View ArticleBy default, Slack will retain all messages and files for the lifetime of your workspace. If youd like, you can customize retention settings and delete all messages and files after a set amount of time. For example, a10-day message retention policy will automaticallydelete any messageon your workspace that is older than 10 days.
The basics
Message and file deletion is permanent. Use care when adjusting these settings.
On the Standard and Plus plans, you can adjust retention settings for the entire workspace or for specific channels.
In an Enterprise Grid org, you can set a policy that applies to every workspace in your org.
Setting or changing a policy won't immediately delete anything this will occur the next time your policy runs, typicallyat 9 p.m. PST.
Deletions with message retention settings occur once per day on a cycle.
Retention settings will apply to all messages and files, including ones that are pinned or starred.
Slackbot will notify all Workspace Owners of changes to retention policies.
Note: If your application to use Corporate Export is approved and you've enabled the tool, custom retention settings will be reset to keep all files.
Message retention
There are four options when choosingmessage retention for channels and direct messages:
Keepeverything Slack will keep all messagesexchanged in your workspace, and logs of user's message edits and deletions, found in a data export.
Keepall messages, but don't track revisions Slack will keep all messages, but will not keep logs of what the original text was, prior to users message edits and deletions.
Delete messages and their revisions after... This setting allows you to determine a period of time after which Slack will permanently delete messages (including message edit and deletion logs) from channels and direct messages. This setting can be as short as one day.
Let workspace members override these settingsThis setting allows members to set their own retention period making it shorter or longer for private channels and direct messages. Workspace Owners will be able to adjust this for public channels, too.
Set a message retention policy
Standard and Plus plans
Enterprise Grid plan
Heres how to set a retention policy for channels and direct messages:
From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left. contact Slack
Select Administration, then Workspace settings from the menu.
Under Settings, expandMessage Retention & Deletion.
ClickSave, thenConfirm Settings.
Remember:If members are allowed to set different retention policies for direct messages and private channels they are a part of, those policies will override the workspace-wide policy.
Note: An Org Owner must contact Slack to add or change their organization's retention policies.
Org Owners can set a message retention policy that applies to every workspace in their organization. If a policy is set, Slackbot will notify the Primary Org Owner and request approval to apply it. With a policy in place, Workspace Ownerswon'thave the option to adjust message retention for their individual workspaces.
Review org-level message retention policies:
From your desktop, sign in to your Slack Enterprise Grid, then click Manage Organization.
Under Settings, click Messages and Files.
View policies for channels and DMs under Message Retention Policies.
Set workspace-level message retention policies:
Note: With an org-level policy in place, Workspace Ownerswon'tbe able to set message retention at the workspace-level. These settings will be locked and non-adjustable.
Workspace Owners can only set a retention policy for their workspace if there's no org-level policy in place. Because files are stored at the org-level, Workspace Owners won't be able to set a file retention policy, but they can set a message retention policy in their workspace. Here's how:
From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
Select Administration, then Workspace settings from the menu.
Under Settings, expand Message Retention & Deletion.

Note:Members can set different retention policies for their direct messages and private channels if both the org-level and workspace-level policies are set to allow this.
Configure settings for a specific channel
You can also set a message retention policy for individual channels. Any custom retention settings will override the policy you've set in your Workspace Settings.
Note: Multi-workspace channels will always adhere to the organization retention policy. In cases where the org-level policy isn't set, the default is to keep all messages and files.
From your desktop, open the channel whose retention settings you'd like to configure.
Click the gear icon to open the Channel Settings menu.
ClickEdit message retention.
Select Use custom retention settings for this conversation.
Choose how long you'd like to save messages in this channel and clickSave.
Check the box next toYes, apply these new settings, then click the buttonApply Settings. A Slackbot message confirming these new settings will be posted in the channel the change was made for.
Tip: To set custom retention settings for a specific channel, you have to first enable the option to let members override the workspace message-retention policy.
File retention
When setting your file retention policy, there are two options to choose from:
Keep all filesSlack will keep all shared files for the lifetime of your workspace.
Keep all files, only for a set number of daysSlack willpermanently delete files ( snippets, posts, uploaded files, and those shared via apps like Dropbox or Google Drive) older than the number of days you choose.
Files shared via apps like Dropbox or Google Drive remain stored in the service they originate from. Deleting them from Slack won't impact the original files.

View ArticleYou can use the free version of Slack for as long as you'd like, but there are a few usage limits to consider:
Message visibility Only the most recent 10,000 messages can be viewed and searched.
File storage Add up to 5GB of files to your workspace.
Apps Install up to 10 third-party or custom apps.
Tip: Upgrading to a paid plan will remove message and app limits, and increase your workspace's file storage limit.
Message visibility limit
Members can send unlimited messages in Slack, but only the most recent 10,000 can be searched and viewed in your workspace. Keep in mind that you'll only be able to see messages in public channels, private channels you belong to, and your direct messages when searching.
If your workspace exceeds the message visibility limit, members can continue to send messages, but older messages will be archived. If you upgrade your workspace to a paid plan, all archived messages will become available again.
What counts as a message
Anything typed into the message field and sent to a channel or direct message counts as a message. A one-word message or single emoji is counted the same as a message with 500 words and multiple paragraphs.
Links, snippets, posts, uploaded files, replies in a thread, messages in archived channels, and messages from bot users all count towards your workspace's total number of messages sent.
Note: Deleted messages do not count towards the message limit.
File storage limit
On the free version of Slack, workspaces have up to 5GB of file storage available. Anything uploaded to a channel or a direct message (e.g., PDFs, documents, images, screenshots, audio and video files) counts towardsthis limit.
If your workspace reaches the limit, members can continue to upload files, but Slack will start archiving the oldest files to make room for new ones. Members won't be able to view archived files in channels, direct messages, or search results.
Like messages, archived files will immediately become available again if you upgrade to a paid plan. If you choose to upgrade, file storage limits will be determined by the total number of members (including Multi-Channel Guests ) in your workspace:
10GB per member on theStandard plan
20GB per member on thePlus plan
Note: Deleted files and files added to Slack via apps (like Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.) do not count towards the file storage limit.
App installation limit
Members of workspaces on the free version of Slack can add up to 10 apps. Apps from the Slack App Directory and custom apps built for your team count towards this limit.
If your workspace reaches the app installation limit, you can uninstall apps to make space for new ones, or upgrade to a paid plan to install as many apps as you'd like.
View ArticleData residency for Slack allows global teams to choose the region where certain types of data at rest are stored. You can contact our Sales team to set up data residency for your organization. Before you get started, here's what you should know:
We currently offer data storage in Frankfurt, Germany.
Customers must store all Slack data in a single region.
Customer data stored in Frankfurt is backed up in Paris, France.
Note: The data residency feature does not change any aspects of Slack other than the data storage location. Slack will continue to store and process all other categories of data in accordance with your written agreement for Slack Services and Slacks Privacy Policy.
How data residency for Slack works
Customer data
The following categories of customer data will be stored at rest in a data center within the Customers selected region as of the date data residency is enabled:
Messages, posts and snippets
Files (e.g., images, docs, etc.) uploaded to the Service
Search index of Customer Data
App- or bot-generated messages and files
Other categories of customer data, such as user profile information and channel names, channel topics and channel descriptions, may be delayed or unavailable for storage in the data residency region.
Other data
The following categories of data may be processed and stored in regions outside of the customers data region:
Workspace and channel membership information
Data used to measure seat count, usage, and revenue
Data used for analytics and to measure quality of service, e.g. Logs (sanitized logs)
IDs generated by Slack on behalf of the customer (UID, EID, TID)
Data migration
If a new workspace or Enterprise Grid org is set up in a data residency region, customer data will be stored in the selected region starting the date the workspace or org is created. For existing customers wishing to enable data residency, customer data can be migrated to a selected data region at any time. When a workspace or Enterprise Grid's data is migrated, all new user data will start residing in this region. However, old data will continue to live in the United States. Over time, Slack will migrate the data stored in the U.S. to the customers selected data region.
Shared channels
If two organizations connected by a shared channel are both in the same data region, all of their customer data will remain in that data region as well. If the organizations are located in different data regions, the following will happen:
Each organizations messages will live in their respective data regions.
The search index for the shared channel will live in both regions.
If the shared channel is disconnected, both organizations will get a copy of the other partys previously shared data.
Note: Enterprise Key Management (EKM) is not currently integrated with data residency, but we may offer this capability in the future.
Ready to get started? Contact our Sales team.
Who can use this feature?
Only the Primary Owner can enable data residency for a workspace or org
Plus and Enterprise Grid plans

View ArticleSlack gives engineers and developers a new way of building and shipping software. Becomefamiliar witheverything Slack'sAPI has to offer: Build internal tools, brilliant bots, and useful apps so you can share external information, streamline performance monitoring, and centralize communication with your development team and beyond!
Why should development teams use Slack?
Write, deploy, and debug code with the help of other apps.
Track bug notifications and change requests.
Work using agile methodologies and create efficient workflows.
Create internal integrations for your workspace.
Keep reading to learn how your software developmentteam can best leverage Slack.
Create and share snippets
Snippets are useful. They let youshare code, configuration files, and log files essential for letting developers know how the computer executes codeand what ithas to tell you in the form of logs.
When you create a snippet, you can select from over 60 different programming languages. Go ahead, create and share snippets with your workspace in a snap!
Need to share a plain text file? Upload the file in Slack and it will automatically convert to a snippet so everyone can read it easily without opening a separate application.
Keyboard shortcut: ShiftEnter (Mac) or CtrlShiftEnter (Windows) will open a pop-up window tocreate a new snippet in Slack.
Jira for Slack
In addition to code snippets (which are easy to download to share longer code), you can display shorter portions of text as fixed-width code and send it as a message in any channel.
Simplysurround your text with```triple backticks``` tocreate a block of pre-formatted, fixed-width text. Here's what it would look like in Slack:
Read on for more on how to format your messages.
Track bugs and change requests
Software development can be in constant flux, so integrate your issue and project tracking tools with Slack to help your team keep track of bug reports, change requests, and user feedback. (We'll tell you how to do this with webhooks and integrations !)
If you use a repository tool like GitHub, try integratingit with your workspace! With the two connected, you can create dedicated channels in Slack to track commits, pull requests, issues, and deploys.
Read GitHub for Slack to learn more.
Webhooks and integrations
Here at Slack, our team haschannels for #alerts-php, #cron-jobs, and #dev-ops! Incoming webhooks are a great way to automatically pipe information and data from external sources into a channel in Slack. Need to efficiently monitor cron jobs or batch scripts? Webhooks are the answer. (You can make them interactive, too!)
Heres what you might see in a dedicated #cron-jobs channel:
Our Slack API site shows you how to format your bot's messages so information is easy to read.
How to interactwith apps within Slack
Slash commands let Slack users interact with your app directly in Slack. We already have built-in commands like /remind and /mute to help you move around Slack more quickly but the possibilities are endless.
For example, connect Jira (or a similar app) with Slack to simplifythe bug reporting process for your team.Assigning theslash command/bugcouldnt be easier for your teammates to remember, and theydont even need to leave Slack to log a new bug.
How to build custominternal integrations for yourworkspace
Engineers and developers have the technical know-how to build internal integrations that are tailored precisely to your team. Using Slacks APIs, connect your third-party tools, external data sources, and custom workflows to Slack:
Focus work in one place.
Turn notifications into action.
Search across your systems.
Increase the visibility of how work gets done.
Learn more about how you can customize Slack with internal integrations.
Work using agile methodologies
Hold daily stand-up meetings
Give your team some time back by holding recurring meetings in Slack. To keep the meetings focused, consider creating a dedicated #stand-up channel just for everyones daily updates.
If some of your members work remotely ordon'tadhere to the traditional office environment, holding meetings in Slack gives everyone the ability to participate from whereverthey'relocated.
Use posts for technical specs and pin them to relevant channels
Make it easy for everyone to find details about the product youre building. Compose a post in Slack to document technical specs, project outlines, or to-do lists. Pin these items in relevant channels so you and your development team can refer to them later.
Track feedback, requests, and problems with emoji (and reacji!)
Coordinate your teams efforts by assigning one person each day to answer questions in a focused triage channel (#triage-ios, #triage-android, #triage-webapp, #triage-ops, etc.).
Here's how:
Update the channel topic to let everyone know whos on duty for the day, week, or month.
Encourage people to use specific emoji to indicate an issues severity. :red_circle: emoji means theissue is urgent. :blue_circle: emoji denotes a question or problem. :white_circle: emoji shows something is feedback.
Then use emoji reactionsto let others know youre working on the issue. :eyes:emoji reaction means "Im looking at this for you". :white_check_mark:emoji reaction means "Ive fixed the issue".
That's it! Here's an example of what that might look like in your #triage-webapp channel.
If your triage channel gets a lot of action, build a bot that scans the channel for specific emoji to help you keep track of outstanding issues.
Tip: Choose a custom emoji that represents the feature or project your team is working on. Get creative!
Apps for software developers
Weve listed a couple of examples here, but the Slack App Directory is chock-full of developer tools take your pick!
GitHub
GitHub makes it easy to store your Git projects and work together on them with your team. Connect GitHub to Slack to keep members in sync youll receive Slack notifications about commit events, pull requests, issue events, and deployment statuses.

View ArticleShared channels let two separate organizations work together in a single channel, each from their own Slack workspace. There are three components to creating a shared channel:
An organization sends an invitation link to another organization.
The receiving organization chooses to accept or decline the invitation.
If accepted, both organizations must approve the request to share a channel.
Note: To share a channel, both workspaces must be on a paid plan. If you're using the free version of Slack, learn how to upgrade your workspace. Read more about managing shared channels on the Standard and Plus and Enterprise Grid plans.
Who can create shared channels?
Any member (but not guests) can send or accept an invitation to share a channel. Before a channel is shared, the request must be approved by both organizations:
On the Standard and Plus plans, by default, only Workspace Owners and Workspace Admins can approve requests to share a channel.
On the Enterprise Grid plan, by default, only Org Owners and Org Admins can approve requests to share a channel.
Org Owners/Admins on the Enterprise Grid plan and Workspace Owners/Admins on the Standard and Plus planscan give others permission to approve requests to share a channel.
Create a shared channel
You can create a brand new channel to share with another organization, or you can share an existing channel.
Things to keep in mind
Sharing a channel gives another organization access to only that channel and not everything in your workspace.
When you share an existing channel, the other organization can view the channels message history, members, and any bots.
Members of both organizations can direct message each other ifthey'rea part of the same shared channel.
You can share any channel with one other workspace or Enterprise Grid org, except for the #general channel.
Send a shared channel invitation
Before you get started, youll need the contact information of someone from the other organization, such as an email address, phone number, or any communication platform you prefer. You can then send a shared channel invitation link to another organization the way youd share any link.
Create a new channel
Share an existing channel
Click the plus icon next to Channels in the left sidebar. For more details, see Create a channel.
Next to the link, clickCopy, thenDone.
Using thecontact information you have, share the invitation link outside of Slack. You can share this with one or multiple members of another organization.
From your desktop, open the channel you'd like to share.
Click the gear icon to open the Channel Settings menu.
Select Add people to channel.
Click Share this channel.
Next to the link, click Copy, then Done.
Using the contact information you have, share the invitation link outside of Slack. You can share this with one or multiple members of another organization.
Note: Shared channel invitations expire after seven days. If an invitation link expires before its accepted or approved, you can copy a new invitation link to share.
Accept a shared channel invitation
When you receive a shared channel invitation link from a member of another organization, you or anyone else in your workspace who also received the invitation can accept it. To decline an invitation, youdon'thave to take any action.
Click the invitation link.
Choose the workspace the shared channel will be a part of, or click Sign in to another workspace.
Review and accept the details, then click Accept Invitation.
Choose if youd like to change the channel name, or make it a public or private channel. Note that these changes will only apply to your workspace and not to the external organization.
Click Accept Invitation.
Tip: The same shared channel invitation link can be sent to multiple people. Only one member of your organization needs to accept the invitation link before its pending approval.
Approve or decline a request to share a channel
When someone in your organization accepts a shared channel invitation, a request will be sent to both organizations to review and approve. View Manage shared channels on the Standard and Plus plans or Manage shared channels on Enterprise Grid to learn how.

View ArticleShared channels let two separate organizations work together in a single channel, each from their own Slack workspace. Use shared channels to focus your communication with organizations you work with regularly, like clients, vendors, and partners. With this feature, we've taken added precautions to protect your privacy and keep your workspace or Enterprise Grid org secure.
Shared channel requests
Approve a request to share a channel
The request to share a channel must be approved by both workspaces before the channel is connected. By default, only these individuals can approve a request to share a channel:
Standard and Plus plans: Workspace Owners and Admins
Enterprise Grid plan: Org Owners and Admins
A shared channel request will include the external organization's name and workspace name. Use this information to identify the sender and confirm that someone from your workspace or Enterprise Grid org needs access to this channel.
Decline a request to share a channel
If you're unsure what a proposed shared channel is for or who the request is from, you have a few options:
Don't accept the request to share a channel. You can decline any request your receive.
Ask your members for more info about the request if they're already working with the sender in some capacity.
Contact the sender for clarification.
Message and file retention
Custom message and file retention policies aren't supported. All messages and files shared in a shared channel and related direct messages will abide by the default setting, keep all messages.
Message editing and deletion
Message editing and deletion settings for your workspace or Enterprise Grid org will apply to shared channels. For example, A Workspace Admin can delete messages sent by members of their workspace, but not those sent from a member of an external organization.
Export tools and Data Loss Protection (DLP)
On the Standard and Plus plans, Workspace Owners and Admins can use Standard Export to export content from shared channels. On the Plus plan, Workspace Owners can apply to access Corporate Export to export content all shared channels (public or private) and the related direct messages shared across two workspaces.
Both workspaces can read content or data posted in a shared channel, but only the workspace that sent the data may edit or delete it from Slack.
Review our guide to export tools to read more about these options.
View ArticleShared channels let two separate organizations work together in a single channel, each from their own Slack workspace. Here's what members of the same shared channel can do:
Send and read messages in the channel
Exchange direct messages with other members
Upload files, and use apps and integrations
Who can create shared channels
Shared channels are available on the Standard, Plus, and Enterprise Grid plans. Everyone (except guests) can send and accept an invitation to share a channel with another organization.
Before a channel is shared, the request to share the channel needs to be approved by someone with permission to manage shared channels from both organizations. View Create shared channels to learn more.
How to work in shared channels
Shared channels are a lot like other channels in Slack, but there are some differences to keep in mind. Heres what to expect when you work in a shared channel.
Identify a shared channel
A shared channel will have a diamond icon next to the channel name, and the external organization's name will appear above the message field. Enterprise Key Management customers
View a member's profile and status
Members of a shared channel can see each others full profiles and profile photos. When working with external members, you'll see their organization's Slack icon on their profile photos, and they'll see yours too. Keep in mind that only members of your workspace can see ifyou've set a status in Slack.
Manage channel details
A shared channel is a common place for two separate organizations to work together, but each workspace can have a different channel name, topic, purpose, and decide if the channel is public or private.
Use custom emoji
Members of the other workspace in your shared channel can only see your workspaces custom emoji whenthey'reused as emoji reactions. Members outside of your workspacewon'tsee your custom emoji in their emoji picker or be able to see them if included in a message.
Use apps and integrations
You can use apps and integrations in shared channels just like any other channel. All members can see messages from bots and apps, and even message another workspaces bot user if its been added to the channel.
Keep in mind that your slash commands will only work in your workspace, and that members of the other organization can't use Actions for apps and third-party tools that have been connected to your workspace.
Shared channels and Enterprise Key Management (EKM)
will be able to use shared channels; however, messages and files sent in shared channels are not currently encryptable using your own keys.
Messages and files in all other channels within Slack will still be encrypted using your keys. Once EKM becomes supported across shared channels, EKM will retroactively apply to all your messages and files in shared channels.

Step 1: Choose an EMM provider
Connect with a Slack for EMM provider to learn more and set up your account. We work with several EMM providers like AirWatch, MobileIron, and Blackberry to verify our services are compatible.
Tip: Review the mobile device requirements for Slack for EMM.
Step 2: Turn on EMM
Contact Slack when you're ready to activate or change the mobile security settings for your organization. Below is the information we'll need from you to make these updates.
Choose who is affected
Only members using an approved device can access your organization's workspaces. Select one of the options below:
All members (excluding guests) will be required to update to the Slack for EMM app. Guests can sign in from any device.
All members (including guests) will be required to update to the Slack for EMM app and must use an approved device to access Slack.
All members and guestscan use either the regular Slack app or the Slack for EMM app and sign in from any device.
Customize your message
Members required to use the Slack for EMM app will have 72 hours to switch before they're signed out on mobile. To help your members transition, we recommend sharing upcoming EMM changes before turning them on.
Once EMM is enabled, members will get an email with more information. In the email, you can include a custom message, such as a link to an internal guide or contact info for your company's helpdesk. Here's what the email will include:
A message that explains their company has updated mobile security.
The date and time members must access Slack on approved devices using the Slack for EMM app.
Instructions to access and install the EMM app for Slack.
Tip:To include a custom message for your members, you must add it at the time you turn on EMM.
Step 3: Configure additional settings
Navigate to Security Settings in the Org Dashboard to enable app-level settings for all org members not managed by EMM. To further protect your org's data, you can choose to block file downloads and copying content, require secondary authentication, or require a mandatory mobile browser on unmanaged mobile devices. The latest version of the Slack app is required.
What members can expect
If required, they'll need to switch to the Slack for EMM app.Once installed, members can sign in using their single sign-on credentials.
If required, they can't access your org from an unmanaged device. If the Slack for EMM app is required, members using an unmanaged device will see a screen letting them know they'll need to use an approved device. Slack will send them an email with instructions from the custom message you provided in step 2 above.
Note:You can whitelist an org domain to ensure that members can only access corporate workspaces in the Slack for EMM app. Set up this configuration through your EMM provider.

ClickAdd Rule.
Create a rule to send LDAP attributes as claims. Only the outgoing claim type User.Email is required, but you may want to include first_name, last_name, and User.Username. Remember, outgoing claim types are case sensitive.Note: The value sent for User.Username will correspond to a user's username. Ensure this value is unique for each user and will not be re-used
Next, create another rule to transform an incoming claim.
Open the requiredNameID claim rule, and change theoutgoing name ID format toPersistent Identifier. Then, clickOKto save.
Note: If you opt to sign the AuthnRequest in Slack, youll need to upload the generated Slack certificate to the Signature tab in ADFS. Youll also need to ensure thatyou'veselected the secure hash algorithm SHA-1 in the Advanced tab.
