Frequently Asked Questions About CBC

  • CBC Gem is available for free as an App for iOS, tvOS, and Android phones and tablets.

Plus, we are happy to announce the release of native CBC Gem apps for Android TV and Fire TV.

Gem is also accessible on PC or Mac via web browser at gem.cbc.ca

If you wish to stream our content to your television, this can be achieved via Apple AirPlay or Google Chromecast.

    Android

The CBC Gem app for Android is intended for touchscreen Android phones and tablets running Android 4.4.4 and above.

The app will not work properly if loaded onto an unsupported device (Android box, Smart TV, Chromebook, Android TV, Fire TV)

You can also access CBC Gem from the your Android device's web browser (preferably Chrome or Firefox) by visiting gem.cbc.ca, but we highly recommend installing the CBC Gem app from the Google Play Store as it will provide you with a smoother, more stable viewing experience.

    Android TV

Our newly released CBC Gem app for Android TV is intended for devices running version 6 or higher of the Android TV operating system. These devices include the NVIDIA Shield, Sony Bravia, and Sharp AQUOS smart tvs.

    Fire TV

Our newly released CBC Gem app for Fire TV is intended for use on the Amazon Fire TV stick, or on Fire TV-enabled Toshiba Smart TVs.

You can also access CBC Gem from the Fire TV's Silk web browser, or Firefox by visiting gem.cbc.ca, but we highly recommend installing the CBC Gem app as it will provide you with a smoother, more stable viewing experience.

    iOS

The CBC Gem app for iOS is intended for iPhone, iPad or iPod touch running iOS 10 or above.

You can still access CBC Gem from the Safari web browser by visiting gem.cbc.ca, but we highly recommend installing the CBC Gem app from the Apple App Store as it will provide you with a smoother, more stable viewing experience.

The CBC Gem app is not available on older generation Apple TVs (silver remote) which do not have access to the Apple TV App Store. However, you can still AirPlay our content from an iPhone, iPad or the Safari Browser on a Mac with some limitations.

You can find more information on AirPlay here.

  • Data has long helped us make informed decisions about creating better products. We are always looking for your feedback, asking what resonates with you so we can do our jobs better.

In some cases, like if you register for one of our newsletters, you share your information with us. But the vast majority of the data we collect bears no indicator of who you are, personally.

In part, we collect the data to improve your experience on the site. For example, we want to be able to show you local headlines and weather reports tailored to where you live when you visit our website. To do that, we need to remember pieces of information about you which we collect via cookies, small text files that act as your browser’s memory.

Cookies can tell us the following:

What CBC digital products you use (websites or apps) and how often.

How often you’ve seen certain ads.

What written, video and audio content you read, listen to and watch.

How you navigate our sites (what you click, what you share).

    Your location.

What kind of device you use, what browser you use and your IP address.

The CBC will also use cookie data to allow us to match ads with our readers’ interests. Again, this data will not identify you individually but rather as part of a larger group. You can find more detailed information about cookies on CBC.ca in this FAQ.

    Managing your data

Of course, you also have options in what you share. You can disable cookies in your browser of choice or download a cookie blocker.

If you do so, some sections of the site may not be visible or function. For example, installing a cookie blocker might also result in features including audio and video, your location, search features, registration, sign-in and commenting being blocked.

If you do decide to use a cookie blocker, please consider whitelisting or allowing exceptions for chartbeat, adobe, viafoura, and scorecardresearch so that we continue to receive useful aggregated information about how our audience is using our sites.

You can find more detailed information about cookies, tracking in our privacy policy and our terms of use.

  • How do I access CBC News Network on Gem?

For $4.99 a month (with the first month free of charge for new subscribers), Canadians can upgrade their free CBC Gem accounts to Premiumin order to enjoy these additional features:

Watch current and past seasons of favourite shows on demand (ad free on-demand shows)

Live stream CBC News Network 24/7

Please note that all live streams on Gem will still contain ads as they are essentially mirrors of what is being broadcast on television.

I already have access to CBC News Network through my television service provider. Can I access News Network on Gem using this account?

No. The CBCGem streaming service is not affiliated with any cable or satellite content providers.

The fees you are paying for your cable subscription do not go towards the Gem service.

We are running our service independently so we can offer Canadians direct access to our content without having to go through third-party companies.

Why do I have to pay extra to get access to CBC News Network? Don't my taxes pay for this channel?

CBC News Network was created on a paid broadcast model it is supported financially through cable and satellite subscription fees and advertisements, and does not receive public funding.

There is consequently a streaming subscription fee on Gem which mirrors the broadcast subscription fee.

If you already have CBC News Network as part of a cable or satellite package, you can use your providers' digital sites and/or apps to access the channel at no additional cost through their on demand digital services. You will need to input your cable/satellite subscription number to do this.

Once your account is permanently deleted, other users will be prevented from seeing any posts or comments you may have made on cbc.ca, though it may be possible that some of your posts and related information will remain available through online searches for a certain period of time through cache function, internet archives, etc. We unfortunately have no control over this. Also, once your account is permanently deleted there will be no way to recover it, and so you will be required to create a new one if you change your mind.

We thank you for being a CBC member and we hope you will continue to enjoy the wide variety of content still available without a CBC user account.

  • To avoid buffering / streaming issues, please ensure you have a minimum of 5 Mbps of bandwidth. You can check your system at fast.com.

You can also help create a smoother stream by taking the following steps:

    1. Close any programs on your device that are running in the background while you stream CBC video;

    2. Create a larger buffer by pausing the program for a few seconds;

    3. Try disabling hardware acceleration.

If, after you have gone through the steps above and have confirmed you have adequate bandwidth, you continue to experience buffering issues while watching a show, please contact us.

  • Closed Captions

Many full programs are closed captioned. When the show starts playing (after any advertisements) look for the CC button inthe player controls to activate the captions.

Some types of content are not yet available with closed captioning, including most short form content, such as web-first, time sensitive news clips. Also, clips taken from full programs lose their captions in the editing process. For example, The National as a full program has captioning, but individual stories taken from the broadcast do not.

We understand that closed captioning is important to many Canadians and CBC is working hard toward the eventual provision of captions on all new content online.

    Described Video

We provide Described Video on some of thecontent found at watch.cbc.ca and in our CBC TV app for iOS and Android. Look for the DV button in the player controls to activate Described Video.

  • Are new episodes available at the same time as the television broadcast?

Yes, you can choose to stream CBC TV live on your favourite device or watch on demand. New episodes are available on demand the same day as they air on TV.

Can I watch episodes before they air on TV?

Some full episodes or full seasons will be available to stream before they air on CBC Television. Some series are exclusively available on the CBC TV app and cbc.ca/watch like Top of the Lake Season 1 and Great British Baking Show Season 6.

What is the Play/Sign In symbol that appears on the top of some episodes and the local CBC TV live streams?

When you see an item with the play/sign in symbol, it means that only CBC members can access this content. It’s free to sign up!

Why isn’t a show available anymore?

Some programs and movies are only available for a limited time due to licensing agreements. An example of this is Coronation Street, where the latest episodes are only available for 30 days. Stay up-to-date with series leaving the service by signing up for the CBC TV newsletter. Sign up for the newsletter here

Why can’t I find the show that I’m looking for?

  • Knowing and understanding who you are is critical. Data shapes both the programming we create and the products we build; it always has. Online, we have an opportunity to use your data to become a better public broadcaster. This information also helps us understand whether the programs we create appeal to all Canadians.

Here is the information we collect when you sign in to CBC and why we collect it.

    Field

    Mandatory/Optional

Why are you asking for this?

    Full Name

    Mandatory

We need your name because we require our community members to use their real names in our comment sections. Your name only appears to others if you choose to comment on our stories.

    Email Address

    Mandatory

We need your email address to allow you to sign-in to your account on all your devices, reach out on technical questions, email you information, and help you recover your password.

    Password

    Mandatory

We need you to choose a password to keep your account secure. We won't share your password with others and neither should you.

    Consent Checkbox

    Mandatory

In line with Canadian laws, this checkbox is for you to consent to with the collection of your data. But it's more important to us that you actually understand how we're using your data and why. To learn more, read our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.

    Date of Birth

    Mandatory for some services

While date of birth is not mandatory for services such as CBC newsletters or commenting on articles, we do require this information for our video streaming service ( gem.cbc.ca and the CBC Gem app).

Viewers must be 13-years of age or older to sign-up for a subscription service, and date of birth helps us to monitor or "age-gate" our subscription services.

We can also use this date of birth information to review our programming to make sure we are properly serving all Canadians, and to offer our users a more personalised CBC experience.

    Postal Code

    Mandatory

We need your postal code to show you more local content and more relevant ads. Knowing what area of the country you live in helps us understand whether we are creating programs that interest Canadians across the country.

    Gender

    Optional

You can choose to share your gender to help us make sure we are creating programming that appeals to all Canadians and show you ads that might interest you more.

  • We’re running a new experiment that makes recommendations tailored to your interests. We hope that these suggestions will make for a better browsing experience, helping you discover more content that interests you.

The project is currently being run on our search page as we continue to refine and improve our recommendation system.

    How are the recommendations made?

We make our recommendations by looking at things you’ve looked at recently on CBC.ca coupled with what we think your goals might be at that time of day. For example, it’s possible that if you came to CBC.ca in the morning to check the weather, it’s probable that you’d also be interested in other types of information like a traffic report or the score from last night’s hockey game before you head out the door.

But I want to expand my point of view are you going to just show me things that already reinforce my beliefs?

No - definitely not, we’re not trying to narrow perspectives. We’ll still be showcasing a wide selection of features, articles, opinions, analysis and more. Our goal is to provide you with the most relevant recommendations that match what you’re trying to do on the site at that moment in time.

Should I be worried about my privacy? Are you sharing this information with anyone else?

We store our data for a 24-hour period and we don’t share personally identifiable information about the pages you’ve viewed. You can read more about how we use data at the CBC in our Privacy Policy.

How frequently will you refresh my recommendations?

Personal recommendations are updated with every page you visit.

    Why are you doing this?

It’s our hope that this recommendation system will help you find what you’re seeking with ease and efficiency. We want to help you find or discover the things that interest you in a way that’s smart and helpful.

This update issue generally occurs when you are logged out of the Apple TV (tvOS) app store.

The best course of action here would be deleting the existing app and then reinstalling it on your Apple TV.

This should force you to log back into the tvOS store where you can then proceed with the update.

    To delete the app:

Select it with your Apple remote, then click and hold on your remote until the app icon starts to wobble.

Now click on the play button and select delete.

Once the app is deleted, launch the App store, search for CBC Gem and then reinstall the app

  • Did you know that during a federal election, the Canada Elections Act obliges CBC to provide broadcast time to officially registered federal political Parties, even on our Radio networks? And that we must make time available for two types of political broadcasts Free Time and Paid Time? This is considered a part of the democratic process.

While we are obligated to offer time, not all Parties will exercise their right to buy time. As a result, listeners may hear advertising on behalf of only one Party, although the time is equally available to all Parties. It’s also important to note that these ads are supplied to broadcasters by the Parties and/or their ad agencies - CBC does not create them. All ads must be approved by the individual Party’s chief agent, and as long as an ad meets all advertising rules, it can air on CBC platforms.

We know these ads can be a surprise to our audience, particularly our CBC Radio listeners who are not used to hearing advertisements on radio programs. So here’s a primer for what you can expect to see and hear on CBC platforms:

    1. All registered Parties are offered specified amounts of free broadcast time to present their platform to Canadians. The amount of broadcasting time is determined by the Broadcasting Arbitrator in the Broadcasting Guidelines under the regulations in the federal Elections Act.

    2. Paid time is political advertising. All registered Parties are permitted to purchase a specified amount of broadcast time for their advertising, but again, the amount is determined by the Broadcast Arbitrator at Elections Canada.

    3. Under the Guidelines, the Parties can buy time to broadcast their advertising during certain times of the day. It is up to each of the Parties to decide if they want to purchase advertising on CBC Radio, TV or CBC.ca, how frequently to run ads, at what time of the day, and in what parts of the country. CBC, in turn, can restrict advertising from certain types of programming areas, such as news. As a result, ads may be heard on, or seen during one program, but not another and only in particular regions.

    4. To ensure there is no confusion between CBC’s regular political coverage and these paid political advertisements, we identify ads to Radio listeners in advance.

  • This is a commitment we take very seriously, and we work had to achieve balance in our coverage in a number of ways.

CBC News adheres to both government regulation and publicly available Journalistic Standards and Practices to cover all Parties, issues and candidates in a fair and equitable fashion during an election, and both our news and current affairs programs pay meticulous attention to overall political balance.

But it is important to note that “fair” does not necessarily mean “equal”. Our commitment to balancing political points of view is not, and in many cases, cannot be measured by a traditional equivalency. Not all politicians hold rallies on the same day, not all Parties engage with issues in the same way, at the same time.

Balance here is achieved over a series of programs and over a period of time. Balance does not mean that one particular Party's voice must be immediately juxtaposed with an equally strong view from another Party. To have fair coverage, all news organizations must ensure that differing relevant points of view are treated in an equitable fashion.

  • You can find information about radio frequencies, TVchannels, and reception by using the CBC Channels and Frequencies guide.

In order to use the guide to find information about your area, simply enter the name of your town, city, or region into the search field above the map and select the best option from the drop-down menu which appears.

The red pin indicates the centre of the map. You can move the pin around to better indicate your location by clicking on it. Once you drop the pin, tower icons which appear in red are those within range of the pin’s location on the map. Tower icons in black are out of range. The frequencies listed to the left of the map represent those which can be accessed from the pin’s current location. Click on a frequency to see its source and its transmission range projected in red onto the map.

If you do not see a listing for a specific CBC/Radio-Canada service, this indicates that there is no over-the-air signal in that area. You may wish to listen online at cbc.ca/listen or watch online at cbc.ca/watch if this is the case.
