Q&A With Venable LLP Employees

Asked to all employees at Venable LLP

  • The attorneys have clearly defined path to partnership goals that they review pretty regularly. Promotions among support staff have been rare historically, but that's been improving in recent years. In most departments, you work with your supervisor and/or department director to set up goals and a timeline for earning a promotion. Some groups are better about this than others, but there's no punishment for asking. And we get annual reviews so you'll know if your job performance rates high enough to make asking worthwhile.

  • Slowly and infrequently.

Generally good. Full time employees start with 3 weeks of PTO. That bumps up a week after 5 and 10 years. As long as there's coverage within your department, your time off will probably be approved.

  • Full time employees start with 3 weeks of paid time off and 5 days of sick time. After 5 years, you get another week of PTO. And after 10 years you get one more week. Depending on experience, you can negotiate for more PTO when you start, but you'll never get more than 5 weeks. They're usually really good approving time off, too. As long as there's coverage for your work and you give enough notice, you'll get approved.

  • Not typically, although some departments are more flexible about schedules and working from home than others. Depending on the type of work you're applying to do, you might be able to negotiate working remotely in the hiring process, but I can't think of any jobs here that aren't primarily in one of our offices.

  • Yes, but only two and they're both special circumstances. A lot of us are able to work remotely when we need to, but we mostly work in the office.

Most are nice people. It's generally a friendly work environment. Of course, any office with this many people is going to have some jerks, but there aren't many. The vast majority of the lawyers and support staff are highly competent and very good at their jobs.
