How employees describe working at Bigcommerce
for the money we're paying, i hope so! Otherwise no better than Volusion
I interned at BC last summer. The culture of the company is awesome, they give you every tool you need to succeed, and allow you to network internally with senior level members. If you somehow get an offer, take it.
Opportunity to meet 4 people across the org
Approachable and friendly. No micromanagement of employees.
Working remotely is a great benefit.

How's the vacation policy at Bigcommerce?
NO ONE there takes more than 4 weeks and very very few people do that. Unlimited vacation just means they don't have to pay your for it when you leave - this place churns through employees
It’s supposed to be unlimited, but in reality they allow for 3-5 weeks tops (the higher end for more tenured people). At least one of the blocks needs to be a consecutive week of time off. (You cannot take off a bunch of Thr or Fri’s off for the whole year.)
Generally, take the time you need with approval of your manager.
How's the work life balance at Bigcommerce?
Not great - depending on your department.
Fine
Not good.
What are you most excited about working at Bigcommerce?
Finding another job
Great coworkers and the impact we make on small business
Enabling our customers to grow.
What benefits does Bigcommerce provide?
Top Employee Response
BigCommerce provides medical, dental, vision insurance, a 401k plan (but no company matching yet), an education allowance, a BigCommerce store for each employee for their personal use, daily tasty lunches (SF office), PTO (take the time you need), awesome offices, very fun twice yearly Hackathons (all depts, not just engineering), and stock options that will most likely be worth something.
Health, Dental, Vision, 401k (not matching)
Good question. Not many
How's the morale at Bigcommerce?
Low
The morale is mixed. Some people, especially those new to the company, feel it’s amazing. Those who have been there longer feel it’s a bit over sold and hyped. The entering team feels bullied by product and sales and it operates more like a feature factory style company.
What kind of people succeed at Bigcommerce?
You have to be ambitious and willing to be political. Deflect blame on other people and take credit for anything good (even if you were only remotely associated to it) seems to be who gets rewarded the most and promoted. Also you have to obviously be a contributor too — and make sure everyone knows the good things you done, but none of the bad.
The most successful people at BigCommerce will be ones who don't get paralyzed by analysis, take action, give and take feedback and work hard for our customers. It's a very supportive organization, but you have to give support to the rest of the team, not just receive that support. Our company values are things like Team on a Mission, Make a Difference Every Day, Customers First, Act with Integrity. If you are able to internalize those, you will be successful at BC.
What do you like best about the leadership team at Bigcommerce?
Solid vision, sticks to strategy over reacting
Recent upgrades. Need more.
What is the daily attire at Bigcommerce?
Very casual.
What's the work from home policy like at Bigcommerce?
You are allowed to work one day a week from home if your manager okays it.
How long do the interviews usually take at Bigcommerce?
Depends a lot on the team and position. I would estimate 1:30hr - 2:00hr for most positions but some can come with additional testing that I've seen take 2 hours on its own. You will meet with multiple people or pairs of interviewers during that time.
What's the vibe like in the Admin dept at Bigcommerce? How many hours are you working?
Different per location, but regular business hours. Rarely ever after hours or weekend unless special circumstances. Can wfh as needed too.
What's the Admin team like at Bigcommerce?
Friendly, fun, a real team that works together daily and doesn't just focus on their own needs, but rather how they can support the team as well.
How's the leadership on the Admin team at Bigcommerce?
There is no hierarchy on the Admin team. Ideas are shared, and decisions that affect everyone are a collaboration with senior HR leadership
What do people at Bigcommerce think about the CEO? What do they do well and what can they improve?
They like the CEO, but he comes from a sales background and not technology and it sorta shows.
What's the interview process like at Bigcommerce?
You usually do a phone screen with a recruiter. Then you get to talk to a hiring manager by phone or Google Hangouts. Then you get to come in for an in-person interview on site with a mix of people both one on one and panel interviews.
What part of Bigcommerce's business is growing fastest? What part is having difficulties?
3rd party integrations is the fast growing area. The company as a whole seems to be struggling with keeping up with Shopify and Weebly in terms of features. Doesn’t feel like BigCommerce is industry leading, more industry following.
If you could make changes, how would you improve the culture at Bigcommerce?
Invest in the engineers to the same degree they do their sales and customer service organizations. Give teams more autonomy and freedom to innovate and not be stuck with what DevOps approves or blesses. Also make Product teams accountable for features they ask engineers to build.
How does Bigcommerce make decisions around promotions?
Managers meet and suggest who should get promotions. It’s based mostly on their discretion and doesn’t really involve any hard data points. If managers agree then the person is promoted.
How's the feedback proccess at Bigcommerce?
It is supposed to be open, but the HR department has an agenda. They always want to paint the best picture so to win awards and accolades from newspapers about being “the best place to work.” There are some serious issues with morale at the company but they don’t seem to understand the root causes.
How do you feel about going to work at Bigcommerce everyday?
I feel some days it’s better or easier to just work remote from home. I don’t see the need to go into the office every single day.
How difficult is it to maintain a social life while in your job at Bigcommerce?
Not at all. It’s in the heart of downtown so you can easily meet friends after work.
How can I improve my chances of being hired at Bigcommerce?
Know someone who works there or be super amazing at what you do. We have a high-bar it seems when hiring — little interest in junior level people.
What are the team outings like at Bigcommerce?
Usually they’re things like boat trips on the lake, go cart races or going to a restaurant or something.
How secure do you feel at your job at Bigcommerce?
I feel secure in my job.
What's the best part of your job at Bigcommerce?
Their downtown location is awesome. There are some smart people throughout the organization, but they’re no usually in position to influence things in a good way.
