outside the app. They might ask for a certified check, electronic gift card, or a wire payment through a service like Western Union or MoneyGram. They might also request payment through a service like CashApp, Venmo, or Paypal.

The seller claims to pay for shipping fees and wants to send you an invoice. OfferUp does not set up any sellers to operate this way. Youll always see any fees and payments for any transaction right in the app.

We recommend paying with cash. For shipped items, you'll use OfferUp payments.

    For sellers

The buyer offers more than the listed price. They usually follow by asking you to ship to a different address, use a different carrier, or if they can pay through a third party instead of through the app.

    For everyone

The other person sends you a link that requires you to log in. Scammers may create fake websites that look like OfferUp and ask you to log in with your email and password. Never click on these.

The other person wants to communicate outside the app. When you use OfferUps messaging system, you never need to give out your email address or phone number. Giving out personal information is how fraud and identity theft can start.

The person or the post tells you about an "investment opportunity" or an "easy way to make money" by sending money.

  • When you enable the "Buy now" button on an item you're selling, two things happen:

You're more likely to get a full-price offer, because buyers see that you're ready to sell quickly

You make it easier to finish a sale: when you get a full-price offer, the system accepts it for you automatically, and sends you your pre-paid shipping label right away.

    What do buyers see?

The only difference in your listing will be the brightly-colored "Buy now" button. When a buyer gets all the information they need from your listing and they're ready to commit to the purchase, they tap that button and the sale is ready to complete. You just have to drop the item off for shipping, and as soon as the USPS scans the package, your payment will process.

  • How buyer protection works

When an item is paid for and shipped through OfferUp, the buyer may be protected if certain problems occur. Buyer protection covers up to the original purchase price of the item for eligible issues, as described in this document.

    Before you file a claim

First, contact the seller with questions, or to ask for a refund. You have two days for this after the package arrives.

If you don't get the answer you're hoping for, you have two more days to let us know.

    How shipping works for buyers

If you bought an item via nationwide shipping, you and the seller can sort out many issues yourselves. If that doesn't work and you request a refund through OfferUp, we'll keep track of your request and the response, and help you out if you can't reach a conclusion.

Let the seller know if you didn't get what you expected. They can respond to your request through OfferUp.

    What is covered

The following issues are covered when bought and shipped through OfferUp:

There was undisclosed damage to the item

An item is incorrect or missing

The item received is not as described

If the itemisn'tshipped within 6 days of payment, the buyer's payment isautomatically canceled and returned to theaccount or card they used to buy the item. It may take 3-5 business days for the fundsto be available.

The buyer's payment is held until the transaction is complete. The transaction is considered complete if no buyer protection claim is made within a 2-day period after item delivery. At that point, the payment is released to the seller.

Once the payment has been released to the seller, all sales are final and no refunds will be issued.

    What isn't covered

An item doesn't fit or the buyer doesn't like it

An item is prohibited by OfferUp

The purchase was made in cash or with an in-person cashless payment

The purchase was conducted through payment or shipping systems outside of OfferUp

    How to use buyer protection

Within 2days of receiving the item, let the seller know if you didn't get what you expected. They can respond to your request through OfferUp.

If they decline or do not answer, use the Contact Us button at the bottom of this article.

Select Submit a buyer protection claim in the form and enter your reason for using buyer protection. Well also need your transaction ID to find details about your purchase. You can find it on your receipt. Open it from your messages about the item, or:

    Tap Account

Tap Payments and receipts, then Transactions

Select the receipt for the item you have questions about

Scroll to Payment info for the transaction ID

OfferUp will review the request and take corresponding action. OfferUp may request additional information or documentation, and reserves the right to deny buyer requests.

On approval, OfferUp will provide return instructions, and the buyer will handle the item accordingly.

OfferUp will issue a refund up to the original price of the item, sent to the original form of payment.

    General advice

Ask the seller if you can check the devices serial number before buying the phone. The number may be called ESN, IMEI, or MEID, depending on the phone and carrier. These unique IDs will help you confirm with the carrier that the device hasnt been lost or stolen and doesnt have any account issues.

Be sure that the device has been erased and is no longer linked to the previous owner's account.

Meet at the carrier's store with the seller and activate the phone on the spot. Once its activated, try making a call.

    Selling through shipping:

    How shipping works

Sellers can make their items available for shipping by choosing Sell and ship nationwide when they list an item. You need to verify your email address with us first.

When buyers see an item they like, they can choose Ship to me, make their offer, and pay through the app.

We send sellersa pre-paid shipping label. Using this label is required! That's how we trackshipmentsand sellers get paid.

    Eligible items

To be eligible for shipping, items must meet these criteria.

Items must weigh less than 20lbs and be smaller than 108 inches in length + girth (girth is how big around the package is).

Items must be offered for sale at a price between$1 and $500.

Items must be available for immediate shipping. Items that may not be fulfilled on time, such as custom-order goods or event tickets, are not allowed.

Drop-shipped items are ineligible. Drop-shipping is when a seller purchases items from another retailer and directly ships to a buyer. This type of product sourcing is not allowed on OfferUp.

Sellers are responsible for complying with all applicable laws and regulations regarding mailing. Please checkthe:

    Fees

Sellers are responsible for paying a service fee. Shipping costs are typically paid by the buyer but can be paid by the seller. Shipping fees can vary, so the amounts are shown for each item. You'll know how much you'll pay before you buy.

Shipping is subject to the OfferUp Terms of Service.

    How to pack

Make sure your items get to your buyers without any hiccups:

    1) Use the right box size and packaging tape

You should use the smallest box possible since empty space can cause damage if the contents inside get jostled around.

Dont confuse packaging tape and storage tape. Use packaging tape! Its sturdier than storage tape.

    Best practices for shipping

    2) Dont over/under pack your shipments

Dont overpack the box, or it could burst in transit. If your box is close to the size of your item, pick a bigger box and add extra padding.

Make all items as secure as possible the more they move, the more likely they are to break.

    3) Always, always use your OfferUp label

The label helps you track your item, from the carrier to your buyers doorstep. As soon as you accept a shipping offer, you get the label you need. And you do need it--youwon'tget paid without it. If you have not received a label or run into other problems, you can contact our team to get further assistance.

    4) Sure, reuse that old box, but

Make sure all old markings are removed or covered, including barcodes, addresses, or hazardous materials signs.
