View ArticleWe want doctors to feel comfortable providing answers to questions about medicine and medical problems. Quora's policy is that in answering medical questions, doctors should not give a reader the impression that they are acting asherdoctor, thus possibly creating a professional relationship (i.e., doctor-patient) and subjecting the doctor to "duties of reasonable care."
Questions related to medicine
It's OK for a question to describe a general situation, illustration, illness, or symptoms, but the question should withhold enough facts so that it's clear that it's not describing a specific patient.
Medicine-related questions on Quora arenot allowedto provide facts that give the impression of being patient-specific. Questions that are patient-specific should be edited to become questions about general medical problems or deleted.
Answers related to medicine
Medicine-related answers can provide general guidance, context, and illustration, but specific or diagnostic answers are not allowed. Answers should not provide specific treatment recommendations or give the impression that they are a substitute for a real-life consultation with a doctor.
Doctors should not solicit patients for treatment. For example, doctors should not volunteer to schedule patient appointments on the site; doing so could violate medical board rules regarding advertising.
In answering medicine-related questions, doctors should be careful not to discuss privileged or confidential details of past or current patients. Doctors should also be careful not to accidentally reveal confidential information in indirect ways for example, by discussing hypothetical illustrations that could be traced back to specific patients.
Needless to say, doctors should not suggest or prescribe medication to questioners based on interactions over Quora. Such a practice would likely violate telemedicine rules for many state medical boards.
Adding medical disclaimers to answers
Doctors or medical students who answer medical or medically-related questions on Quora should identify themselves as licensed physicians or medical students and add a disclaimer to the end of their medical answers.
Quora makes it easy for users who are doctors or medical students to include a personalized medical disclaimer when answering a question in the Medicine and Healthcare topic (and related topics).
Attaching a disclaimer ensures that anywhere the answer text is shown, it is accompanied by the disclaimer text beneath it. The disclaimer will appear in a visually distinct region beneath the answer, truncated to show only the first line with an option for the reader to expand to the full text.
To add a disclaimer, the eligible user should click the "Attach Medical Disclaimer" link found by clicking the "..." icon at the bottom of the answer editor and following the instructions.
This medical disclaimer will be the disclaimer that shows up on your answers in questions in Medicine and Healthcare. Once initially set, a user's personalized disclaimer may be edited from the Settings page.Note that editing this text will update the text on all previous disclaimers.
Once an eligible user initially creates a personalized disclaimer, she can attach this disclaimer toanyexisting answer (i.e., even on questions that are not tagged with Medicine-related topics) by editing that answer and clicking the "Attach Disclaimer" link. Disclaimers may be removed from an answer by editing that answer and clicking the "X" next to the disclaimer text.
We've worked hard and done research to craft this disclaimer language to protect our users. However, medical board rules differ by state and country, so wearen'tsure that this language will work for every doctor in every location -- especially since rules can change over time. As always, use your own good judgment as a licensed professional and, if appropriate, you should edit or add to disclaimer language to comply with your states medical rules.
We hope that over time, doctors in the Quora community will share what they learn about state-specific disclaimer language.

View ArticleQuora's mission is to share and grow the world's knowledge. We seek to achieve this mission by creating the best page on the internet for any given question pages that are valuable and reusable resources to readers.A good answer is helpfultoanyone who wants to know the answer to the question.Good answers are helpful to both the original poster of the question and to anyone else who has the same question in the future. An answer is helpful when it's clear, credible, and sincerely addresses the question that was asked.More specifically, helpful answers:
Answer the question that was asked. Good answers are very helpful for someone who wants to know the answer to the question. You should always assume that people are asking in good faith and really want help. Helpful answers don't change the subject, obsess over faulty premises, or make fun of the question. A good answer often considers the frame of mind of the typical person that has this question what are they wondering, what are they confused about, what kind of background they need.
Provide knowledge that is reusable by anyone interested in the question.A good answer has facts and insights that are general and reusable. An answer is not the most helpful if it only helps one person with specific circumstances not listed in the question. Citing your own opinion or view is fine, but if you think your opinion is the right answer to the question, then you should explain and support the case for your point-of-view (i.e., why you believe that many people should share your point of view). The best answers to a general question sometimes cover many different cases with conditions (e.g., "if you're tall, I recommend X; if you're short I recommend Y").
Support your answer with rationale.Helpful answers typically assume that the question is implicitly asking "Why?", even if it doesn't say so explicitly. This means you should include convincing rationale, so that the reader can understand why the answer is correct. Even in cases where a question is about personal opinion, personal experience, and/or individual expertise, it's still important to demonstrate why your answer is accurate and helpful (and not just popular).
Demonstrate credibility and be factually correct.A good answer convinces readers that it's trustworthy. An answer thats wrong or which includes incorrect facts or premises is not helpful. Answers can demonstrate credibility in a number of ways, including: providing reliable sources, listing good examples, and explaining why you have expertise or first-hand experience in the subject. Ideally, writers should indicate why they're qualified to answer the question. (You should provide good topic bios whenever it makes sense.) Some of the best answersdon'tneed to cite sources because they are written by people with expertise or first-hand knowledge. However, if an author provides an answer that depends on third-party facts and analysis not based on their own personal expertise its helpful to provide external links and source material.
Are clear and easy to read.Good answers are very clear to read and understand, even for someone who is reading quickly or skimming the page. It's helpful to include simple formatting that adds structure and helps emphasize key pieces of information. Of course, a good answer needs to have correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Any images or video in an answer should help bring clarity to your points. Good answers are also usually enjoyable to read. They are engaging and thought-provoking and may include empathy and humor. A good answer avoids insides jokes or sarcasm.
The best answer should aspire to be the most comprehensive, helpful, and trustworthy resource on the Internet for that question. For any question, Quora wants to attract themost helpfulanswer for someone who wants to know the answer to the question. Our best answers are the ones that will get distribution and wide readership.
Quality and distribution how Quora distributes high-quality answers
We will continually improve and change Quora to get better at rewarding quality content with better distribution. To be clear, that means:
High-quality answers should get a lot of distribution (in feed, in digest emails, etc.).
Low-quality answers should get minimal distribution.
The more complete and thoughtful your answer is, the more likely it will (1) rank at or near the top of the page and (2) reach lots of readers.
Short fragments that contribute a bit, but not much, to the quality of the page won't get much distribution.
View ArticleOn Quora, you are required to use your real, full name for your account. To do so, you can change your name from your profile.
If you are ever uncomfortable about associating your identity with a particular question or answer, you can write the answeror ask the question anonymously. If Quora Moderation believes that a user is not using their real name, the user may be asked to provide supporting evidence.
More specifically, the following rules apply to Quora profile names:
Company or organizational accounts: you may create an account on Quora to represent a legally incorporated business or other organization. You are not required to do so if you prefer to answer using a personal account. Not all organization accounts will be verified, though we may ask company accounts to provide verification.
Names in non-Latin alphabet languages:Characters and letters that are not part of the Latin alphabet are allowed in usernames in parentheses if a Latin alphabet-name precedes the parenthetical. Example: Mikhail Gorbachev ( ), Hu Jintao (). The only exception is for Quora in Japanese where the non-Latin character can appear in the following format: (Shinz Abe).
Titles, such as "Dr." and "Ms.", may not be used in a Quora name; instead, information about degrees (e.g., "M.D.", or "PhD.") may be included in the user headline that appears to the right of your name, or elsewhere in your profile.
Role accounts: Since each account should be connected with a real name, multiple accounts representing the same person (e.g., a professional identity under one name and a personal identity under a different one) are not permitted.
Capitalization:Names should be appropriately capitalized. JOHN SMITH should be capitalized as John Smith.
We work very hard to ensure a safe environment for users: our Be Nice, Be Respectful policy is one of our core principles, and Quora Moderation works hard to enforce this.
If someone is harassing you, please report the harassment by using theReportoption in the extras menu ("...").

View ArticleThe key principle underlying our policy on collapsing is thatpeople should make a page more helpful for people who are interested in the question.
Given this principle, Quora may collapse answers for the following reasons:
Doesn't answer the question. The answer should respond to the question asked. The answer should not misinterpret the language of the question and/or respond to a different question. It is OK if an answer challenges an important premise in the question instead of directly answering the question, as long as the answer clearly makes the page more helpful (and includes meaningful explanation) for people who are interested in learning the answer to the question.
Is a joke.Answers that are jokes generally make the page less helpful. Humorous answers are allowed if they make the page more helpful to someone who is sincerely interested in learning the answer to the question; otherwise, they are not. To be considered helpful, a humorous answer should include a meaningful explanation. Answers to survey questions are subject to these rules. Survey question answers will be treated as joke answers if (1) they are not plausible given the conditions described in the question and/or (2) they appear to be primarily intended as a joke. An answer may be collapsed as a joke answer if it violates Quora'srules against meme pictures and humorous images in answers.
Violates Quora's images policy.Image-only and video-only answers, and answers that contain Meme images are not allowed on Quora. Answers are not allowed which: (1) include a meme picture and/or (2) are short and include a humorous image or video that isn't very helpful to someone interested in learning the answer to the question.
Should be a comment.A response to another answer on the page should be moved to the comment section of that answer. Clarification or commentary about the question should be moved to the question comments.
Quora content must be in the language you have selected. This is so that users will be able to find and understand its contents.
Relevant affiliations need to be disclosed. To help people interpret the views expressed in this answer, any relevant affiliations should be included in the answer text or the author's credential. For example, if a user writes an answer about his own company or product, the answer (or topic-specific credential) should make clear the user's affiliation with the company. This disclosure can be brief and does not need to be set off separately, as long as it is clear. A relevant affiliation is any involvement that a reasonable observer would think is important for interpreting the views that the user expresses in an answer.
Other / Needs improvement.Examples include: (1) being unintelligible or having severe problems with grammar or spelling; (2) not being a sincere attempt to make the page a better resource for someone who wants to know the answer to the question; (3) no longer being relevant; or violatingother policies and guidelinessuch as theBe Nice, Be Respectful policy.
Very bad formatting.Answers with very poor formatting are not allowed and will be collapsed. Very poor formatting distracts from the content of the answer on the page. This is likely a result of one or more of the following problems: (1) Poor use of spacing or paragraph breaks; Bad spelling, capitalization, or grammar; (3) Use of "text-speak"-style language; (4) Poor use of formatting tools such as boldface, italics, etc. Answers will not be collapsed for a small number of formatting issues. To have a badly formatted answer uncollapsed, the edited answer needs to be clearly well-formatted.
Note
Answers that say "We don't know" / "We can't know" ("WDK/WCK") are allowed on Quora under certain conditions, but there is a presumption against such answers. Such answers are allowed if all of the following is true: (1) it is clearly plausible that the question can't be answered, even by someone knowledgeable about the topic, (2) the answer includes significant and meaningful explanation for why WDK/WCK is the right answer, resulting in the answer becoming a clearly helpful and reusable resource, and (3) the answer is clearly not aimed at being jokey. Note: in deciding whether a WDK / WCK answer is helpful, Quora Moderation will give more leeway to people with clear subject matter expertise.

View ArticleThis is an official Quora policy that reflects the agreed upon conventions of the communityThe only reason admins edit-block or ban accounts is to make Quora a great resource and support the sites mission. Admins don't like edit-blocking or banning people and are committed to being reasonable, thoughtful, and consistent in their decisions.Having a Quora account is not a right. Quora has a number of admins, but their time is very scarce and they do not have time to deal with people who are not helping the site. If a person is overall not helping the site, admins may choose to suspend or ban them.Edit-blocks and bans may be temporary; if a person is banned or edit-blocked, she can come back when she cools off and decides to put an honest effort into being helpful and making the site a great resource. Edit-blocks generally last until the person responds via PM and makes his case to be unblocked. Some reasons why admins may edit-block or ban someone:
They vandalize content on the site that is editable by everyone, includingquestionsand answer summaries.
They engage in one or more actions which violate theBe Nice, Be Respectfulpolicy. These actions may relate to questions, answers, or comments.
They post a significant number ofquestions, answers, and/or comments that aren't helpful.
They repeatedly violateQuora policiesand/or does not change her behavior after receiving a content warning.
In most cases, admins have the discretion to make edit-block and banning decisions based on their own judgment.
Allowing admins to use their individual judgment is important because there is too much activity on the site to make every decision collaboratively.
If someone feels that she's been edit-blocked or banned unfairly, she can submit arequest via our contact form
This approach lets us make lots of decisions and keep quality on the site high.
If an edit-block or banning decision is difficult and/or involves a person who is active on Quora, then the decision will be made collectively by the admins as a group with each admin having the opportunity to provide input.

View ArticleIf you do not want your Quora profile and/or nameto appear insearch engines, go to your privacy settings page andsetthe option "Allow search engines to index your name?" to "No".
Unchecking this option will make Quora instruct search engines like Google not to index your profile page, and not to index your linked name anywhere else it appears on Quora, including answers you've written and any @-mention.In other words, if someone searches your name on Google, your answers and profile page should not appear in the results when you uncheck this option. Your name will show up as "Quora User" to any search engine crawlers that we detect, even on questions or answers that you contributed publicly (ie, not anonymously).
So if you're concerned about people being able to Google your name and have all your non-anonymous Quora answers or comments show up, this option provides some protection. On the other hand, if you think your public Quora answers add to your reputation and you want to maximize the number of people who see them, you won't want to use this.
For this setting to take effect, Google has to recrawl pages and update its index; we don't have control over how long this takes; in practice, it usually happens within 12 weeks.
Keep in mind that this privacy is just around your linked name as we display it on Quora. The content of all answers will be public and will be indexed by search engines.

View ArticleThe verified checkmark icon appears on profile pages for well-known and high-visibility public figures in general interest domains like business, entertainment, government, religion, journalism, sports and other areas. In support of our missionto share and grow the worlds knowledgewe will verify a profile if we believe that many people reading answers from the person will recognize the name and will value confirmation that the writer is the person that they think it is.
What is a verified profile on Quora?
A verified profile on Quora is a high-profile writer, public figure, or organization whose identity on Quora has been confirmed. You will know that an account has been verified if they have a blue verified check mark on their Quora profile.
Why does Quora verify profiles?
As Quora has expanded its reach and scale, we have seen an increasing number of public figures writing answers. Verification helps establish the authentic identities of these individuals. We verify profiles to help you be sure that people are in fact the people that you think they are.
What kinds of profiles get verified?
We verify a profile when we believe that a significant percentage of Quora readers recognize the persons name or background and will value confirmation of the persons identity.
What about company or organizational accounts?
Not all company profiles are verified on Quora. We apply the same standard for verification to companies as individuals and may ask an organization to verify its identity in order to avoid impersonation of well-known entities.
Besides verification, how can I show my profile is authentic?
On Quora, the best way to support the authenticity of your identity is to link your profile to your Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter profiles. You can do this by visiting your Quora "Settings" by clicking on your name on the upper right-hand side.
How do I submit my profile for verification?
You can submit your profile using the form at http://www.quora.com/verification. Please provide any relevant information about your request for verification. Accounts are more likely to be verified if you have connected your Twitter or Facebook account, which can be done using the Settings page.
View ArticleThere are three types of question deletions on Quora:
Deletions made by the user who added the question. After adding a question, the OP (original poster of the question) has a grace period during which he or she is permitted to delete the question; this grace period ends when a certain level of activity on the page has occurred. This policy is consistent with Quora's philosophy that questions belong to the community and OPs do not have ownership over their questions.
Deletions requested by a user regarding a question about themselves as an individual.
Deletions to questions made by Quora moderators. Questions that are merely badly formed or unclear should be improved or tagged for improvement rather than removed. Joke questions should not be deleted; instead, they should be tagged with theJoke Questions tagwhich will limit their distribution to users who are interested in that content. There is a presumption in favor of editing questions rather than deleting them where this is reasonable and practicable. Questions on which a substantial amount of activity has taken place should not be deleted in the absence of consensus among moderators.
Some reasons why moderators may delete a question include:
The question is not a sincere attempt at eliciting good answers, perhaps because it is primarily focused on making a point in an argumentative manner. In cases where the question has been posted anonymously: If a question is posted by an anonymous OP, we will aggressively interpret the sincerity test; if reasonable people would conclude that there is a greater-than-50% chance that the question is not sincerely intended to elicit good answers, then it will be deleted. If the OP wants to appeal this decision, they will need to remove anonymity on the question and post a comment on the question making their case why the question should be interpreted as sincere. Once a question has been deleted per this policy, the anonymous OP cannot fix the question by editing it; the OP needs to reveal their identity and explain their rationale. This rule will be enforced especially aggressively on hot topics (e.g., religion, gender, politics, etc.).
The question violates Quora's Policy on Protecting Individuals.
The question could be considered to constituteharassment or hate speechby a reasonable observer and has the potential to make the experience of using Quora uncomfortable for targeted group(s) of users.
The question is posed such that a direct answer that sincerely attempts to provide the information requested by the question would inevitably be contrary to a Quora policy, including but not limited to the Be Nice, Be Respectful policy and the policy prohibiting answers that advocate certain harmful actions.
The question's primary focus is the promotion of a product or service.
The question is a legal or medical question that concerns client- or patient-specific facts.
The question is not written in English.
The question is not a question at all, but is some other sort of content.
The question is incoherent or otherwise unable to be answered meaningfully, and would not be improved by straightforward edits.
Questions that are created with the purpose of attracting spam content are also considered spam and may be deleted.
The question is a solicitation, classified ad and/or job posting. (To be clear, it is fine to ask questions like "What are the best ways to go about hiring great iPhone developers in Silicon Valley?" that are requests for general, reusable advice about approach.)
Notes:A user cannot delete a question that another user has added. However, if a user notices two duplicate questions, the user can redirect the newer questions with fewer answers to the older question with more answers. Users can also edit questions to improve them, just as moderators can.
If you feel your question has been unfairly deleted, please contact us using our contact form.

You can learn more on the Quora Partners Blog !
How much money can I make from the questions I ask?
There's no limit.
How and when will I be paid?
First, you need to connect a Stripe or Paypal account. If you are located in the U.S., you must use a Stripe account. If you are in a non-U.S., eligible country, you must use a Paypal account.
After you've done that, every month we'll total up the money you've earned and send it to you on the first Monday of the month (based on U.S. Pacific Standard Time).
Note that you must have earned at least $10.00 to be paid. Once you've earned $10.00, no further action will be needed on your end, as the money will automatically be sent to you. Once the payout has been sent, it may take up to two business days for the money to reach your account.

Are all questions eligible to generate advertising revenue?
No; to best serve our advertisers, there are some categories of topics that we do not show ads on. Examples include adult content, content associated with violence, abuse, or terror, and other potentially controversial topics. View ArticleQuestions with substantially the same meaning should be merged as duplicates. The key for proper question merging is that the intents of the people arriving at both questions are the same. Even if the phrasing or details are slightly different, questions should be merged when you expectallanswers to apply to both questions.
Examples of questions that should be merged are simply alternate phrasings of the exact same question. Consider the following questions
Can I go to Belize from Cancun without taking a flight?
How can I go to Belize from Cancun without taking a flight?
Can I go to Belize from Cancun without flying?
They all satisfy the exact same intent and should be merged together.
More generally, questions that begin with
How do I do X
How do you do X
How could I do X
How could you do X
Can I do X
Could I do X
all frequently satisfy the same intent.
Examples that shouldnotbe merged:
Where are the best tourist attractions in Paris?shouldnotbe merged intoWhere's the best view in Paris?because these satisfy different intents. Not all tourist attractions have good views and not all places with good views are tourist attractions.
How do I prepare for a software engineer interview at Google?shouldnotbe merged intoHow do I prepare for a software engineer interview?because while the first question is asking for specific advice that applies to Google and the answers to the second question may not satisfy that intent.
For example, "Is X the best Y?" should not be merged into one question: "What is the best Y? because the intent of Is X the best Y? is to examine how X is or is not the best Y. People with that intent who end up at What is the best Y? may not have their intent satisfied because X may not be addressed in any answer.
It is instructive to examine some similar question that should be merged and should not be merged around weight loss are:
What is the easiest and most effective way to lose weight?should not be merged intoHow rapidly can someone safely lose weight?because the intent of easily and effectively losing weight is not the same as rapidly and safely losing weight.
Are there any foods or supplements that actually reduce the fat so that I can lose weight easily?should not be merged intoHow rapidly can someone safely lose weight?because the intent of finding out how to lose weight through foods or supplements is not the same as rapidly and safely losing weight.
How can I lose weight easily?should not be merged intoHow rapidly can someone safely lose weight?because the intent of losing weight easily is not the same as rapidly and safely losing weight. However,How can I lose weight easily?should be merged intoWhat is the easiest and most effective way to lose weight?because the losing weight easily generally has the same intent as losing weight in the easiest and most effective way, as few people wish to lose weight ineffectively.
Can you lose weight without exercise?should not be merged intoHow rapidly can someone safely lose weight?because the intent of losing weight without exercising with no time frame specified is not the same as losing weight rapidly and safely. However,Can I lose weight without exercising?should be merged intoCan you lose weight without exercise?because the intents of these two questions are the same.
Disputes
Should there be a reasonable dispute about whether to similarly phrased words or phrases are the same, then err on the side of not merging, as it will always be easier to merge later, whereas unmerging later on can be difficult.
Finally, all merges are reviewed to make sure that they satisfy these policies and guidelines.
