IDX: 25 TOT: 51
How's the work pace at Bigcommerce?
The work is fairly fast paced. The teams work on 2 week sprints and deploy features sometimes daily out to production. Product is always changing priority and due dates get pulled in often which can sometimes add to stress.
How challenged are you at Bigcommerce?
It depends on which team you’re on and if you’re one of the “alpha engineers,” they get the more fun projects. Some teams have more interesting work than others. Depends too on your product manager.
How much and how often do raises happen at Bigcommerce?
Reviews are twice a year, and promotions yearly. Raises happen yearly.
What's one thing you wish you'd known before joining Bigcommerce?
That the IT department is so draconian and old-fashioned in terms of equipment. We use laptops from 2014, and it’s going into 2018. They don’t let you use/choose your own equipment either so you’re stuck with crappy machines.
How much diversity is there among employees at Bigcommerce?
The diversity is actually really good. It’s a mix of white men, minorities, and women. Most of the engieers are under the age of 35, but there are some who are old - but not many.
What's the office layout like at Bigcommerce?
Open desks, with closed (tinted glass) conference rooms. Large open break room/kitchen area.
What unique perks and benefits does Bigcommerce provide?
You get your own free online store! Unlimited vacation (although it’s really 3-4 weeks max). Free snacks, health insurance, etc. The usual things you’d expect these days from a tech company. Nothing stands out as unique.

Mid level engineers can make 80-95K, and seniors can make 100-150K. Managers can make around 150K or more.
What's the Engineering team like at Bigcommerce?
Overall the engineering team is made up of a good mix of people all of them are passionate about what they do. A lot of people become unhappy once they realize the promises given during the hiring process about the company end up flat. Turn-over in recent months seems high as people are becoming unhappy.
How's the leadership on the Engineering team at Bigcommerce?
Leadership seems to be run more or less like a “big boy’s only” club with certain favorites being played across the organization. There is stubborn adherence to doing things in-house with some “not invented here” mentality. Very little if any open source culture or interest in contributing to the community at large. Most of the management is concerned with estimates, that they openly refute and or talk about making changes but not much in way of actionable delivery. Leaders will visit remote offices and totally ignore most employees, only hanging out with the “alpha engineers.”
What's the vibe like in the Engineering dept at Bigcommerce? How many hours are you working?
It is a meritocratic culture with certain “alpha engineers” favored over others, which can breed contempt. There isn’t any real investment in training or formal career advancement. Promotions happen based mostly on manager’s discretion and less on data. The hours you work varies from a normal 40 hrs week to 60 hrs or more, depending on which team you work on.
What's the company culture like at Bigcommerce?
Most excellent. Friendly people who are a team on a mission. We track company "mojo" and strive to be one of the best places to work, and usually are recognized for that in all our offices.
