Q&A With Pactiv Employees

  • Top Employee Response

I was pleasantly surprised with the salary and 401K matching. The health and other benefits are standard, which is to say, good. HR seems to run efficiently.

  • Standard benefits but their HR policies are poorly documented or not at all.

  • Good Ole Boy Network. A lot of Old School but they are trying to change. If you are there to actually get something done it might be challenging for you.

  • The culture is very good. There is a lot of work but they are realistic about when- and how it is done. People are friendly and professional. It's a lot better than many other companies I have been at.

  • Depends on the building. Lake Forest was standard office and a nice layout with cubes and offices. Lincolnshire was a converted warehouse and it had cubes but the layout was bad because it was like being in one big room.

  • Low unless you are part of the elites in the Good Ole Boy network which is only about 10% of the people. A lot of people seemed worried about their jobs for no good reason.

  • I wish I knew how much bad behavior was tolerated there. A lot of the managers have the people skills of a fourteen year old. It seems to be a culture where you are just thankful to have a job and it doesn't matter how people are treated.

Asked to the IT Department at Pactiv

  • Sluggish. About 30 to 40 percent are technically proficient. A lot of people are just trying to protect their territory but there is a significant pocket of people who know their stuff and want to make things happen. That is rare though.

Asked to the IT Department at Pactiv

  • I can't speak for the leadership in other areas but in IT is was very weak. A lot of managers are worried about their jobs and will do any ridiculous thing if it means keeping their job. Many of the managers lack basic managerial skills like personal communication. About half of the manages in IT lack the basic technical skills for the area they manage. If Pactiv replaced every manager in IT with someone fresh out of college they would make a significant improvement.

Asked to all employees at Pactiv

  • Pactiv has no concept of what HR is supposed to do. There was no HR person in the building I worked in and for a long time I didn't even know who to talk to in HR. Their solution to a lot of HR issues is that the leave it up to the manager of the person so then they have 25 different ways to handle a given issue. If the manager doesn't like you, well, you know.

  • They have some good ideas but the execution is consistently very weak. Instead of seeing how other companies have successfully done things they are usually stubborn and try to recreate the wheel every time. Usually the support teams go on vacation after major projects are finished.

Asked to the IT Department at Pactiv

  • I don't think they measure it. The measurement is if the manager likes you on a personal level. I only did goals there once and they were done several months after the time period they applied to. The manager was told he had to do them or else it would not have happened.

Asked to the IT Department at Pactiv

  • Poorly. Layoffs are never easy but I saw them happen suddenly and with shady explanation. Don't believe them when they say nobody is ever fired. I saw several really good people get the boot because they didn't get along with the "culture".

Asked to the IT Department at Pactiv

  • Seems kind of standard. Most of it is not explained at all which is kind of normal for companies these days. They do have a good career web site.
