Executive Bio

Ms. Gloria M. McCarthy has been Chief Administration Officer and Executive Vice President of Anthem, Inc.(formerly WellPoint Inc. ) since May 2013 and serves as its Chief of Staff since August 2016. Ms. McCarthy is responsible for Information Technology (IT), HealthCare and the commercialization of WellPoint's IBM-Watson partnership, as well as driving cross-organizational execution, ensuring WellPoint's strategic objectives are achieved through strong execution across all operational and organizational lines. She manages major enterprise-wide change initiatives and investment decisions, heads the company's real estate and procurement functions and leads WellPoint's continuous improvement, business planning and operational review activities. Ms. McCarthy has more than 35 years of executive experience driving large-scale enterprise-wide execution, six of those years with WellPoint. She served as an Executive Vice President of Enterprise Execution & Efficiency at WellPoint Inc. since October 2012 until May 2013. Prior positions include Executive Vice President, Office of the Chief Executive Officer since February 2012 until October 2012 and Senior Vice President of Operational Excellence at WellPoint Inc., where she led WellPoint's evolution to a high-performing, more affordable operating model. She was responsible for WellPoint's driving enterprise project management, including the Enterprise Portfolio Management Office; leading the Investment Priority Council to drive key business priorities; working with the Operations Council to ensure a coordinated and disciplined approach to the planning and execution of all projects and investments across the enterprise; leading it through Health Care Reform and preparing it to comply with federal and state mandates including ICD-10; overseeing system migrations and WellPoint's corporate real estate functions. Prior to that, she served as senior vice president of Service Operations, overseeing all operations at WellPoint Inc. and moving the team from a regional to enterprise model. She was responsible for customer service, claims, membership and billing, dental operations, senior market operations, operations learning and development and print/mail operations. In January 2006, following the WellPoint/WellChoice merger, Ms. McCarthy served as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for WellPoint's East Region. In this role, she was responsible for overseeing Actuarial, Health Care Management and Service Operations functions for WellPoint's East Region states: Connecticut, Georgia, Maine, New Hampshire, New York and Virginia. Prior to the WellPoint/WellChoice merger, Ms. McCarthy served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of WellChoice Inc. since April 24, 2003 and was responsible for Operations, Medical Management, Sales, Marketing and Information Technology. Ms. McCarthy served as Senior Vice President of Operations, Managed Care and Medicare Services of WellChoice, Inc. from September 2002 to April 2003 and HealthChoice a subsidiary of WellChoice, Inc. from March 1997 to April 2003. Ms. McCarthy has held a variety of other positions at HealthChoice since joining in 1974. Ms. McCarthy served as an Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President of Empire HealthChoice HMO, Inc. (formerly, Empire Healthchoice Inc). She worked over 15 years working closely with CMS as the head of the Medicare Strategic Business Unit for Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Herbert H. Lehman College in New York and her Master of Business Administration from Iona College in New York.
