Frequently Asked Questions About Udemy

  • If you've incurred an error while attempting to make a payment, this article explains how to solve common reasons for payment issues. If you encountered a payment error message which told you to contact support directly, however, please click here. Otherwise, please try the troubleshooting steps outlined below.

If you’re encountering issues with one payment method, please note we support several different payment methods that you can try. For information regarding how Udemy courses are priced, please click here.

Common Reasons For Failed Card Payments

    Incorrectly Entered Information

Incorrect name: please ensure you enter the first and last name of the card account holder, exactly as it appears on the card, and that you enter it in the Name on Card field. For example, if the card account holder’s name reads John R. Doe, then John R. Doe must be entered, as shown below.

    clear your browser’s cache

Incorrect CVC code: please ensure you’re only entering numbers and that the code is correct, as listed on the back of the card.

Incorrect postal code or code is not applicable: if your payment failure states it is due to a zip code or postal code error, please contact your bank to ensure they have the right one on file. If zip codes aren't applicable in your country, however, and you still see a zip code field, please try entering all zeros (00000).

    Update Saved Payment Method

If you’re encountering issues while trying to purchase with a saved payment method, try deleting it and re-adding it to ensure the details are correct and up to date. You can also add a new card.

Using a Debit Card Not Authorized For International Purchases

Udemy is based in the United States, and debit cards in many countries do not allow foreign transactions. If you do not see a local payment option when checking out on Udemy, and you’re encountering a payment issue, call your bank to ensure your card is authorized for international purchases. Udemy is not able to remove these restrictions.

Issuing Country For The Card is Different From Country of Residence

If the issuing country for your card is different from your country of residence, your card might not be approved. If you experience trouble using the card, please try another payment method we offer, or contact your bank.

Attempting Payments While Using a VPN

Multiple IP addresses can result in authorization problems and failed transactions. We advise that you refrain from using a virtual private network (VPN) while making a purchase on Udemy.

Too Many Payment Attempts Have Been Made in The Last 24 Hours

Some cards have usage limitations, and will automatically block payment attempts after a certain threshold has been reached. If you’ve used your card a lot in the last 24 hours, try contacting your bank, or try using a different payment method.

Using a Rocketmail Email Address For Your Account

Payment attempts from Udemy accounts with Rocketmail addresses will not be accepted by our system. Please try changing your email address to a non-Rocketmail domain and try again.

Browser Isn’t Working Correctly Due to Caching Issues

If you're sure you're entering the right card number, but you’re seeing a notification it looks invalid, or the pay button isn't showing up, there may be a caching issue. Please and try again.

Still Stuck? Your Bank Should Have More Information

Some of the most common reasons banks decline payments include insufficient funds, card purchase limitations, and card security policies, among other issues. Since Udemy does not have detailed insights into why a payment is declined, we recommend contacting your bank or financial institution directly to help solve the payment issue. Udemy will be happy to help if your error message says to contact our support team.

It’s important to let your bank know that you would like to make a payment on Udemy.com, Udemy is a company based in the United States, and that we do not bill recurringly.

  • If you’re encountering audio or video issues while attempting to watch a course on a browser, this article explains various ways to troubleshoot these problems. Our support team will also follow this guide when responding to inquiries regarding video playback.

Please note that a broadband connection with a minimum speed of 5Mbit or 800kbps is required to watch a Udemy course on your device. The rest of Udemy’s system requirements are listed here.

If you're encountering issues while watching courses on Udemy's mobile app, please click here.

Determine if your environment’s causing the issue

To determine whether your device, settings or internet connection may be causing the problem, please try watching another lecture or course (if you are only enrolled in one course, steps on how to preview a course can be viewed here ).

If you’re able to watch other lectures without any problems, this indicates there is a technical issue with the original video. Please contact support so our team can investigate further and report the issue.

If you’re encountering playback issues with other lectures, however, then please try the troubleshooting steps outlined below.

Troubleshooting issues with your course playing environment

If you’ve determined the problem is due to an issue with your course playing environment, please do the following:

Try watching the original lecture in an incognito window.

If the video plays without issue, try checking your extension, plugin or firewall program on your device to see if it needs to be reconfigured or disabled.

Try a different browser. If you’re not already using Google Chrome, we recommend using it, as we’ve found it works best to watch Udemy courses.

Clear your browser's cookies and cache and restart it before trying again.

If you have a lot of browser tabs open, close most of them except the one you’re using to watch the course.

Check your browser version and update it if needed.

A minimum internet speed of 5Mbit or 800kbps is required to watch a Udemy course on your device. Test your internet connection speed to make sure your environment meets this and that your system meets Udemy’s requirements. If your internet speed is low, try lowering the video quality of the lecture, or watching the course when your internet connection is stronger.

Turn off any hardware acceleration you have installed (in Firefox or on Windows ).

If you can’t hear any audio, double check to see that the course player volume is turned up and that the video is not muted. Check the sound settings on your device.

Restart your computer and network devices (modems/switches/routers).

In the interim, if the course is available for downloading, try watching it offline or on the mobile app.

  • If you want to make purchasing courses faster and easier, you can securely save your credit or debit card information in your Udemy account. This way you will not need to re-enter the card information each time you purchase a course.

    Credit Card Security

Udemy never stores your full credit or debit card information on our systems. Instead, we work with credit card payment processors who are certified under the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS).

When you enter your credit or debit card details on Udemy, that information is sent directly to secure databases maintained by these payment processors, who then complete the transaction. That partner will then provide us with a portion of the stored information (such as the last four digits of your card number) to help do things like document your purchases and label your saved cards.

During this process, our partner will also provide us with a randomly generated alphanumeric ID called a "token". This token allows us to reference a saved card during future transactions, even though we don’t have the full card number on file ourselves. Because we store a token instead of the full credit card number you originally provided, there is no way for anyone who is logged in to your Udemy account to obtain your full credit card information from within your account. In addition, there is no way for a third party to reverse-engineer a token ID to obtain the credit card information.

    Adjusting Your Transaction Information Settings

You can have the system automatically select your saved card for a purchase, by turning on the Keep transaction information for further purchases option. If this option is turned off, however, then no card’s information will be entered, and the payment page will not select the Remember this card box.

To either activate or disable this option, please follow the steps below:

Move the cursor to your profile picture at the top right of the page

Click Payment Methods from the dropdown menu

Toggle on or off the Keeptransaction informationfor further purchases option

    support team.

How to Save Your Credit Card Information

If you wish to save your credit card information, so that you don’t need to re-enter it next time you purchase a course, please follow these steps:

    Click Take This Course

Enter the credit card information (under Add new card)

Make sure the Remember this card box is selected

Hit Pay and the card’s information will be saved in your account

Purchasing a Course With a Saved Card

If you saved your card information during a previous purchase, you can quickly use that card again to purchase another course without re-entering it.

If theKeep transaction information for further purchasesoption is turned on in your account, then the card’s information will automatically appear. If you have more than one credit card saved, however, then you can select which one you would like to use for the purchase.

Editing and Deleting Cards in Your Account

If you’ve saved your cards and would like to edit or delete the information in your account, please follow these steps:

Move the cursor to your profile picture at the top right of the page

Click Payment Methods from the dropdown menu

You can edit the credit card information by clicking on Update (once you've finished click Update again), or remove it from your account by clickingDelete

  • There is no fee to create and host a course on Udemy, and you can publish as many free and paid courses as you like. We believe in a sustainable partnership, where instructors are rewarded for creating amazing content and bringing students to the platform, and Udemy is rewarded for driving new students to our instructors.

    Instructor Revenue Share Overview

While we encourage you to take a look at the official Promotions Policy ( link here ), a summary of common revenue share scenarios is provided below. Please note these are revenue share on Net Revenue, which is defined here :

Instructor Promotion: 97\% revenue share on sales made by instructors where the student purchases their course using an Instructor’s coupon or course referral link (there is a 3\% administrative processing fee, 4\% in the territory of Japan)

Udemy Organic:50\% revenue share on organic Udemy sales where no Instructor Coupon is used. Udemy and the instructor share equally on these sales, which might occur after a user browses the Udemy marketplace for courses, or makes a purchase via a Udemy promotion

Note on In-App Purchases:For sales on the Udemy iOS and Android apps, Apple and Google charge a 30\% fee on the total sale.

Paid User Acquisition Channel Sales:25\% instructor revenue share in most cases. In order to optimize your sales, we partner with affiliates across our global networks or pay for advertising for your course (you can control your inclusion via the Udemy Marketing Boost program, more info here ).

Depending on the partner or the costs of the advertising, the revenue share may vary but will be25\% in most cases.Udemy sets aside 75\% to pay for advertising costs and/or partner payouts that help us acquire those new users.

    Reporting

Instructors can track all incoming sales in their Revenue Report. The report includes the date of purchase, student name, revenue channel attribution, total price paid and your revenue.

Additionally, exports in a .csv file are available for each month of revenue you earn, to track your sales and revenue share data (more info here ).

    Reasons for Denied Refunds

While our 30-day refund policy is in place to protect students, we must also protect our instructors from fraud and provide them a reasonable payment schedule. Payments are sent to instructors after 30 days, so we will not process refund requests received after the refund window.

If all course content was downloaded before the refund was requested, the refund request may be rejected. Finally, students who purchase and refund multiple courses over an extended period may be subject to suspension for abuse of the refund policy.

  • If you've tried purchasing a course on the Udemy mobile app, but are unable to locate it in your account, then please try one of the troubleshooting steps below.

    Payment in Progress

The transaction may have been disrupted.Check to see if you received a receipt from the App Store (iOS app) or Google Play (Android app). If you did not receive a receipt, the payment did not go through. Try again on the app, or you can purchase it from the site. If you did receive a receipt, please contact our support team and attach the receipt.

If the course was purchased through the iOS app, you may want to check the status of your transaction, and see if the status is "Pending". This means the course has not been delivered to your account yet since Apple's payment system is still processing the transaction. If it is "Pending", it may take between 24 - 48 hours for the course to be delivered to your account. If you no longer see "Pending" status for the Apple purchase but you do not have your course delivered to your account, please forward to us a screenshot/email of your App Store receipt. This will help us get the course up-and-running for you.

    Still Having Trouble?

If you still can't find your course, please contact our support team with the following information:

A copy of the full receipt. We'll need to know the exact title of the course so wecan make sure the right one gets delivered to you. We just want to make sure we don't give you a Bootstrap course instead of a Yoga course!

A screenshot of theerror you received. This will let us know what happened. Plus, if you've seen a bunch of courses with similar titles (I'm looking at all the Microsoft Excel courses out there), it will also be helpful to have a screenshot of the course itself as well to avoid confusion.

Your Udemy account information. Let usknow which e-mail address you used to make the purchase on the app. Note: This is NOT the same as your Apple App Store/Google Play account! This is the email linked to your Udemy account.

  • Udemy wants you to be satisfied with the course you enroll in, and as a result, course purchases can be refunded within 30 days. If you have already requested a refund, but are wondering about the refund status, then please read our commonly asked questions below.

For more information on our refund policy, or how to make a refund request, please click here.

I requested a refund more than 10 business days ago, but I still do not see it in my bank account. Where is my refund?

While most refunds process within 5-10 business days, depending on your financial institution, some refunds may not post to your account for up to 30 days. If it has been more than 10 business days since the refund was processed by Udemy, however, please contact your bank directly to inquire about the status of the refund. If the bank does not see the refund in their records, please contact our support team.

What is the difference between a refund and a purchase reversal?

Most refunds that are processed within 24 hours of a purchase are processed as reversals. What this means is that the original charge will be removed from your bank or credit card statement, usually within 5 business days. If it is a reversal, then you will not see the refunds credited back to your account, since they were never withdrawn. If you still see the charge after 5 business days, however, please contact our support team.

I requested a refund for a course I purchased using PayPal, but I still don’t see my funds?

If you purchased a course using PayPal, then typically it takes 3-5 business days for the refund to be processed and for the money to become available in your PayPal balance. If you have not received your refund after 5 business days, however, please contact PayPal support.

If PayPal does not see a refund in their records then please contact our support team.

It has been more than 30 days since I requested my refund but I haven’t received it yet. What do I do now?

If it has been more than 30 days since you requested a refund, and you still haven’t received it, then please contact our support team.

What happens if the instructor removes the course from Udemy?

We host more than 150,000 courses on our online learning marketplace. Our marketplace model means we do not own the copyright to the content of the courses; the respective instructors own these rights. On rare occasions, instructors may remove their courses from our marketplace, or, Udemy may have to remove a course from the platform for policy or legal reasons. If this does happen to a course you're enrolled in, please contact us and we'll be ready to help.

Please note: occasionally instructors may decide to unpublish their course and close it to additional enrollments. For example, an instructor might unpublish an older course until they’ve had a chance to update the course content. In situations where an instructor unpublishes their course, however, the course content remains on the platform and is still accessible to students who are enrolled in the course.

Can my courses ever be removed from Udemy?

  • What is IRS Withholding?

Withholding tax is a type of tax on income derived from certain types of sales. Withholding is distinct from sales tax, which is paid by the consumer on purchase of an item (like a course). Sales tax is charged to students at the point of sale. Withholding is calculated at the time of payout.

As a U.S.-based company, Udemy has to follow guidance from the U.S. Internal Revenue Service to determine if tax should be withheld from instructors’ monthly payments.

What will my withholding rate be?

Generally, IRS withholding only applies to course purchases made by students from the U.S. Your rate of withholding will depend on a number of factors, most importantly your country of tax citizenship. We can’t tell you exactly what rate of withholding will apply to your Udemy earnings until your form is submitted and approved, but when we do begin automatically withholding, you’ll be able to see the rate in your revenue report.

If we have your tax form on file, your withholding rate for these purchases will depend on the details of your submission, including whether your country has negotiated a tax treaty with the U.S.

For instructors in the U.S. who supply a valid W-9 and are not subject to backup withholding, the rate of IRS withholding is 0\%.

If we don’t have your tax form on file, we will be required to apply the maximum withholding rate for all sales, regardless of country of citizenship.

What happens if I don’t submit a tax form?

Udemy is giving all instructors time to fill out the necessary forms. If we don’t have an instructors’ your tax information on file, we’ll pause your next payout and remind you again to submit.

If at that point we still don’t have your tax information, we’ll be required to default to the highest potential level of withholding on your revenue and we’ll resume sending payouts (no longer holding them), so that we can minimize your risk of noncompliance.

This might mean that we withhold more from your payouts than the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) actually requires. Depending on your circumstances, there may be avenuesfor instructors to recoup funds that were withheld in excess of your legal obligation.

  • When you complete a Udemy course, you will receive a certificate of completion, which you can share with your friends, relatives, co-workers and potential employers. Certificates of completion help demonstrate your accomplishments, but please note Udemy is not an accredited institution, and as a result, the certificates cannot be used for formal accreditation.

Certificate of completion: commonly asked auestions

Below are commonly asked questions we receive regarding Udemy’s certificates of completion.

I finished my course but I still can’t access my certificate of completion. How come?

In order to receive your certificate of completion, each curriculum item must be marked as complete. Double-check the course curriculum in the course player to make sure each lecture and course item has a checkmark beside it and is marked as complete.

For steps on how to manually mark a lecture as complete, please click here.

I’ve completed my course and the trophy has appeared, but when I click on it, I can’t see a certificate. Why?

Occasionally the system may need a few moments to generate a certificate of completion, after a course has been completed. Wait a couple of minutes and then try clicking on the trophy again. You may also need to refresh the page, or clear your cache and cookies, in order to see your certificate.

Do practice test-only courses offer certificates of completion?

No. Currently, courses that only include practice tests, and no other curriculum items like lectures, quizzes etc, do not offer a certificate of completion.

How can I change the language of my certificate of completion?

Certificates of completion are generated in the same language that is set for your account. If you need to change the language of your certificate, however, you can easily do so by following these steps:

    1. When all of the curriculum items of a course are completed, click the green trophy on the course page to access your certificate.

My certificate has my account’s username on it, instead of my real name. How can I change it?

Next, click Update your profile name to proceed to your profile page. Change your name there to what you want to be included on your certificate, and click Save. Then click Save changes on the certificate page to reset your certificate.

We will send you an email to confirm when your updated certificate is ready. Please note it may take a few minutes to update the certificate’s name. You may need to refresh the page in order to see your updated certificate.

As a result, the customized receipt will indicate the address for Udemy, Inc. in San Francisco, as that is the entity that took the payment.

Please note that instead of using a simple lifetime average, Udemy calculates a course's average star rating by considering a number of different factors such as the number of ratings, the age of ratings, and the likelihood of fraudulent ratings.

Below the ratings are the reviews students have submitted for the course. Reviews include comments from the student about the courses, as well as their rating for it. As a result, student reviews can be very helpful in helping you determine whether the course will meet your educational goals.

In addition, this section may also include a Featured Review, which highlights a positive experience a student had with the course.

  • Are you ready to pass the certification exam you’ve been studying for? Find out by testing yourself with Udemy’s new practice test feature. The practice tests provide an entire exam’s worth of questions, enabling you to confirm your mastery and providing you with the confidence you’ll need to take your certification exam.

The practice test are timed, so you’ll know when you’re taking more time than the official test allows, and at the end of the test you’ll receive a personal breakdown of the questions you answered correctly and incorrectly to help you continually improve. You’ll also be able to see an explanation for each question at the end of the test to help you avoid making the same mistakes when taking the exam.

Here are some of the frequently asked questions we expect from students regarding this new and exciting feature.

How will I know which courses offer these exams?

If a course includes a practice test you will see the banner below posted on the course landing page.

    support team.

Note that the courses that have “Practice Tests” in the title only contain practice tests.

Is there an additional charge to take the practice test?

No. If a course offers a practice test it will be included in the course purchase. You will not need to pay any additional fee to take the practice test.

Can I take the practice test more than once?

Absolutely. Just like our quiz feature, you can go back and retake the practice exam as many times as you wish.

Once you have completed the exam, the option to “Retake Test” ” will appear on the right hand side. Just click on that and you can retake the practice test.

Will I be notified if I take longer than the time allotted to complete the exam?

Yes. The practice tests include a timer, which is set to match the same amount of time that’s allowed for the official, certifying exam. If you go past the time allotted, the practice test will alert you.

Do I have to finish the exam once I’ve started it? Or can I pause it and return to the practice test later?

If you need to leave during the practice test, or decide that you want to work on something else, the feature will automatically pause the exam and the test’s timer. So, when you’re ready to return to the practice test you can resume where you left off!

How do I submit my answer for the question?

Once you’ve selected the answer you wish to enter, click on Next at the bottom right of the practice test screen.

You can also click on the “Mark For Review” button at the bottom left, for questions you would like to take a closer look at after you complete the test.

Will the practice test show my final score?

Yes. When you’ve completed the practice test your final score will be posted. In addition, the ratio of correct answers versus incorrect answers you entered will be shown, based on knowledge area. You can also review all your answers by clicking on “Review Questions”.

    Can I review my answers?

Yes. You can review all the answers you submitted by clicking on “Review Questions” after you’ve completed an exam, and see which questions you got right or wrong. You can also search through them for specific subjects in the exam using the “Knowledge Areas” filter. • Introduction

The W-8BEN is the most common form for non-U.S. instructors who are individuals. You should fill out the W-8BEN if you are “a foreign person” and the beneficial owner of “an amount subject to withholding” (such as Udemy earnings derived from U.S. students).

Because we know many non-U.S. instructors will be filling out a W-8BEN and may not have encountered U.S. tax forms before, we’ve provided some general information about the tax form platform for the W-8BEN below. These instructions are adapted from the official IRS instructions for the W-8BEN, available in English on the IRS website.

For questions about your specific tax details, you’ll need to consult a tax advisor. Udemy is not legally permitted to advise you on how your specific circumstances should be represented on your tax forms.

    Table of Contents

    Basic details

    United States citizenship status

    Taxpayer Identification Number

    Treaty claim

    Special rates & conditions

    Basic details

Summary: On this page, you’ll be asked for some basic information about yourself, such as your name, residential address, and taxpayer identification number. This page is the same for all tax forms, but the information you enter may determine what questions you’re prompted to answer later in the process.

    Common instructor questions:

I am a citizen of one country, but a resident of another. What am I supposed to enter under “country of citizenship”?

The IRS writes that if you are “not a resident in any country in which you have citizenship”, you should enter “the country where you were most recently a resident.”

For example, if you’re a citizen of Atlantis but currently living in Malaysia, and you’re not a resident of Atlantis anymore, you would enter Malaysia as your “country of citizenship” on line 2.

To my knowledge, I don’t have a taxpayer identification number in my country. What should I enter?

For non-U.S. instructors, your TIN will be the taxpayer identification number issued by your local government. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) provides a helpful page in English here that details the names and formats that various countries use as TINs.

I’m having trouble entering my Taxpayer Identification Number. What’s going on?

The Udemy tax form platform uses the country you enter to pre-format your TIN. However, it’s possible that your TIN format may not perfectly match your country’s standard TIN format. If that’s the case, simply check the box for “TIN format non-standard” and enter your TIN.

    United States citizenship status

Summary text: On this page, you’ll provide additional details about your relationship with the United States. This will help us determine if you should actually be considered a U.S. person for tax purposes, even though you live outside the U.S.

    Common instructor questions:

Why can’t I edit my country of citizenship?

The country of citizenship shown on this page pre-populates based on your selection from the “Basic details” page. If you want to edit your country of citizenship, you’ll need to use the “Back” button to return to the previous page.

As with the “country of citizenship” question on the “Basic details” page, your “country of citizenship” is your most recent residential country (your “tax citizenship”).

    Taxpayer Identification Number

Summary: On this page, you’ll confirm that your taxpayer identity information is correct.

    Common instructor questions:

Why am I being asked to provide my TIN again?

Your TIN is crucial to confirming your taxpayer identity and correctly calculating any applicable withholding. If you do not enter a valid TIN, Udemy will need to withhold at the maximum rate regardless of any other information you provide. This page is here so you can confirm that you’ve correctly entered your TIN.

    Treaty claim

Summary: On this page, you may claim the benefits of any tax treaty between your country and the United States and reduce your rate of withholding.

    Common instructor questions:

Do I have to make a treaty claim to receive a reduced rate of withholding?

Yes. If you live in a country with a tax treaty that would reduce your rate of withholding, you must claim the benefits of the treaty on this page for the reduction to apply.

If you’re unfamiliar with IRS withholding, here’s a little more detail:

By default, Udemy must withhold 30\% of income from U.S. student sales when paying out non-U.S. instructors. If you make a valid tax form submission without a treaty claim, you’ll see that 30\% rate applied to the portion of your income derived from your U.S. students. (No IRS withholding will apply for income from non-U.S. students.)

However, many countries have treaties with the United States that reduce this rate, sometimes even to 0\%. The IRS provides an English list of these treaties here. Your Udemy earnings are considered “copyright royalties,” so please refer to that section of the PDF to see if your country has an applicable treaty.

I’d like to make a treaty claim, but my country isn’t listed. Why?

Our tax platform will only let you select countries with applicable tax treaties. If you’ve indicated you’d like to make a treaty claim, but your country isn’t listed on the dropdown menu, your country does not have an applicable tax treaty, and you will need to decline to make a treaty claim.

    Special rates & conditions

Summary: On this page, you can let us know if you have any less common circumstances that require you to give additional details about your tax treaty claim.

    Common instructor questions:

How is this different from the regular treaty claim?

For this section, you should only select "Yes" and proceed through the flow if you are claiming specific treaty benefits that require you to meet conditions you haven't already declared in your submission. For example, for copyright royalty income, you must complete this line if your country's treaty specifies different withholding rates for different kinds of royalties.

See the IRS's Tax Treaty Table (February 2019 version available in English here ) for more about the treaty rates that different countries have negotiated with the U.S.

    Legal certification

Summary: On this page, you’ll confirm that the information you’ve provided is complete and accurate, in preparation for your electronic signature in the final step of the process.

    Common instructor questions:

Some of the legal certifications aren’t relevant to me, but I can’t proceed without checking the boxes. What should I do?

Our platform treats each certification from Part III of the W-8BEN as an individual checkbox. On the original W-8BEN form, these are simply bullet points before the final signature, so they cover all possible scenarios in which an individual might be submitting the form. Checking the box confirms that you have reviewed the statement, and that if it applies to you, it’s correct.

For example, one of the certifications reads: “The person named on line 1 of this form is a resident of the treaty country listed on line 9 of the form (if any).” If you did not make a treaty claim, then the phrase “if any” indicates that this statement doesn’t apply to you.

As an additional example, another of the certifications reads: “For broker transactions or barter exchanges, the beneficial owner is an exempt foreign person as defined in the instructions.” Since you aren’t submitting this form to cover income from broker transactions or barter exchanges (your Udemy income is considered copyright royalties), this statement doesn’t apply to you.

Millions of students enroll in courses every year through the Udemy Deals Program, and both the Percentage Promotions and the Fixed Price Promotions are powerful levers to help you maximize your revenue potential on Udemy. You can opt out of this program at any time by editing your promotional agreements.

    Percentage Promotions

    Fixed Price Promotions

The “Fixed-Price Promotions” program allows Udemy to offer Your Course for a fixed price that is less than the base price, but no less than approximately $10 USD (e.g., $10, $19 or $29 deals) except in Australia, Brazil, Mexico, India, Turkey and South Africa. Please note, the sale price under fixed-price promotions may represent a discount exceeding 75\% depending on the applicable base price.

How to Edit Your Instructor Promotional Agreements

To change your promotional agreements please follow the steps below:

Move your cursor to your profile picture in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

Click on Payout settings from the dropdown menu.

In addition to on-site promotions, please note that Udemy employs a variety of other marketing channels for instructors in the Deals Program (including emails, paid ads, affiliate marketing). It may take some time after your opt-out date before your courses are no longer promoted via these channels, but your courses will no longer be offered at a discount on the Udemy site 10 days after your opt-out date. This 10 day period helps ensure we honor discounts that have already been offered to students in active campaigns.

Your course will not be included, however, in new campaigns that are created after you opted out.

If you have not yet verified your identity with Udemy, you will be prompted to complete instructor verificationwhen you're ready to submit a new course for review. When your first course has been uploaded and is ready to be published, Udemy will guide you through the automated verification process. • We understand how valuable your content is and are committed to helping you protect it.

Udemy employs anti-piracy technology, including encoding videos using a proprietary player and attaching a Udemy watermark to all videos. This is why, when you load a video to Udemy, there is both uploading AND "processing" time, because we are encoding your videos to make them difficult to steal.

For a motivated Pirate, however, any content that appears on a computer screen is vulnerable to theft. This is unavoidable and a problem across the industry. Giants like Netflix, Youtube, Amazon, etc. all have the same issue, and as an industry, we continue to work on new technology solutions to limit Piracy.

Because pirating techniques currently outpace protection, we hired a company who is specifically dedicated to enforcing the DMCA laws on your behalf and target violating individuals, hosting sites, and DNS servers in an attempt to get any unauthorized content removed. This company, Link-Busters, employs a team of professionals trained in DMCA law to go after piracy issues you bring to us. For more info on Link-Busters, feel free to take a look at their site: https://link-busters.com/

Unfortunately, because of the nature of piracy, many of these sites operate outside the law and are very difficult to get shut down, despite the best efforts of our team. Not every country has copyright laws and some pirate sites ignore lawful notices they are sent. However, when we do send Link-Busters after pirated Udemy courses, we are successful many times.

  • Rating your experience in a course is an easy way to give instructors feedback on how to improve and to help potential students select the right course. You can leave a review at anytime after starting the course. After leaving a review, you will always have the ability to edit or delete it.

Instructors can publicly respond to your review in case they want to thank you for your opinion, clarify any questions or concerns you raised, or let you know that they’ve made changes to improve the course based on your input. If you update your review following an instructor's response, only your updated review will be visible to other students (the instructor response will removed).

You can also leave feedback on the course by answering the optional questions you’ll be asked when you submit a review or rating.

    How to Leave a Review

There are three places you can go to leave a review:

From the course cards on your My Courses page.

In the course player by clicking on Leave a rating.

With the in-course prompt: while viewing the course you will be prompted to leave a review three times (beginning, middle, and end).

All of these reviews will be visible to the instructor and other students, but if you update your review, only your latest changes will be visible. If you do not wish to leave a review when you’re prompted, you can click on “Ask Me Later”.

Don’t worry, if you change your mind as you continue through the course, you will be prompted again to update your review.

rules and guidelines What to Include in Your Review

Whether you decide to leave a review after you’ve been prompted, or you initiate the review yourself, the process is the same.

Tips for Writing a Good Review

Here are a few things you should keep in mind when writing a review for a course:

Tell us why. In addition to leaving a star rating, please share your thoughts. Your opinion about the course is valuable to other students, but when just a star rating is left, it’s difficult for other students to understand why you left that rating you did.

Be specific. Specificity helps other students determine if the course is the right for them. Are there any areas of improvement? Did the course meet your expectations? What are your favorite parts of the course so far?

And Be Honest!Reviews are one of the most important features that students consider before enrolling in a course. However, reviews are only valuable if you’re honest about how you feel about the course. As long as you share your sentiment in a respectful manner, your feedback is valuable and helpful to the marketplace.

    Review Guidelines

Not all reviews are considered appropriate. Please read through our for more information.

  • Have questions regarding how Udemy courses are priced? Here are some of our most frequently asked questions.

How does pricing work on Udemy ?

The instructor of the course determines the list price of the course. In addition, both Instructors and Udemy can offer discounts on courses at anytime. Once you have purchased a course, you are able to learn at your own pace, and you have lifetime access to the course material as long as you continue to have access to your Udemy account.

Does Udemy offer promotions on courses?

Yes! We frequently run promotions that offer courses at great, low prices! If you want to be alerted of our promotions, please make sure you’re subscribed to our promotional emails. You can review your notification settings by here.

Why is the price listed for a course at Udemy.com different than the price for it on the mobile app?

The marketplace for Udemy’s mobile applications are owned and managed by Apple (iOS app) and Google Play (Android app), and Udemy does not have control over the price tier structure provided by these platforms. As a result, the course price listed on the mobile apps may differ slightly from the course price posted on Udemy.com. This is because the pricing matrix for these mobile providers will select the price tier that is closest to the course price set by the Udemy instructor, but they do not always match up exactly.

Additionally, courses on the mobile app may have a different price listed during a sale, because there is no way to enter coupon codes on the Udemy mobile apps, like there is on the web version of Udemy.com. If you encounter a price discrepancy on the mobile app, and have a coupon code to discount a course, please enter the code on our web version at www.udemy.com. Once you have purchased the course at Udemy.com you will also be able to access it on the mobile app.

How are you calculating exchange rates?

We are using a country-specific price tier matrix to determine a student’s localized price. You can see the price tier matrix here. The matrix will be updated periodically based on market conditions.

A course I was enrolled in has been unpublished; do I still have access to the content?

Yes, you’ll continue to have lifetime access to all the courses you are enrolled in so long as you have access to your Udemy account. Please be sure to log in to your Udemy account to access your courses.

I bought a course and it’s now being offered at a lower price, what should I do?

We will honor the best price available for any courses purchased up to 30 days after the initial purchase date. Please contact our support team with the exact title of the course in question so we can process the price adjustment.

Do I have to pay taxes when I purchase a course?

Students who reside in nations that charge VAT (Value Added Tax) or GST (Goods & Services Tax) may be required to pay this tax when they purchase a Udemy course. This article includes answers to frequently asked questions we receive regarding taxes for Udemy course purchases.

    Still have questions?

If you’ve created draft courses on Udemy, you must delete each of the courses you created before closing your account ( more info here ).

After removing yourself as a co-instructor from all courses, navigate to the Close Account section to permanently close your Udemy account.

  • If you've bought a course and it’s not showing up in the My Courses section of your Udemy account, this article provides helpful, troubleshooting steps on how you might find it.

Did You Receive an Enrollment Confirmation Email?

Udemy sends out a confirmation email whenever you enroll in a course. So, as an initial step, please ensure that you are logged into the same email account that is registered to your Udemy account, and that you received an enrollment confirmation email for the course. Be sure to check your Junk mail folder if you don’t see the enrollment confirmation email in your inbox.

If you don’t see a confirmation email, this could indicate that you purchased the course while logged into Udemy with a different email address (see below), or that the purchase was not completed. We also advise checking your banking information or your PayPal account to verify the purchase was processed.

Could You Have Multiple Email Accounts Registered With Udemy?

Occasionally students create more than one Udemy account by mistake. For example, a student might mistakenly create a second Udemy account on their mobile device, or, by creating an account with a social media login that they do not regularly use. If you use multiple email accounts, or have a Facebook or Google account, try logging in with the associated email addresses.

If you discover that you have created more than one Udemy account by accident, and would like to merge the accounts, please click here for steps on how to do so.

Was Your Email Address Entered Correctly When You Signed Up?

If you're still having trouble, you may have entered your email address incorrectly when your first signed up for Udemy. For example, instead of entering “[email protected]”, you might have typed “Jne” by mistake. As a result, our system would attempt sending your confirmation email to that address, instead of the correct one.

Double check to see that you received a confirmation email for your course purchase. If you did not receive an email with a receipt, please contact our support team and include your first and last name, and the title of the course that you're missing.

If you paid with a debit or credit card, please provide the last four digits on the card as well as the cardholder's name as it appears on the card. If you completed your purchase with PayPal, please provide the PayPal receipt including the transaction id.

Did You Purchase The Missing Course Using Udemy’s Mobile App?

If you've tried purchasing a course on the Udemy mobile app, but are unable to locate it in your account, then please click here to read our Missing Mobile Purchases article.

    Is the Course Archived?

If the course was moved to the Archived section of your account, then you won’t see it on your My Courses page. To check and see if the course was Archived by mistake, please follow these steps:

    Navigate to My Courses

    Click on the Archived option

If you see the course card there, click on the vertical ellipses at the top right

    Select Unarchive

    Still Stuck?

If you’re still unable to find your missing course, please contact our with the following details:

  • This Promotions Policy was last updated on October 9, 2019.

This Promotions Policy (“Policy”) includes information about methods that Udemy instructors can use to promote their courses, including instructor coupons, course referral links and Udemy’s optional marketing programs. This Policy is incorporated by reference into our Terms of Use and Instructor Terms. Any capitalized terms that aren’t defined in this Policy are defined as specified in the Terms of Use or Instructor Terms.

You can find translated versions of this Policy by following the Help Center language instructions available here. The following translations are also available for languages not supported by the Help Center:

    Korean ( )

    Chinese - Traditional ( )

    Chinese - Simplified ( )

    Dutch ( Promotiebeleid )

    Russian ( )

Romanian ( Politica de promoii )

    Indonesian ( Kebijakan Promosi )

    Thai ( )

Any version of these Terms in a language other than English is provided for convenience and you understand and agree that the English language will control if there is any conflict.

    1. Instructor Coupons& Course Referral Links

As an instructor, you may be able to increase your sales by promoting your course through a course referral link or coupon code. You may generate a coupon code for a discount or at Udemy’s current price, as permitted within the Services. Note that the actual discount may be slightly higher due to rounding and currency conversion. When a student applies your discount coupon to a foreign currency transaction, we will apply a proportional discount in the student’s applicable currency.

Where a student applies your coupon code or course referral link at checkout, your revenue share will be 97\% of the Net Amount less any applicable deductions, such as student refunds.

Alternatively, you may be able to generate 100\%-off coupons to offer your paid course for free. You may not sell free coupons on third-party websites or otherwise offer them in exchange for compensation.

    2. Promotional Programs

2.1 How the Promotional Programs Work

Udemy offers premium instructors several optional marketing programs (“Promotional Programs”), which you can opt into through the Promotional Agreements page of your instructor settings. The specific programs offered may change from time to time. In connection with the Promotional Programs, your courses may also be priced higher at Udemy’s discretion.

Not all deals or programs will be available in all geographic territories or for all Udemy courses. Udemy has sole discretion to determine which courses to offer as part of the Promotional Programs and to set or update sale prices.

The discount amounts referenced below are approximate, as the actual discount may be slightly higher due to rounding and currency conversion. Udemy does not guarantee any minimum level of success in connection with the Promotional Programs.

    2.2 Udemy Deals Program

The Udemy Deals Program helps increase your revenue potential by enabling Udemy to offer your course at a compelling discount as part of targeted promotions. You may choose to participate in either or both variants of the Deals Program:

“Percentage Promotions” allows Udemy to offer your course for a discount of up to 75\% off the Base Price.

“Fixed-Price Promotions” allows Udemy to offer your course for a price no lower than $10 USD (or local equivalent), except in Australia, Brazil, India, Mexico, South Africa, and Turkey, where the price may be lower. Fixed-Price Promotions may represent a discount of over 75\% depending on the Base Price.

Deals Program deals may be promoted through the Services, communications to users, or third-party platforms, and the duration of the deals may vary.

By participating in the Deals Program, you agree that your revenue share will be 50\% of the Net Amount of the sale less any applicable deductions, such as student refunds.

    2.3 Marketing Boost Program

Udemy has a network of tens of thousands of affiliate sites and established relationships with third-party deal sites. We also have a team dedicated to placing paid digital advertisements. Through the Marketing Boost Program, Udemy leverages these partner sites and advertising platforms to promote your courses to new students at no up-front cost to you.

By participating in the Marketing Boost Program, you authorize Udemy to employ affiliate sites, third-party deal sites, and paid advertising on third-party platforms (together, “Advertising”) to promote your course. In calculating your revenue, Udemy may deduct fees associated with this Advertising from the Gross Amount before calculating the Net Amount of the sale.

By participating in the Marketing Boost Program, you agree that your revenue share will be 25\% of the Net Amount of the sale less any applicable deductions, such as student refunds.

    2.4 Udemy for Business Program

The Udemy for Business (UFB) collection (“Collection”) is a subscription-based course collection available to business customers (“UFB Customers”), featuring a select group of Udemy’s top courses for professional and personal development skills.

By opting into the Udemy for Business Program, you agree to make all of your courses eligible for inclusion in the Collection. We may elect whether to select your courses for inclusion in the Collection, and may change the selection from time to time at our sole discretion. Because the Collection is subscription-based, we may also select sale prices at our discretion. While your course is included in the Collection, you may not unpublish that course or make it private.

    Revenue Share

By participating in the Udemy for Business Program, you agree that your revenue share will be calculated as follows:

Each month, Udemy will calculate the total monthly subscription fees paid by all current UFB Customers minus any applicable Transaction Taxes, foreign exchange fees, and third-party payment processing fees.

Twenty-five percent (25\%) of this amount will be allocated to instructors participating in the Udemy for Business Program ("Instructor Revenue Pool") as further described below.

Each month, Udemy will calculate the total minutes of course content in the Collection consumed by all current UFB Customers ("Total Minutes Consumed").

Each month, Udemy will also calculate how many of the Total Minutes Consumed are attributable to each of your Courses that were included in the Collection that month ("Your Course Minutes").

To calculate your revenue share each month, Udemy will divide the Instructor Revenue Pool by the Total Minutes Consumed, then multiply that per-minute amount by Your Course Minutes.

    Exclusivity

Once your course is included in the Collection, you agree that you will not begin to offer any pre-recorded courses that directly compete with or injure the sales of that course on any site or platform other than your own. For clarity, this doesn’t include literary works or in-person instructional trainings. If you choose to terminate your participation in the Udemy for Business Program, you agree that this exclusivity provision will remain in place until we remove your course from the Collection.

    Termination

You can choose to terminate your participation in the Udemy for Business Program at any time. Udemy will remove your courses from the Collection within 12 months of termination and will continue to pay you revenue share based on the then-current rates until your courses are removed from the Collection. Once your courses are removed from the Collection, UFB Customers will no longer be able to enroll in your courses and you will no longer earn Udemy for Business Program revenue share, but any student of a UFB Customer who previously enrolled in your courses will continue to be able to access those courses for as long as the UFB Customer remains subscribed to Udemy for Business.

    2.5 Opting Out

Except as otherwise stated above, you can opt out of the Promotional Programs at any time. However, your course will remain subject to any applicable sales, campaigns, or promotions that are already active at the time you opt out, until those sales, campaigns, or promotions are completed.

    3. Modifications

We may update this Policy from time to time to clarify our practices or to reflect new or different practices. If we make any material change, we will notify you using prominent means such as by email notice sent to the email address specified in your account or by posting a notice through our Services. Modifications will become effective on the day they are posted unless stated otherwise.

    4. How to Contact Us

  • This article explains how to fix some of the more common issues related to downloading courses and lectures on the Udemy mobile app. Steps on how to download course and lectures on the mobile app can be read in the articles below:

    iOS

    Android

Before doing any of the steps below, please be sure you’re using the latest version of the Udemy mobile app.

The video download is taking too long

Test your internet connection speed to see if this could be why the videos are taking too long to download. If the internet speed is low (less than 5 Mbps) then please try the following:

Lower the video download quality of the lecture so the file size for the download is smaller.

    iOS instructions

    Android instructions

If the course includes multiple, long lectures, try downloading individual lectures or sections instead of the entire course at once.

Keep the app open and in the foreground so the downloading finishes more quickly.

Try downloading the courses at a time when your internet connection is stronger.

Restart your modem/router to see if your internet connection improves.

If you’re still encountering issues downloading the video, and your internet connection is strong, then please try these steps:

Cancel all downloads in progress and then restart the app to download the content again.

Check to see if you have enabled download over WiFi only (see below).

Delete the Udemy app from the home screen and then reinstall it on your device. Please note that any offline content you’ve saved from your courses will be removed completely after the app reinstallation. You will need to re-download the content once again

    The lecture cannot be downloaded

In some cases, you will not see a download icon for certain lectures on the course curriculum, as not all lectures can be downloaded. For instance, quizzes cannot be downloaded for offline viewing.

    Accessing non-video downloads

If you downloaded a non-video file lecture (a PDF lecture, for example), the file is downloaded to your device's storage. Instead of accessing it from the Udemy app, please open your device's Downloads folder.

Locating downloaded files in your device’s internal storage

Due to piracy concerns the downloaded files are encrypted, and as a result, you can only access the video lecture within the app itself and not in your device’s internal storage.

Downloading over wifi only is enabled

If you're using your mobile data network rather than Wi-Fi to download the course, please make sure that the download via Wi-Fi only setting is unchecked. You can do this by going into the Download options page on the Android app, or the Download options page on the iOS device.

If you're using the Android app, you can navigate to the Account page by tapping the menu icon that appears at the upper-left corner of the Featured or My Courses screen. Then, choose Download options under the Video preferences section and toggle the Download over Wi-Fi only off.

If you're using the iOS app, you can navigate to Download options by clicking the Account icon at the bottom right of the My Courses, Wishlist, Featured or Search screen.

  • If you’re encountering audio or video issues while attempting to watch your course with the Udemy mobile app, this article explains various ways to solve these problems. Our support team will also follow this guide when responding to inquiries regarding this.

Determine if your environment’s causing the issue

Try watching another lecture or course to determine whether your mobile device, settings or internet connection may be causing the problem. If you’re able to watch other lectures without any problems, this indicates there is a technical issue with the original video and not your environment. You can report the issue by clicking here.

If you’re encountering playback issues with other lectures, however, then please try the troubleshooting steps outlined below.

Troubleshooting video loading issues (ie: the video keeps loading/buffering, you see a blank screen)

If you still encounter issues while watching other course videos, then this indicates there’s an issue with your device, settings or internet connection.

Ensure that the device/network connection meets our system requirements and make sure that you update to the latest Udemy app version.

You may be viewing the course with a slow internet connection or a weak cellular signal. Please try the following:

Reduce the video streaming quality to play the video in a lower resolution

Restart your device and your modem/router if you’re on a WiFi network to see if your internet connection improves

Turn mobile data off, wait ten seconds, and then turn it back on

Download the course for offline viewing instead of streaming it online

If you still continue to experience playback issues after trying the steps above, please do the following:

    Restart the Udemy app

Delete the Udemy app from your device and reinstall it. Please be aware that any content you have saved for offline viewing will be removed completely after the app re-installation. You will need to re-download the content once again.

Troubleshooting playback issues with downloaded lectures

If you’re encountering playback issues with lectures you’ve downloaded for offline viewing, please try the following:

Try downloading another lecture and watching it offline. If you’re able to watch other lectures offline without any problems, this indicates there is likely a technical issue with the original video and not your device. You can report the issue by clicking here.

Check to see that the course or lecture was downloaded successfully. Steps on how to download course and lectures on the mobile app can be read in the articles below:

    iOS

    Android

Remove the offline content and download the lecture(s) again. While we understand this can be an inconvenience, it may resolve the issue if files in the memory storage are broken or missing.

If you still continue to experience issues with the downloaded videos, please do the following:

Turn on airplane mode for your device and try watching the downloaded lectures. To do so, please close all apps running > check the device's settings > search AirPlane/Flight mode > turn it on.

Turn off your internet connection (as well as your mobile data signal) and then try playing the content you’ve downloaded.

    Try restarting the Udemy app.

  • Udemy assignments are a great way to apply your knowledge and improve the skills you’ve learned, without exiting the course! If you wish, you can also learn from fellow students by receiving feedback on your assignments, or by sharing your thoughts on theirs.

    Completing an Assignment

Assignments are posted in the curriculum of the course. Just like lectures, you can begin an assignment by clicking on it in the curriculum accessible from the left hand side in the video player, or on the course dashboard in the Course Content section.

Please note: currently assignments are not supported on the mobile app. To take and complete an assignment, open the lecture in a desktop or laptop computer.

Once you have clicked on the assignment you will see the assignment title, and the amount of time the instructor thinks it will take for you to complete it. This will give you a quick indication of whether you have enough time to complete the assignment now, or return to it later. In addition, the assignment feature comes with a “save draft” option, so if you run out of time, you can save what you’ve entered and finish the assignment later. You can begin the assignment by clicking on Start Assignment in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

Once you have begun the assignment, you can proceed through each section by clicking on Next at the bottom right of the page, or on the section title at the top.

Each assignment includes the following sections:

    Instructions

In the instructions section the instructor will outline what the assignment entails and what you will need to do to complete it. If the instructor has included any additional resources for you to refer to, they will also be included on this page.

Once you’re ready to complete your assignment, click on Submission at the top of the page, or Next at the bottom right.

    Submission

The submission section is where you can enter your answers or add the content (image, code or external link) that the assignment requires. If at any point you want to save your assignment, and return to it at a later time, click on Save Draft at the bottom left hand of the page. What you have completed thus far will be saved.

Please note that the submission for each question must be 65K characters or less. Images that are to be uploaded to a submission most be smaller than 30 MB in size, and can be in .JPG, .PNG or .BMP file format.

Once your assignment is finished, you can select whether you want to share it with your fellow students. If you click on the share with my fellow students box, then students will be able to post feedback on your assignment.

If you have saved your submission as a draft and haven’t submitted it yet, you can return to it at anytime by clicking on Submission at the top.

If your assignment is finished and you’re ready to submit it to the instructor then click on Submit at the bottom left of the page. Please note: once your assignment has been submitted it cannot be edited.

To advance from the submission page to the instructor’s example, click on Instructor Example at the top of the page. If you need to review the instructions again, however, then simply click on Instructions at the top left.

    Instructor Example

On the Instructor Example page you can review the answers or solution the instructor has posted, and compare it to your own.

If you haven’t submitted your assignment, you can return to it by clicking on Submission at the top, or Add your Answer at the bottom of the page.

    Give Feedback

Reviewing another student’s work and providing your feedback will likely improve your own understanding of the course. On this page you can provide feedback on the assignments of up to three other students, who have chosen to share their work.

Completing Your Assignment And Viewing Feedback

Once you have submitted your assignment, and you have navigated through each section to the Give Feedback page, the assignment will be marked as complete with a gray checkmark.

Please note that assignments cannot be unmarked as complete.

After the course instructor or other students post feedback on your assignment (if you have opted to share it with them), you will receive a notification from Udemy. The notification will include a link to the summary page that features the feedback.

Once feedback has been posted on your assignment, you can also review it at anytime, by returning to the assignment and clicking on Go to Summary at the bottom.
