How difficult is it to maintain a social life while in your job at Spredfast?
Unless your friends are the people you work with and you are socializing at work, it can be downright impossible. Between On-Call, Product Outages, Rotating Schedules, Extra OT Hours due to short staffing, you will go to bed late, because of working, then dream about working, just to get up early to get more work done.
What's one thing you wish you'd known before joining Spredfast?
The boy's club atmosphere and the aggressive nature towards women by women in leadership. If you are a female and have a female leader, there is a good chance you will be working twice as hard as everyone else, but still receiving the blame for things that go wrong. You will also find it hard to move up due to cattiness with a female leader. They act like they are afraid you are going to take their job. If you have a family and are in an entry level position or even mid level position and are a woman, there is a chance you will never reach your career goals. You will hear from male (and female) leaders that "You are a wife & mother and we feel like we need to get you into a role that better suits that." Doesn't matter if you work a gazillion hours of overtime to make sure the job is done or to make up for being understaffed, that you are always willing to help and support your team, or if you already do the responsibilities of the wanted position. You will have to fight 2x as hard
How's the morale at Spredfast?
Eh. It was high initially, then they sublet the Brazos office and moved everyone to Chavez. Morale on the dev side went down some. Then as it started to go back up Shoutlet was acquired. The morale began to drop out of fear that they'd be laid off. After promises of no layoffs, morale went back up, just to have a huge amount of layoffs in February and letting almost all of the Madison office know that come August, they will be unemployed. Morale significantly dropped. It might be slowly creeping up, but I think everyone is worried their head is on the chopping block still.
How much diversity is there among employees at Spredfast?
It's a boy's club, even though there are a lot of women that work there. Mostly white males with some white females mixed in. A handful of other races, but very few of some. Some LBGTQ members and everyone is very supportive of everyone's lifestyles.
What's the office layout like at Spredfast?
Very open, which can definitely be a bad thing at times, since it can be loud. Lots of conferences rooms, but definitely not enough, and lots of flex area, where you can eat, work, socialize, run scrums, etc. Don't touch the "living" wall though, 9 out of 10 times someone will bite your head off for it.
What unique perks and benefits does Spredfast provide?
Free Beer, Alcohol, Snacks, Lunch Daily (whole foods catered- the menu can be bland or gross, cafeteria fish day - big thumbs down), Reimbursement of some of the cost of either parking or transit, lots of uncomfortable chairs, decent healthcare (the PPO is great if you have kids, all doctor's appointments with standard primary care physicians are free), You Earned It, Petting Zoos, pretty decent Christmas parties
What's the pay like for Customer Support roles at Spredfast?
Average for most positions. Higher positions within support, that are not actually leadership, are under paid by Austin Market Standards, but entry level is pretty standard. They also expense cell phones, part of parking or train passes.
What's the Customer Support team like at Spredfast?
The people on the support team are awesome. You make great friendships, they are accepting of most people, and they constantly try to include each other (even if you don't want to be included). They are a sarcastic, fowl mouthed, like to pick on each other out of love, kind of support family. There are some team members that do not pull their weight at times, however most of the times everyone is willing to help and teach someone else. The company doesn't give enough recognition to the support team members (NOT LEADERSHIP) on how much OT they pull to get the job done.
What's the vibe like in the Customer Support dept at Spredfast? How many hours are you working?
Too many hours. The work/life balance was awful previously and I highly doubt it has changed much. Support is always understaffed and the leadership isn't organized, which means the team is always underwater. Thank god they pay you when you work overtime, but the amount of tickets vs the amount of people ratio is too high. Earlier in 2017 there were weeks that members were working 10-20 hours of OT per week. Great for paychecks, awful for having a life away from support.
