The modern CMO at a small company or startup is in a unique position of influence. In many cases, they are overseeing a small team of marketers for a company that is just beginning to make a name for itself in the minds of customers. But crafting a brand-new identity for a company is its own beast, and just as challenging as trying to redraft the identity of a larger company that already has a reputation in place. The CMO of a startup has to be just as tuned in to the sometimes imperceptible cultural changes that need to be reflected in all areas of marketing, and – unlike a more established company – they often don’t get a “do over” if they get it wrong.
In that spirit, here are 49 notable Marketing Leaders of small companies (less than 500 employees) from across the U.S. that recognize the real capabilities and passions of the current consumer and are keeping a close eye on cultural changes and shifts. Their teams also gave them high marks on Comparably. Their goals: building trust and using their voices inside their companies, in the industry, and in society at large to debut their company in the public consciousness with a strong identity in place. As the cultural conversation in our country shifts on a nearly daily basis in 2020, these are the marketing leaders who track those changes and take action.
