
Managers advocate for promotions for their reports to their directors, who then make decisions on who of those people should be advocated up to Sr Director, etc. The number of open promotion slots shrinks dramatically as you get in to the higher levels, requiring more and more visibility in the org, cross functional visibility, etc. in order to have a chance of promotion.
Doesn’t appear that qualifications mean anything. I’ve seen people with no technical expertise get promoted to a technical position like genius without going through the steps prior to that like tech expert or specialist. They promote based on who’s liked by the manager and who isn’t.
Hard working dedicated people who use principaled decision making to stay ontime will be promoted
All political. Depends who you know and who’s head you stepped to get there.
Hard working. Obedient. Productive. Popular. Go along to get along.
Popularity. Ability to execute orders without thinking.
